    I’m an audiologist in WV with a private practice. I have hunted my whole life, wear hearing aids, and love the sounds of the outdoors. If you can make it out to WV I will get you set up with hearing protection and hearing aids - you won’t regret getting back what you are missing. Great buck - thanks for taking us along!

    Explain the shot is just priceless. Having that understanding will help anyone who bow hunts.

    Great buck! But I think im more impressed that I haven’t seen one comment asking “whats it score?” Finally because of a few channels like this one we’re building a community again of people just enjoying hunting for what it is, and not just a deers score

    • @officerfoxtrot3633
      @officerfoxtrot3633 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think score can be important in gauging the quality of the genetics, as well as the ethics of nearby hunters, and the herds overall health. The score isn't just about who shot the bigger deer, it can also be about who is managing their wildlife herds more successfully and keeping a healthier balance of mature animals. an 8 point can either be a 2 year old "hat rack" 8 or it can be a 9 year old monarch of a deer on the downhill slope of its growth. Score helps give perspective to an animal you cannot physically handle and helps others understand the size and maturity of the animal. I agree its not always about score from a trophy standpoint. I have a 3 year old 152" 15 point i killed with my dad 6 years ago that will never be topped on my trophy wall for importance. Unless i kill one bigger with my future kids or again my dad, I doubt ill ever have a deer that means more to me. But that isnt to say I have no ambition to hunt a take a larger deer someday. two years later i was after a huge 10 that I found dead during rifle season. Scored 166 5/8's and was probably 5-6 years old. Even if i shot that deer with my bow, it wouldn't have meant as much to me as the 15 dubbed "Chip." And i was really gunning for him because I had not shot a buck with my bow by then. I was saving it for something really nice then settled for a young goofy cull buck in 2020 during my quarantine. lol

      What’s it’s score?

    • @19knives
      @19knives 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@officerfoxtrot3633 Ethics of nearby hunters? Ethics has everything to do with a clean kill, putting in the work to find the deer you shot, butchering, cleaning and using all the meat, abiding by state law, and being fair and respectful to other hunters in the area. Ethics are applied equally to a doe as it is a mature buck and nothing to do with score.
      Everything else you said I 100% agree with. Good luck to you in future hunts!

    Congrats for that beautiful buck.
    One thing I always notice from hunting with a bow, when letting the arrow go 100% of the time deers tend to get low to get on their back legs in order to take off hard as soon as they hear the action. I’ve seen numerous videos where the arrow passed over the back missing it completely. So the further the deer, more chances that the arrow will miss high on his back, or hits him high. Because of the distance that deer has extra second to jump and run. My point is , always aim lower if the deer is more than 25 yards away so this never happens. Myself I never hunted with bows. I harvest all my deers with slugs, but I enjoy watching hunting it with a bow.

    Congrats on finishing the deal Josh! I had a similar episode recently with a buck. Quartering to me at 12 yd. I put it behind the shoulder and squeezed the trigger when he paused on his own. The buck was trailing a doe and I never stopped him. He took a step just as the arrow was released. Impact was back a bit and magnified by the qtr to me angle. The buck mule kicked and WALKED into the thicket. I thought he was DRT just in the edge of thicket. It was 30 min before dark. I waited til well after dark to climb down. When i lowered my bow, i caught his outline by moonlight walking deeper into the bush. I collected my blood covered arrow and retreated til the following morning with my retriever, Rufus and my brother by another mother. . 15 hours later, Rufus tracked him down for a follow up shot with the shotgun. Black Hornet broadhead barely clipped the rear of one lung and severed liver. Intestines plugged the exit. I was fortunate to get him. I should’ve placed my pin dead in the shoulder with my 500+ grain arrow. A few inches back almost cost me a solid buck. What a rodeo, but we got him! Lessons learned in the field. Thank the good Lord, my hunting buddy, and Rufus! 👍🏼👍🏼

    • @louisschwarz3943
      @louisschwarz3943 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@dukeman7595 the deer was hurting bad. Might have survived but might not have as well. But I'll play along and say even if that deer would survive you still have to try your best to harvest a wounded animal, why would you not do your best to finish a wounded animal even if there's a good chance the deer is gonna survive. Not to mention its not like he knew the deer would survive before that finishing shot. Arrow through top of both lungs not so sure the deer would have survived. Might not have died that day or the next but pretty good chance eventually coyotes would run him down

      @@mowerds33 got to hit them in a better spot don't matter the arrow build i shot my 2nd biggest buck this year i shot thru both shoulders broke off 5 inch on entrance side. Blood like you poured it out of a bucket 300 yards then it went to drops then nothing. Went back 3 days grid searches and never found it. I shoot fmj 75g insert 100 grain exodus fixed blade. 550 grain set up but I should have let him take one more step from out behind tree but I thought where I hit him should have hit the heart but guess I was a little forward...

    You must have been torqueing your bow or something Buddy, watching slow motion how the arrow flies to the deer you can see that it looks like a twizzler going through the air. So glad you found him what an awesome animal. May want to check to make sure your rest is in tune as well.

  • @Kurtdog63

    Thanks for the autopsy. At that distance, you can hear the arrow approaching, so he may have ducked at the sound of the approaching arrow as well as the bow going off. To test this, set up a camera by your target at forty yards and you will see what I am talking about. You will hear the sound of the bow and then a short hiss as the arrow approaches. I have considered holding almost six oclock at the bottom of a deer, especially at longer range, because I do think they react more often than not. Glad you were able to recover. Thanks for sharing.

    Man those really mature animals like that buck can go for a while after being shot we all here stories of a deer someone shot and they find an arrow in them or a bullet like Jake and his gun buck that had a crossbow bolt in it whitetails are tough great job 🏹🦌👊

    Lots of talk about hitting lower, but my biggest concern was how far forward you aimed on a quartering away shot. Two inches further back may have had e a difference. Aim for the far leg when quartering away. Great deer, great effort on the recovery. I had to chase down two animals this year, one of mine and one for someone else. Not every shot is perfect. Glad you got him.

    Awesome stuff.
    I was always taught that I should aim heart level tight behind the shoulder on further bow shots so that if they duck, it's a double lung. If they don't, it's a back of the heart shot... Worked for me this year at 52 yards because he didn't duck. I knicked bone on the shoulder but still got 19 inches of penetration and caught the heart enough with one of my blades to shut it off. I think I knicked the lungs as well but Im not sure. I accidentally tore them up pulling them out.

    I commend you on showing the total recovery of that magnificent buck. Many times on video there is too much before the shot nonsense and the only followup is the last couple yards, making like every kill is recovered within 100 yards. Congrats on the great buck and the total recovery because if you hunt long enough you will experience something similar.
