I use the C7R exclusively and do almost all of my online races in the GT hopper. I get podiums consistently with it (S-4980 rating), and when I don't, most of the time its because I got crashed out by someone else, or less so I make my own mistake and go off track. It's rare for me not to get a podium purely due to race pace with the C7R. I also do the Hard to Soft strategy with most races. Most people do Medium to Medium, and I prefer running out of sequence to everyone else, it give me more time in clean air.
You are just a really good driver. I agree with the video mans assertion that the c7 handles and brakes very well but is lacking speed wise, and belongs in decent. I would put it higher though
I mained the 488 for a while, and it was hilarious how ridiculously fast it was on the straights, but you have to play minister of defense in the comers. And hard tires are basically a necessity or it dies at the end of a race.
I love the vid man, great stuff! Would you ever consider doing a track list? Maybe going into detail on what kind of track it is and what cars work best on it? I feel like you’d be the guy to hit the nail on the head considering how detailed you were with this video

In the game I usally use the C8.R both online and offline and its a pretty awesome car imo and its the only other car I use a lot beside the Cadillac LMDh's. Even though there are times online when either i mess up in game or someone rams me off the track, the C8.R surprisingly even as you say "lacks a bit of acceleration" still manages to catch up to the rest of the pack and even though I may not finish top 5 most of the time the C8.R still manages to be a consistent contender and a pretty good GT for the masses and even though there are other good choices I'ma still drive the C8.R but i welcome more real life GT cars to come into Forza so we can get more variety in the grid. I have maxed leveled 8 GT cars and mainly just been using the RSR as it’s just fun to drive. Then on Monday I thought I would give the NSX a try and wow after some tuning this car is a beast but can be twitchy coming out of cornerszx I would love to do a tuning video for the NSX RSR and the M8. I flat out refuse to use the Audi it’s not rewarding for me but I agree with the list and surprised where the NSX is not many people use it that’s why I picked it 😂
Awesome video, thank you very much for sharing. Though I have been using Forza for years, only recently did I start running MP, and, the Division I am focusing in is the GT. Thus, this comes in very handy.
I like that you pointed out that the top people don't use the R8 because it's OP. In our party chat, anyone that uses it we don't consider their lap times or if they won nobody cares, you should win...
Great list! I started my GT adventure with the Ferrari but I just cant control it. Have tried to tune it with the help of YT tuning videos and while that have helped a lot it is still just an assassin during corners - I just cant control the backend 😅. I have used the KTM the last couple of days and its a blast, even with the standard tune. You will pass a ton of cars if you nail the start and it is so fast out of corners.
Soften your rear arbs Increase deceleration percentage in the differential Decrease acceleration percentage in the differential Increase anti dive a bit That should help with your issues with the back end
I’m sure this tier list will change with balancing changes. But for the most part I agree. I would move the Ferrari up a bit. I’ve seen the Ferrari beat Audis on pure speed on high speed tracks like Le Mans, Hakone and Yas Marina. That being said though mega accurate tier list 🙌🏻
Great vid❤. I think all the cars should be able to be tuned to same spec as the R8. The R8 feels great the others feel like they have been de tuned hard to the point they feel terrible.
The GT3 Porsche 2017 it's a rotation monster, I'm talking rotation levels of out turning other cars while they are hard breaking and you are engine breaking, it lauches fast with TC on Sport and breaks great too, only downside it's it's average top end, on shorter and more nimble tracks is an absolute monster, on S-4850 I regularly qualify on the top 5 and I always end up finishing in either top 5 or top 10, with common podiums, biggest downside? The weight is all on the rear so you gotta watch those rear tires, but believe me, open diff, max stiff anti roll bars and some other tweaks and this thing rips
Pretty great list although I would disagree about the 2018 Porsche. My friends were definitely not having a fun time racing me on hakone club as I could easily blow past them from 2 seconds behind with slipstream. It’s also sad that the Audi is the only one in the op category. That car is broken
I use the Ferrari with Raceboy77 tune and I have won several races with it. Its amazing at the right tracks. Like Spa. Nobody expects the Ferrari. Ive slain so many Audis. My driver rating is S-4963 at the moment.
Maxed out the M8, R8 and the Ferrari, the Acura somewhere level 40 and for me the Ferrari is by far the best for my driving style. Ist crazy how fast it is and even on corners ist much enjoyable to drive compared to a R8 imo playing with wheel and pad
Thank god i went with the porsche 911 RSR from the get go. Its so fast and so easy to control! I wish i had the premium version or the DLC to try out the Audi.
I have been using almost exclusively the Bentley since the game came out. I knew it wasn't as strong as the Audi, Vette, 911, I didnt know people would put it this low on a tier list 😂 Maybe I need to try some different cars. One thing I will say for the Bentley, it rides the kerbs like a champ, especially in the wet. I have followed other cars round in heavy rain and they start twitching if they even think about going near a kerb while I can use every kerb with no issue at all.
Honestly like Luke says it works best for him! Everyone has they’re own preference. I love the Bentley and Porsche 2017 but if I come across quick drivers in meta cars it’s no first place for me lol enjoy what feels good to you. You’ll always drive quicker in something you personally feel comfortable in.
@jayjonesss I do like the way it drives. And I only feel like it really struggles at Suzuka, every other track I'm competitive enough, its always fun beating Audis in it as well haha But I am always a second or so a lap down on the Audis/Vettes/911s at the front. If they get in front of me in the race, I just have to watch them disappear into the distance and hope they make a mistake. I'm going to have to give the Viper and the BMWs a go and see if I can close that gap a bit.
@@thenightman9189 can’t agree more. It is a boatly after all so all the tracks with tight sweeping corners it struggles but long sweeping corners with a nice setup is fun. Yeah you’ll get beaten by faster drivers in meta cars but I always am finishing 2nd - 7th always starting at the back because I like driving through chaos 😂😂😂 happy racing brother 💪🏾
I’ve got no idea why the V8 Supercars are listed as GT cars in the new game. With Xbox and Forza signage present at this year’s Bathurst 1000, I’ve got a strong feeling we’ll get the Camaro and Mustang V8 Supercars too. I don’t think Turn 10 has ever moved cars from one division to another, but they really should if this happens.

