Letting the Noise Stop You From Skating! Rookie Mistake #16

  • Distractions are all around us. However, in recent years I've noticed a unique form of extraneous noise, keeping my adult beginner students from achieving their skateboarding goals: FITNESS!! We should all take care of our bodies.
    However, if you're a beginner, having a good stretching, cross training and nutrition routine will have a negligible effect on your skating, at best. This is because your body isn't being pushed to its limit by the simple tricks you're starting to learn.
    So, while I think a good health and fitness routine should be a part of everyone's life, ONLY GETTING OUT AND SKATING WILL MAKE YOU A BETTER SKATER!
    If you're surprised that I have to say this, don't be. I've experienced this type of paralysis often, amongst my adult students. In my opinion, this is the result of our incessant social media feeds. Which inundate us with fitness content, aimed at selling us services and supplements. All while clouding our minds. Skateboarding is a tool that can free us from these distractions, as long as we don't allow said noise to keep us off the board!
    Let me know which tricks you’d like to learn in the comments. Thanks for watching.

    I’m a Pirate, and I skate for the love of it, we never stretched in the 90’s just grip it and rip it! I only get to make it to the skate park 30 miles away one time a week, so I hit it hard for a minimum of four hours no matter what,thanks Norman🙏🏻💯🤙🏼😎

      I'm 40 and just got back into skating last season (got snow on the ground here atm) and it was the same for me, no stretches, no worries just go all day every day. Unfortunately after 20 years of not skating and work life I cant skate the same amount or at the same skill I did when I was young but when I do get out, its usually 4 hours min. I try not too worry to much about much other then just having a good time.

    I think a good way incorporate the health fitness stuff into skating is to consider skating a workout, because it is, it builds muscles and burns calories. A lot of these people's issue is they end up thinking skating is a luxury and not part of their fitness routine. The only way you build a majority of muscles in skating is only by skating, the reason to do exercise elsewhere is to make sure the rest of your body is as strong as the parts that you use in skating.

    • @jacobkershaw7770
      @jacobkershaw7770 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A tip for making your skating feel more like a workout is by having two set ups, one to train on and one to use when you get clips, the training one should be heavier so that it builds those muscles up more, so when you are skating the other board everything feels easier and comes more naturally.

    Also at the point where learning new tricks is having to put 2-3 different tricks together so it can be pretty frustrating as far as progression goes. 98% of the time though im just skating because i love to skate. To me it's not worth it most of the time to put myself through that kind of battle especially when i have to raise 3 kids and have a full-time job.

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I feel that. I put off those brutal learning periods these days. Opting to just have fun, when I’m not trying to film something. I miss having lots of simple tricks to learn, and getting that gratification on a weekly or monthly basis.

    I can totally relate to what Norman is saying. I almost allowed myself to not skate unless I did my exercises beforehand. And I am a beginner. Used to skate in the 90s I'm 48 now back on the board! Quitting back in the day was a huge mistake! So I do exercise between times because my balance and my jumping ability sucks! My body has changed a lot since I was a teen! I am now a weekend warrior because I work a lot so progress on my board is slow.
    So at home I work on balance, jumping and the mental game of fear. As I almost quit boarding because I fall A LOT! I stat padded up now.
    For anyone struggling with fear I highly recommend the book/audio called Clarity by James Smart. This book has enabled me to understand that I am making fear a reality.
    The book goes in..This is not a mind over matter book. It's Clarity. Thank you for your time Norman!!

    I think for me it use to be skating around large crowds or showing up to a skatepark and having to skate the way that others are interested in until i stop giving a crap and learned to push for myself. It's not about other skaters validation wheater they're stoked what you've land or not. The mind is a powerful tool and i learned to use it well. I pay close attention to general fitness, nutrition, sleep, etc. But the only thing I let determine whether I'm skating or not is if I'm sore either to the point that I'd likely make it worse and strain/injure something or I'd be mentally distracted (and therefore also more likely to injure something).

