I am somewhat surprised that Doug never mentions the fact that Esmeralda's song God Help The Outcasts marks the first and so far only time a female lead in Disney has sang about the needs of someone other than herself. She is not singing about what she wants or desires, she is singing about the suffering of her people and how she prays for someone to care about those who had it much worse than she did.

I honestly believe Frollo is the most scariest villain in Disney history because he is realistic. As a kid you don't like him because he's mean and he puts down quasi when we know Quasi is a kind person on the outside. But as adults we are actually terrified of him because people like him exist. We know people who take religion to the extreme and commit horrible things because they let their warped version of the religion blind them to the truth. Frollo is equivalent to something of a cult leader to me. He becomes extreme and unhinged and yet he still believes that he commits his crimes in the word of the lord. Thats honestly why he scares me. As a kid I saw him to something of a bully but as an adult I'm scared of him knowing that people like him exist and has the ability to hurt me and other people.

I'm not a huge fan of Disney remaking all their animated movies as live action, but if they were to do it with this one, and actually go all the way and make it more like the book, take out the gargoyles but also leave in the good songs, get some really good actors with great singing voices in on it, I would totally love to see that.
HoopsAndDinoMan ehh the issue would be if they wanted to make it even closer to the book, they would need to make frollo a priest, add gringoire (who's pretty cool but Phoebus already kinda seems to have parts of his personality, so maybe they wouldn't need him) and Gudule, Esmeralda' mother. This would make the movie even longer, because Hugo loved making his novels long in order to better explain characters and the plot. Other than that, yeah I could see this being a pretty cool live action movie. It would be dark as heck though.
There's a stage musical version that's phenomenal. The gargoyles are firmly established as figments of Quasi's imagination and there's no comedy in them. The darker elements of the story are amped up and there's some killer new songs. They should make a film version of that!
Personally the Hunchback movie makes me kinda sad, because it reminds me of how awesome adult-focused animated movies would be, and how amazing this movie could've been if it was actually written for an adult audience. I want more of that.
I kind of hope they remake this as a pg13 version. I know they wont, but with all the unnecessary remakes of perfectly good movies they're doing, why not?
+Sammyyaam Pirates of the Caribbean is pg-13 and it's Disney so it's definitely a possible rating for a HboND live remake. Strangely enough I was 6 when I watched this movie and had no nightmares about it lol
+Troels Jessen they just recently made a disney's hunchback broadway musical which is a lot darker than the movie but still keeps the main songs. i think you should definitely check it out, its fantastic

You know, you might be right. The only comparable one I can think of is The Lion King. Although I think I'd have to rewatch Bambi and Dumbo before I committed to that stance. And I'm going to already go out and say that "Little April Shower" in Bambi is my favorite choral piece in all of Disney, Hunchback of notre dame included.
Yes. Not my favourite soundtrack (that goes to Bedknobs and Broomsticks and The Lion King). But Hunchback has the best soundtrack and score of any Disney movie, it’s phenomenal. I listen to the soundtrack more than I listen to my favourites, because of how good it is😂.
For how awesome Frollo is in the movie, he's better in the book because he isn't a villain, he's this fallen hero that you always simply just pity. He just feels like this dog backed into a corner, with his head down as he growls the way he's told. It's gorgeously complex. Victor Hugo is a phenomenal writer. Anyone who loves this movie should read the book.
Well I don't hate the gargoyles as much as some people do but I have a theory for why they were included. When they wrote the script, the higher ups thought it was too dark and they needed to squeeze in something lighter to balance it and therefore the Gargoyles were included. It is clever that two of them were named after the guy who wrote the original book.
Well we learn Quasimodo's inner thoughts, desires and emotional conflicts via his conversation with the gargoyles. If we didn't have that he would have to sing them in a musical form and that would be too much singing in one film.

I never read it but from I gathered it is really dark and depressing,but this movie did something new with it. The same way I never read the original manga but I really love the original Fullmetal Alchemist because it did something more creative and new with it and it turned out something amazing.

Meh. Walt Disney said if you aim only for kids, you're dead in the water--and that adults are just kids grown up anyway. Most of the complex / racy stuff is presented so beautifully that it usually goes over kids' heads. I'm always amazed to re-watch some movies I loved as a kid and then am amazed to see how much depth and plot I can understand now as an adult (and how much vocabulary I know now. Yes). That's the reason Disney is considered so timeless, I think.

