  • Before heading back home to the east coast from Colorado, I decided to take my bike up to the Black Hills of South Dakota to explore for a day. I've wanted to come ride here ever since I passed through in 2018 during a cross-country move. It absolutely lived up to my expectations and then some! Watch Part 2 here: • Speed Twin Takes the B...

    My wife and I visited Mount Rushmore for the first time this past November. We had a great time and all we could talk about was coming back with our bikes and spending a couple of weeks riding in the Black Hills. Thanks for the video!

    Having watched most of your Colorado videos, I think you're my favorite moto trip guy. It took me a while to figure out what is different about your videos from most others. Besides the obvious great bike and great scenery, I really appreciate your fresh, straightforward perspective on what you're experiencing. Thank you.

    Having just moved back from Calgary to Montreal, my buddy Mark and I headed south into Montana leading us through Yellowstone and into the Black Hills. My God, that trip those roads just absolutely incredible. Those loops are truly incredible just like that cool little town stuck in time, Deadwood. I’ll do the plains to get there again. Fantastic.

    love this video. i live on the flat part of SD a few hours to the east of the Hills. Multiple times a year i ride over to the Black Hills. It's like the "coming of age" ride, for myself my first ride out of town was to there, and this summer my younger brother's first ride was to there, he rode a 250cc virago and myself on a v65 honda. i think my older brother also took his first ride to Sturgis when he was 16 on his KZ550.
    #1 and #2 and #3 tourist traps are in this damn state. mount rushmore, wall drug, corn palace. lol

    Half the fun of running to the black hills is the trip there on a bike, I’ve ridden in and out of there every way imaginable and I’d trade a ride across east SD any day over east coast traffic.
    If I had to drive 1000 miles just to get on my bike I don’t think I’d enjoy it nearly as much.

    Great video, love the sound of your Speed Twin. I just stumbled upon the first video and found myself watching your whole trip. tbh Colorado has a lot more to offer than Majorca. I spent a week there in 2019, hired an Africa Twin. There are some nice roads, but a lot of bicycle enthusiasts and slow tourist rental cars share the roads, and after 3 days I felt I had driven all the interesting bits at least once. Maybe have a look at Gran Canaria? Getting quite popular here in Europe for biking during winter.

      Thank you! I am just shy of 5'9 with a 30" inseam and to me the Speed Twin feels neither large nor compact. I can get the balls of both feet on the ground, but only one heel at a time. I think a 6' person would find the bike to be short but not too short.

    • @Mindamasta
      @Mindamasta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @VanBlamm
      @VanBlamm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good problem to have, I think! The T120 will be better for long-distance comfort, but the Speed Twin is quicker and lighter. For me personally, the weight alone made it a no-brainer.
      And no, those gloves have always fit me equally well...

  • @ams914
    @ams914 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I did a 2k milke round trip ride from LA to Aspen and it was BRUTAL on my Guzzi with no windscreen. It took me three days to do 1000 miles and I don't think I could've gone a fourth day, or it at least would've been seriously miserable and slower. How many miles did you average a day on your trip? How much time did you give yourself? I found 350 miles a day to be my limit, did 420 one one of those days and it was honestly way too much. Nothing fun about it.

    • @VanBlamm
      @VanBlamm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If all I'm trying to do is cover ground (ie freeway riding) then 350-400mi is my daily limit. For me though, it's my butt that limits my range; wind blast isn't even part of the equation. If I'm trying to have fun (sticking to interesting roads, stopping to film, etc), then my daily mileage ends up being about 200-250. I find that any more than that gets less fun. My MO is to take a rest day after every two or three full riding days.

    • @ams914
      @ams914 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VanBlamm It's amazing that wind blast doesn't phase you, the constant "pushing back" on my head after hours left me with real neck strain that I had to stay on top of with aspirin and stretching when I landed for the night. And I'm 29 so in theory not an old man haha