@@CHEF2077 Oh that's bizarre because they're IN class. I wasn't shocked I hadn't seen the TT, it being weirdly FF, but the GT2 races IRL, what a weird choice, I don't mind the chally and V8 Supers being included so why stop there.
The hilarious bit is that in reality, the Bentley would be in the strong or OP categories, it has the most power and weight of all GT cars but by only a bit and handled really well, it also had the Highest top speed of all GT cars.
I personally use the c7r corvette for all my gt racing and i completely agree with this tierlist the corvette is not good but its not bad either its just easy to drive and i think it looks and sounds fabulous
The only experience I've had with the Ferrari is backmarkers picking it then getting in the way on the last few laps while you're trying to close the gap after your pit and Rari is out here blocking after deciding to stay out another lap on tires that were worn 2 laps ago.
I would say that almost each car has his own golden track, but I would still like to see more GT3 cars and most important of all, free GT3 cars, not thru car pass
BMW m8 is one of the best cars I’ve ever driven in any game. Weirdly tho it needs to have its suspension geometry at -0.4 front and -0.8 rear to even make it possible to keep up with the Audi
I randomly picked the Aston and stuck with it. It’s pretty competitive if you run in on a minimum downforce setup. It regains a bit of top end and still corners great.
I dont think anyone can debate about this he's given correct states about all the cars ive been a vette fan boy since the game came out and ive noticed how weak the c8 and c7.R is they are quick but require a little change up in the way you play
The McLaren 720s GT3 that just released feels OP. Been driving it around the Glen in an hour long test session and it has some of the best turn in corner ability and entry to exit speed I've seen in a GT. Handles amazing. Great power delivery too. Even on stock tuning and set-up it feels very well balanced. Might give the Audi a run for its money if tuned right. I've been a loyal Porsche GT driver since Motorsport 4 and can safely say that this Mclaren might make me move away from my beloved 911 RSR & GT3R.
Unfortunately it's not that good. It feels good to drive, but the cornering speed is actually pretty poor. It's decent on the straights, but it's pretty average elsewhere. It's a solid second slower than the Audi on most tracks
@@Harmonic14 I've had some decent success in it so far. No wins yet but pretty consistently in the top 5 to podium positions. After more driving and paying more attention to the cars quirks, it suffers from feeling a little slow/sluggish in general. The handling I still love, but wish it could convert that into a quicker corner out and acceleration. Feels a little delayed on exits which is odd considering off the line its pretty quick (at least against the people I'm matched up against.) Still enjoy it a lot.
Great list man, and reguarding the 2015 rsr, still cant wrap my head around my they added that? Maybe because there are a lot of 2014 spec gte cars but still weird, im interested to see how the 720s gt3, amg gt3 and the super tropheo huracan does
With a good tune I see the Ferrari much higher in the decent tier. I can usually do a medium-medium tire race without having the tires shredded at any point.
Any race that's viable for the Ferrari to run medium-medium can be run on medium-soft or even a no-stop on hards by most other cars. It's fast in qualifying, but it loses its edge in a race