I think the biggest change is turning the book's asshole Phoebus into a fun and likeable guy, but he works. I never understood what book!Esmeralda sees in him. Though I wish they made an adaptation that doesn't make Frollo ten times more evil than he actually is - yes, he's fascinating and he has the best villain song ever, but book!Frollo is far more complex. He's the actual main character, and his arc shows him going from a genuinely good man (who took in Quasi our of mercy and certainly didn't go around murdering people) to losing his mind because of his forbidden feelings.

Hm... I don't know, pikaplup2, a retelling from Esmeralda's point of view would definitely not dwelve on Frollo being complex, if anything, it would require him to be even more blatantly evil. Just hope she doesn't become a complete Mary Sue. On Disney's version, she's at least have something about her personality that sounds more... I don't know, realist than in the book. Hugo's Esmeralda is just SO superficial and naïve that I couldn't believe she could ever reach adulthood amongst thieves and traveling everywhere around while still being a maiden (a major point of her "arc").
I always thought Frollo's evilness was more accurate to history, at least for villainy. When you recall some of the absolutely HORRIFYING things the Catholic Church endorsed back in the day, from the purging of the Templars to the genocide of the Cathars ("Kill them all; God will know his own" ring a bell?), not to mention the racism towards Jews and Gypsies throughout Europe, you realize Frollo is spot-on. People like him really existed, they held positions of power in Europe, and they got away with some truly despicable stuff in the name of God.
This is hands down my favorite movie The colors, the animation, The story. And that music... OH MY WORD THAT MUSIC. The music is so powerful! It describes the feelings of the characters and gives the exposition in such a powerful way without jamming it down your throat! Love it
The first time I watched this movie was just this year, when I'm fairly grown up. On the one hand, I'm kind of disappointed with myself that it took me so long to watch it, but on the other hand when I finally did watch, I was able to fully appreciate it with a critical mind that loves France and loves History, without having any wear from watching it too much. Ever since I first watched this movie, I've watched it again dozens of times, not to mentioned listened to "The Bells of Notre Dame" and "Hellfire" countless times on TH-cam, along with the respective French versions "Les Cloches de Notre Dame" and "Infernal"
if you liked the French version, I would advise you to watch the Italian version. The Frollo dubbing is as good, if not better, than the French one (where Frollo is a bit underwhelming, especially in the speaking part), and the rest of the movie holds up very well.
As a lifelong fan of Disney's animated films, I do honestly believe this is their finest work. It may not be as solidly built as Beauty and the Beast or as epic as The Lion King, true, but I think it goes to places no other Disney film dared to go. When it stumbles it always manages to pick itself up with some beautiful theming or haunting imagery. Hellfire is the obvious standout, but everything about the score really slams home the richness of the plot and its characters. Doesn't make the Gargoyles good, but I put up with crappy comic relief in all these films, I'm not about to beat Hunchback up for it.
That's why I hated the sequel - because it took the lesson of "Just being nice doesn't mean that a woman will be attracted to you" and threw it out the window.
Im actually glad this and Pocahontas came out back to back, they seem to fit so perfectly, yes they are forced, but they have this direct level of maturity I don't see in many Disney films.
Hannah Papernick-Yudin if Pocahontas has been historically correct, it wouldn't be a disney film. I think the reality of what happened back then would be too dark for kids.
Hannah Papernick-Yudin I don’t think it was meant to be a representation of her life but more based of the legend like how Annie Oakley was a real person and they are fictional stories about her. What they could have done was still keep the plot and everything but maybe name the character something else and have her be a Native American princess INSPIRED by Pocahontas.
This and the Lion King were the first ever Disney films that I watched. They'll always have a special place in my heart. And although I tend to cut them a lot of slack, I really appreciate an honest review. Great job!
Esmeralda's 'God help the outcasts' is to this day still my favorite Disney song. There are a LOT of songs that I really like, but this one has something powerful, something special that was never done again.
It's dark for a disney movie but i wouldn't say it's inappropriate for kids. You still get some light-hearted moments and a good message in the end. I think kids should be able to handle some darker scenes as long as they're not way too graphic.
I have such a bigger appreciation for this story now that I've read the book and have really come to understand it's cultural significance. You're absolutely right, Doug. This film was one of the biggest risks Disney ever took. Normally with a film geared towards children, the story content is simple to understand while the humour is mostly meant for adults to keep them entertained. But with Hunchback, it's the opposite. The main premises of the story are surprisingly deep and complex while the jokes are mostly intended for kids, which I think is why so many people have problems with the Gargoyles but I digress. This is actually my favourite Disney film, by far and beyond simply for what a powerful, dark and epic story it is. The animation is almost flawless and the soundtrack is honestly TOO good for a Disney flick. I'm happy to see more and more people coming forth and saying that they enjoy this under appreciated gem. I know I'm in the minority when I say this, but I think if done well, this story has the potential to be a GREAT live action remake.

