Another thing this video makes me think of is how common it is to attribute great coaching ability to a coach who is lucky enough to work with a successful athlete. Now, if you send 30 average people to a coach who is somehow able to transform them all into elite athletes, then it would stand to reason to assume that coach is doing something right. But more often then not, what happens is a talented athlete joins up with a coach because of his social skills, charisma, reputation, or a previously existing friendship, and then that coach will parlay that athlete’s success into self aggrandizing propaganda. And people will accept it because, hey, he did coach an elite athlete after all.

In my experience, if a trainer can’t explain the how’s and why’s of techniques in simple language that an average person could understand, and instead turn a simple exercise into a complex linguistics experiment that requires multiple PhD’s in both philology and kinesthesiology to interpret, then there’s something wrong.

PERFECTLY explained. If you're truly knowledgeable about a topic and you're able to convey that wisdom to the average person you may call yourself a great teacher. If you have to rely on jargon to sound smart because you're incapable of explaining things in normal terms you automatically disqualify yourself as a great teacher. Imagine getting taught by someone on your first training of a sport and it sounds something like "First, you take the dinglebop and you smooth it out with a bunch of schleem. The schleem is then repurposed for later batches. Then you take the dinglebop and push it through the grumbo."
When we oversimplify, the information becomes altered in translation. How can a calculus teacher explain a problem to a student when the student did not take pre-calc in order to learn the definition of a function, derivative, integral, or logarithm. These are complex ideas that allow the learner to build on and solve new problems to continue learning. The idea that the complexity of the body should be reduced is a platform for failure, just like you wouldn't allow a college kid to take a course without first taking a prerequisite. If you're interested in learning more I could point you to a Rob Gray video that presents better information for the WHY behind this. Reducing complexity in the body is like saying a car drives with its wheels. But we know the engine, transmission, differential, axles, and steering wheel are all necessary for it to drive. If you ask a mechanic, someone with knowledge, what the most important part of the car is, they may give you a more reasonable answer than a child with no knowledge. Fear of seeking available knowledge leads to us being more like the child and less like the mechanic. Now a good mechanic can describe the inner workings of a car, but she will first have to explain the difference between a transmission and a differential if you don't already know. COMPLICATED is not the same as COMPLEXITY. When we don't understand that a system is complex, we accuse the teacher of making this complicated...
You're right. Even IF these exercises had some sort of benefits that traditional exercises don't provide you're taking away from the effectiveness of the workout by slowing down the pace tremendously because you're setting up so much with so much equipment, taking up so much space. Why are we even analyzing this bullshit...😂
I'm feeling really bad for newbies falling for this guy and terribly overthinking every exercise. He says that you need to be mindful of push ups being a rotational movement around your feet...
The problem with his programming (other than what you've said) is that there's no progression. How do you know if you're actually getting stronger or more fit? Your body is just adapting to a different set of skills every exercise. You're essentially not moving forward or backwards towards a goal, just like weirdly taking steps side to side forcing your nervous system to adapt to ridiculous movements that have no specific focus on progressing. The squat works because it's a general enough movement that it allows you to get the strongest with minimal adapting to other lower body power exercises. If you can squat heavy, you can probably lunge heavy, hip hinge heavy, jump high, etc. After you squat heavy, then you can focus on little specific movements. God damn I've always wanted to just comment this on one of his posts but I know it would be futile lol.
You make good sense, man. But is the progress really untrackable? It can be visual, like muscles growing, or motorics improving that could be seen in other aspects of life.

However, tying an improvement on the field to that of the weightroom in many cases is disingenuous. It’s really a catch 22 when critiquing this man. So your point is definitely valid. Does he even has programs or every single training day exercises are completely new (he can literally create a computer program that could randomly generate both exercises and their scientific explanations indefinitely). I think if someone would measure in terms of regular squat/deadlift/bench press he could just wave results off by pretence that their improvement wasn't the goal of training, but I'm still very interested in specifics of chaos and anti-chaos dynamics though - that is an interesting subject.

