Daigo has earned his wings 1000 times over. He doesn't have to prove anything anymore. There are younger players with more to prove that will be more and more difficult to compete with as he ages. These newer players have taken the spotlight. And I really like a lot of them. But I will always want to see Daigo compete. And I will always cheer for him in any matchup.
Yeah whatever. So now he's just an has-been ? I really don't think he would enjoy the way you think. I don't think he ever played to prove something. Back in 2009-2010 Japan was so ahead of everyone in SV IV and Daigo was one of the few Japanese player making the trip to EVO. I don't want to undermine his achievement, but that prob the reason why he don't destroy everyone anymore. Simply put. There's more player around his level now. I respect the guy and he's one of the best player at fighting game in the world. But his status was always a bit over the top.
Has-been? Your words, not mine. Nobody can stay at the top forever. You get older and can't do the same things you once could. That's just a fact of life. It doesn't take away from what he's achieved. Michael Jordan was once the greatest basketball player ever to grace the sport. Time passed, he got older and couldn't do it anymore so he started coaching. I don't think you need to throw around a term like "has-been" just because somebody can't perform at their peak level anymore. Nobody can do that forever. Daigo is in his 30's the new champs are early 20's and even younger in some cases. That's why Daigo isn't finishing top 8 anymore. Pit the younger prime Daigo against these new cats and it'd be a different story.
Oh and Daigo certainly played to prove something. Not to others but to himself. You yourself are your biggest and most difficult adversary. Daigo understand this as do most serious competitors.
Daigo earned is props mad respect to his skill and for what he done I tip my hat to him Crimson has ways to go before he can over throw Daigo with Dhalism
Actually there is a manga of his teen years in SF out in Japan right now. Basically from 1994-1998 era I think. I think as of 8 months ago it has sold over 100k copies.
For some reason Daigo inspires confidence and resolve even though he doesnt always win, and thats a trait not many people can say they have. You always want to root for him and his adversary always becomes the bad guy. I do hope he continues in the FGC for many years more to come.
Indeed. Just like how Ryu is the poster boy for SF, Daigo is like the main protagonist of the FGC, whenever he is on stage/stream you know there's always going to be hype. I expect him to come back even stronger next year.
He will always be known as the beast. Evo moment 37 was the start of the FGC being taken to a serious level in the West. The stars aligned, and Daigo has stayed stoic and humble
I love how he is able to separate his 'Umehara' persona from his real personality. Most people now are so obsessed with how they are portrayed in social media to the point where they are not aware of who they actually are.
Truthfully I do not think Daigo is as good as he used to be, however I think people take this too much to the extreme. Everyone constantly goes on about him being washed out and stuff, but I think this video explains it pretty well. Street Fighter "Stole" his teen years. It was all Daigo did, all he focused on, and he became a god of gods. However, now he does so many other things, he has all these sponsors that he does events for, he's more sociable and not as emotionless as a lot of people remember, he is THE twitch ambassador of the world, so on, so forth. His attention isn't solely on street fighter anymore and I think that's why he isn't as good. But, that isn't necessarily a bad thing I mean, he is now doing so many other things and having a great time doing it so I think it's so harsh that some people say the things they do about him just because he isn't as dominant as he used to be in Street Fighter. P.S. I love the whole Diago vs Tokido rivalry as a whole just because Daigo really is Ryu and Tokido really is the raging demon. Watching those two fight is like seeing a real life battle between Ryu and Akuma and it's just so enjoyable.
For everyone what he is saying. He is basically saying that he is two different forms come together as a whole. Like Evil Ryu and Ryu. His other counterpart is "Umehara" also known as "The Beast" When he plays it is Umehara taking control of him. He didn't know how to explain it because he blank out everything from the outside world. When you are so good that you basically create an environment that is isolated except for this one casual man who took his love for fighting games to the next level. In a sense he is like Ryu which makes him a great match. He is tiredly searching for worthy opponents. He loves a good challenge. The other form is Umehara Daigo his normal self. Very well said and a great video.
Holy shit. Such a great attitude towards life. It's like he seeks out failure, because he wants to learn. And so many of us could improve our happiness 1000x if we adopted this positive way of thinking. Success is a road built out of failures. Rage quitters take note.