I FREAKING LOVE THIS MOVIE! It would be my absolutely FAVORITE Disney movie if the "Guy Like You" song had never existed, that song knocked it from first to it being tied for second. I was nannying this summer and I had this soundtrack playing, except the song that we shall not name again, and the kids thought it was cool so they asked if we could watch it. I warned them that Frollo is kinda scary, 2 of the kids are 7 year old twins, and they insisted on watching it and they LOVED IT. They went around singing the songs afterward. Aside from the one terrible song the soundtrack is AMAZING, especially the intro, outro, Hellfire, and the score in general. I love Alan Menken. The big choirs... gah! Chills! Love it!

I'm a huge fan of the book from Victor Hugo, but I also love this movie so much. Like Doug said, if you just get past the fact it's Disney's adaptation, most people will know what to expect from it. I'm often very picky when it comes to movies adapted from books, but I think I can let this movie slide, because even the Lon Chaney movie wasn't accurate to the book (although it's a lot closer to it than this movie) and this movie has great actors, animation, songs etc. Also, it's pretty mature for a Disney movie, with the religious motifs and Frollo lusting over Esmeralda, so I'll always give this movie props...

When I was a kid I really didnt like this film, It was really scary, big ethereal choirs terrified me,Frolo was scary as fuck, the fire pouring from Notre Dame as a child was horrifying to look at it was like I was looking at Hell and Hell terrified me as a kid but years later I love this film, I just dont think ill let my kids see it until they are 11 maybe its too dark for little kids
Ciaran McGuinness Man it depends on your kids because i saw it when i was four or five and i loved it because i felt something different in it and i always loved to watch a disney movie just to see the beautiful animation ( Don't count that stupid sequels!) So if your kid is going to be as weird as me, turn it on they might love it or cry rivers
I was obsessed with this movie ever since I was like 3 years old. The only part I found scary that I would run out of the room for was when Quasimodo was tied down and bullied at the festival. I didn't actually watch that scene in full until I was at least 11.
This has GOT to be one of my favorite Disney Movies! The characters, the animation, the scenery, the MUSIC!? Love hoe dark it is, I love the story and all the themes in it! And Frollo has got to be one of the best Disney villain EVER.(besides Scar)

Esmeralda will always be one of my favorite Disney female characters besides the princesses. She fights better than a man, knows when things are really wrong, is very generous, sweet and selfless! Plus she’s a POC with the most beautiful emerald eyes! 😍

I've went from hating this movie as a kid because none of it made sense to me to now absolutely loving it as an adult. This is definitely up there for me for my favorite Disney movies.
You know what makes me mad? The fact that the stage musical didn’t make it to Broadway. It’s going right alongside the movie: in the grossly underrated category. The story is more book accurate and it has tons more songs that were also written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.
Boba Fett I believe the reason that Hunchback didn’t go to Broadway was the cost. It was too expensive to pay both the actors and the choir (as well as all the other usual expenses) and they weren’t willing to cut the choir because they felt that harmed the production so that it didn’t have the full effect, which I would agree with. It’s unfortunate, but at least we have the cast recording to listen to! And now, local theatres are able to acquire the rights to put it on. There was a production recently I think by 5th Avenue Theatre that did a production with a deaf actor playing Quasimodo. From the clips, it looked AMAZING! I wish they’d filmed it on the stage to release in movie theaters or something like they’ve been doing recently, because I would love a professional Hunchback video-especially of that production!
The choir in this film always made my hair stand on end. The way it builds and swells, making every scene that it's in feel so important. God, it's so good.
When I first watched it as a kid, I never got far into it. Maybe it was because of the main hero's looks, the dark undertones, the creepy awesomeness that is Frollo....then I gave ti another go as an adult. I freaking love it!