11:35 I actually did this silly exercise to train tire flips for a strongman competition back when I was nursing a small injury on my right hand in 2018. It's not a perfect tool at all, but it does allow you to train your leg drive in flipping tires when injured. The main problem is that you need to load it with huge amounts of weight to simulate a heavy tractor tire, and those rings or TRX ropes are not designed to handle a 400+ kilogram tension, so you end up risking more injuries doing it -- unless you're lucky like me and actually have like 2 sets of TRX bands on both sides to hold the bar. There's also the reverse hack squat machine which is far superior, but it's a pretty rare and expensive machine to have for such a niche purpose.
I love that video you did with Allan! Seedman is my go to example of a fitness charlatan when explaining to ppl why the most simple approach is often the most effective.

Zack I'm not gonna say I told you so, but I told you so. The only way to win is by dunking on those who challenge us. Take Garret for example: a 12 year old swimmer who spells his name with one T instead of two. I made him do 20 100m sprints on a 1:10 base. He told me that he could not hold that pace. I told him his name is spelled with 1 T and no one cares what a Garret with one T has to say. Was he right...Absolutely. He didn't even manage to get through 4 before he fell off the pace. I punished him for not making it through the set by forcing him to spell his name with two Ts. He had to swim 10 200's fly, and every breath he took he had to give one letter of his name. If he didn't spell his name with two Ts, he had to start that 200 over again. Garret may have had a point that this set was too hard for him, but using my position of power I ensured that his point was not well taken. Garrett should always be spelled with two Ts.
This reminds me of when "muscle confusion" was hot. Always chasing novel exercises You get delayed onset muscle soreness to make you feel like you've made progress. And if you're always trying something new you always get newbie gains in your dumbshit exercises. As an added bonus they don't have to compete with people who spend years perfecting their lifts.
I mean having a diverse range of movements in the long run will develop a balanced physique, but you don't have to juggle on top of bosu balls or foam rollers to develop your entire body.

Joel Seedman is the epitome of why I'm mostly moving out of the fitness industry as a gymnastics and strength coach full-time. The more established I get in my city (Halifax, Nova Scotia), the more bullshit I get exposed to similar to this. It's exhausting, and you simply CANNOT fan through all of it.

This is one of the best fitness vids I’ve seen in a long time. You’re the first to mention set up. Notice how Joel never shows setup. It must take forever- I will cut an exercise out of my routine if the setup disrupts the workout too much
TB12 method obviously works though. And if you actually read the book you'd know that he says that different positions need to train differently. He even says that lineman need to brace against heavy loads
I believe people is overthinking what Seedman is doing. Per example, the offset exercises that he is doing with the barbell aren't new, he only is doing offset exercises that are normally performed with a sledgehammer or a TRX Rip Trainer but with a barbell (he only change the equipment and presented it as something new). In addition, in the video, he also turned gymnastic rings and a barbell as a hack squad machine and he his doing abs rolling with an offset barbell instead of using an abs rollers wheel with turns. I believe are the same old exercises but with different equipments in order to present them as something new.

@@benjaminw2354 I reached out to his school about his PhD. The department head looked at his work and said that he doesn't represent any of the things they taught at the school. He's literally just making it up.
In my heart of hearts, I believe that a typical squat is not good enough. I was squatting 405 4x8, deep, good form, and preached everyone DO squats, BUT I still had insane weaknesses in my groin, hips, hamstrings. Feeling strong and having to see my numbers go up is rewarding. Still, it's not until I started focusing on improving my stability/balance and addressing specific weaknesses by doing Copenhagen holds, Nordic curls, and many lunge variations (just to name the basics) that I saw significant improvements in how I feel playing sports and regular day-to-day. If the goal is to get big and look strong, sure linear progression, absolute strengths, yeahhhh, let's go! If the goal is improved athletic performance, IMO improving balance/stability and strength the way Joel Seedman is doing is the way to go.
In my opinion, "movement culture" is a far better option. Lee Weiland from Powerbatics or StrengthSide would be okay. Loads of functional stuff backed by loads of studies and papers on The Bioneer TH-cam page aswell.