I would love an update on this list, currently i am maining the lambo, and im pretty good with it but the tire wear drives me mad, so im thinking of switching. If the update comes, it would help me a lot 😁
Overall a pretty good list i think, although i do think you're sleeping on the Ford GT. That car is difficult at low speed but it has pretty insane top end and handling, I don't think its too far off the C8 pace wise and it does pretty well on tyres
Ferrari at Le Mans is just straight up cheating lmao. I did some experimenting and found that out. Decrease the aero, make the gears longer, and boom, your'e going 320 km/h or more on the mulsanne straight while everybody is going 2XX. The last sector is the bain of my existance because the car is already slow in corners and hard to drive, and when tuned to the extreme like i did, you end up losing way too much. Its pretty much guaranteed to get overtaken if you have someone 2 seconds behind. Tire wear also kills your last lap. One time i was P2 with a 20 second lead over P3 and finished P6 because i spun like 4 corners in a row. Despite all of that, i think its worth it. Its so funny overtaking everyone and imagining their reaction. Everytime i pass someone i imagine them saying "BRO, THID GUY IS HACKING".
I avoid the Ferrari 488 Challenge because it creates too much oversteer for me to reliably use on a wheel. I know i can tune it out but at that point, I'm basically reducing its potential laptime
The forza gt class really aggravates me. I wish they just kept it to gt3/gtlm and didn’t have so many outliers. Especially when it seems like it’s just to stretch out content. Since there isn’t any forza gt career mode I hope it’s just a temporary thing.
Well this is what happens when Turn 10 don’t hire good drivers to test and tune their cars. I have to homologate the cars myself. Esports ready built from the ground up.
The thing I hate about the featured Online GT Division is that some car are at PI 833-834 (like the audi and some others that are really good) and others are at 822, and among those at 822 is the C7.R, it can get that 833-834 PI, yet they didn't and it is frustrating. How come the majority are at 833-834 and are quite strong where most that are at 822 and stuck where they can get the 833-834. Actually using the C7.R and it needs that extra PI to be very competitive with the others, the lack of power actually kills it and I find it sad, it is a superb car in general.
You put the 2015 RSR on avoid but for some reason i can put down some REALLY good times on Nurburgring GP, last race i was 1st with 7 seconds to spare.
Good lap times are relative, as is winning races. It doesn't mean much to win races if your lobby isn't full of strong drivers. For the top drivers, the 2015 Porsche is at least a second slower than the good cars on most tracks, and it's harder to drive