I completely agree on the choir thing. The choir makes the whole movie seem bigger than it is, and really sets the tone for the story. The soundtrack works wonders for this movie, and I'm absolutely in love with it.
"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is arguably one of my favorite Disney animated films of all time and it's at the top 5. I like how Doug stated his own reason that how this film cannot reach to the highest point as much like other Disney classic films. It's pretty low for this film because non of these audiences didn't even care about this movie. What's interesting to me is that this film released in Summer 1996 while other summer blockbuster films weren't that spectacular like Doug said about "Dark Ages of Summer Movies" while he pointed out that "Independence Day," "Twister," "The Phantom," "KaZaam," "Jack," and other 96 films weren't that good because they are stupid and crappy. When I saw this movie in my VHS, this movie blew me away and it's probably the best summer film that why people didn't get the popularity. Then the film becomes dark and it didn't turn into a Disney film, but this one is actually turned into a underrated flick and it grew me that it has memorable scenes...
, fantastic art work of taking place in old age of Paris, and the songs were stronger that it keeps my attention to hear it and that choir and that Hellfire song is awesome. It's actually a film that turns only for adults and not towards to children because of the setup, the lust of sexuality, and the dark adaptation that children won't find it interesting. At least people who grew up watching this movie even today, they make the popularity so strong. I would say that this is best performance by Tom Hulce and Tony Jay for playing good roles in a Disney film. And how can't you not like Quasimodo's singing voice that it's hard to come up and turn into a passionate singer that it's nice to hear Tom Hulce's voice and the animation looks gorgeous including the climax at the end is one of my favorite moments. Enjoy this movie and this time I will get this one on Blu-Ray because it will be part of my favorite collection. Who knows? Thanks to Doug who has good points about the movie.
I remember seeing this in theaters when it first came out. I was 15 at the time. It was amazing! The opening music was seriously epic in theater sound. I still love this movie. My favorite character is Clopin. He's just a trip.

I always thought the Gargoyles were imaginary, and when they fought it was just simply Debris falling from the Tower. And they showed the gargoyles throwing stuff off was just Quassimoto seeing debris falling and just reassuring himself that he might not be alone.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is my favorite book and even still I absolutely adore this movie. It's my favorite Disney movie, I love it even more than I do The Lion King.
That is a reverse harem. I got really confused about it when I was little. When I grew up I understood. The sequal clarifies things by having Esmerelda with Pheobus as a married couple. They even have a son.

+Roberta Tallienne Yeah the Little Mermaid is a very tragic tale but that is aslo the reason I like it. It has the moral of "sometimes you can't get everything you want." I think it a good lesson to give to young children even with the story having a bitter sweet ending.
Ohhh my god, one of the things I love the most about this movie is the fucking music, it’s gorgeous, dramatic, enormous.... everytime I hear the song about the bells of Norte dame I got goosebumps... definitely one of my favorite movies.
I watched the live action film the day before the Carhedral caught fire. My then-boyfriend and I saw it together and he texted me the next day with the news.
I never caught onto Frolo lusting after Esmeralda. I just thought he was trying to creep her out. Now I'm older, I'm just like... it's basically telling viewers (discreetly) that there are people who are creepy and lustful. Disney just taught me, if people are jerks, they'll either kill you or make you miserable
My favorite memory of this movie was the laugh I got seeing t played on Disney Jr, not altered at all. It was surreal watching Hellfire with the Disney Jr logo in the corner.

There's a stage musical version that's phenomenal. The gargoyles are firmly established as figments of Quasi's imagination and there's no comedy in them. The darker elements of the story are amped up and there's some killer new songs. They should make a film version of that!

Personally the Hunchback movie makes me kinda sad, because it reminds me of how awesome adult-focused animated movies would be, and how amazing this movie could've been if it was actually written for an adult audience. I want more of that.

