Moreover I would like to extend my condolences to the families who have lost their near and dear ones in this incident.

    Condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones.
    Being an electrical engineer and a person who prepared for RRB, I have my preliminary analysis on why this happened. I would like to say this may be one of the reasons and may not be fully accurate but 80% close.
    Indian Railways operate with 15 different types of anti collision systems and 7 different collision alert systems. Sometimes its not feasible to rely on these machines and hence there are 4 different backup/fault tolerent systems that operate in case of failure to any system. Secondly, we have advanced technology that shows remotely the status and connections of the line and signalling in the computer, so on field person need not be there too. Considering these, primarily we can say this could be human error/negligence.
    My analysis. - The down line was cleared for Coramandel express, but the claims show the signal was green and the interlock was at the loop switch. This is not possible because as the tracks complete the circuit in case of train standing in front and the signal becomes red automatically. Even if the track was diverted to loop line, the signalling is always set accordingly due to electronic mechanism.
    1. However, in this case, there was a mechanical failure in one of the flanges of EIL system, leading to only one flange connecting the main line and other left open which resulted in incomplete circuit and the green was not pushed to red. Even if it didnt complete there are 3 pairs of shunt signals that could have shown line fault, which did show and was overlooked.
    2. In these scenarios, there is an Interlock fault alert, Minimum mean track seperation alert, ground alert that will be generated immediately. If no action is taken, the switch reverses back to its idle position and provides a feedback to its intended position in some 30-35 seconds. If this happens, the circuit will still be complete and the signal will turn to yellow/red. But this did not happen due to interlock system maintainance and the staff thought alerts were from the switch which they were working on the other side of the home signal and not of that of the main line. Reports did show there was multiple alerts and was definitely overlooked due to some confusion.
    3. Indian railways operate with minimum seperation of 5km for 22 coach trains and 6 km for superfast trains, meaning at any point in time, no two trains are closer than 5km on the same track. Trains with 120+ kph are placed atleast 8-9km apart for safety reasons. So even if the fault was detected one or two minutes later, train might have been stopped as the emergency brakes takes roughly 30-35 seconds for 120-0.
    Collectively, the system did perform as per its instructions, but someone got confused or overlooked a minor tiny glitch/mechanical failure leading to loss of 288 lives.
    p s I am not blaming anyone or anything. Just wanted to share some information.
    And also As Satya mentioned, regular inspections are required for high speed tracks due to wear and tear, expansions, and other thermal phenomenons, hope IR takes this seriously from now

      Brilliant analysis. I have one query. Did someone at BNBR do a manual override of the signalling system as the Electronic Interlocking was under maintenance without setting the points correctly. Because this happened at Hosadurga Road on Feb 9th with the 12649 Karnataka Sampark Kranti. That time the train was given a green after being stationary in broad daylight and the LP was alert that he was going in the wrong track.
      Unfortunately, the Coromandel Express had no such luck hurtling down at ~130 kph, not to mention the loop turnout at BNBR was a low radius one, i.e., less bend. Thus, the train even at 130 kph comfortably negotiated the crossover point and rammed into the goods train at full speed.
      I think the statement of the BCCN Goods Train guard here is crucial. Was he able to see something suspicious near point 17A of BNBR before the ill-fated Coromandel Express crashed into the goods train.
      Whatever it is, I am clear on one thing. We should not be losing 288 lives in a train accident in India in 2023, nearly 30 years since the 1995 Firozabad accident.

      My father is currently the DSS OF Khurdha Jn....and shared a similar opinion...it was the interlocking failure plus The loop switch was on and station master most probably missed the 30-35 secs window..By then...Coromandel was already on spot

      @@soumiran10 IMO, manual override would have worked, if they did set...Report was that alerts came upto 8 times. So may be manual override was not triggered. All are still vague... Should see the probe

    A huge respect for our well educated railway minister. I think there is no minister like Ashwani sir. In past there are not well educated minister are there.