for me the C8 is the fastest one i can drive ( lap times in most tracks ) i like how the c7 and the aston drive but lack in top speed , ferrari has that but lacks in the corners ... if i could tune i would use the audi but every tune i tried the car just isnt stable enough .. and the m8 is kinda good , again for me with the tunes i have on the cars , the m8 is 1 sec slower than the C8 so C8 it is until i learn how to tune
Nice vid, but anyway, that's not right. I mean, i want to enjoy and ride as many cars as possible. When i lvl a car to max, i change it to another. And i really feel the difference. For me it's not right, that one car is more effective than other. They can be a little, but not for a few seconds per lap.
In the 4900+ rankings, I don't remember KTMs in the top three and I very rarely see BMWs. I rarely see Fords. I would up the aston and ford. And put ferrari lower. Never seen them on the podium once (but leman).
Ranking is irrelevant right now - I'm 4999 and take pole by 3-5 seconds in every race I do. Just because you never see cars doesn't mean they aren't competitive. The KTM requires a setup to be fast, but it's insanely good when you get it right. The Ford and BMWs have also been known good cars for a long time.
@@Harmonic14 Thanks for the feedback! I play a lot worse and all I can do is podiums in 20-30% of races and top 50 in Rivals (without spending hours on it). But then isn't that a ranking for top players? Because agree, my comments are quite correct for the general situation in the common podiums in your ranking. And if it's not too much trouble, could you please publish tunes for these cars, so that I could understand my wrongness. I have about the same time on my tunes and raceboy's tunes. But I couldn't find any competitive Ferrari tunes, and I couldn't tune my own. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. Anyway thanks a lot for the review, it was interesting. :)
The Porsches ALL need work. A quick glance at the suspension settings on the 2018 and 2015 will tell you all you need to know. The 2018 having "not quite the grip" comes down to three factors: 1) Toe- it is toed in on both ends as delivered. set this to zero front and rear 2) anti-dive/ squat- they have this one set out in left field, too. set the anti-dive to no more than 25, and set the anti-squat to -23 to -25 to start, and not only will the car steer entering corners on the brakes, you can use the throttle to steer it on the way out now, too. 3) roll center. set both ends to +3.5 subtract to taste (if you want more steering response, set the front lower, if you want less oversteer, set the rear lower) 2015 needs most of the above, but tire pressures and camber are out of whack, leading it to EAT tires without adjustment. -1.9 front -1.2 rear camber will usually get it done. There is nothing inherently wrong with the porshes, it's just that it's like Turn10 only bothered to set one of them up correctly. I have won races with all three, and lap times between them is less than .2 at Watkin's Glenn (short).
All of these cars have been evaluated with setups on them... Looking at cars with stock setups is pointless. My commentary applies even with optimized setups. There's nothing wrong with the 2017 Porsche at all, but the 2018 is mediocre, and the 2015 is seriously lacking. That's just how the cars stack up right now regardless of setup. Winning races and anecdotal evidence are meaningless... I can win most of my races in an S class car - that's just how bad most online lobbies are. The 2017 is a fast car, and the 2015 is not. If you're within 2 tenths of the 2017 in the 2015, your 2017 setup needs a lot of work.
I wish they had a V8 supercar spec division. The real life competition only has two cars anyway, we don't technically need a bunch of cars.

Ferrari I think it’s one of the hardest and most oversteering car competing with BMW in Forzas don’t know why

Olso audi is terrible if not find the optimal settings.

@jayjonesss I do like the way it drives. And I only feel like it really struggles at Suzuka, every other track I'm competitive enough, its always fun beating Audis in it as well haha
But I am always a second or so a lap down on the Audis/Vettes/911s at the front. If they get in front of me in the race, I just have to watch them disappear into the distance and hope they make a mistake. I'm going to have to give the Viper and the BMWs a go and see if I can close that gap a bit.
@@thenightman9189 can’t agree more. It is a boatly after all so all the tracks with tight sweeping corners it struggles but long sweeping corners with a nice setup is fun. Yeah you’ll get beaten by faster drivers in meta cars but I always am finishing 2nd - 7th always starting at the back because I like driving through chaos 😂😂😂 happy racing brother 💪🏾

I’ve got no idea why the V8 Supercars are listed as GT cars in the new game. With Xbox and Forza signage present at this year’s Bathurst 1000, I’ve got a strong feeling we’ll get the Camaro and Mustang V8 Supercars too.
I don’t think Turn 10 has ever moved cars from one division to another, but they really should if this happens.

@@CHEF2077 Oh that's bizarre because they're IN class. I wasn't shocked I hadn't seen the TT, it being weirdly FF, but the GT2 races IRL, what a weird choice, I don't mind the chally and V8 Supers being included so why stop there.
The hilarious bit is that in reality, the Bentley would be in the strong or OP categories, it has the most power and weight of all GT cars but by only a bit and handled really well, it also had the Highest top speed of all GT cars.
I'm just glad the Aston i picked isn't complete dogshit. I love driving that car.
I personally use the c7r corvette for all my gt racing and i completely agree with this tierlist the corvette is not good but its not bad either its just easy to drive and i think it looks and sounds fabulous
The only experience I've had with the Ferrari is backmarkers picking it then getting in the way on the last few laps while you're trying to close the gap after your pit and Rari is out here blocking after deciding to stay out another lap on tires that were worn 2 laps ago.

