#1 Reason Why You're NOT Building Muscle

  • Alright, today we're going over what I think is the number 1 reason that holds people back from building muscle and making serious gains... hint, it's you're fault.
    **NEW FULL GYM PROGRAM: bit.ly/fullgymprogram
    30 DAY GARAGE PROGRAM: bit.ly/3igtiIF
    Now I know people will argue about this and say it's your diet or the supplements you're not taking but the most prevalent reason is people are simply not working out hard enough. I know that's a tough pill to swallow but look around the gym and see if anyone is even breaking a sweat, even at the most hardcore gyms people are so focused on filming themselves for IG they don't put much thought into what they are doing. This should help you change that.
    I also go over exactly what it means to push yourself to failure on every set.

    I’m 23 with depression and anxiety as well as body dysmorphia. I used to self harm and had thoughts about making attempts on my life almost daily. With that cake addiction to alcohol and drugs and an overall disgust for myself. Working out saved my life. I finally have something to look forward to that gives me immediate satisfaction. It also taught me discipline in other parts of my life like college. Before I started working out I failed out of college twice. Now, I’m proud to say I am now in aviation maintenance and have all As. Thank you Ryan for always making me laugh and showing the science behind every muscle group! You saved me!

    A couple years ago I did myself the biggest favor ever.... I stopped counting reps and go to failure. My goal is to aim for 20 reps just like he mentioned, but I don't count because your mind fails before your body does. If your mind says do 20, then you'll end up being tired at 20. When you could actually do 27. Just count completely random numbers, 35, 12, 18, 91,... That way you never know how many reps you're actually doing. Go to failure.

    • @shainester
      @shainester 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Do you time your sets? I've always done heavier weight and lower reps that lasted maybe 15 - 20 seconds. Now I'm focusing on sets that last 45 - 50 seconds and go to failure, and I just count reps for the sake of it. But, I just started adopting the lighter weight & more sets method and going to failure on every set.

    • @johnmatejcik2379
      @johnmatejcik2379 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@shainester each rep is probably about 2 seconds, I don't time sets, because every set is a different number of reps at failure. But I do time the time between sets and I keep that at about 30 seconds.

    • @benhall2235
      @benhall2235 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      That’s not a bad idea although how do you track your progress? Also I thought that for hypertrophy the optimal rep range is 8-12 and 3 or 4 sets of the heaviest possible weight you could manage to do that with. 20 reps and up would tell me that I’m not lifting heavy enough. Unless I’m training for conditioning or endurance of course in which case the more reps the better.

    • @johnmatejcik2379
      @johnmatejcik2379 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@benhall2235 everyone is built different, so you may have to experiment. But this does definitely work for me. But you have to go to true failure not just counting a number and stopping. Short breaks, 4 to 5 sets. Good form is key, you don't get that with heavy weights, you cheat. Muscle "time under tension" is critical. With heavy weights stressing the muscle only lasts a couple seconds. Every once in a while I do throw in a heavy day about once every 2 weeks. I know people that all they have to do is look at weights and they can grow. They piss me off. So you have to try some things, find out what's best for you. Test a system for at least two to three months, not just a week or two, that is too short.

      @@johnmatejcik2379 cool thanks man I’ll give it a go. I have recently started to do lighter weights and concentrate on the mind/muscle link and good form but have only been doing it for a couple of weeks so far. I’ll keep at it.

    Two kids, and a happy life removed from 25, and I have been in the worst shape of my life for several years. Distended my left elbow beyond retraction when I was tripped at work, and caught all 320lbs of me on the left. Spent two years drinking bourbon, while teaching myself how to cook, meal plan & eat better. Never been a beer guy. Never been a cake or sweets guy. I was/am a bit still made of meat, bread and cheese.
    Went back to work after two surgeries on the arm, and torn up the meniscus in my knee. Off work again. No drinking this time. Physical therapy, and started gathering gym supplies.
    And watching your stuff.
    I'm notoriously slow to change habits.
    44 y.o. now, and I'm actually okay with the dietary adjustment. I have a little house with a little garage and a little Florida room, and I just try to get my time in.
    Best part is I work as a bus driver.

    Ryan, thanks for this video. I am by NOOOO means a muscle machine or even close. I’m 46 and I’ve had seven surgeries for Crohn’s Disease, issues with good absorption, whatever. My point is that I work out a LOT, but not sure you’d be able to tell. The thing that blew me away about this video is when you said if you look around the gym, people don’t seem to be sweating or trying that hard. Yes!!! A tiny bit of background-whenever my son or daughter went with me to our community gym, they would always tell me they’re embarrassed because at the END of my sets, I’m growling or I yell a little or loud exhale, etc. they would insist that it’s unnecessary. After watching you explain this, I understand what’s going on. Despite my actual physique, I try to push myself into an intense burn/failure. Most of the people I watch aren’t doing that. They have a preselected number of reps in mind, and when they hit that, they’re done. Thanks so much for posting. I subscribed to your channel!