Quote from his book: "How was I able to immerse myself in gaming to the levels it took to be the best in the world? Where did my energy come from when I played? By never giving up."
No matter how many losses this man takes...his acquired wins in his lifetime can only be rivaled by Alex Valle and Justin Wong. He's a living legend. And those who say he's washed up can not and will not challenge nor defeat him in ALL of the Fighting games he has triumphed and conquered in.
I was there working at the Redbull Booth the whole weekend. Let me tell you, the whole time it felt regal being in his presence. He was training with Bonchan to warm him up for his matches. they played till 7. daigo winning 7-5. but that was a seriously intense warm up.
Some people touch your heart. They are bigger than their profession. Daigo, Khabib, Ali. Not just the best at what they do but larger than that. Larger than life. Great role models. I’m glad the video game community has someone like daigo.
Keep up the good fight, Daigo. Win or lose you inspire strength in mind even when sometimes resolve is struggle. Working hard to at least to be the best you can be.
The Bars that Daigo was spitting was hitting me hard. "If you take the path that LOOKS to be safe, that will ultimately lead to a dead end". I chose college instead of military knowing Damn Well I didn't like School work going through high school and I half-assed it. I thought college was a safer path over the military, now I feel like i'm wasting my parents money.
Honestly I think he just doesnt have the same drive anymore and why should he? He is without a shadow of a doubt a Street Fighter and Fighting Game Legend and his legacy is set in stone.
As long as Daigo decides to compete, I will be there cheering for him. He didn't earned his nickname "The Beast" by being just another average gamer. The FGC would do well to thank and respect this guy to the end of his career, for all he has done to the genre.
Very nice video. I want to thank whoever produced and helped producing it, Daigo included. It is a great thing to hear how this man thinks, I have deep respect for him and what he has accomplished, and how he has done it.
fantastic work red bull, street fighter has a rich history and cast of people and doing work like this does a lot to expose that to a wider audience, we need more of this and capcom to step their game up to match the depth of its players if we want to reach the next level
@hazwan shah Choosing the "safe" path is not 100% always the right option. It limits your options and field of view. You must be open to anything and adapt if necessary.
Daigo is the man because when I lose even a casual match, I get all bent outta shape and act like LTG. When Daigo loses a game in a HIGH risk situation, his face is STOIC. The dude is like a SF Chakravartin. Just calm, cool and collected. ALWAYS.
I think I understand what he means. As a kid when I played sports, I used to get into the zone sometimes and just phase out, it was as if a second player took over the "controller" for a few seconds and pulled off insane moves before I got the controller back. Everytime when I came back to myself after phasing out, I'd see suprised looks on people's faces before I slowly recalled what had happened. Now it doesn't happen as often, and lasts only for split seconds.
Probably one of the humblest guys ever, considering his reputation as an SF God and a celebrity in Japan. The Beast will always be associated with greatness and that insane ume shoryu.
The Melee scene on the otherhand: Brings top player on stream 240 pound muscle man farts and giggles other top player beats holds the other one down and punches his legs effectively turning them into "linguini" Got to love the Melee
He does not have anything more to prove, today it is time for the new comers to prove themselves.... Daigo is already and will always be an FGC legend, he is the beast! he inspires the fgc to be as big as they are now, we can't thanked daigo enough for what he has achieved for the fgc.
The first to ever do it!!!! He inspired me and a whole lot of gamers to go pro. Some made it to recognition, some didn't but does who didn't will go back to see this man on youtube and tell themselves: "yo i gots to do better." Thank you so much Umehara san!!! now back to street fighter 5 lol. Note: i'm not anywhere near on pro level lmao.
Amazing video, I don't care about seeing Daigo on 1st place anymore as I've already seen him so many times hitting the top charts anywhere against anyone but I'd love to see him shine again once or twice before he definetely retires (yes guys we have to face he will, eventually, one day)
The key of this whole interview...to understand why maybe he doesn't win as much...is summarized in the following quote by him: "...if you keep following the safe path, you'll end up at a dead end..." I think he's in a stage where he's just experimenting now with new things. The video ends with him walking away...he's already proved everything he needed to...notice anything familiar about that? Nick McDonald, hold this W for that brilliant ending.
