Yep, we already did a full review of the new Subaru Ascent! And a lot of you requested the diagonal test! But here in Québec winter was so fast that it's full of snow everywhere already! So a few pointers before you judge: 1- That Subaru Ascent is equipped with non-studded Toyo OBSERVE GSI-5 winter tires. We could equip it in time with Nokian's Studded tires but that's gonna be for another time! 2- This is NOT a 50/50 AWD system, it's Active Torque Split AWD! This system employs a multi-plate transfer clutch that maintains a 60/40 front/rear torque split and uses a range of sensors to automatically adjust this split on-the-fly as conditions warrant, creating more predictable handling. The Active Torque Split AWD places the focus on ease of operation, fuel efficiency, and reliability. 3-- It never gave up, a lot of AWD system will give up after 30 secs to 5 min of testing. This one hold on like the Millenium Falcon over time! 4- X-mode définition: X-MODE controls the engine output, transmission, AWD torque split and braking system to help tackle the trickiest of conditions and bring even more rugged capability into sharp focus 5- Snow condition: You can't see it, but it was slippery as hell! Black ice under 3-10 cm of fluffy light snow and ultracold temperature! Our cameraman froze its fingers in a few minutes outside. 6- That hill: More than 6' hight at the top, big banking that can send a car rolling! So getting sideways in it is not a good idea! 7- Break-Over angle, with so much ice, physics send the Ascent sideways and we don't want to have the top of the hill in that middle point where we would get stuck! We don't like to call for help with a Subaru! 8- In 2019, we will do a regular diagonal test on a tarmac to be fair, expect similar performance to the Subaru Outback! Norm T it’s about traction. Any vehicle with AWD or 4x4 will slip if there isn’t any grip. There were several spots in the video that showed the tires turned. Having selective opinion is not fact.

Ever own a 4Runner? I'd be interested in your opinion between that and the Subaru. I'm looking at Ascents for better MPG, but seeing this one in the snow makes it hard to switch vehicles... I rarely have to deal with snow, so maybe that shouldn't be the deal breaker, but reliable off-road and winter capabilities are nice to have when you need them
My 4runner seems to outshine this performance-wise, but I need better MPG.... I'm torn as to what vehicles offer comparable performance to the 4runner while significantly improving my fuel economy
You mention that the system didnt give up. I actually experienced this last winter in Manitoba with my 18 Kia Sorento. After being stuck for like 5 minutes in deep snow, the awd system quite literally shit the bed and I was left with a fwd car only. So pissed.
Norm T and the cx5 is nearly $8k more than the Forester. I have a ‘19 premium and I’m content in the engine...but I do with they put the new ascent engine in the Forester.
Definitely is a keeper. Makes my Top Five List. I can easily name some brand new 1/2 Ton 4x4 trucks that couldn’t do that same diagonal in those conditions.

it it the same thing, without the symmetrical power distribution, but Pilot is a $50k vehicle. but yes, pilot too will send up to 100% of power to the wheel that has grip.
@@jonathans4503 From what I've heard, no. I would recommend the toyo g3-ice. I've strapped them on my RAV4 and it drives like a tank! :D Plus they are studdable, if I ever have to use it as such. :)
hows the paint holding up??! here’s my gripe on a 2.5 month old car w/3k and Subaru not jumping at the chance to keep a repeat customer happy - possible quality control slipping ??? Bad paint on my front bumper!!! started coming off from a bad original paint’g from factory- car is just a bit over 2 months still waiting to hear back from Subaru as to if they will honor & fix this bad paint job!!??? 5th time my new car will be in the shop !! other stuff that had to be taken care of: bad front speaker when getting ready to pick up my newly purchased vehicle, 2x bluetooth issues and background noise, and passenger side molding at dash and roof between front windshield & side window was just hanging loose and away from its placement ??? have no idea why that jiggled free?? So far, pretty disappointed !! my husbands Outback has been wonderful So sad .... possibly the Ascent is in high demand and quality control slipping Subaru??!

Always appreciated the diagonal test! Don't mean to put you on the spot but if you were to choose between Outback, Forester and Ascent, which one would you pick and why?
In my opinion it just depends on if you need that third row or the more powerful engine and space of the ascent. The outstanding awd are the same on all three models. I own the outback because I prefer the wagon-like design and I think it's the most visually attractive of the three.
Actually, it's because I'm about to hit ( and ear the snow ) the underbody right at the middle point of the Subaru Ascent. So if I jack it I will get stuck :P It's just to make sure that everybody understands why we back or why we are careful :P
All season tires, wow! Such good performance, it is indeed impressive. Years ago my Xterra with studded tires might do slightly better, but absolutely not much better.

I was never a fan of the Subaru's Active Torque Split AWD system that splits 60/40- F/R, I'd prefer the Viscous coupling and 50/50. But they don't use that any more, :( still, this system performs excellent. Wonder does it shift power beyond 60/40 or is it always in that ratio???
It's a continuously variable torque split. I think Subaru puts a ratio on it because people seem to like that. If you ever see the signal from the solenoid that controls the transfer clutch, you will see it is never the same.

It can't do more than 40% to the rear. This is to protect the transmission as well. Calling it variable just means that it can modulate power with traction control and braking individual wheels side to side and front to back.
niuhuskieguy no it can't. None of the Subaru's can except for the WRX and STI. It's not needed anyway since X-Mode can modulate enough to get you out of a low traction situation.
Another good stuff about Subaru's SUV instead of snowmobile : - Second only to Volvo in safety. - Stable at high speed and cornering. - Easy DIY for service. The oil filter is top mounted. With a Fumoto valve and little hose to drain the oil, changing oil is as easy and as clean as changing windshield wipers. If you drive a Subaru SUV and you don't change oil DIY, you are a girl.
this is whack! the AWD system now is just like the others. is it the traction-on setting that is making that happen? good times had it such that All Wheels actually Drive but now it's "let's send power to the wheel that needs it". not a bad machine though. i remain loyal to fuji always.
Watch 2:50 on with the steering wheel position on these Subaru tests. When the steering wheel is turn the Subaru stops movement. Which sucks when having to pull out of a drive way in the snow and into traffic. The Asymmetrical only works when steering wheel is straight ahead. The new electronic system are superior.
I was always a Subaru fan but when I did my research I found the CVT and boxer engine is a hit or miss so I went with the Ford Explorer 3.5 V6 non EcoBoost just for reliability technology

It would be much better than Suabru if SH-AWD wasn't limited to 70% front or rearward.
Pilot doesn't have SH AWD it has iVTM4 which uses similar hardware... however VTM struggles on torque vectoring during corners.

The AWD system works well / effectively but it's still a little slow to react / xfer power in some cases.

Go for GM Twin Clutch that works with with any steering angle. Notice at 2:50 the Subaru systems only work with front wheels straight.