As a strength & conditioning coach I have the same thoughts on a daily basis. S&C influencers are the snake oil salesmen of our time and our field. Just yesterday I saw Vernon Griffith describing a, “...hang clean received in a deep split squat position with rapid deceleration and an upright torso.” Or, as we would call it, a hang split clean or a split clean from the hang. There’s no need to make things so complicated unless you’re trying to jargon yourself into making clients.
It’s funny because I would do stuff like this as a joke Snapchat or something messing around in the gym to be funny. This guy is selling this is legit stuff. Let that sink in.
Understand this video and your thought process here. I must admit, though, I’ve been implementing many of his exercises in to my routine over the past 2 months or so while Ironman training. I’ve seen a vast improvement, in my strength, power and certainly joint pain before transitioning to this method of training

I saw a guy with a trainer doing reverse, one-side loaded, barbell bench press (I think is how to describe it). I gawked for a minute and asked where he came up with that. The trainer looked worried and the guy doing said it smiled and replied it was rehab. I smiled, thanked the guy, and walked off. But I've always wondered if it was this "functional" training.
If you've got an athlete who is overworking themselves and just needs to chill, send them to the Seedyman for a couple sessions each week. "Yeah, dude. Just, uh, do these rapid air bicep curls. They'll activate your hip drive or whatever." They'll be like sneaky rest days.
You would think that Professional Sports teams would be able to cut through this kind of bullshit. Guess not, but the bicep curls are pretty hilarious!
I’m a physical therapist and honestly Speedman’s exercise all revolve around core strengthening and stabilization. Of course they look weird but they are actually incredibly high level and difficult to perform. They will quite literally make your core muscles and spine bulletproof. Of course in my rehab facility I don’t do these same exercises because my patients aren’t athletes, but I promise if you give some of these exercises a try (minus the bodyweight flailing) you’ll be impressed with the results. Your MAX’s will go up and you back will feel better.
The funny part is that most of the exercises presented in the video are normal old exercises performed with equipment that make them look strange. Per example: 1) the offset with the barbell are normally performed with a sledgehammer or a TRX Trainer; 2) he is using an offset weight barbell to do abs roller exercises instead of using a normal abs roller wheel and turn to the sides; 3) he turn gymnastic rings and a barbell into a hack squat machine.
High level and difficult to perform don’t necessarily equate to effective though. Like . . . Juggling while riding a unicycle is both high level and difficult to perform but it won’t improve your vertical
The issue I have with this video is that strength coaches often fail to consider CONTEXT. An exercise physiologist I admire once told me "Watts are watts!" He was so enthusiastic about this measuring tool for power because it didn't matter if you were on the MOON, MOUNTAIN, or Ocean floor, the tool was applicable across all ENVIRONMENTS. Further, you can not use a measuring tool you do not understand. Take a SLIDE RULE, for instance, I have no idea how to use on, but if I didn't have access to a graphing calculator I would've had to learn how to use one to pass my math classes... Incremental increases in terms of volume in the weight room is one tool by which adaptation is defined. Most would agree that a STRONGER ATHLETE is a more optimal performer, however you can also find cases where increases in strength produce detrimental performance when the arena considered becomes specific. The GOAL as a performance coach should be to utilize all available tools and construct constraints so that many outcomes can be measured as objectively as possible. To a novice, a measuring tool that may have OBJECTIVITY may appear totally SUBJECTIVE. You cannot judge whether or not a measuring tool is working if you don't think the tool exists, or your AVAILABLE INFORMATION has led to such a conclusion. Most health professionals view LIFESTYLE modifications as a key component in both optimal performance and overall health. We agree that you must consume a certain amount of protein to build muscle, yet this is a lifestyle component that should largely not occur in the weight room... As a coach, when I challenged myself to create constraints with respect to movement and exercise that deviated from a traditional weight room culture, I discovered huge lifestyle improvements in terms of my short term memory, mental health, stress, efficiency, achievement and I became a more adaptable and complete organism. These are traits that can directly influence on-field performance AS WELL! The classical weight room approach seeks to entirely FILL ONLY ONE COMPARTMENT while leaving others very low. And this itself does not create high-quality, dynamic organisms. Even though you may not understand something, you need to step over your fear of encountering information that may disconfirm the biases you've built over your lifetime, and continue to seek available information. By demonstrating fear, you create a poor example for your athletes and the lives they should be learning to lead. (Remember, RICE is out the WINDOW... "DR. MIRKIN recanted his original position on the protocol in 2015!") The athletic training culture still lives in the DARK AGES and chances are that some of us may be as well! COMPLICATED, COMPLEXITY, and CHAOS are all different things.
If we are being honest, top tier athletes that have mastered all the basics and already have elite core strength MIGHT benefit from this with really hands-on coaching. For anyone else, this stuff is just dangerous