Online gaming really evened the playing field. It used to be that you were only as good as your local arcade goers, or within so many miles if you made drives to special hot spots, but now you have access to the best world wide. It's crazy.
SF is the only game I ever wanted to be real good at, I got the speed & knowledge but lack the combos and patience. Watching guys like Diago is pure bliss
My only issue with this mini-documentary (which I really enjoyed and feel was quite well done!) is that I do not see Daigo Umehara as a beast. I see him as one of the most honorable and respectable parts of the FGC. Parts of this documentary are so self-honest that I wonder why Daigo is concerned about himself at all. He is leagues ahead of many of us in more than just how to play fighting games, so if his experiences have led to what he is now, then his teenage years were not wasted at all. Speaking for myself, I will always be a part of the crowd that still cheers for Daigo win or lose, because while I may not always cheer for the winners, I will always cheer for the *best*. : )
Glad I watched this. I had no idea how he actually separated himself into different persona's but I guess the clue is in his nickname.and how he nowhere bragged about his accomplishments and still considered himself a challenger with every new game released. Good stuff.
redbull should post this ages ago. the daigo at EVO has not gotten his groove yet in sfv but only 3rd quarter of the year he is at his best. he did better at capcom cup than tokido ! always a legend Daigo!
Daigo has earned his wings 1000 times over. He doesn't have to prove anything anymore. There are younger players with more to prove that will be more and more difficult to compete with as he ages. Daigo is a legend already; he loses or wins, does not matter. He is a hard solid legend. Love his Ryu everytime. You have my hail to you the Beast.
Once He retires, will people then realize how special and unique he is/was to the Fgc...
Namikaze Minato that was a joke! :P
Deyan Monterrey
sorry man was that a question? honest question. if it was,no i wasnt joking.
+Deyan Monterrey how can u hate a person that donated his prize to evo scholarship? has anyone done this other than daigo?
Are you kidding he's already the most professionally recognized gamer in the world. He's already secured his place in the history books.
D4Gamerz
don't waste ur time bro..true fgc fans know the truth.
Amazing
Ever since daigos full parry come back vs Justin Wong every serious fighting game player has been a fan xD
So "Daigo" is his base form. "Umehara" is the Super Saiyan form.
When u coming back on youtube
I wanna get some vids up this week since SFV season two is here.
Umejuarez is his illegal form.
Hahahaahhaah viva la umejuarez
you mean satsu no hado form. ;)
Lol just realized how good of an anime you could get from Daigo's life. Him training going to arcades to winning EVO's
I think they made a manga
Actually there is a manga of his teen years in SF out in Japan right now. Basically from 1994-1998 era I think. I think as of 8 months ago it has sold over 100k copies.
Yess we need a anime adaptation
Hi Score Girl is similar, but with a little bit of love story
This is still one of the most important videos in my life. Thank you so much for this

He showed me how to lose too.
Seems like a very good guy. Calm, astute.
mag917 yes yes! Exactly!
He will always be known as the beast. Evo moment 37 was the start of the FGC being taken to a serious level in the West. The stars aligned, and Daigo has stayed stoic and humble
Nice comment :)🤣👍

He is still as good but there's a lot more good rivals thhan there used to be.
Victor Creed That's also a fair assessment.
Beautiful post Marpolo, agree every line
MARPOLO13 Akuma will be coming out
D i z z y yeah I know. I should switch that to not in SFV yet* lol.

King Jong Un 1300 i think thats BS, who isnt like that?
STFU Tyler youre no beast. Youre just a fly
Dj_Ezhel and u just another loverboy lmao. U wanna marry him yeah omg pmsl goodbye loosers
Tyler N learn how to spell when you try to insult someone online idiot
Tyler N dang you hella gay.
Truly a humble person, I wish i know how to speak and listen Japanese language fluently. So I can kick it with him for awhile
Regardless Daigo loses at any tournament , he is still the best.

I'm so glad that the fighting game community has somebody like Daigo. What an inspiration.
nice editing
I was just going to mention that lol. I'm glad whoever did it is being appreciated :p
Yeah, does Daigo justice
it was the same guy who shot and directed this micro doc, agreed was good.
