RIP Rocky Johnson. The word steal/stole has a negative connotation. As Rocky Johnson's son, The Rock did not steal anything. A son following in his fathers footstep's and doing some things the way his father did them is considering paying homage and tribute to your father. You wouldn't say his tribal tattoos are stealing the High Chief Peter Miavia's gimmick. The Rock is his grandson and he's honoring his heritage.
When Randy Orton does a superplex, did he steal that from his father since that was his Dad's finishing move? Does Charlotte Flair steal from Ric Flair with her ring entrance attire, theme music, her "Wooo!!!", and parts of her move set? Did Cody steal his brother's gimmick when he was StarDust? Most people in the know would say no. These things are consider tribute based.
Now a stolen gimmick would be Hulk Hogan and Jesse Ventura both readily admit they "stole" from Superstar Billy Graham. Dusty Rhodes took a lot of his gimmick from Thunderbolt Patterson. Nature Boy Ric Flair copied right down to his name Nature Boy Buddy Rogers. I'm not saying these guys are carbon copies of their predecessors but they definitely took enough to the point it's identifiable, some more than others. When someone who isn't kin to your or otherwise associated or related to you in the business take over your gimmick that could be considered stealing someone's gimmick. Especially if it's done without the originator's knowledge or blessing.

    • @gqloc5987

Maybe this interview is a bad example of what you mean.
I don't see any copying going on here. This is the most laid-back interview I have seen from a wrestler. Plain talking, straight to the point and no gimmicks.

Wow, that’s absolutely nothing like a prime Rock promo. DJ is one of the greatest to ever talk on a live microphone in all of sports and entertainment. Rocky Johnson is great in the ring and he looks like a million bucks, but that promo was pretty Lance Storm-ish.

In that case, let’s just say that Dwayne also stole Rocky’s last name, skin color, physical attributes, chromosomes, height, and eye color.

Seriously, "steal" implies that he took something without asking. This is his father, whom Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson idolized and grew up watching, was of course going to be someone he emulated...to a degree.

dude really? from a business standpoint is the only way I can give you credit for this video. This is classic click bait of course, but you took it there with the angle. So you figure most people don't know who the rock's father is. from there you insert the right thumbnail, and use a negative title. knowing controversy gets clicks. it's a smart way to get views, but your shitting on a father & son. that's their family and it's none of your business. furthermore, In the league of business, there is good money & bad money. only one of' em can come back to haunt you. Get on your square square king. - DJ Facts, Rotten Apple Radio

Look at the people taking the title literally. He's paying homage to his dad with that title, not literally saying he's a thief because his dad's gimmick inspired Rock. Of course it's acceptable to take things from your father. There are wrestlers who take their parent's name (Guerreros, Axel, Flairs, Ortons, Rhodes, Harts, etc.) and moves all the time. Calm down, people.