11:35 I actually did this silly exercise to train tire flips for a strongman competition back when I was nursing a small injury on my right hand in 2018. It's not a perfect tool at all, but it does allow you to train your leg drive in flipping tires when injured.
The main problem is that you need to load it with huge amounts of weight to simulate a heavy tractor tire, and those rings or TRX ropes are not designed to handle a 400+ kilogram tension, so you end up risking more injuries doing it -- unless you're lucky like me and actually have like 2 sets of TRX bands on both sides to hold the bar.
There's also the reverse hack squat machine which is far superior, but it's a pretty rare and expensive machine to have for such a niche purpose.
I love that video you did with Allan! Seedman is my go to example of a fitness charlatan when explaining to ppl why the most simple approach is often the most effective.

Zack I'm not gonna say I told you so, but I told you so. The only way to win is by dunking on those who challenge us. Take Garret for example: a 12 year old swimmer who spells his name with one T instead of two. I made him do 20 100m sprints on a 1:10 base. He told me that he could not hold that pace. I told him his name is spelled with 1 T and no one cares what a Garret with one T has to say. Was he right...Absolutely. He didn't even manage to get through 4 before he fell off the pace. I punished him for not making it through the set by forcing him to spell his name with two Ts. He had to swim 10 200's fly, and every breath he took he had to give one letter of his name. If he didn't spell his name with two Ts, he had to start that 200 over again. Garret may have had a point that this set was too hard for him, but using my position of power I ensured that his point was not well taken. Garrett should always be spelled with two Ts.

As an added bonus they don't have to compete with people who spend years perfecting their lifts.
I mean having a diverse range of movements in the long run will develop a balanced physique, but you don't have to juggle on top of bosu balls or foam rollers to develop your entire body.
I've seen people randomize their exercises. That way the muscles can't anticipate what's coming.

I believe people is overthinking what Seedman is doing. Per example, the offset exercises that he is doing with the barbell aren't new, he only is doing offset exercises that are normally performed with a sledgehammer or a TRX Rip Trainer but with a barbell (he only change the equipment and presented it as something new). In addition, in the video, he also turned gymnastic rings and a barbell as a hack squad machine and he his doing abs rolling with an offset barbell instead of using an abs rollers wheel with turns. I believe are the same old exercises but with different equipments in order to present them as something new.

I added chains to my 3 sets of squats this morning and felt like I might be getting too carried away.

In my heart of hearts, I believe that a typical squat is not good enough. I was squatting 405 4x8, deep, good form, and preached everyone DO squats, BUT I still had insane weaknesses in my groin, hips, hamstrings. Feeling strong and having to see my numbers go up is rewarding. Still, it's not until I started focusing on improving my stability/balance and addressing specific weaknesses by doing Copenhagen holds, Nordic curls, and many lunge variations (just to name the basics) that I saw significant improvements in how I feel playing sports and regular day-to-day.
If the goal is to get big and look strong, sure linear progression, absolute strengths, yeahhhh, let's go!
If the goal is improved athletic performance, IMO improving balance/stability and strength the way Joel Seedman is doing is the way to go.
In my opinion, "movement culture" is a far better option.
Lee Weiland from Powerbatics or StrengthSide would be okay.

Not as the Main exercise, but as an secondary acsessory exercise? Or as a variation for the classical bench press (or as a speed exercise)?

As a strength & conditioning coach I have the same thoughts on a daily basis. S&C influencers are the snake oil salesmen of our time and our field.
Just yesterday I saw Vernon Griffith describing a, “...hang clean received in a deep split squat position with rapid deceleration and an upright torso.” Or, as we would call it, a hang split clean or a split clean from the hang. There’s no need to make things so complicated unless you’re trying to jargon yourself into making clients.
It’s funny because I would do stuff like this as a joke Snapchat or something messing around in the gym to be funny. This guy is selling this is legit stuff. Let that sink in.
Understand this video and your thought process here. I must admit, though, I’ve been implementing many of his exercises in to my routine over the past 2 months or so while Ironman training. I’ve seen a vast improvement, in my strength, power and certainly joint pain before transitioning to this method of training

I saw a guy with a trainer doing reverse, one-side loaded, barbell bench press (I think is how to describe it). I gawked for a minute and asked where he came up with that. The trainer looked worried and the guy doing said it smiled and replied it was rehab. I smiled, thanked the guy, and walked off.
But I've always wondered if it was this "functional" training.