No matter how many losses this man takes...his acquired wins in his lifetime can only be rivaled by Alex Valle and Justin Wong.
He's a living legend.

This is a beautiful tribute to this brave warrior. Long live to Daigo!
The Bars that Daigo was spitting was hitting me hard. "If you take the path that LOOKS to be safe, that will ultimately lead to a dead end". I chose college instead of military knowing Damn Well I didn't like School work going through high school and I half-assed it. Lamar Cockrell keep your head up. Once you make it, give back to your parents. You got this!
I never get tired of watching this... Seriously, gamer or not, this man should be a hero and role model to you
Daigo is Daigo. Without him and his parry, things wont be the same. Players come and go, but legends stay.
Here again after his qualification to Capcom Cup 2020! What a legend... This is my favorite video on the internet.
I want Daigo to win next year's EVO 😭😭
1:47 The caption says 'it was so lively' but actually Daigo is saying 'It was so revolutionary at the time'
'ウメハラ'は自分とは違う存在としてあるってすごい感覚だなあ
もうある意味で悟りを開いてると言えるよね
すごいな
とにかくすごい
and people say daigo is washed up dude is a living legend and i bet none of you could aspire to be as great as he is to the fgc.
Honestly I think he just doesnt have the same drive anymore and why should he? He is without a shadow of a doubt a Street Fighter and Fighting Game Legend and his legacy is set in stone.
The Legend himself, one of the most humble and down to earth person i've ever seen. He doesnt need to prove anything to anyone.
his humility is beautiful
Diago is still the best, even if he loses. He has done things no one else has.
As long as Daigo decides to compete, I will be there cheering for him.
He didn't earned his nickname "The Beast" by being just another average gamer.
The FGC would do well to thank and respect this guy to the end of his career, for all he has done to the genre.
First class video. Really well put together, great insights into one of the greatest ever to play the game. Please do more!
Our Lord and saviour has spoken!
effortlessly inspiring
Spork simple and true.
until ur mom comes in and shuts down the computer.
Kal Kuma Hahaha "your mom" Hahaha what's the matter champ? You sound upset? Wanna talk about it?
Do you wan a hug or some warm milk?
Some of the quotes he says, I can live by it!
Dude is talking about id, ego and superego. Stunning. One of the wisest and most inspirational video gamers I’ve seen in my lifetime.
I love this dude. A fucking inspiration, regardless of the field you strive to excel in.
Take notes, kids.
Very nice video. I want to thank whoever produced and helped producing it, Daigo included. It is a great thing to hear how this man thinks, I have deep respect for him and what he has accomplished, and how he has done it.
Most underrated video on TH-cam, you don’t even have to care about video games to enjoy this video
Man I could listen to this guy talk all day
God damn. Who does the editing on this man? This is artwork! Thanks for the fantastic video!
someone that most of us can relate to. I'm proud of him though, he came a long way with hard work and dedication. I'm proud of you, Umehara.
This is truly inspiring, not just for gaming but for life as well!
The real-life Ryu - honest, humble, and always looking to strive higher
Such a well done video kudos to the creators and thank you for the insight into the legend himself . Love him or hate him he will always be amazing
Tokido vs Daigo is my favorite match ups. Both players has so much skills!
The Best very Best
Only Daigo can make a video of himself losing sound and feel triumphant. He's THAT beast.
im a big fan of games, and now here comes Daigo Umehara.
I haven't finished watching, but from 7:00 onwards, dear Red Bull eSports...
Hold this W.
Editing on point, great video and an absolute legend!
Video saved. Excellent video on Daigo. I hope he unlocks his true potential in SV5.
Mogi-san E Most likely not USF4 for life!!!
6:26 excellent transition sound effect
fantastic work red bull, street fighter has a rich history and cast of people and doing work like this does a lot to expose that to a wider audience, we need more of this and capcom to step their game up to match the depth of its players if we want to reach the next level
"But if you keep choosing the path that look safe, ultimately that becomes a dead end."
Deep,...Umehara
@hazwan shah Choosing the "safe" path is not 100% always the right option. It limits your options and field of view. You must be open to anything and adapt if necessary.