I would say that almost each car has his own golden track, but I would still like to see more GT3 cars and most important of all, free GT3 cars, not thru car pass
BMW m8 is one of the best cars I’ve ever driven in any game. Weirdly tho it needs to have its suspension geometry at -0.4 front and -0.8 rear to even make it possible to keep up with the Audi
I randomly picked the Aston and stuck with it. It’s pretty competitive if you run in on a minimum downforce setup. It regains a bit of top end and still corners great.
I dont think anyone can debate about this he's given correct states about all the cars ive been a vette fan boy since the game came out and ive noticed how weak the c8 and c7.R is they are quick but require a little change up in the way you play

The McLaren 720s GT3 that just released feels OP. Been driving it around the Glen in an hour long test session and it has some of the best turn in corner ability and entry to exit speed I've seen in a GT. Handles amazing. Great power delivery too. Even on stock tuning and set-up it feels very well balanced. Might give the Audi a run for its money if tuned right. I've been a loyal Porsche GT driver since Motorsport 4 and can safely say that this Mclaren might make me move away from my beloved 911 RSR & GT3R.
Unfortunately it's not that good. It feels good to drive, but the cornering speed is actually pretty poor. It's decent on the straights, but it's pretty average elsewhere. It's a solid second slower than the Audi on most tracks
@@Harmonic14 I've had some decent success in it so far. No wins yet but pretty consistently in the top 5 to podium positions. After more driving and paying more attention to the cars quirks, it suffers from feeling a little slow/sluggish in general. The handling I still love, but wish it could convert that into a quicker corner out and acceleration. Feels a little delayed on exits which is odd considering off the line its pretty quick (at least against the people I'm matched up against.) Still enjoy it a lot.
Theres 2 different 488 variants, and for some reason they have about a 100bhp difference bewteen them, no idea why

I use a ballasted Aston Martin in the S class open series, it's surprising how good it is. It's also quite nimble in Forza GT.
Disappointed there are no McLaren's in the series

C7 was my favorite in 7 on road Atlanta, kinda hard now knowing which is gonna be good, expect for the R8😂

I have heavily tuned it.
With a good tune I see the Ferrari much higher in the decent tier. I can usually do a medium-medium tire race without having the tires shredded at any point.
Any race that's viable for the Ferrari to run medium-medium can be run on medium-soft or even a no-stop on hards by most other cars. It's fast in qualifying, but it loses its edge in a race

I excluded the KTM GT2 and Audi TT because they can't be used in the Forza GT playlist online

Overall a pretty good list i think, although i do think you're sleeping on the Ford GT. That car is difficult at low speed but it has pretty insane top end and handling, I don't think its too far off the C8 pace wise and it does pretty well on tyres
The Ford is quite good, perhaps even borderline strong at some tracks. It's just a bit behind the RSR and C8, so I had to make the cutoff somewhere
Ferrari at Le Mans is just straight up cheating lmao. I did some experimenting and found that out. Decrease the aero, make the gears longer, and boom, your'e going 320 km/h or more on the mulsanne straight while everybody is going 2XX. The last sector is the bain of my existance because the car is already slow in corners and hard to drive, and when tuned to the extreme like i did, you end up losing way too much. Its pretty much guaranteed to get overtaken if you have someone 2 seconds behind. Tire wear also kills your last lap. One time i was P2 with a 20 second lead over P3 and finished P6 because i spun like 4 corners in a row. Despite all of that, i think its worth it. Its so funny overtaking everyone and imagining their reaction. Everytime i pass someone i imagine them saying "BRO, THID GUY IS HACKING".
I avoid the Ferrari 488 Challenge because it creates too much oversteer for me to reliably use on a wheel. I know i can tune it out but at that point, I'm basically reducing its potential laptime
The forza gt class really aggravates me. I wish they just kept it to gt3/gtlm and didn’t have so many outliers. Especially when it seems like it’s just to stretch out content. Since there isn’t any forza gt career mode I hope it’s just a temporary thing.