    I'm glad you mentioned longevity. I would argue that proper nutrition and resistance training will most certainly make you a better skateboarder. Example: person "A" can only skate for 10 more years because all they do is skate, eat like trash, and don't workout. Person "B" skates a bit less per week, but prioritizes sleep, nutrition, and lifts weights only twice per week. Person B will not only likely be able to spend more time on their board in the long run, but that also means more tricks learned becoming the better skater. Fitness/nutrition isn't the issue, it's the application. If it didn't make you a better skater, you wouldn't see literally every other type of athlete in the world working out to supplement their sport. Btw I comment with the upmost respect I really enjoy your thoughts and content.

    since i kept working out from my late teens to my current age of 38, getting back into skateboarding wasnt a hard transition. but there are SO MANY muscles you dont use unless you're skating. my gym time has had to reduce drastically to get sufficent training session on my board 3-4 days a week. i aim for 2-3 days of weight and calisthenic training in circuit form. i can warm up, do 3 rounds, and get out in 35-40 minutes. and 3-4 skate days a week, weather permitting on the off gym days of 1-1.5 hours. with adequate sleep and nutrition, foam rolling, and stretching before bed. i feel good as new every morning.

    Great talk. Other sports are a meritocracy where the best athletes actually can become 'pro' but skateboarding is kinda like the music industry where the best in the world may never get any recognition. Also the point about doing other things besides skating to improve your skating can get out of hand, though I would say something like tai chi, feldenkrais or somatic training may get you the most mileage.

    Great insight Norman, as a skater over 50 my generation was all about the punk rock roots and pirate mentality. You were a jock or kook if you stretched much less trained. (pretty much unheard of) Showing up at the spot smoking cigs/weed drinking beer was the story of my teens, 20's-30's and early 40's for sure. I will say this after my 13 year hiatus I came back almost 100lbs overweight and stiff as a board. I had to do light strength training and deep stretching to even get my body prepared as well as a grown man BMX bike to get my legs going again. I quit alcohol, weed/tobacco and completely shifted my diet and mindset. My first day back man I couldn't even ollie and it broke my heart, now I'm up to 2ft high Ollies so everything in balance can work. I mostly changed my life for the love of skateboarding, life and continued longevity. I love your content and the filmmaking is getting better and better my man. Keep going!❤🛹

    This is so cool man. Getting deep on overwhelming yr natural instincts and commit to tricks. It was a basic concept that helped me a lot. Also, from previous lessons of yours, remembering that you have to distinctly: jump - keep feet in air - put your feet back on the board (but do not extend them to the board - meet it). It's not going to just come back to you and automatically go under yr feets, especially if you are putting yr feet right on the ground after you jump

    Nah. I was doing calisthenics, some dumbbell and kettleball, boxing skipping rope, speed ladders, and cardio before I even skated. I still do it on alternate days - skate day then training session... I know I won't get as good as if I skated everyday. Like you said, it's all about goals. At some point you have to give up something and focus on one thing, if that's your goal. Personally, I only focus on flat ground. I just want to improve my agility and reaction time more.
    Funny, I don't do any warm ups before I skate. Though I do follow Tom Asta's routine, he said he does shuv its before starting the session. I do it too because of him. That's is probably my warm up. But no stretches. I do more than stretching in other days, I don't need it.
    So yes, just keep in mind only skateboarding can improve skateboarding.
    And no, the best martial artists aren't pirates lol. They train extensively with their coaches, peers, and in their gym. Do you think Pacquiao and Mayweather would reach their level if they lived a skater life? Nah dude, be real. I get what you're saying but it doesn't apply to all. The best basketball players in Euro and NBA are pirates? The best football players are pirates? You don't just see the hardwork. Yeah, that's a stretch.

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All that’s great. But you completely missed what I said and heard what you wanted. I gave specific examples of people not skating due to the preparation taking precedence, even though their goal is to be better at skating. As far as martial artists, I know quite a few and despite what some of them say publicly they’re pirates. In fact there are some obvious public examples (from fighters I have no connection to). But, every individual is different and it’s ideal to work hard and treat your body well.

    I have experienced this in sort of a good way: I do train with weights and also skate. The training started with the goal of improving my health and physique. Then I started noticing benefits on the skating: increased stamina, more strength in my body to deal with skating falls. So help with skating became yet another goal of my training… Long story short, now I much rather prefer having trained the day before skating, feels like a lucky charm and a mechanism to overcome the procrastination some of us face when it comes to skating: is a challenging activity nevertheless and one often comes up with excuses to postpone it. If I trained the day before then I totally dismiss those excuses and go out to skate.

    One thing you can do for sticking kickflips if you're having trouble with it is to hold on to a railing, some kind of fence, or anything strong enough to hold your weight thats preferably about as high as your belly button, while you practice them. Pop em flick em and you can kinda hold yourself up while it rotates And then stick it with both feet. It's not like a life hacker you, but it will get you used to actually landing from the board with both feet. Sorry, I know my grammar sucks right now.
