Our neighbors have been collecting “rent” from sludge being spread on the fields that has surrounded us on three of four sides for at least 20 years now. We protested this being forced upon us while our neighbors claimed they were “doing the city a favor” while also being paid per acre spread upon. Greed doesn’t only belong to big corporations.
Non-stick cookware doesn't own anything to be taken away. If they were concerned about our health they would ban it, but big business (Dupont, 3M) would lose billions of dollars, can't have that. Too much bribery, I mean lobbyist money to make a change.
The government should support the farmers while paying for and helping the farmers get the soil back to where it was before the sludge. That said, and without modifying it, I clearly remember when the sludge started being touted as a good idea, and heavily promoted. To me, it seemed like a Trojan horse for toxins. I would never have gone for that.
So they put the sludge on the farmland that contained the chemicals that are now causing them to be shut down. We need a lawsuit now against the state.
The people knew it was toxic. I was a new resident in a Maine town in 2000. I called The selectman ( who turned out to be one of those farmer's useing the sludge), to find out what the big flap was about. I was told since I was new, I should keep my nose out of it.
It seems to me that if there are micro toxins on people's land because of the sludge that they were given to put on it, then the government should pay them $2,600 an acre to leave it fallow for a few years. They shouldn't have to sell it to the state for that amount.

A few years ago some guys from County Ag came by saying that if we had any citrus trees in our backyard that they needed to spray for some invasive bug. I asked them if I had a choice and they said yes. So I told them not to spray and they didn’t. New to the channel, I'm a small farm owner operator in North California. Was just told by local health department that I can't sell my products at the local farmers market until I get a 400 dollar certificate of inspection pricing that I don't use municipal water to irrigate my fruit trees. I live 20 miles outside of town down a 2 mile dirt road . I don't even have electricity at my place, much less water from the town treatment plant.. Insane
So why don't they shut down the manufacturing of the chemicals? If they can shut down a farm, why not the production plants of the chemicals because it will be way higher.

I am from western Maine. The sludge program had existed since several decades ago. I believe one of the first of the farmers to participate in this program was in Oxford County. I also believe that someone had determined many years ago that there was a problem with the pollution of the soil from the sludge. So why has this not been stopped sooner? Please inform me. Thanks.

PFAs in soil don't break down in 10 years. They have a serum half life of 5ish years, which means they are basically out of your blood in 7 but that has no bearing on how long they stay in the ground. Which is not forever, but we don't know how long it takes for them to break down. But there are processes for removing them from soil and water. And condemning farms because they have low concentrations when food is packaged in plastic and cooked on teflon anyway is ridiculous. Especially since it sounds like the PFAs are there because the State of Maine dumped them there.
As a Mainer, I can confirm that all of this is true. Interestingly I read an article this morning about how Maine has had a loss of farms over the last year even as the value of agricultural land has gone up. No mention of the sludge or paying people off for their farms though, you would think they might want to mention why there has been a loss of farms. SMH. Thank you for covering this!

I'm an organic Maine farmer. Literally EVERY piece of land is over 4 parts per trillion, and MOST are over 20, because it falls out of the atmosphere. Basically these other farmers opted-out of farming voluntarily because they had to apply for the buy-out. IF you are using non-organic fertilizers and pesticides, than you are the problem. Farmstand organic farmers grow clean food, period. Farming, nationwide, needs to de-industrialize, but the corporate players only care about the bottom line. Take Wall Street out of your food, and you'll get a lot better nutrition. I will say: Maine's State Government is just straight crazy. Lots of overeducated fanatics with no practical knowledge or common sense. Most Maine residents are either wealthy liberal seasonal landowners, or live in the Portland Maine metro/suburbia sprawl which is basically north Massachusetts, and they have the legislative majority. They are the ones mandating to the rural folk who are working their land, and they don't have any idea what life is like for a northern Maine farmer.

Our neighbors have been collecting “rent” from sludge being spread on the fields that has surrounded us on three of four sides for at least 20 years now. We protested this being forced upon us while our neighbors claimed they were “doing the city a favor” while also being paid per acre spread upon. Greed doesn’t only belong to big corporations.