The thing I hate about the featured Online GT Division is that some car are at PI 833-834 (like the audi and some others that are really good) and others are at 822, and among those at 822 is the C7.R, it can get that 833-834 PI, yet they didn't and it is frustrating. How come the majority are at 833-834 and are quite strong where most that are at 822 and stuck where they can get the 833-834. Actually using the C7.R and it needs that extra PI to be very competitive with the others, the lack of power actually kills it and I find it sad, it is a superb car in general.
Yea it doesn't make sense. A lot of cars could be made more competitive with simple adjustments, which I hope they do in the future
Ive been using the R8 since the game launched. Had no idea people considered it OP. I have yet to win with it, highest finish being P3.

You put the 2015 RSR on avoid but for some reason i can put down some REALLY good times on Nurburgring GP, last race i was 1st with 7 seconds to spare.
Good lap times are relative, as is winning races. It doesn't mean much to win races if your lobby isn't full of strong drivers. For the top drivers, the 2015 Porsche is at least a second slower than the good cars on most tracks, and it's harder to drive

for me the C8 is the fastest one i can drive ( lap times in most tracks ) i like how the c7 and the aston drive but lack in top speed , ferrari has that but lacks in the corners ... if i could tune i would use the audi but every tune i tried the car just isnt stable enough .. and the m8 is kinda good , again for me with the tunes i have on the cars , the m8 is 1 sec slower than the C8 so C8 it is until i learn how to tune
Ive had great results with the Challenger, love the cornering grip. even better with raceboy77 tune. I will try the M8 next

I use the 2017 Porsche RSR in a Rexy livery, I tried the Audi but I use a steering wheel and it absolutely hates curbs and spins out

Nice vid, but anyway, that's not right. I mean, i want to enjoy and ride as many cars as possible. When i lvl a car to max, i change it to another. And i really feel the difference. For me it's not right, that one car is more effective than other. They can be a little, but not for a few seconds per lap.

In the 4900+ rankings, I don't remember KTMs in the top three and I very rarely see BMWs. I rarely see Fords. I would up the aston and ford. And put ferrari lower. Never seen them on the podium once (but leman).
Ranking is irrelevant right now - I'm 4999 and take pole by 3-5 seconds in every race I do.
Just because you never see cars doesn't mean they aren't competitive. The KTM requires a setup to be fast, but it's insanely good when you get it right. The Ford and BMWs have also been known good cars for a long time.
@@Harmonic14 Thanks for the feedback! I play a lot worse and all I can do is podiums in 20-30% of races and top 50 in Rivals (without spending hours on it). But then isn't that a ranking for top players? Because agree, my comments are quite correct for the general situation in the common podiums in your ranking. And if it's not too much trouble, could you please publish tunes for these cars, so that I could understand my wrongness. I have about the same time on my tunes and raceboy's tunes. But I couldn't find any competitive Ferrari tunes, and I couldn't tune my own. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. Anyway thanks a lot for the review, it was interesting. :)

You definitely, definitely need to spend more time in the Ford GT if you don't have that in strong.
It's a good car - just not quite at the level of the RSR, C8, etc.
The Porsches ALL need work. A quick glance at the suspension settings on the 2018 and 2015 will tell you all you need to know. The 2018 having "not quite the grip" comes down to three factors:
1) Toe- it is toed in on both ends as delivered. set this to zero front and rear
2) anti-dive/ squat- they have this one set out in left field, too. set the anti-dive to no more than 25, and set the anti-squat to -23 to -25 to start, and not only will the car steer entering corners on the brakes, you can use the throttle to steer it on the way out now, too.
3) roll center. set both ends to +3.5 subtract to taste (if you want more steering response, set the front lower, if you want less oversteer, set the rear lower)
2015 needs most of the above, but tire pressures and camber are out of whack, leading it to EAT tires without adjustment. -1.9 front -1.2 rear camber will usually get it done.
There is nothing inherently wrong with the porshes, it's just that it's like Turn10 only bothered to set one of them up correctly. I have won races with all three, and lap times between them is less than .2 at Watkin's Glenn (short).
All of these cars have been evaluated with setups on them... Looking at cars with stock setups is pointless. My commentary applies even with optimized setups.
There's nothing wrong with the 2017 Porsche at all, but the 2018 is mediocre, and the 2015 is seriously lacking. That's just how the cars stack up right now regardless of setup.
Winning races and anecdotal evidence are meaningless... I can win most of my races in an S class car - that's just how bad most online lobbies are.
The 2017 is a fast car, and the 2015 is not. If you're within 2 tenths of the 2017 in the 2015, your 2017 setup needs a lot of work.
