Hellboy is a nice comic series but I mainly buy floppies with Gary Gianni art. Lobster Johnson is very good.

One great feature of Hellboy is the fact that you don’t have to buy or like every spin-off to enjoy it. Many read just the Hellboy or BPRD. Lobster is good. I’m eagerly waiting for the second Omnibus.

I wasn't aware of this release. I have about 3-4 of the novelizations. The first book - The Lost Army - was an insta-buy because of all the Mignola interior illustrations. The story's premise is awesome, but unfortunately the story is lackluster. As the novles continued to be released, they featured less and less Mignola artwork. I eventually stopped buying them. I probably won't pick up this release of The Bones of Giants, but it's nice to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks!

So far I’ve been buying these add-on stories obidiently. They’re pricey but as long as I feel they are meaningful it’s OK. What ”meaningful” means is another thing. I guess quality of writing has to stay high and/or content has give enough interesting nuggets to the Hellboy universe.

I’m a bit reluctant about this latest HB hardcovers, who should have been TP. I know they’re are pushing the universe to max, milking the Mignola’s name to the brink. I don’t agree but I understand. And the fact this books are all HC it’s another sign that’s the purpose of this editions. I would gladly buy it if was MM the artist, because is the main reason why I started to read this stuff back in the early 90’s. And as someone said, the best reason why the Hellboy’s universe is the best, it’s because it has an end. Or I think it had. But I have to say that your arguments are enticing.

All very good points. Of these new stories The Bones Of Giants is the most important for me. It really is a true Hellboy story. At the same time it´s strange to have a "new" story in the main saga as we all thought it had ended. But this is just one more story of Hellboy getting mad at monsters and giving them some hard times. This does not change the big story in anyway. But it was a siren call to read the complete saga again:)
But it would have been nice to get it and all new stories in softcover TPB. There is nothing THAT special in these stories that require hardcovers. This will definitely turn away some customers.
Young Hellboy - The Hidden Land is one of these new stories. It was the first time I felt there is pressure to come up with something to sell.
But Hellboy universe is truly one of a kind in how well it has been kept unbroken. This is why it will find new fans even years from now.
And yes, if there only was more stories with Mignolas art.
Now that you made me think this further I can feel idea for a video brewing...

@@analogcomicshey there! Just an update about this book I’ve recently read: liked the story, the artist is not MM but does is “style” enough to be visually appealing, and finally the colors are the least of my liking. Dave Stewart is a master in this aspect and it shows on comparison. Oh, I also bought Lobster Johnson omnibus 2 and Koshchei in Hell (this one’s a must). Best regards

@@eduardocarvalho861 Glad you liked it. I agree on your comments. I’ve tried not to look at new Hellboy releases😅I’m so easy prey for them even though I decided to put them on hold. I’m passively waiting for them to be collected into larger(and cheaper) volumes. Having said that I did order Lobster Omni Vol 2 but I still have it in plastics waiting in my to-read-pile. Lobster is definitely part of that original old school Hellboy so it’s a must buy. Don’t tempt me on that Koschei🙈

@@analogcomics but I will tempt you! Only saying that the prologue and epilogue are drawn by Mignola himself! Check it out

Hellboy bring back love to american comics again,in this part of Europe i grow mostly on italian comics, pulp stuff, you know, pure adventure then in some point of life that publishing house started doing crossovers with mainstream super heroes Marvel/DC,i respect any comic fan out there but those things are not for me and i despise commercial torture, then Hellboy movie break out and i was taken,Robert E Howard's legacy and Lovecraft's weird gods as a influence along with folklore and "strange tales" wich we kids from country side would speak along the campfire started a flame in me,i adore this guy

Hellboy surely is one of the Great Series of comics. It highly re-readable. I just wish these new stories would come out in less expensive softcover format. Other than that I’m a happy bunny. 🤘🏻

It's just Hellboy has that essence and soul of the pulps, and pulp belongs in softcover

How do DH and Mr. Mignola still justify the continuation of this universe? How much is there to add to an already overpopulated and over exploited story line? Frankly if it’s not a financial issue I find it quite hard to understand it. I know Mr. Mignola nowadays dedicates very little time to comics except writing, off course, and all the covers for the universe books. So most of the series initial successful premise, his unique art style, is somewhat lost in this “unnatural” extended endeavor. Personally I would rather have a new complete all-Mignola book every two years or so than this, but it’s only my opinion…

To continue something considered a finished series always rises questions. Even if its handled by original creator(s). In Hellboys case most of these add-ons are (luckily)truly just add-ons. They are placed around the main story rather than in it. So they don’t change the continuity afterwards.
But I agree at least 50% with you:)I would be OK if there were no new Hellboy universe comics published. But as I explain in the video The Bones of Giants however is unique in many ways.
Expensive hardcovers bother me the most to be honest.
