The Reason manual is excellent but the section about comping is hard work - so much so that I've never used it Thank you for this. I can see myself using it now. Also, I'm inspired to record more to audio rather than MIDI. 👍👍
Thanks! Yeah it wasn't easy to get through but I did it for you! I also will be recording more audio. There were some in the comments asking why record an internal synth as audio. It was mostly just as an example but I kinda like that workflow a bit now. I have a problem committing to an idea and I think this will help. A lot of pros I see commit way earlier than I do, bouncing tracks to audio minutes after they recorded the midi, and there must be something to that. Also a lot of pros have outboard synths and are recording to audio straight away. Thanks for watching!
i just rewatch this because for the first time i seriously recorded voices in Reason for a song. Couldnt cut a part in the comping edit segment. Now thx to u I know what im doing. Thx again Quas :) .
DAMN.. been using reason forever and i didnt about this, or vocal comping in general 😂😂 so much for being an electronic musician.. thanks for the video!
Thank you so much! I’ve been finding myself accidentally getting into comp edit mode and not understanding anything of what I was seeing. This cleared it right up! One thing though, for the case of just making timing adjustments, slice edit seems much easier. But good to know it can be done with comp editing too.
This video is so helpful. Thank you brother. I love these Reason audio editing videos since not enough attention is given to that side of the software.
Great video. You covered everything I do (and have done in Comp Edit mode since it was introduced back in v6) with comp edit mode and more. I never knew you could duplicate the lane by holding Alt + Ctrl (so handy), I have always just right clicked and selected Duplicate lane as it doesn't tell you a shortcut in that drop down menu.
The comp editor is great for single audio channels like this one. I love it. However, Reason is still difficult to use when you need to comp or edit multiple tracks of audio together. Things like a drum track or a multi miked or sourced guitar track. I have done this in Reason but it is difficult and depending on how many tracks you are dealing with, you can make mistakes easily. They really need to add group editing.
i am not a keyboard player so i do it another way.. play and record the midi notes and fix all mistakes and when i am done.. i just record the audio as you have done but without having to play around with the audio i play around with the midi notes.
Of course. I was just making an example. Like as if you were recording hardware a synth in the room. I would recommend you learn the basics of playing keys, tho. It hells immensely. You could start by learning scales. Good luck!
This is definitely a feature I overlooked. I could see myself using it for drum parts like you showed. I like to manipulate samples in the sequencer rather than using a NNXT or whatever, but I always found the fade function lacking so maybe going into comp mode will open up possibilities I never thought of.
Ive been using Reason since version 5, when everyone used ReCycle. Lol anyone old enough to remember that? Pro Tools used to be the standard. I spent 3 years in prison and when I got out I realized how far recording software has come. Ill always use reason but I have started using logic for my physical instruments and for my podcast. Do you think Reason can give me a good podcast mix? Anyone else here use it for that?
Could you please make a video about Basic and Advanced Audio Editing, like for Fine Repair corrections, sampling 1990’s style, and Event/ Region /clips etc. zooming into Zero Crossing, And Cross fades and Such. Im coming from Protools and it’s been slow to digest the detail side of Reason. Thanks for your great Content. I do subscribe
hi. is there a reason you dont start at bar 1? to 4? also i also have issue catching that end trail of a note it seems to get cut off and not looop back into 1 sometimes? how can i remedy that? i will put your vid into practice later but now im just trying to understand. thanks glad i found liked and suscribed today i really like your style and approach very listenable to if that makes any sense. loved your vid on ableton vs reason, gotta a buddy who likes ableton and ive been trying to justify using it..but reason is the shit. i aslo like reaper
Im watching this video and over on reason 12 latest release maybe they got rid of that speaker tool because its not there for me. Not sure if i ever seen it. and i know reason is completely up to date, i even have Reason+
I never knew about this feature/workflow. Is there a similar tool for midi recording because it usually takes me 3-4x to get it close to right without flubbing a note
I really only did it as an example. You would really only record outboard gear, instruments, or your voice like this. I have none of those things (haha) so I recorded an internal synth to show you how to comp. Just an example. And yes audio is easier on CPU than loading an instrument and playing midi.
what you do is convert midi to audio before recording, record (multiple) and edit. Can I record and record this with midi? REASON or I misunderstood from the beginning. When I said ableton from Maschine, I got a little confused about the reason, but I think I'll go to reason.
Hope this helps you all out!!
"Comp Edit is pretty powerful". No truer word said. Again, another great video!
Thank you!

Greetings from Turkey. Thanks for your explanation. You did what propeller heads couldn't. this is so perfect.. :)
Thank you so much! See you in the next one!
Great info in this video. I was getting impatient and almost left the video (all of those takes). Cool homie.
Thanks for hanging in there! haha
Great stuff. Keep it coming!
Thanks! Will do!
Been looking for a proper comping tutorial for ages so thanks for this. It's going to make my workflow SO much easier. Champ!

@@itsdjQuasar hyped for R13?
@@Nenko_Music Yeah. I always try and temper my expectations, though. 🙃
@@itsdjQuasar wise man ! :D

NO worries! Glad to have helped...
I learned how to comp from your original vocal comping tutorial. This update video is great, thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
This was really useful , thank you i spend some hours to find good video about recording in reason
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
I consider myself a fairly seasoned reason user but still I had missed many of these features. Thank you great stuff!
Glad I could help!
Thank you DJQ. Had to refresh my- self and go through this again. So helpful. Looking forward to all your future tutorials.
Thanks for watching!
Best explanation I've seen on editing and comping audio in the Reason DAW, thanks!
Thanks! See you in the next one!
This is your best video, for me, so far. Thanks for this, I never could understand the comp editor, and I really need it!
Thank you! Glad I could help!
I haven’t comped in reason in years nice revisit dj
Nice! Thanks for watching!
So helpful- use to editing audio in Pro Tools, but was at a loss about doing so in Reason. Thanks so much from a long time Reason user.

The reason to use comp over slice is if you don't want to stretch things. Stretching changes the sound a bit.
Thanks for these awesome videos. Please keep it up!
Will do! Thanks for watching!
Thanks. Very helpful. I saved for later. But I see the process.
Nice tuto.

I hear that. Group editing and phase locking (for drums) would be clutch.

I mix podcasts on reason. Doesn't quite matter what DAW you use for that type of mixing.

I'll add it to the list. Why would one need to zoom into zero crossings? That's what fades are for, no? Unless I'm missing something. I'm curious.

Not in reason. One of the things that is truly missing from the sequencer.
Thanks for watching!!
Super channel here!
Hello brother, quick question, how do I get rid of clicks when using Mimic 8 slot mode?
You know I haven't used mimic much. Perhaps I should dive in...
@@itsdjQuasar I kinda fixed the issue, but yes give it a go.
How did you drag up the sliced portion to the silenced area? Do I just drag up with the arrow tool or press a combination of keys and drag up?
You double click in the silence lane. Or just make the slice in that lane instead of on the lane with the audio.
Great vid. Thanks for this.
Thank you for watching! More to come!
Всегда использую comp edit для вокала!
Да, он отлично подходит для вокала. Я упомянул об этом в видео. У меня просто не было вокала, и я не хотел петь. Ха-ха Спасибо за просмотр!

Yeah you can record midi... was recording as audio for the example.
My question now becomes, why would I comp in hip hop/rap/trap?
You may record vocals one day. I also use it to chop samples up.
Why aren't you bobbing and vibing to your studio.
niceeeeeeee
Thanks! See you in the next one!