Yes. Not my favourite soundtrack (that goes to Bedknobs and Broomsticks and The Lion King). But Hunchback has the best soundtrack and score of any Disney movie, it’s phenomenal. I listen to the soundtrack more than I listen to my favourites, because of how good it is😂.
For how awesome Frollo is in the movie, he's better in the book because he isn't a villain, he's this fallen hero that you always simply just pity. He just feels like this dog backed into a corner, with his head down as he growls the way he's told. It's gorgeously complex. Victor Hugo is a phenomenal writer. Anyone who loves this movie should read the book.

Well I don't hate the gargoyles as much as some people do but I have a theory for why they were included. When they wrote the script, the higher ups thought it was too dark and they needed to squeeze in something lighter to balance it and therefore the Gargoyles were included. It is clever that two of them were named after the guy who wrote the original book.
Well we learn Quasimodo's inner thoughts, desires and emotional conflicts via his conversation with the gargoyles. If we didn't have that he would have to sing them in a musical form and that would be too much singing in one film.

Meh. Walt Disney said if you aim only for kids, you're dead in the water--and that adults are just kids grown up anyway. Most of the complex / racy stuff is presented so beautifully that it usually goes over kids' heads. I'm always amazed to re-watch some movies I loved as a kid and then am amazed to see how much depth and plot I can understand now as an adult (and how much vocabulary I know now. Yes). That's the reason Disney is considered so timeless, I think.

Maybe the dubbed versions count, but Disney is not one person. It's a community. You have you're head groups and then there are the underlings the head groups throw the keys, when they're not working and say "go crazy.
I think the biggest change is turning the book's asshole Phoebus into a fun and likeable guy, but he works. I never understood what book!Esmeralda sees in him.
Though I wish they made an adaptation that doesn't make Frollo ten times more evil than he actually is - yes, he's fascinating and he has the best villain song ever, but book!Frollo is far more complex. He's the actual main character, and his arc shows him going from a genuinely good man (who took in Quasi our of mercy and certainly didn't go around murdering people) to losing his mind because of his forbidden feelings.

Hm... I don't know, pikaplup2, a retelling from Esmeralda's point of view would definitely not dwelve on Frollo being complex, if anything, it would require him to be even more blatantly evil. Just hope she doesn't become a complete Mary Sue. On Disney's version, she's at least have something about her personality that sounds more... I don't know, realist than in the book. Hugo's Esmeralda is just SO superficial and naïve that I couldn't believe she could ever reach adulthood amongst thieves and traveling everywhere around while still being a maiden (a major point of her "arc").
I always thought Frollo's evilness was more accurate to history, at least for villainy. When you recall some of the absolutely HORRIFYING things the Catholic Church endorsed back in the day, from the purging of the Templars to the genocide of the Cathars ("Kill them all; God will know his own" ring a bell?), not to mention the racism towards Jews and Gypsies throughout Europe, you realize Frollo is spot-on. People like him really existed, they held positions of power in Europe, and they got away with some truly despicable stuff in the name of God.
This is hands down my favorite movie The colors, the animation, The story. And that music... OH MY WORD THAT MUSIC. The music is so powerful! It describes the feelings of the characters and gives the exposition in such a powerful way without jamming it down your throat! Love it

The first time I watched this movie was just this year, when I'm fairly grown up. On the one hand, I'm kind of disappointed with myself that it took me so long to watch it, but on the other hand when I finally did watch, I was able to fully appreciate it with a critical mind that loves France and loves History, without having any wear from watching it too much.
Ever since I first watched this movie, I've watched it again dozens of times, not to mentioned listened to "The Bells of Notre Dame" and "Hellfire" countless times on TH-cam, along with the respective French versions "Les Cloches de Notre Dame" and "Infernal"
if you liked the French version, I would advise you to watch the Italian version. The Frollo dubbing is as good, if not better, than the French one (where Frollo is a bit underwhelming, especially in the speaking part), and the rest of the movie holds up very well.

