Scones are so underrated , I grew up on them as a little girl and I still will make a huge batch of them from in the freezer for when I have guests . Good morning from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks for showing these! In America scones are triangle sweet pastries with icing. These Irish scones are what my grandmother from western Ireland taught her daughters. I grew up eating these with butter and jelly only they had raisins instead of currants. Miss my aunts and their wonderful baking. Happy St Patrick's Day
Once I ate scones in Oxford when I was a tourist there and it was so delicious! I felt in love with Oxford, London but most of all: Edinburgh! So I'm going to try to make these and the wild garlic scones from your Channel for my mom for the "Mother Day"! I am sure, it'll be the best gift! Thank you for your work, I am really enjoying watching your videos!
I watched yr video with so much pleasure, thought I knew it all...! Scone comes from the Gaelic sgonn, purists might insist, but yr lovely Irish way is so beautiful to listen to. You could call them happy scones.. Thank you so much and carry on inspiring people
Merry Christmas, Donal. I'm a Sconer not a Sconner. I tried this recipe today and the result was fantastic. Gives me the feeling that I can actually bake. Later on I'll be trying your Cheddar Cheese Dumpling recipe and I'm sure that will be a great success too. Love your work.
Saw you on the pier in Howth this morning Donal wheeling the pram it was pretty cold... you are related to a first cousin of mine and you are his double love your programmes and videos... can't be easy for you at the present time - take care
Nom nom, scones are a classic baked good, not just at tea time but all other times too. I'm so glad cooking channels have seen an increase in viewers, would-be bakers and veterans alike looking for recipes to try. Hmm... despite eating lunch while watching this, I'm feeling like a scone and tea right now.
I lived in Australia for a few years and that was where I had my first scone. Jam and clotted cream was the only way I ever had it there. But yours look so delicious, I am going to make these just as you made them - definitely with me sugar on top! Thanks Donal I’ve tried so many of your recipes now, I think I can legitimately say “ I cook with the Donal method”!
I love scones. And i love making it. Its just so satisfying when you can get the crumbly dough together 😅. We, in Malaysia, pronounce our scones just like you. And we usually eat them with cream or butter and jam. Its difficult and expensive to get clotted cream here.
Were I'm from we say scones emphasis on the o as in the letter not the sound o. I have eaten them with proper Clotted cream jam on top, jam then then clotted cream. In NZ we tend to use butter and Jam or whipped Cream on Jam
I follow a similar recipe, but I add the (caster) sugar to the egg and milk mix, with a little vanilla. And I use the last few mls of that mixture to brush on top - a beautiful eggy, milk, sweet wash!
Hi Donal they look delicious. I love Scones ❤️! You said it Donal they are best the Irish way hot out of the oven with melted butter and jam and a big pot of tea 🫖
Scone rhymes with con, at least here in Scotland. Must give these a go though, any time I've made them before I've overworked the dough and essentially ended up with biscuits. Butter, jam and optionally cream is usual here, in that order.
I am with you on this one , always scone with lashings of real Irish butter and raspberry or blackcurrant jam . I am going to go and make some now for the wife and myself for breakfast. Keep up the good work. Peter in Bray.
Lovely recipe, thanks so much... Great tip I've learnt is when the butter is just out of the fridge you can grate it into the flower, makes it so much easier... Yummy 🍀🇮🇪💚
Aussie tea time treat used to come home to hot scones waiting for us wrapped in a tea towel in a colander. Mmm😊😋 jam and whipped cream. Pumpkin scones are awesome too haven't had one in ages. In Australia we say Scone as in the word "on" Came across Donal ondeay and seen him on tv was on my Google news
Grew up in the states. I say scones, how Donal does. I always ate them with butter and jam. It was just a thing I did. The rest of my family only added butter.
Yea no English tea scones- we want the real Irish style flutted scones. Great tip on rubbing between the fingers to get the little “knobs” of butter. “Butter and jam is your only man” lol I pronounce them The way you do. I Cuban so I never grew up eating scones as a child- but when I lived in Chicago we had them with whipped cream jam and butter-
Well here in Australia, for me it's butter, Jam then whipped cream yummo. Although when hot out of the oven I enjoy them with butter & golden syrup mmm
In the most current plague I did discover my family of convicts came from Ireland. So now getting all good irish recipe. I just made some strawberry jams now I gotta make some scones. The proper way. How he does haha s
Late comment, but monks were giving sconfrot (old English word for fine/beautiful bread, where the word scone comes from)with clotted cream and jam as thanks to labourers at Tavistock monastery in Devon in the 11th century,no wonder Devon cream teas are famous!
Butter & jam of course. I've made them twice so far before I found your video. They were delishious but came out like soda bread. They colapsed on me if you know what I mean. Not sure where I went wrong. I did cut them into squares as I did'nt have any cookie cutters (coming in Tuesday). Where am I going wrong?
Donal, I made these last night and it was amazing!!! Though I did substitute the currants with dates but My family loves it. Thank you for the recipe Donal. ✨✨✨
I'm from England and have always pronounced it "scon". I used to rub the butter into the flour with my fingers, but now I use cold butter and a food processor to mix the flour and butter. I think it works a bit better with a bit less effort.
A lovely recipe I shall be using today for a treat ( calorie wise!.) I pronounce them as you do Donal but the Irish love of butter spread on things isn’t in me so I just have jam - I do think cream should go on top of the jam btw.😍
I love this. I also absolutely love that you did everything with your hands like my mom used to. My mom was born and raised in Ireland and she and her sisters came over to America when they were 18 in 1953. she passed when I was 19. I'm adopted but I was raised Irish/Italian so seeing homemade scones makes my mouth water and my heart hurt. Do you ever use caraway seeds? How much would you add for this?
Kiss-Danko Boglarka - you can use plain flour and add baking powder to it, to make it self raising flour. I did that tonight because I had no self raising flour. I make my own baking powder. 2 parts cream of tartar, 1 part bi-carb soda, 1 part cornflour. I made these scones tonight and halved the recipe, I added 2 teaspoons of baking powder for the halved recipe, used sultanas; had no currants and I used heavy cream and lemon juice instead of rubbing in butter - hate that. They rose, browned and have turned out perfectly. Light as a feather. I used 1/2 a teaspoon of salt. The lemon juice added a bit more acid so they rose well. I had them with butter and prune jam I had made - a Finnish friend gave me the recipe. You can find it online. Prune jam may be the nicest jam of all.
I bet Donal was so happy that everyone ‘discovered’ baking during the Pandemic.
Scones are so underrated , I grew up on them as a little girl and I still will make a huge batch of them from in the freezer for when I have guests .
Good morning from Australia 🇦🇺
Scones with a strong O and Irish butter with blackberry jam. Thanks from Oklahoma, USA I’ll be visiting Ireland for the 1sr time April 22, 2023
The scones looks delicious :) Greetings from Scotland! Have a lovely day everyone!🌻🌞
I made these magnificent scones tonight. I had sultanas so used those. Thanks Donal, from Melbourne, AU.
Butter and jam on a fresh scone...yum! I like to have a cup of coffee with that.
its the perfect treat with a warm cup ☕️
I tried scones when I was in Irelan 2013 and still taste it in my mouth 😋😋😋
Jam on the top of butter is the best 🥰🥰
Manal from Saudi Arabia💌
I could eat them plain but a little butter never hurt anyone. They look delicious and easy to make.
Thanks for showing these! In America scones are triangle sweet pastries with icing. These Irish scones are what my grandmother from western Ireland taught her daughters. Donal why do I always watch your videos when I'm starving? they look delicious
Made these scones today best scone I’ve ever made.
I love that you call them scones. I'm from the USA and have to look up some ot the words you use. It's fun learning new foods and words.
Perfect Thanks Donal.A great way to pass a rainy afternoon in Ireland...definitly with Butter and Jam 😀
Thanks Donal. Great advice and great results. The family love them! 😋
Thanks for another beautiful video, appreciate the way you break these down. I've literally tried 80% of all the dishes you've uploaded videos on.
Saw you on the pier in Howth this morning Donal wheeling the pram it was pretty cold... you are related to a first cousin of mine and you are his double love your programmes and videos... can't be easy for you at the present time - take care

