I have been a children's tutor for many years, both paid and volunteer. I teach reading using phonics and have training in teaching people with dyslexia how to read using Saxon Phonics and Alphabetic Phonics. I love your videos and information! When I was in Americorps in the 1990s, we used the Steck-Vaughn Phonics Readers (1991) that are excellent. I seems that you haven't heard of these. There are 40 books in all with colored illustrations. These books start with two books each for the five short vowel sounds ("Matt and Rags," "Pam's Pal,": etc.) and two books each for the five long vowel sounds ("A Race on the Lake," "The Cake Bake," etc.). These are the only phonics-based books I have found for teaching beginning reading. I will now order your books too. Thank you so much!
I ordered these books 3 weeks ago and my son has been excitedly reading through them. He just finished book 12 yesterday! I had a rule with him that we could only attempt one new book a night. He likes to reread all the books most nights. Sometimes he would get tired as we neared book 8-11 and couldn't attempt any new books. Something you didn't mention in the video is that there is a cast of characters that come back and interact with each other throughout the books. He liked them as if they were friends, saying "That's Pat!!" when he came across the character in the next book. There are also little callbacks to previous books which made it feel more continuous. He was challenged by capital I looking like lowercase L. He seemed to sort it out by the end of the books but we had to help a lot to distinguish between the two. I emailed Spencer about this and he mentioned that it was done on purpose. (Thank you for responding so quickly!) My son did seem to figure it out eventually! I highly recommend these books and I hope you make more soon so that my son can read more about these characters while advancing to the next stage!
I am so excited to have found your content. Thank you algorithm. I have been reading since I was 4 thanks to Grandma. And have been feeling like a failure parent. Mine are 5 and 6 and cannot read. I have renewed hope.
Remember last year when i told my son was having trouble blending. Now hes blending amazing ans im so proud of him! Now im introducing big words😊 i love teaching him!!
Oh my goodness. You have so much passion that I love. I was thinking about how I wanted to find a better way to teach children to read. You showed up on my TH-cam feed 🤔😊. I have watched a few episodes and intend to sign up for your course. My heart is to take this to my church’s children’s ministry. I see that a lot of Bible stories that are hard to keep the children interested. I am always looking for ways to get children to learn without them realizing that is what I am doing. The age group I am privileged to serve is infants to 5 years. Thank you for all of your hard work. You and your team. I pray that you get millions of customers that see the value. I am a grandmother and wished this was available when my two were younger. I do plan to use this for my 8 year old grandson. He is struggling with reading. Congratulations and I wish you all the best. 😊🏆
OMG! You just solved my problem. I was looking for books for my 2.5 boy. And yes i have bought most of the ones you mentioned only to get disappointed. I thank God leading me to your videos too. They are helpful. Wish we had that kind of passion in all the people teaching our kids and doing business too😊
Wow I wish I had these when my son was younger, people will appreciate the parent guide as their kids get older and realise even though as parents we can read, knowing where to start in teaching a kid how to read is a challenge, you don’t even know where to start, so that alone is worth the money. Love your passion :)
Went to first grade in 1966, See John run. See spot sit. Spot is a dog. Spot is John's dog. Good ol 1960 reader. It was hard cover, and I was to keep it the whole school year, and I loved my reader. Never got tried of it. Sr.Anne Thomasina had each of us read from it daily. Was so excited to be called on and all of us were.
As someone from the UK it’s really interesting to see how different the beginner readers are over there. In England when kids start to read at 4-5 years old they are sent home phonic books normally matched to the phonics scheme the school uses and these books get changed maybe 3 times a week, every week throughout school for the first few years until they have finished learning phonics. So there are lots and lots of decodable books available for parents to buy if they wish to support their child’s reading or use earlier at home. Do schools in America not send home reading books? Or are the reading books ones like you have just shown?
I wish that was done, at least where I'm from in US that isn't the case. I've been purchasing boos, checking books out of the library and doing my own lesson plans centered around phonics for certain words in the books and using Toddlers Can Read approach and other free resources possible on diff media platforms. Even utilizing free tutoring programs through out library and public school system