Aside from the obvious tone problem, this is a gorgeous, majestic movie.
As a lifelong fan of Disney's animated films, I do honestly believe this is their finest work. It may not be as solidly built as Beauty and the Beast or as epic as The Lion King, true, but I think it goes to places no other Disney film dared to go. When it stumbles it always manages to pick itself up with some beautiful theming or haunting imagery. Hellfire is the obvious standout, but everything about the score really slams home the richness of the plot and its characters.
Doesn't make the Gargoyles good, but I put up with crappy comic relief in all these films, I'm not about to beat Hunchback up for it.
That's why I hated the sequel - because it took the lesson of "Just being nice doesn't mean that a woman will be attracted to you" and threw it out the window.
Im actually glad this and Pocahontas came out back to back, they seem to fit so perfectly, yes they are forced, but they have this direct level of maturity I don't see in many Disney films.

Hannah Papernick-Yudin I don’t think it was meant to be a representation of her life but more based of the legend like how Annie Oakley was a real person and they are fictional stories about her. What they could have done was still keep the plot and everything but maybe name the character something else and have her be a Native American princess INSPIRED by Pocahontas.
This and the Lion King were the first ever Disney films that I watched. They'll always have a special place in my heart. And although I tend to cut them a lot of slack, I really appreciate an honest review. Great job!

It's dark for a disney movie but i wouldn't say it's inappropriate for kids. You still get some light-hearted moments and a good message in the end. I think kids should be able to handle some darker scenes as long as they're not way too graphic.
I have such a bigger appreciation for this story now that I've read the book and have really come to understand it's cultural significance. You're absolutely right, Doug. This film was one of the biggest risks Disney ever took. Normally with a film geared towards children, the story content is simple to understand while the humour is mostly meant for adults to keep them entertained. But with Hunchback, it's the opposite. The main premises of the story are surprisingly deep and complex while the jokes are mostly intended for kids, which I think is why so many people have problems with the Gargoyles but I digress. This is actually my favourite Disney film, by far and beyond simply for what a powerful, dark and epic story it is. The animation is almost flawless and the soundtrack is honestly TOO good for a Disney flick. I'm happy to see more and more people coming forth and saying that they enjoy this under appreciated gem. I know I'm in the minority when I say this, but I think if done well, this story has the potential to be a GREAT live action remake.

The Hunchback of the Notre Dame has become of my favorite Disney movie. The music is amazing and I love Esmeralda.
I FREAKING LOVE THIS MOVIE! It would be my absolutely FAVORITE Disney movie if the "Guy Like You" song had never existed, that song knocked it from first to it being tied for second.
I was nannying this summer and I had this soundtrack playing, except the song that we shall not name again, and the kids thought it was cool so they asked if we could watch it. I warned them that Frollo is kinda scary, 2 of the kids are 7 year old twins, and they insisted on watching it and they LOVED IT. They went around singing the songs afterward.
Aside from the one terrible song the soundtrack is AMAZING, especially the intro, outro, Hellfire, and the score in general. I love Alan Menken. The big choirs... gah! Chills! Love it!

I'm a huge fan of the book from Victor Hugo, but I also love this movie so much. Like Doug said, if you just get past the fact it's Disney's adaptation, most people will know what to expect from it. I'm often very picky when it comes to movies adapted from books, but I think I can let this movie slide, because even the Lon Chaney movie wasn't accurate to the book (although it's a lot closer to it than this movie) and this movie has great actors, animation, songs etc. Also, it's pretty mature for a Disney movie, with the religious motifs and Frollo lusting over Esmeralda, so I'll always give this movie props...

I was obsessed with this movie ever since I was like 3 years old. The only part I found scary that I would run out of the room for was when Quasimodo was tied down and bullied at the festival. I didn't actually watch that scene in full until I was at least 11.

You know what makes me mad? The fact that the stage musical didn’t make it to Broadway. It’s going right alongside the movie: in the grossly underrated category. The story is more book accurate and it has tons more songs that were also written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.
Boba Fett I believe the reason that Hunchback didn’t go to Broadway was the cost. It was too expensive to pay both the actors and the choir (as well as all the other usual expenses) and they weren’t willing to cut the choir because they felt that harmed the production so that it didn’t have the full effect, which I would agree with. It’s unfortunate, but at least we have the cast recording to listen to! And now, local theatres are able to acquire the rights to put it on. There was a production recently I think by 5th Avenue Theatre that did a production with a deaf actor playing Quasimodo. From the clips, it looked AMAZING! I wish they’d filmed it on the stage to release in movie theaters or something like they’ve been doing recently, because I would love a professional Hunchback video-especially of that production!