If you've got an athlete who is overworking themselves and just needs to chill, send them to the Seedyman for a couple sessions each week. "Yeah, dude. Just, uh, do these rapid air bicep curls. They'll activate your hip drive or whatever." They'll be like sneaky rest days.
You would think that Professional Sports teams would be able to cut through this kind of bullshit. Guess not, but the bicep curls are pretty hilarious!

I’m a physical therapist and honestly Speedman’s exercise all revolve around core strengthening and stabilization. Of course they look weird but they are actually incredibly high level and difficult to perform. They will quite literally make your core muscles and spine bulletproof. Of course in my rehab facility I don’t do these same exercises because my patients aren’t athletes, but I promise if you give some of these exercises a try (minus the bodyweight flailing) you’ll be impressed with the results. Your MAX’s will go up and you back will feel better.
The funny part is that most of the exercises presented in the video are normal old exercises performed with equipment that make them look strange. Per example: 1) the offset with the barbell are normally performed with a sledgehammer or a TRX Trainer; 2) he is using an offset weight barbell to do abs roller exercises instead of using a normal abs roller wheel and turn to the sides; 3) he turn gymnastic rings and a barbell into a hack squat machine.
High level and difficult to perform don’t necessarily equate to effective though. Like . . . Juggling while riding a unicycle is both high level and difficult to perform but it won’t improve your vertical
The issue I have with this video is that strength coaches often fail to consider CONTEXT. An exercise physiologist I admire once told me "Watts are watts!" He was so enthusiastic about this measuring tool for power because it didn't matter if you were on the MOON, MOUNTAIN, or Ocean floor, the tool was applicable across all ENVIRONMENTS. Further, you can not use a measuring tool you do not understand. Take a SLIDE RULE, for instance, I have no idea how to use on, but if I didn't have access to a graphing calculator I would've had to learn how to use one to pass my math classes... Incremental increases in terms of volume in the weight room is one tool by which adaptation is defined.
Most would agree that a STRONGER ATHLETE is a more optimal performer, however you can also find cases where increases in strength produce detrimental performance when the arena considered becomes specific. The GOAL as a performance coach should be to utilize all available tools and construct constraints so that many outcomes can be measured as objectively as possible. To a novice, a measuring tool that may have OBJECTIVITY may appear totally SUBJECTIVE. You cannot judge whether or not a measuring tool is working if you don't think the tool exists, or your AVAILABLE INFORMATION has led to such a conclusion. Most health professionals view LIFESTYLE modifications as a key component in both optimal performance and overall health. We agree that you must consume a certain amount of protein to build muscle, yet this is a lifestyle component that should largely not occur in the weight room...
As a coach, when I challenged myself to create constraints with respect to movement and exercise that deviated from a traditional weight room culture, I discovered huge lifestyle improvements in terms of my short term memory, mental health, stress, efficiency, achievement and I became a more adaptable and complete organism. These are traits that can directly influence on-field performance AS WELL! The classical weight room approach seeks to entirely FILL ONLY ONE COMPARTMENT while leaving others very low. And this itself does not create high-quality, dynamic organisms. Even though you may not understand something, you need to step over your fear of encountering information that may disconfirm the biases you've built over your lifetime, and continue to seek available information. By demonstrating fear, you create a poor example for your athletes and the lives they should be learning to lead. (Remember, RICE is out the WINDOW... "DR. MIRKIN recanted his original position on the protocol in 2015!") The athletic training culture still lives in the DARK AGES and chances are that some of us may be as well!
COMPLICATED, COMPLEXITY, and CHAOS are all different things.

If we are being honest, top tier athletes that have mastered all the basics and already have elite core strength MIGHT benefit from this with really hands-on coaching. For anyone else, this stuff is just dangerous