“I don’t think there are many people with as many failures under their belt as me.”
This man.
Daigo is the man because when I lose even a casual match, I get all bent outta shape and act like LTG. When Daigo loses a game in a HIGH risk situation, his face is STOIC. The dude is like a SF Chakravartin. Just calm, cool and collected. ALWAYS.
It seems like Daigo might have th he Millennium Puzzle in his possession haha. It's the only explanation for his transformation to Umehara
+McKipper Yeah, man. I was getting those Yugi boy vibes haha
John Perez you win 😂😂
I think I understand what he means. As a kid when I played sports, I used to get into the zone sometimes and just phase out, it was as if a second player took over the "controller" for a few seconds and pulled off insane moves before I got the controller back. Everytime when I came back to myself after phasing out, I'd see suprised looks on people's faces before I slowly recalled what had happened. Now it doesn't happen as often, and lasts only for split seconds.
NoisyBarrels yup , that second where everything paused
Probably one of the humblest guys ever, considering his reputation as an SF God and a celebrity in Japan. The Beast will always be associated with greatness and that insane ume shoryu.
Love Daigo. He is a legend.
Masterful video about a genius
The Melee scene on the otherhand:
Brings top player on stream
240 pound muscle man farts and giggles
other top player beats holds the other one down and punches his legs
effectively turning them into "linguini"
Got to love the Melee
what was the last incident you spoke of?
Joesenfrozen Linguini?"
???????????????????
Mango and Alex beating up m2k LOL
I just saw that shit and wtf that was gay as fuck
this applies to all aspects in life, very nicely done.
when daigo stars sayin dat everything he did in his life besides fg was failure...failure, the feels got me hard
It's the people who see the glass as half-empty and not half-full that get shit done.
You have some weird fetishes...
That Juri icon got me hard. X3
What's fg
spiritfired Fighting games.
the editing at 2:06 is so good holy shit
"But if you keep choosing the path that looks safe, ultimately that becomes a dead end" ~ words to live by right there
Praise Be
Amazing video, I don't care about seeing Daigo on 1st place anymore as I've already seen him so many times hitting the top charts anywhere against anyone but I'd love to see him shine again once or twice before he definetely retires (yes guys we have to face he will, eventually, one day)
I love the content you make Red Bull!
I want those ending quotes collaborated into a poster or something.
Daigo has one of the most relaxing voices of a japanese i ever heard ^^
The key of this whole interview...to understand why maybe he doesn't win as much...is summarized in the following quote by him: "...if you keep following the safe path, you'll end up at a dead end..." I think he's in a stage where he's just experimenting now with new things. The video ends with him walking away...he's already proved everything he needed to...notice anything familiar about that?
Nick McDonald, hold this W for that brilliant ending.
Not only is this man incredibly talented and intelligent, he is SO FINE
Daigo is like StarCraft 's Jaedong. Both maybe over their prime, but still universally loved
The one true god of fighting games.
I play melee competitively and l admire how you guys dump older street fighter games for the latest ones even if they're considered worse.
Umehara is the legend
Fantastic documentary!!
The swag and wisdom combined
Online gaming really evened the playing field. It used to be that you were only as good as your local arcade goers, or within so many miles if you made drives to special hot spots, but now you have access to the best world wide. It's crazy.
bakanemon daigo sama always remember for life. the ken comeback was god blessed.
Man in the Street Fighter Hall of Fame, nice video.
04:10 when the aura of shin diago enters the room. Everyone knows it. Respect.
Holy Rly rly rly rly good editing pls more vids like that
Challenge yourself, don't take the easy way out. To succeed in almost anything you have to take a few Ls, the GOAT of Street Fighter Period!
SF is the only game I ever wanted to be real good at, I got the speed & knowledge but lack the combos and patience. Watching guys like Diago is pure bliss
His advice is what makes him the beast.
shoutouts to Nick McDonald for the crazy editing
Umehara a lenda viva .
E ainda é humilde
My teens were taken away by fighting games, that is the most heartbreaking thing i ever heard in my 39 years
You is the best, Daigo Ryumehara! arigato!
4:23 The feels. I can relate to this super hard.