I completely agree on the choir thing. The choir makes the whole movie seem bigger than it is, and really sets the tone for the story. The soundtrack works wonders for this movie, and I'm absolutely in love with it.
"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is arguably one of my favorite Disney animated films of all time and it's at the top 5. I like how Doug stated his own reason that how this film cannot reach to the highest point as much like other Disney classic films. It's pretty low for this film because non of these audiences didn't even care about this movie. What's interesting to me is that this film released in Summer 1996 while other summer blockbuster films weren't that spectacular like Doug said about "Dark Ages of Summer Movies" while he pointed out that "Independence Day," "Twister," "The Phantom," "KaZaam," "Jack," and other 96 films weren't that good because they are stupid and crappy. When I saw this movie in my VHS, this movie blew me away and it's probably the best summer film that why people didn't get the popularity. Then the film becomes dark and it didn't turn into a Disney film, but this one is actually turned into a underrated flick and it grew me that it has memorable scenes...
, fantastic art work of taking place in old age of Paris, and the songs were stronger that it keeps my attention to hear it and that choir and that Hellfire song is awesome. It's actually a film that turns only for adults and not towards to children because of the setup, the lust of sexuality, and the dark adaptation that children won't find it interesting. At least people who grew up watching this movie even today, they make the popularity so strong. I would say that this is best performance by Tom Hulce and Tony Jay for playing good roles in a Disney film. And how can't you not like Quasimodo's singing voice that it's hard to come up and turn into a passionate singer that it's nice to hear Tom Hulce's voice and the animation looks gorgeous including the climax at the end is one of my favorite moments. Enjoy this movie and this time I will get this one on Blu-Ray because it will be part of my favorite collection. Who knows? Thanks to Doug who has good points about the movie.

I always thought the Gargoyles were imaginary, and when they fought it was just simply Debris falling from the Tower. And they showed the gargoyles throwing stuff off was just Quassimoto seeing debris falling and just reassuring himself that he might not be alone.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is my favorite book and even still I absolutely adore this movie. It's my favorite Disney movie, I love it even more than I do The Lion King.

That is a reverse harem. I got really confused about it when I was little. When I grew up I understood. The sequal clarifies things by having Esmerelda with Pheobus as a married couple. They even have a son.
My personal favorite villain, my favorite Disney soundtrack, and my favorite visual Disney spectacle. I ADORE this movie.

And not only that, but the story explains that merfolk have no souls, so when they die, that's it. No afterlife.
The retconned version is hardly better; she does go to the afterlife, but her happiness depends on children all around the world being well-behaved (thanks, Victorian values!).
Yikes. Does it explain why they don't have souls? Also, I've forgotten the exact reason for the melting.

So she lived as long as he loved her. How sad.
+Roberta Tallienne Yeah the Little Mermaid is a very tragic tale but that is aslo the reason I like it. It has the moral of "sometimes you can't get everything you want." I think it a good lesson to give to young children even with the story having a bitter sweet ending.
Ohhh my god, one of the things I love the most about this movie is the fucking music, it’s gorgeous, dramatic, enormous.... everytime I hear the song about the bells of Norte dame I got goosebumps... definitely one of my favorite movies.

I watched the live action film the day before the Carhedral caught fire. My then-boyfriend and I saw it together and he texted me the next day with the news.

I never caught onto Frolo lusting after Esmeralda. I just thought he was trying to creep her out. Now I'm older, I'm just like... it's basically telling viewers (discreetly) that there are people who are creepy and lustful. Disney just taught me, if people are jerks, they'll either kill you or make you miserable
My favorite memory of this movie was the laugh I got seeing t played on Disney Jr, not altered at all. It was surreal watching Hellfire with the Disney Jr logo in the corner.
I always liked the movie since I was a kid, and some months ago I watched it again and understand all what it was happening. The only problem I have with this one if that Disney gives the worst message: If you are not a blonde handsome man you won't get the girl

Well, it does give the message of respect being earned, so... It does compensate.
Hands down, this movie has probably one of the most badass soundtracks i have ever heard. The Choir, the pipe organs, the overall gothic feel was just breathtaking. Its also one of my personal favorite movies of all time
