    When you create the WM do you set the connection as Bridged or do you use the WM adapters ?

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, in the VM lab environment, it's entirely up to you. You might want to consider NAT or bridging the connection initially to enable Internet connectivity, to activate the evaluation and install updates for better reliability. You if you wish, change the VMs network connection to internal network to isolate your testing lab.
      Hope this helps.

      @@ittaster I'm not going back to the office until next week so I'll let you know. I installed another PC I just built for them running Windows 11 the same day with no issues, so I'm assuming there isn't an issue with the router config, as last time I was in their office I had setup another windows 11 PC on their network. I saw a reddit post with having the same board I put in their server, but they didn't go in to detail on how they fixed it. This is a brand new build so everything should be working just fine. When I plug the ethernet cable I get the light, but still no connection. I tried messing with the drivers, but since they're for windows 10 and 11 they didn't work.

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@psychodelicloverboy Hi, for a test lab environment to learn Windows Server, you might want to consider something like a class c private address 192.168.0.1-254 with a 24 bit subnet mask (255.255.255.0). This will allow for 254 host addresses, which is plenty for a test lab. But remember to avoid using any addresses that may already be in use (like a router).

      Hi, if a server receives an IP address automatically, it will typically be from a pool of IP addresses issued by a DHCP server. These types of addresses are temporary (handed out) and can be re-issued to other devices. So it's really important to assign devices like servers an IP address doesn't change (static). This avoids problems with things like services etc. resolve to.
      Hope this helps?

  • @zt.5677
    @zt.5677 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello! May I have some questions? How do you generate a fix, static IP for the server? Can I just allocate one from within the subnet range I am on and see in the ipconfig table as IPv4 Address with the custom subnet mask? Why do we have to find a new IP by the way, why not just give the one we read in the ipconfig? (When WS 2019 is installed on a physical machine, not virtualized.) Should the DNS server IP be identical with what I see in the ipconfig? If not, how do I generate an IP for the DNS server? I think that my router does not function as a DNS server. Thank you.

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, in a production environment an organisation would plan the IP addressing scheme, depending on size. Organisations tend you use the private ranges from class A,B or C addresses. For you test lab you could choose an address that fits around your router's IP address range (typically DHCP). Ideally exclude the server address from DHCP. It's important to make the IP static for a server & services. For Windows server, client PCs need only the server as their DNS, but to access the internet, the server will need to know the gateway and ISP DNS.
      Hope this helps

    • @zt.5677
      @zt.5677 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ittaster Thank you. You mean that I should use the default DNS server IP given by my ISP and that I can read in the ipconfig under the Win server 2019 ; and the clients then are given the server IP as their DNS? (I intend to use a test PC as lab environment: I install Win server 2019 on the physical PC, run hyperV, and on hyperV I run a virtual server (same 2019 that runs on the physical PC) and two virtual machines with Windows 10. These virtual PCs are to be managed by the virtual server.)

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the Windows Server you might want to consider using you ISP or Google DNS server in DNS forwarders, but for primary server DNS and client DNS resolution, the AD integrated DNS server on your server.

    Do I need to have my router configured for static IP addresses for each computer on the network? My router is set for DHCP.

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, if your Windows DHCP server is connected to your Internet router, there will be issues having two DHCP server services running (Windows server & router). For a home test lab a possible suggestion might be to temporarily disable the DHCP server on the router while testing / learning on the server.

    when I try to ping my gateway it says that the destination unreachable
    and down there on events, I'm getting some error like
    server1 10010 error and so on...what can be the problem??

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I'd possibly begin by checking you can ping other devices (including loopback address 127.0.0.1). if your lab is virtual, it's worth checking the virtual switch setup too. If you haven't already, it's also worth double checking IP address settings for correct network & subnet masks.
      Hope this helps

    • @ittaster

      Hi, in the tutorial I used the network 192.168.0.0/24. This allows for 254 host devices (a range fairly typical for home networks) and likely to incorporate a test lab. The server can be any address in that range (192.168.0.1 - 254) but it's important to avoid IP addresses used by Internet routers and other end devices.

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the first thing to check is the IP range you assign to your server in your test lab. It will need to be on the same network as your router (if you are planning on accessing the Internet). After installing AD DS the server typically points to itself for DNS (for internal resolution). DNS forwarders are typically used to forward on non local queries to the ISPs DNS.

      @@ittaster I've been trying to figure this out myself for the longest with no luck. So, when I individually ping both the Server 2019 and Windows 10 on their virtual systems using "ipconfig" via CMD, am I using those (IP, subnet, gateway, DNS) credentials to setup the network for Active Directory? Because I cannot figure out why the VMs aren't replying to one another. I don't plan on using the internet, just practicing AD Domain Services, Exchange and troubleshooting.
      Hopefully get a response. I've been searching everywhere, and I'm at a loss now.

      It depends if you plan to install Active Directory Domain Services for testing, the server will need to be set to itself for DNS. Windows client devices need to look to the server for DNS too. If you are not installing AD DS role on your test server, you could use your router if it's a DNS server.
