    Shonen and Seinen magazines are just anthology magazines with a large variety of stories , genre and tones.
    The content of a shonen or Seinen manga doesn't depend on the demographic AT ALL , it depends on the decision of the editor. And the difference between shonen and Seinen doesn't reside in in tge content , but the kanji ; Shonen manga having Furigana to help the reader (who's supposed to be in high school and not having completed his kanji study) and the seinen , it's that, the content can be the same , but the level of read changes.
    In fact , One piece could theoreticallyl be transferred to a Seinen magazine next Month and it'd still remain One Piece , it'd be darker or more violent , the Furigana would just be gone.
    The different genre are Horror (like Uzumaki) ,
    action adventure (like Vinland Saga) ,
    Action (like Kingdom) ,
    romance (like Kaguya Sama) ,
    Sport (like Real ) ,
    gourmet (like Dungeon Meshi) ,
    Dark fantasy (like Berserk) ,
    Sci-fi (like Teraformars) ,
    Slice of Life ( K-ON or Chi's Sweet home) ,
    comedy (like Asobi Asobase).
    And to any genre found in a Seinen magazine , it's also found in a Shonen magazine.
    Horror (like Devilman or the drifting classroom) , action adventure (like One Piece) ,
    Action (like Chainsaw man) ,
    Romance (like Nisekoi) ,
    Sport (like Hajime no Ippo) ,
    gourmet (like food wars) , Dark fantasy (like Claymore) ,
    Sci-fi (like Space adventure Cobra ) ,
    Slice of Life (like Yotsuba&) ,
    Comedy (like Nichijou).
    And the cute girl doing cute things genre is predominant in seinen magazines , the business is so big that there's ecen a magazine exclusively serializing Slice of Life (Time Kirara , that serialized K-ON) , something a shonen Magazine couldn't do because they always conserve their diversity.

    And Vinland Saga is a Seinen AND a Shonen (partially) , because it was serialized during the first 6 months in the weekly shonen Magazine before be transferred in the Monthly Afternoon .(this happened tok with JJBA , and it's releasing pressure from authors by switching from weekly schedule to monthly one).
    Meaning that tge first 20 chapters or so sre shonen and the rest is seinen .

    I started monster 5 years ago and after a week of not watching it I revisited it around ep 62-68 and got caught in an episode loop where all I saw was johans sister fainting every 5 minutes, flashbacks and general “Monster” stuff, unable to determine one episode from the next, that plus a weak internet connection caused me to drop the show, I need to finish it though, for completion’s sake.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s barely true. Senien is only grounded depending on the story and all of these stories are serious. They just have a sense of humor to it.
      You seem to have deluded yourself into thinking that stories that are senien are basically humorless and that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
      Berserk and Vagabond are filled to the brim with a ton of humor and jokes but nowhere in there mind would say they are a shonen.
      Being “grounded” isn’t a trait of senien, neither is being humorless.

    We should just stop using those terms to classify stories. BobSamurai explained it 3 years ago, not enough people listened to him th-cam.com/video/688Zvpho1vM/w-d-xo.html

    • @YumesukeSutashika
      @YumesukeSutashika  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do think there is some merit to the terms, but ofc, there are also negatives.
      For example, if I'm looking for a more "mature" or "dark" story, I'm more likely to find it in a seinen. Or if I'm looking for a "battle fantasy", I'm more likely to find it in a shonen.
      But if I'm just looking for a good, well written story regardless of those specific details, then those terms aren't helpful.

    • @frankjaeger2565
      @frankjaeger2565 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@YumesukeSutashika I think that would be the case if we had magazines like the ones in Japan. As it is now there are too many useless and uninformative discussion surrounding the terms in the Western communities, which would be avoided if we just sticked to the original definitions, insteand of inventing nonexistent genres.

But I do agree that the discussion around demographics is commonly misinformed.

  • @The_Ciple
    @The_Ciple 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree for the most part. The only difference between Shonen and Seinen is the demographic. Shonen is geared toward kids and is expected to cover more youthful and basic themes like friendship. Seinin is geared toward Adults so it is expected to have more mature and complex themes. I think seinen is highly regarded because it is allowed to cover themes that shonen can’t. like Sexual violence and drug abuse. Although that doesn’t mean that shonen can’t cover dark themes, some shonen like AOT and Death note get dark to the point that they can be considered seinen. I think shonen is disrespected because the battle genre has so many worn out tropes and flaws. So in that case I would Hunter X Hunter and One Piece as an example of Masterpieces instead of Naruto and bleach because those two really drop of in writing and succumbs to the flaws and tropes as they go on. One piece has perfected the genre and still manages to keep things engaging 1000s chapters later. Hunter X Hunter Subverts and Deconstructs the genre in order to keep things fresh but ultimately returns to the shonen roots. Those two shows prove that shonen can be as masterfully written as seinin while still having shonen aspects.

    • @YumesukeSutashika
      @YumesukeSutashika  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree with the last part. All manga "fall off", same with One Piece and HxH. Since the timeskip, One Piece has been mediocre or worse and the story feels like its dragging.
      Hxh on the other hand also begins to fall off in the Chimera Ant arc in terms of writing. The "deconstruction and subversion" is a misconception in the community. Hxh isnt "different" or "special" by any means. Its good, but the community makes up words to put it on a pedestal.
      BUT, i think all seinen fall off as well, including the 3 seinen i mentioned. All six stories have their highs and lows, but I still consider most of them Masterpieces due to how high their highs get.

      @@YumesukeSutashika I HIGHLY disagree with your statement on One Piece. It's been breaking expectations arc after arc so far. It might drag on in some arcs for weekly readers but when you read it in one go, the pacing is very fast. It's gotten Much much better after timeskip compared to before the timeskip. Also disagree with the HxH statement, it's been very solid so far but the author has been very inconsistent with new issues

      devilman have death, violence, sex, demons and is a shonen, same barefoot gen, drifting clasroom, hapiness are shonen and they have mature stories, is just that if a manga has pubblicated in a shonen magazine even if it have a dark mature story that manga is a shonen. Same for seinen if a manga is more kidless or is like a battle manga ( that' s dosen' t mean they aren' t mature) and it' s pubblicated in a seinen magazine than that manga is a seinen, for exaple one punch man that is a seinen. seinen, shonen, kodomo, shojo, josei aren't genres.

      @@YumesukeSutashika death note
      Doesnt have the depth as much as monster does.
      this is not a seinen shounen thing Idc about that .
      Kira is an intelligent high schooler who found the death note by complete accident and wanted to kill people because he has a god-complex and starts killing people who committed crimes and are put in prison and thinks its purification of the world.
      This thinking is naive in itself since he doesn’t know the circumstances that led to the prisoner committing the crime and a narcissist like him wouldn’t target small-time prisoners in the first place rather would have bigger plans.
      These actions totally contradict the character he was portrayed as (narcissist,intelligent).
      Also everyone in death note except L felt like they are there just as expendable fodder for light.
      In monster Anna liebert ,tenma, johann grimmer and dieter had great depth and felt like individual characters with their own motive not related to the main character.
      And talking about darkness ,i don’t think deaths define how dark the series is.
      Monster had dark concepts such like human experimentation,child experimentation,effects of war .

A lot of people say that seinen have much deeper themes yet disregard shounen that does similar things just because Shounen caters to a younger audience and since seinen tend to have a more older audience and thus regard it as being "deeper". They nitpick so many small details and minor inconsistencies yet don't do that for seinens. Their bias to seinen tends to cloud their judgement. Seinen=Shounen but since Shounen is catered to a younger audience, they show their darker themes in a more subtle context.