      You said right but this is the responsibility of the railway minister to look whatever the matter in railway.
      My friend father is loco piot in railway; he has duty of more than 15 year in day. Think about a person who run a train 15 hour daily how it impact badly on his mental condition.
      There is huge shortage of staff in the railway, what kind of work has been done to get recruited in the railway.
      Group C and Group D in recruitment is still pending from 2 year.
      Recurinment of Group A by UPSC is still pending. In 2020 they took exam for Group A and then cancel all the vacancy after taking exam. Just think about that student who work hard to get into railway for Group A,C,D services.
      Any minister cannot be judge only by his degree. This is not correct if he has degree from IIT and an IAS that means he is also a good minister.
      In our country the 90% of railway is been operated by Group C and Group D service employee indirectly. But as this not a gazzeted post no one come forward to talk about that employee. If there is shortage of gateman, trackman, etc. then this incident may happen in near future also.

      Bullshit ignored the report on electronic signalling back in Feb'23 . Just coming there and doing a photoshoot doesn't respect the people who died. No action was taken that resulted in this situation. I don't think you would say the same when your loved ones died in the accident even after it was alerted long ago

      Are you sure no action was taken? Cause electronic signalling overhaul takes years. From past 70years no govt have given emphasise on advanced technology in railway system, which changed 9 years ago.
      In 9 years what do you expect? Fully auto signalling in every part of india? That is still not the case in many advanced railway. This was clearly a point signal mismatch which is rarest of rare case in Indian interlocking history. And about acting, yep 50 hours of acting continuously is tough too, which earlier rail minister did that?

      He is the least capable railway minister til date because he has done nothing commendable apart from solving few minor problems through twitter and inaugurating few Vande Bharat trains till now.
      out of 13,242 locomotives only 67 has been installed with ACD radio modems and GPS components because railway is spending its all surplus budget to the new Vandebharat trains and common trains with common people are out of the scope nowdays.
      Railway safety and other technical related 3 lakh 12 thousand posts are still vacant in Indian railways which is impacting present working staff very badly.
      Along with loco pilot, other rail staff are working for over 12 to 14 hours daily
      There has not been a single new permanent recruitment in the Railways for the last two years.
      The CAG 2022 report states that track and signal interconnections have not been properly maintained on a regular basis on all routes due to inadequate staffing and budget.
      Even I must say that the first railway minister Suresh Prabhu was more productive than this intelligent and talented man as he had a habit of raising security concerns but he had to resign on moral grounds for a similar train accident.

    Satya bhai you are saying absolutely right Indian Railway which was not perfect for its work it is today it is difficult to explain to those people who see everything in this country by adding politics everyone is saddened by this accident Has reached that's why I am with those families who have lost their relatives in this accident and in this time of sorrow we need to assure people and not to find their shortcomings. 😢😢

    Very sad to hear about his accident, my prayers is with the family. Ashwini ji has done great work and I am very satisfied with the relief work. We need to look into the fact if there is any possibility of sabotage or act of violence, hoping CBI will look into it very carefully.

    Good analysis and we share the grief. Couple of points I would mention:
    1. Mr Vaishnav is undoubtedly the best, well informed and highly educated RM so far.
    2. Due to his position obviously he had to follow what PM says, or what PM asks for
    3. In my view, as told by you too -
    "Accident had already happened and someone has to be responsible".
    So who do you think, should take responsibility of ?
    1) More than 275+ deaths
    2) 500+ wounded passengers
    3) Loss of railway properties worth Crores
    4) Loss of time of those passengers whose trains were diverted or cancelled for at least 4-5 days
    5) Loss of timely goods delivery
    6) Officials, Relief workers who worked overnight and days but might have developed fatigue
    7) Brand Image of Railways
    Answer could be:
    - Station staff ?
    - Gangmen / pointmen ?
    - Any civilian who might have done something criminal ?
    - Senior technical staff at division ?
    - Senior management staff at zone ?
    - Board Member(s) ?
    - RM ?
    - PM ?
    - God as this could be an ACT OF GOD, and none can be punished
    Please try to understand, I am not against any party or leadership but someone must be responsible for loss of lives atleast. Right questions should be asked especially about accident reasons, and in the same way correct information must be supplied by govt so that in future lives can be saved.
    My prayers for all who lost / got injured in the accident.