The government should support the farmers while paying for and helping the farmers get the soil back to where it was before the sludge. That said, and without modifying it, I clearly remember when the sludge started being touted as a good idea, and heavily promoted. To me, it seemed like a Trojan horse for toxins. I would never have gone for that.
So they put the sludge on the farmland that contained the chemicals that are now causing them to be shut down. We need a lawsuit now against the state.
The people knew it was toxic. I was a new resident in a Maine town in 2000. I called The selectman ( who turned out to be one of those farmer's useing the sludge), to find out what the big flap was about. I was told since I was new, I should keep my nose out of it.

New to the channel, I'm a small farm owner operator in North California. Was just told by local health department that I can't sell my products at the local farmers market until I get a 400 dollar certificate of inspection pricing that I don't use municipal water to irrigate my fruit trees.
I live 20 miles outside of town down a 2 mile dirt road . I don't even have electricity at my place, much less water from the town treatment plant..

I am from western Maine. The sludge program had existed since several decades ago. I believe one of the first of the farmers to participate in this program was in Oxford County. I also believe that someone had determined many years ago that there was a problem with the pollution of the soil from the sludge. So why has this not been stopped sooner? Please inform me. Thanks.

PFAs in soil don't break down in 10 years. They have a serum half life of 5ish years, which means they are basically out of your blood in 7 but that has no bearing on how long they stay in the ground. Which is not forever, but we don't know how long it takes for them to break down.
But there are processes for removing them from soil and water. And condemning farms because they have low concentrations when food is packaged in plastic and cooked on teflon anyway is ridiculous. Especially since it sounds like the PFAs are there because the State of Maine dumped them there.

Interestingly I read an article this morning about how Maine has had a loss of farms over the last year even as the value of agricultural land has gone up. I'm an organic Maine farmer. Literally EVERY piece of land is over 4 parts per trillion, and MOST are over 20, because it falls out of the atmosphere. Basically these other farmers opted-out of farming voluntarily because they had to apply for the buy-out. IF you are using non-organic fertilizers and pesticides, than you are the problem. Farmstand organic farmers grow clean food, period. Farming, nationwide, needs to de-industrialize, but the corporate players only care about the bottom line. Take Wall Street out of your food, and you'll get a lot better nutrition. I will say: Maine's State Government is just straight crazy. Lots of overeducated fanatics with no practical knowledge or common sense. Most Maine residents are either wealthy liberal seasonal landowners, or live in the Portland Maine metro/suburbia sprawl which is basically north Massachusetts, and they have the legislative majority. They are the ones mandating to the rural folk who are working their land, and they don't have any idea what life is like for a northern Maine farmer.
They want that land for their own summer cottages, am I right? Seriously after the state buys out that land, isn’t it public record who they turn around and sell it to?
@@YoniBaruch-y3m IDK for certain how easy it might be to obtain the information about who they have sold it to. Farmland is popular for selling it to these green energy companies for solar array's because the land is already cleared. I suppose it depends on if it is on a particularly scenic hillside or whatnot.
I agree 💯 the rules and laws are made from these winners in southern Maine. They have no clue what happens northern Maine we are a whole different country really.
If you own a farm don't let anyone on your land and definitely don't listen to anything they say have your community take a stand and fight back to protect all farmers because farmers are being shut down all over are county...in case you didn't no

We have used the rain forever to water our lands, farms and personal gardens and never had any problems !! Don’t blame God for the chemicals that mankind spreads around and puts in our foods. Chemicals like Bioengineered Food Ingredients that Bill Gates got permission from our FDA to add to over 75% of our foods right now. START READING ALL THE INGREDIENTS ON FOOD LABELS!! Now our government CHANGED the information on the ingredients label to just a very small QR Code that you have to scan in order to see if the product has Bioengineered Food Ingredients in it!!! They are concerned about the land but Bioengineered Food ingredients can cause Cancer!!! A nurse told me that they can’t figure out why so many people are getting CANCER right now!!!

Now I know why, when I was praying about what land to buy in Maine, that I was strongly impressed , after praying to God, that I should NOT buy ANYTHING zoned farmland in Maine....This is incredibly disturbing and people better wake up, repent to God.
