    Rey is in fact a Mary Sue. She comes from nowhere and is magically good (possibly a plotline that didn't get realized in Last Jedi, because of its "subverting expectations" thing), while Luke was at best alright and managed some training, both as a Jedi and in the rebellion. It's not a matter of things that didn't appear in the films.
    Also, it's a logical fallacy that Luke needs to be the best Jedi ever for Rey to be a Mary Sue. She's a Mary Sue, absent of anything Luke did.

      I liked Rey in "The Force Awakens". Then I saw "The Last Jedi" and completely gave up hope on Disney Star Wars. George Lucas or nothing for me. I'd rather watch 10 hours of Jar-Jar stepping in Bantha poodoo than another minute of "The Last Jedi".

    It's quite a bit funny that Rich and Jack make it sound like they believe "If it wasn't shown, it didn't happen".
    That's a fairly odd stance to take, regarding movies.

    Luke is a strong character; he tries, he fails, he learns. Is not a Gary Stu.
    Rey is a strong female character; she tries, she learns, she never fails. Is a Mary Sue.
    Luke has little training, is not a powerful jedi, and loses to Darth Vader, burnt and trapped in a machine keeping him alive, in their first encounter.
    Rey has little training, is a powerful jedi who wins against Kylo Ren who got shot in the gut, but shrugs/punches it off like it was nothing, in their first encounter.

    When i watched Star wars looong time ago, i just assumed that lukes journey in episode 4 took about couple of weeks, and i thought he was on dagobah for about 2-3 weeks as well. Same thing about episode 6, 2-3 weeks made sense for me. I had no idea that in Star wars universe you can apparently travel from one part of galaxy to another in 2 hours.

  • @jamesbeach7405
    @jamesbeach7405 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    This isn't a Marty Stu/ Mary Sue issue.
    Time compression in movies is always an issue unless time is explicitly mentioned. By Jack's logic the Lord of the rings movies takes place over a relatively short amount of time. Yet reasonably that can't be given the distances traveled and the fact our heroes are on foot. Gandalf rides on horse back across the whole territory in what seems like a night or two but in the books it's much e longer.
    Movies are a great way to tell stories, but they have weaknesses as a medium, a few being how to adequately show distance between locations and time between events. Devices like maps can be used like in Indiana Jones... but in something like star wars maps or titles that day "x months later " might feel out of place.
    The issue with the last Jedi is that they have an actual ticking clock... Time is explicitly mentioned in the movie. There's a line that states there's 18 hours of fuel left. No time is mention in any original trilogy movie. Thus a novelization can insert as much time as is needed. That can't happen with the last Jedi.

    • @elladeon
      @elladeon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This, so much! It was obvious that Luke wasn't on Dagoba very long, but that could have been 2 weeks, not 2 days, because it doesn't show a lot of what's going on.

    • @johnconnorpliskin7184
      @johnconnorpliskin7184 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      James Beach That’s a really good point actually. Hadn’t thought about that before. My only problem with Rey’s character is that it feels she goes through no hardships whatsoever. Almost without effort she overcomes all feats and there was no apparent struggle. She has a likable character, but this lack of struggle dehumanizes her to the point where I don’t care as much for wanting her to succeed as I do with Luke. Star Wars has the means to tell an effective story. Besides the OT, things like KOTOR, The Clone Wars cartoon, and various other media all tell their own effective stories without reusing OT material. Sure there are some similarities and minor details, however some of the stories told in these games are fantastic and can hold a candle to the originals. It just requires some creativity and risk taking. I believe we will get some good stories eventually, whichever format they’re in.

    • @jamesbeach7405
      @jamesbeach7405 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Connor Pliskin John Connor Pliskin I fully agree. KOTOR 1 and 2 are in my opinion the best star wars stories apart from the originals, and I wish those were made in to tv shows. This is where I disagree with The Rich Evans... Jedi and star wars generally can be a good story telling vehicle, but it's owned by corporations which are so risk averse that we might never see that. Thus ATATs!!! X-WINGs!!!! Bold new lightsaber shapes!!!! In KOTOR I as the player never flew a fighter ship and much of the game is spent talking to other characters. One might even say it's centered on having a good story with good characters. Combat was fun, but it was certainly not an action game.
      Thus I'd bet that star wars fan culture would accept different types of star wars movies if Disney were only to more fully commit to the concept.
      Stat trek fans overall loved DS9. Yeah there was some initial dissatisfaction or concern, but it told great stories and had great characters. Thus star trek didn't need to be constrained be having to always be centered on a ship. The change in setting allowed for new storytelling opportunities.
      Regarding Rey... I'm okay with her presentation in the force awakens because her past is a mystery. If the last Jedi were to have done the predictable thing and make her a descendant of Luke or obi wan I'd be okay with that or provide some explanation or her abilities. Instead she learned to be adept in a martial art in 18 hours and her mystery back story, if taking kylo ren at face value, is that she's thru daughter of random derelict patents. I see the new trilogy as Disney custom building a licencing and merchandising cash cow. Not telling a well thought out science fantasy epic inspired by Joseph Campbell and historical archetypes.