    Good and simple explanation when it comes to the failure training to gain muscle. As a med.trainer im responsible for my clients and one of the things I always want to know is " is the client ready to reach their goals". Meaning, the stress this way of training will give you're body can ruin your gains if you are not in balance. If you have a stressful job or you sleep is off (you already pointed out food) than you're already in a stressful position. Pushing yourself to failure for a longer time can than overload your system causing some serious issues. You are very experienced and you will know this stuff but I just wanted to point this out for those who watch this video. 100% agree with the therapy. I have 2 young kids (one with special needs), no family help, and a demanding job. I go to the gym from 5-6:30am six days a week while everyone is still sleeping. At least 3 of those days are brutal AF. It’s the only time I get for myself. I’ve been a gym bro for over 20 years but committed last year to getting in the best shape of my life by my 40th bday. Lost almost 30lbs of fat and kept most of my muscle. I owe a big part of that to this channel and a few others for keeping me motivated.

    Just a heads up on the ''work to failure'' concept. I completely agree you should push yourself HARD when you are at the gym. If you walk away without a sweat that day didnt count. But i would also heavily advice proper rest, as in longer rest periods that makes you recover completely. If you push your muscles every second day 365 days a year you will grow but your muscles also never fully heal, nor will you push yourself as hard. Its like putting half a tank of gas in a car and expect it to go for as many miles as a fully loaded car, or plug 2 pistons and expect no difference. The potential is there but you dont have enough fuel or mechanical endurance to apply the same force.
    I see ALOT of videos about working out and pushing the limit, but few of them enforce rest properly. Those who get into a good routine are likely to fail since they just end up hitting a wall of 0 energy.

      It's okay to push to failure, but if you do throw in a deload week every now and then, I promise you, ur gains will go through the roof.
      What I do is, I split my training into 5 week cycles, where I push myself harder and harder with each week.
      Week one, I leave 2-3 reps in my tank and week four, I go all out to failure and add dropsets and isometrics.
      Week 5 then is a deload week, where I workout with 10 percent less weight.

      @@DapperSapper515 you don’t need to be in a caloric surplus to build muscle if you’ve got your nutrition on point. Bulking and cutting is a flabby shortcut to gaining muscle along with a load of fat usually and then having to spend half yore time trying to get rid of the fat. As long as you’re eating sleeping and training right and enough high quality protein you can absolutely build strong lean muscle (admittedly at a slower rate) and constantly be ripped in a small caloric deficit. That’s what I’ve pretty much always done, although it was a lot easier in my twenties and thirties because I really didn’t have to watch what I ate as long as I was training. It’s what athlean x prescribes too.

      Building strength and muscle is a long term project, 5 years is not much. Secret of success is to exercise regularly for long time. But training always to failure is too hard for most people, training becomes a burden and they leave it. And this is even worse option than to train with bad attitude, too lightly.
      .
      I must say "30 day workout plan" doesn't sound a serious thing at all. It is not about what you do for 30 days but what you do for 3000 days, or the rest of your life.
      I'm 48, can do almost 50 clean push ups, many muscle ups etc. so I'm quite strong for my age. I do train hard and last reps of my sets are always hard. But I am constantly cautious not to make my sets so hard training will become a burden, not a joy.
      You can't train always harder. In the long run you must find a sustainable hard level and if that really becomes too easy then add resistance. So you must not push yourself too hard. Quite often professionals (on gear) give unrealistic and bad advice to ordinary people.

So its nice that some people can kill themselves at gym me im just keeping myself lean and quick. Injury free. I have a long season...as far as work and life. Breaking myself at gym is a quick way for failure. Economically etc. So while this vid is nice it doesn't speak for the many of us in service industry who cannot go so hard at gym that we are broken. As a human being we have goals but being injured and not able to lift a box or tray for qoek because i destroyed myself at gym is simply not responsible. What I mean by that is that I'm not at that level that you train at (or at least I thought so). I'm on week 3 Time of Death on the 3o day gym workout and already seeing changes. Not life changing, but definitely noticeable and will give this another go after week 4. My reps have gone up, and slowly have been able to add more weight as the weeks go on. My problem up to this was that I would workout or get some cardio and then still have a shit diet. Once I started seeing my biceps and quads pop up a bit from these intense workout, I now find myself weighing my food and keeping track or my macros, something I never did in the past. I will definitely recommend this to anybody who's looking for a challenge. It definitely won't hurt your pocket either (especially during these crazy times) Thank you, Ryan!