They send home black and white printed readers and this is at a top school 😂
As I heal and forgive, having access to a treasure such as these books, will not only enhance so much in my life, but will also boost my family that will be able to be passed on for generations to come! Y’all nailed it! I praise Yah for such a gem 💎 for foundational education!
I'm a super picky homeschool mom. I've pieced together various reading material and most of it is custom made by me. I can resonate with the whiteboard approach 😂. But that being said, when I seen these books i knew it would be a very good investment! I even got the digital version to hold us off until our books arrive! Love this! Thanks!
You’re the best Spenser!!! Thank you so much making it simple and straight forward for us parents. You’re awesome at what you do! My 6 year old is in the beginning stages of blending cvs words and I’m so proud of her and I believe she’s ready for something a little more challenging! I will be purchasing these for Christmas! I will be recommending you to all my friends and family ❤
Love these. My 4yo son first read on the weekend using the Cat book from your collection. I found him reading it again by himself! We started with the digital version on my phone as well.
I'd love to see a short video from you on when and how to move from reading individual words to sentences. I've used your techniques with great success in teaching my daughter letter sounds and blending, but I'm unsure how to know whether she's ready to start reading sentences, and exactly how to ease her into it. I get the impression that you regard developing strong phonics fundamentals as more important than rushing into sentences, so I've stuck with improving her facility at decoding individual words, but I also wonder how to know when she's ready to take that next step, and what I need to do to develop that skill.
Looks great! I'm glad someone has addressed these issues in these so-called."Level 1" books. Not many decodable books that are actually interesting. I may have to check your books out!
Just purchased the printables! So excited to print and assemble them. We prefer the printables as we’re not in the US and we have 2 kids, 2 and 4. Some of their books are getting ripped off by the youngest most of the time. So when this one got torn apart, We can reprint and make again 😅. Thanks Spencer, your vids really helped us.
One thing I noticed 20 some years ago and I also noticed it in your books is the small letter 'a'. When I was teaching my son to read I looked in hundreds of books to see if any book had the letter 'a' printed the way you are taught to write it. It seems to me that they should print the letters the way they are taught to write them so that they are recognizable. The small letter 'a' is really the only letter in the alphabet that is typed in a completely different way than how it is written.
I love the details that has gone into the books. My only concern as a non-American, would the books have “mom” or any other words that are specific to American English? It has caused confusion for my kids

I can relate to this man's struggle to teach their child to read. It was almost a mirror image watching his introduction. I bought the same books on Amazon as he did and had the same disappointing reaction. And like him, I developed my own Decodable readers called "Little Sprouts" to fill in a massive gap in the market that should be there but isnt. I would like to make one point regarding pages per book. Less pages per book is a good thing for beginner readers as they dont have the mental stamina when first using their decoding skills to read independently. So a graded book series which begins with less pages and slowly builds up with more pages per book is better in my opinion. Also, there is another really good book series out there Julia Donaldson's Songbirds stage 1. They are wonderful decodable readers.
This is my first year as a kindies teacher and i really love all your videos they have been really helpful to me...i am reall need one of those set of books..how can i get one of this set of books for my school...
@toddlerscanread I got mine!!! My wife wants it to be a Christmas present. I just can't wait! I'll just have to get the flash Cards to help my patients!
Yes I tried to pre-order to Canada and it said $50 plus $22 shipping and there would be taxes on that as well I am assuming. This is in American dollars too so it would be over $100 Canadian. Eek that is a lot.

Wow, the marketing for these books is absolutely top-notch! Aside from that, you can tell you genuinely love what you do! I love your message telling parents that they can teach their kids how to read. I see so many parents who think that only teachers can teach their children(including my own). As a first time parent I know I am capable of teaching my son to read, I just need the right sources. I’ve seen the system fail children because parents failed to provide that support as far as educating their own children at home. I never want to be that parent. I just found you on IG this week. I’m watching all your videos and definitely researching before I make my purchase. I plan on buying the full system. I am just so glad to see a system that makes sense!
You indicated you were intentional with your font. However, your book along with so many others uses the "a" instead of the lower case A that is just a circle and a line (can't change my font) should I actually be teaching her 'a' instead?
The “ie” saying /i/ in the word “friends” that’s crazy, this book is wild! And inappropriate. Lol hahahaha very impressive video and explanation. I’m buying these books right now for my two baby boys
Sorry, this has just made me need to vent: At least there ARE lots of beginner options in English. In my first language, Hungarian, there is virtually nothing. Some publisher have recently come out with so-called beginner books - but even the lowest levels are full-on novels with really complicated stories that sometimes even I don't get, and complex words, with zero repetition, using serif font. Even many character names are made up. What on earth??? So I've had to make up my own books (so far, using photos of the children themselves, and describing what they're doing). It's really not that hard to come up with a suitable actual-beginner text. Why wouldn't they?? And yes, once I tried looking at a page as if I didn't know how to read, I also quickly realised I had to put an extra space between words. In fact, I put an extra space between the letters, and four spaces in between the words, and printed them super large: one short sentence on one A4 page. All doable, but sooo time-consuming to diy. I wish I could just pick these off of the shelf! Also, while I am happy with how my content has turned out for now, I'd love for my kids to read proper connected stories with matching pictures. But that would really cost me waaay to much time and money. Also, when I print at home, it's not technically going to be a "book". 😕