      He is the least capable railway minister til date because he has done nothing commendable apart from solving few minor problems through twitter and inaugurating few Vande Bharat trains till now
      we have near about 68,043 km of railway route network in our country and only 1427 km railway route has been equipped with ACD system till date becoz after 2019 not a single KM has been added to this which is only 2% of the whole.
      out of 13,242 locomotives only 67 has been installed with ACD radio modems and GPS components because railway is spending its all surplus budget to the new Vandebharat trains and common trains with common people are out of the scope nowdays.
      Railway safety and other technical related 3 lakh 12 thousand posts are still vacant in Indian railways which is impacting present working staff very badly.
      Along with loco pilot, other rail staff are working for over 12 to 14 hours daily
      There has not been a single new permanent recruitment in the Railways for the last two years.
      The CAG 2022 report states that track and signal interconnections have not been properly maintained on a regular basis on all routes due to inadequate staffing and budget.
      Even I must say that the first railway minister Suresh Prabhu was more productive than this intelligent and talented man as he had a habit of raising security concerns but he had to resign on moral grounds for a similar train accident.
      Well, may be this all is not precise with all other people, but this is my thought about the current railway minister.

      @@prakashmax17 I am not sure if you could really feel the pain behind my comments. I had praised his knowledge and education but not about his performance. You are right, running Vande Bharat is not his achievement but it's the entire railway staff and not to forget Sudhanshu Mani and his team who developed behind the scenes. He is often seen as a shadow to the prime minister which our PM likes anyway.
      A minister has stayed for 40+ hrs at the accident site? Why 'coz when the media comes they will find him busy in giving instructions to officers but in reality he was there to save the face of the govt. Earlier too, railway officers have been capable of managing things without a minister not being at the accident site, then what difference had he made? As an accident had already taken place so in reality, it was not a great show demonstrated by him. What happened now, when at least 4 small accidents have taken place after the coromandal accident? Did respected RM go anywhere? They could have been equally technically complex but just that number of lives were not compromised there (god's grace).
      CAG report clearly shows the lackluster performance in the area of safety but govt didn't bring any of the points to the public, while the same CAG report in 2012 was used as a political tool.
      As I said, I am not a political person but parity must be maintained by the current govt too. Mr Vaishnav is by far the best so far (Mr Prabhu was one too, thanks for reminding) in terms of knowledge, wisdom and future vision but he must take the whole accountability of the accident. I do know, resignation is not the solution as things have already taken place but coming out with guts in the public will make him a more acceptable and courageous leader than sitting in the shadow of PM.

    Train Pehle derail nhi hui hai.... Because derailment of train mai kabhi locomotive nhi Girta wo nikal jata h derailment wala factor nikal degeye

      Exactly...most probably track change nahi kiya gaya tha...main line ko loop line se hi connected chhor diya gaya tha...yahi pe cheezein fishy lag rahi hai...thatswhy CBI ko handover kar diya ye case...

    Satya..point is: First invest on safety and health of tracks and signals. How inspection will happen when there are so many trains.
    No one questioning VBs... Point is why not improve health first. Example: Rly planning VB for suburbs. Pehley hii its jam pack track n schedule.... First release space...then introduce new suburban train

    क्या आपलोगो को नही लगता भारतीय रेल में काफी सुधार की जरूरत है, आपलोग तो इतना यात्रा करते हो देख रहे होंगे,mail/exp की क्या हालत है, कितने मजबूरी में लोग यात्रा कर रहे हैं। Tracks, signals की क्या हालत है, ये सब कमी ही दुर्घटनाओं का कारण बनती है। सरकार को पहले इसपे काम करना चहिए।

    Satya Bhai Vande Bharat bhi aur speed se chalengi agar track upgradation or better signalling ho jayegi toh. Overall Vande Bharat average speed is not even near triple digits.
    No oppose to Vande Bharat but track upgradation & robust signalling system should be the main first priority of Railways.
    Railway recruitment is a must now. Bhai follow up on this as well with railway ministry.

    Heart reaches out to the families of the deceased. Irony is the majority of people who lost their lives were in general compartments and we know the condition of these compartments. It's a living hell. They are generally overloaded at least 3 times its capacity. Govt needs to look into this aspect seriously. Basically, India travels this way.