I just wanted to feel that feeling ya get when ya proud of what you have just done that winning feeling. Well i got that the 1st workout i done and shit got better as i changed my diet and added a few more bits of equipment and then i started noticing growth and power...and that burn again. Im 41 and thought for years now that that side of my life was over but on 4 weeks I've gone from 65kg to 73kg and put on 3 cm on my biceps. I just feel confident and sore but mostly confident now. Thanks mate I like myself again and thats a huge thing for me and has made every area of my life better. Especially being a dad and feeling like a man. Thank you so much mate keep doing what you do and soon enough youll be at 2 million👍🏼

    Hey Ryan, this is great! Very motivating video. One question, what do you do in the instance you get Rhabdo? I had a shit month in May and went to the gym for the first time in about 2 years and worked 4 upper body exercises to complete and utter failure. By the time I got to skull crushers I was pushing out 3 maybe one rep until I could not lift my arms without weight (probably needed to train up a bit to get back in the swing of it rather than full speed ahead on the first day back). I ended up with CK levels of over 100k and spent 4 days in the ICU. I’m back at it and am now as strong as I had been if not stronger but want to ensure I don’t get that shit again. Nothing like kissing your muscles out through your kidneys. Any advise in this space? Thanks for what you do!

    Hey dude. Love the content and I've got two questions:
    1 - I've got a herniated L5/S1 disc and am trying to figure out what to avoid and sub in the gym. Any tips or experience?
    2 - as I've rehabbed the disc I've chilled on lifting and started running hoping to lean out a bit...gained 3-8lbs depending on the day. Is this normal? I'm 6'3" 215 after a healthy thunder dump. Thanks!

    Just got out of the hospital after a 2 week stay for appendix issues.
    Due to the pain and horrible hospital food as well as the inibility to move around very much i lost 9 lbs of lean muscle which took me 90 days of working my ass off in the gym to put on prior to being hospitalized. It might not sound like much but im 35, 6'4" and I was up to 197lbs after walking around at 180 or less for most of my life.
    I was extremely discouraged but today i went back to the gym for my day 1 of the come back and im going to do it even better this time, correct all the mistakes i was making before and come out bigger and stronger physically, mentally, and spiritually.
    Thank you for your channel!

    my problem isn't intensity during a single workout. But, overall my problem has been staying consistant. I get into a program for a few months, then, life kicks my ass a bit and or my circumstances change, my schedule changes, I lose access to a gym, etc. The last circumstance to knock me off my program was getting married and starting a family, the circumstances that got me back into the gym was losing my job when the pandemic hit, I made a 6ftx6ft space in my grarage and started lifting what I had, a few dumbells and an easy curl bar. I'm looking to add more equipment soon, once the cash comes back.

      I wouldn't call that "bro science". Lots of people have built very nice physiques using those set and rep ranges. It's all about intensity and progressive overload. Anyway, different strokes for different folks.

    From a Russian trainer of over 40 year now, biggest tip to grow all muscle is follows. When most people leave gym, the blood sugar is low from anaerobic work as is insulin and insulin only hormone in body that actually allow you to build muscle. So when you are done with last rep of last exercise in gym, do what I do - bring this post-recovery stack (PRS) into gym with you and drink right away: 28 ounce apple juice, 2 scoop of Optimum whey, and 10 gram creatine. Higher glycemic/non-acidic apple juice spike blood sugar, creatine fuel mitochondria to produce good ATP to build, and fluidized whey is right there to provide rebuild protien. It work like mathematic and we use in Russia for many decades - just try. Also take 2000mg of l-argenine daily to allow the muscle to metabolize better and utilize the PRS.

    I remember a navy seal telling me, "when you think you've gone to your complete maximum, your body has only done 30% of its potentail" push yourself because your body is capable of more than we know

    • @luffebassen
      @luffebassen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True...but we are trying to build ourselfs up and not grind ourselfs down like what they do with seals during hell week. So you can not go at full force like that 4-5 times per week. If you try, then you are in for a world of hurt due to hurting joints are worse after a while.
      Next...if you are Natty, then you can reach your genetic limit pretty fast. Like within a few years is where you will gain like 80-90% of your total muscle mass.
      Only if you are on some kind of gear like our boy in the video, then you can potentially keep growing and you also recover much faster then any Natty person.

    This dude is great. Love his videos. Similar to what he mentioned, I started doing the 20 “effective reps”workout that Athlean X did videos on. Not only did it shave time off my workout, I can see and feel the such a difference. Soaked in sweat when Im done. Basically like Ryan mentioned you start with an ignition set of 12 reps of whatever weight you know you will fail at 10-12 reps. After the ignition set, recoup for 15 seconds and then start your “effective” 20 reps. However many sets it takes to get there, but just 15 seconds in between.