My approach is customizable to each kid because I teach parents how to teach reading in a way that is fun and fits into your daily life. It isn’t a script!
Thanks for the kind words! The steps to teach a little one and an older reader are the same. First find out where your child is skill wise and then if you want support teaching them I have courses to help. Here's a blog to help you assess your child's reading skills: www.toddlersread.com/blog/how-to-assess-your-childs-reading-ability-at-home
My niece started reading Bob books, but she just got bored of them. They don't interest her anymore. So I've been writing sentences on a whiteboard we have here. I'd love to order your decodable books, because I trust in your work. However, being from a different country doesn't help. Taxes over imported goods in Brazil are insane lately. Are there digital options for people outside America?
Wow ive found several middle schoolers can't spell wonder ifnthis continues to the sight word approach to reading and not knowing the rules or sounding them out. I've tried teach my kiddo sound it out whike teacher corrected me feel sight words are awful as well nothing memorized is every learned or does it stick well idk just some thoughts?
Me: has a 22mo old “toddler” watching your videos thinking “oh dang, im suppose to be teaching her to read already?! We just reached staying in bed or interested in short bedtime story” Toddler* is too loose of a term/age range for my primitive parenting brain to understand
I am in need of decodable books for my second graders. They are at the reading stage. My students can read but are below grade level. So I am wondering if the books that you offer are appropriate for this age of reader? I am a first year Literacy Interventionist and I am looking for best practices and materials. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It's less about age and more about their reading stage. Look for books or passages with words that match what they can blend/decode. These books grow in difficulty with how many words on the page/in the sentence as it progresses books 1-12 and are mostly for kids who can blend 3-4 sound words and some tricky words.
@@toddlerscanread Thank you for your prompt response. I understand what you are talking about the more I watch your videos. I am going to proceed with the decodables. So happy to see that there is a Set 2!
These are great, however the series progresses way too fast. Each book in my opinion is almost like the next chapter. Yall should create a series of level ones with only one tricky word. Then a series of level twos with two tricky words that repeat throughout the series. And so on. Cause my daughter who’s 3.5 years old was able to read the first 3 books or so, but as she got to the higher numbers she stopped having fun cause there were too many tricky words that don’t make sense phonetically.
Hey there, little ones do need more support with tricky words which I offer in my Reading Rules online course. Here's a free resource to support you with tricky words: www.toddlersread.com/pages/sight-word-flashcard-freebie

How can I order?
Can you tell me what makes your program different from All About Reading? I have been researching and was about to purchase it and one of your videos showed up. I am very interested it your process and am now considering purchasing your program. Thank you
My approach is customizable to each kid because I teach parents how to teach reading in a way that is fun and fits into your daily life. It isn’t a script!
Anyone have the link to this? These look perfect for my new student
So glad I found you for my child!!
Hey love what you doing I have a question what can a parent do if a 3 grader can not read well. What steps can be taking?
Thanks for the kind words! The steps to teach a little one and an older reader are the same. First find out where your child is skill wise and then if you want support teaching them I have courses to help. Here's a blog to help you assess your child's reading skills: www.toddlersread.com/blog/how-to-assess-your-childs-reading-ability-at-home

Where do I order
My niece started reading Bob books, but she just got bored of them. They don't interest her anymore. So I've been writing sentences on a whiteboard we have here. I'd love to order your decodable books, because I trust in your work. However, being from a different country doesn't help. Taxes over imported goods in Brazil are insane lately. Are there digital options for people outside America?

Do these works for kids with Dyslexia?
Me: has a 22mo old “toddler” watching your videos thinking “oh dang, im suppose to be teaching her to read already?! We just reached staying in bed or interested in short bedtime story” Toddler* is too loose of a term/age range for my primitive parenting brain to understand
The over selling makes me think your scamming cuz so many people are scamming nowadays... Do you have a return policy or anything like that?
what if I’m trying to teach myself how to read
I want the books
I hate the lack of diversity in American early reading books.
Are you the owner of Teacher Created Resources?
I am not.
Please release those in other european languages...