    • @johnconnorpliskin7184
      @johnconnorpliskin7184 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Beach Yeah, I agree. I only I hope that Rian Johnson has the potential to craft his own trilogy. It seems like he wanted to do something new with the TLJ but mishandled its sequel baggage. With the new trilogy, if he’s repeating the same shit then I guess we’ll all know he’s just a hack fraud.

    • @jamesbeach7405
      @jamesbeach7405 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Connor Pliskin Frankly, my hope for a good episode 9 is fairly low at this point. Perhaps a new trilogy is the answer... but even then... I'm not sure.

  • @mether3996
    @mether3996 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Jedi training should be very loose. It should not be a martial art that takes 17 years to become good at. Luke being somewhat competent at a lightsaber is acceptable in Empire even with a few days training, because what Yoda is really trying to teach him is the values of a Jedi i.e. the strength of the light side and the corruption of the dark. Really, the lessons from the Jedi teachings aren't gained through physical training, it's more about upholding the values in life outside of the training.
    It's the prequels fault, really.

    • @TheRevolucas
      @TheRevolucas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the prequels give a bad impression about the Jedi mainly because George Lucas is a bad writer. They turned out to be hypocritical morons when the original intention was that Jedi were more like an order of mystical knights (wizards with swords) or monks. Now everything since has made Jedi to look like idiots, this is even seen in Knights of the Old Republic games with Jedi being incompetent hypocrits that get themselves and everyone killed. Jedi weren't supposed to be ninjas that could blow up planets with their mind.
      Arguing semantics like this, anyway, is only relevant to Sci-fi which tries to explain how everything is possible in those settings but Star Wars is fantasy. It's about a boy aspiring for adventure who meets an old wizard and goes off to save a princess, ultimately he saves the galaxy; the setting just happens to be in space. The story has been told thousands of times and it's cliche almost intentionally. TFA followed similarly, it's a girl who aspires for adventure and helps save the galaxy, then meets an old wizard. TLJ throws all this shit out the window. It's a horrible film and it's not Star Wars.

      No, he's not talking about me; I don't care much about Star Wars, and I've always believed that Luke was a lame Mary Sue. And I'm also not the one "passionately and violently arguing with someone over Star Wars", as Rich does at the timestamp provided.
      Rich and Jack are fun streamers, but they're also serial hypocrites, and whenever they wax philosophical about the ethics of being a geek, it's pretty much guaranteed that somewhere within +/-2 hours of their statements, they've flagrantly violated their own ethical strictures.
      I'm just pointing this out because this time the behavior is completely unmistakable and the turnover happens comically fast.

    • @tangerinehomicide
      @tangerinehomicide 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Diana Moon Glampers rich isnt passionately arguing with anyone about anything. He's literally making fun of people who are rabid about star wars to the point where they are willing to send death threats to people and say horrible shit about the actors for no other reason other than internet pessimism about a fucking sci fi flick whos sole intention is to sell toys.
      Rich isnt passionate about star wars hes pasionate about losers on the internet.

      They consistently make nerddom as a whole look worse and worse every year.

    • @dianamoonglampers7997
      @dianamoonglampers7997 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He's arguing, and he's passionate - that, to me, satisfies the definition of "passionately arguing".
      I will gladly agree with you that _the form_ of his argumentation is purely rhetorical, based upon ridicule, ad hominem, and strawmen, and that his rhetorical approach to argumentation contrasts quite strongly with what most people think of when they hear the word "arguing", which is logical or rational argumentation. In THAT sense, yes - Rich is not so much "arguing" with the other side, as he is merely "passionately making fun of" the other side. But "passionate *bad* arguments" are still technically "passionate arguments", and if anything, the fact that Rich's arguments are so weak and logically-flawed makes them that much worse.

    • @tangerinehomicide
      @tangerinehomicide 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      he makes a sense to me, star wars fans dont know what they want. they want luke to be a fucking jedi superhero, but apparently its wrong when rey does it. so naturally they sound like fucking morons as rich wonderfully demonstrated. being a mary sue is wrong, unless you're luke skywalker. then it's okay.
      and i would say nothing really was hypocritical, jack said passionately as well as violently.
      none of what rich did was violent or offensive, unless rich's deft and accurate portrayal of the star wars fandom in 2018 hurt your precious precious fee fees.
      also is it considered passionate if someone just yells a lot to demonstrate incompetence?
      personally, i dont think so. rich just seems like a naturally loud person.

    Have you considered that Empire might not have been a very well put together movie?The entire sense of time is wrong. If you isolate the dagobah story line you would assume it is taking place over a long period of time since they montage between different activities and there is a clear progression arc. Intercutting it with han and leia in cloud city which clearly does take place over a few days leads you to think the different plot lines are happening simultaneously. For both story lines to make sense they can't be happening over the same time period doesn't work logically but they do because that is how the movie was put together.