I'll try this recipe with Kerrygold butter to make and spread on ❤. Thanks for sharing 😊
As an Irishman abroad, this makes my mouth water. Would love to have with some good Irish butter and jam and obligatory cup of tea!
ah scones are mighty! Why don't you give the recipe a go!!
Yes, a nice cuppa Barry’s Gold!

And do they taste at all? Are they cooked inside? Please answer🙏
@@dunitasbrotton8788 Yes of course!
Lovely! How much flour and baking powder or baking soda should we use if we don’t have self rising flour?
Just made a batch and they are great, yes it worked with mine too. First i i have made for 5 years
Thank you for the recipe and especially for the measurements 👍🙏🏻 it’s good to have both of them no need to convert

Other than serving with cream/clotted cream, is there any other difference between English and Irish scones?

Hi Donal, in my home in Montréal, Québec, Canada, eating scones simply like in Ireland is our way. And we say « scônes », even en français! Slán!
Scones like you do! Definitely want to make these, and eat them the Irish way.
Definitely gotta have Golden Syrup on my scones. It's the best
Love this recipe, Where are your metal cutters from please I cannot see them in your shop

This looks soooo good! 😋
Thanks for the recipe! 💯
I’ll have to try this one! 🙌
Scones, same as you, going to try your way with butter, coming from Devon it's jam first then clotted cream on top, kep baking 😊
Late comment, but monks were giving sconfrot (old English word for fine/beautiful bread, where the word scone comes from)with clotted cream and jam as thanks to labourers at Tavistock monastery in Devon in the 11th century,no wonder Devon cream teas are famous!

Scones with a hard o. These look yummy . Can’t wait to try um. ☘️ 💚

Gemma from Bigger Bolder baking has an almost exact scone recipe. She also says to bake at 180 but she says for 35mins. Why the huge time difference?
Thank you Donal
Thank you, Donal, for ending the ‘Skonn-Skoan’ Debate. Much appreciated 😂
Okay now I have craving. Thanks Donal 🙄
Such a nice recipe!
I didn't have any butter so I used a neural flavour oil (rice bran) and it worked just beautifully.
Donal, I made these last night and it was amazing!!! Though I did substitute the currants with dates but My family loves it. Thank you for the recipe Donal. ✨✨✨
Did you use salted or unSalted butter x
Do I need to adjust the rest of the recipe if I leave out the currants ?
Will definitely make those this weekend. Love!
good idea! Enjoy!
We call them scones. I will be making these very soon. Love your video's, thank you for the recipe.
Down here in NZ we put on jam then cream
Absolutely brilliant.
Mouth watering video, thank you so much

What would your substitute be for the self rising flour? If I just have regular flour
Can you use raisins or dried cranberries or raspberries if you don’t have currents?
of course!
I have been waiting for your scone recipe!!
Mouthwateringly good! Simply DELICIOUS. 😍 The best scones (short „o”) I have ever made. With butter and rhubarb and orange jam. Thank you for this :)
this would be gone easily in a Food processor correct? i've heard the less handling of scones the better.
Just made these I got 12 outta the mix.
D lush….. 100% making them again
Blackcurrant jam n cream.,,, drool
Hey Donal! Love your videos! Just Curious what time is it where you are? Where I am it 9:01am!
Is all purpose ok when no self rising?
