This is so interesting. I definitely will be watching the full lecture. On a side note when I was learning Quran as a child in the mosque it was all about Allah SWT wrath and punishment. It was all based on fear. It’s only as an adult and now a mother teaching my children that I realise Allah SWT mercy and kindness. This is what I am teaching my children first and foremost. Loved this lecture. Jzk brother Paul and Bassam. 🤲🏽
I was raised Catholic and from my memory, the priest was always talking about hell ( screaming "there is a hell" ) Like you, I prefer to seek the "mercy and kindness" of God. It sounds like you are teaching your children in a good and loving way. Peace
Fear is the greatest motivator tbh. 99.9% of us serve Allah Ar-Razzaq out of fear for various things(health, work, relationship, home, etc.) We know that he can take it all away from us if we disobey/go against him. Now I'm not saying you cannot serve Allah Azawajal out of love. Not saying that. However...that is very difficult because we don't actually, physically experience miracles(in the traditional sense) but we most definitely experience things like depression, cancer, etc...so it's much easier to serve Allah out of fear because we simply experience pain a lot more than we do pleasure. Nonetheless, this life is simply a test and Inshallah we will all enter Jannah. BarakAllahu Feek

@@Wabbelpaddel There is free will in things you can choose and not free will in other things, you committed a fallacy called black and white fallacy that claims there is only two options to a matter. @@johnbrzykcy3076 The concept of eternal hell used to confuse me too sometimes. But when there's something I don't understand, I usually leave the topic. "God knows best," I say to myself. Later on (sometimes a few weeks, sometimes a few months, or sometimes in a few year's time) I do understand exactly why God decreed something that used to confuse me. It's because, when we learn more about religion, history, and the world in general, we increase in knowledge. And when we increase in knowledge we understand religion more. Sometimes, we don't find the answer to our questions and confusions straight away - sometimes God tests us with such things, to see if we'll trust Him or not. God knows best! Peace be with you!
After seeing the horrors that have been going about in the world for as long as humans have existed, I have no problem in believing that God will punish some people with everlasting hell fire. However, we need to look deeper into what the Qur'an actually says. Allah put each letter in the Qur'an for a reason, so we have to take the time to decode what He meant.
This is so much needed. I need to rewatch again slowly and make notes. Excellent podcast Paul. Thank you so much to both of you. This is truly a gem to learn about this topic in this blessed month Ramadan. May Allah rewards you both abudantly.

I always found it strange hearing Muslim apologists REASSURE to non Muslims not to worry about hell...as if they didn't want to hurt the feelings of NON BELIEVERS????. I'm mean if they didn't believe in God or of another religion why would they care and why would you WANT them to care.... firstly let's them choose to believe in Islam. then let them ponder on the aspects of their existence and the outcome of their choices that would eventually lead them to heaven or hell

Very informative lecture. Thank you for the great content Paul. I would say within the Bangladeshi Muslim community, hell is mentioned a lot but not with a lot of detail. I would say judgement day and heaven are mentioned more than hell in Khutbas
I think this is so unlike in Pakistan. Here mostly khateeb and molvis talk about hell in detail rather heaven. My fav is Dr. Israr Ahmed and Engineer Ali Mirza. They are so direct no-nonsense n upto the point.
Allahu Akbar, this is a very serious issue. As an adult with sound mentality it is very important for me to do whatever I can to safeguard myself from the hellfire. Allah save us from the hell. Aameen.
An area of interest for me personally as a muslim lawyer. We are taught that punishment has to be proportionate to the crime. Temporary crime has always been assocoated in my mind with a temporary punishment. So this is an area of real interest for me. Its always been my understanding that god only unleaches the misery of hell on those responsible for the spreading of the ignorance rather than on those who know no better. Only a third of the way through, interested to hear the rest if my 3 year old permits me to of course. Thank you for the interesting topics. Your efforts will be rewarded in sha allah.

The issue of Hell is always in the sermons of our Imams. The verses that mentioned Allah's mercy followed by stark warning of the severity of His punishment are often quoted to keep in check those with tendencies of relaxing because of the abundance of His mercy and forgetting the other aspect.
@@philipcoriolis6614 Yes, He is the source of mercy and the most just. Among His beautiful names is Al-Adl meaning the Just. And Ar-Raheem meaning the most Merciful. Best response to Problem of Hell. Most Muslim scholars, students of knowledge and others make weak rational arguments in support of eternal hell for kufr/shirk. This one seems very strong despite me not having completely watched the video just yet.
@@Wabbelpaddel lol, well you can be in denial all you want. I am very happy that Allah talks about Hell in the Quran because I need to know so I can act accordingly. It will be a disservice to me if I’m only told about rewards and not punishments. Some of my actions are because I want the reward, but other actions are because I want to avoid punishment. Either way I need to know exactly what’s going to happen so I can plan my actions right. This was an exceptional presentation full with information. And the way the Quran verses are hitting is just mind blowing. My favourite has to be 44:23
Jazakallah khairan! Such a cogent and articulate presentation. Worthy of the research that was evidently done on the topic. Enjoyed this episode immensely.
On Atheistic videos , I see in the comment section the arrogant who says that they will prefer to go to hell than believing/worshiping in God that will judge them in the hereafter for disbelieve. Nah there are people who will choose Hell directly. The amount of human arrogance can be so much above any roof.
Halfway through and verses in the Quran are connecting like dots in ways I just now realized. Spiritual treason is a accurate way to describe it. We took the trust and now need to fulfill our purpose. Also liked the argument for indirect control of belief, it's about caring and not making up excuses to not care and seek knowledge. How many times does Allah say not to just follow family? It's so illogical yet people roll with it as if they are making sense. Same goes for only studying the religion you grew up with, who said your birth dictates truth?
Quran 2:85: "..So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allāh is not unaware of what you do."

a counterargument for this is very simple argument: why does God punish me for eternity for this small sin counterargument: why does God REWARD me for eternity for doing this small act of goodness?
A man glared at me the other day so I tortured and kill him. Why did I do that? Well because the other day another man smiled at me and I gave him million pounds. Makes sense right 🤥
At 1:06:17, when brother Bassam speaks about sincere seeking of truth and dying in this path for a non believer, there's maybe the hadith of a man who has killed 99 people. In a way, he was seeking Truth too.
It's ironic that he mentions Ibn Taymiyyah @44:23. Whatever the failings of that particular scholar, Ibn Taymiyyah did not believe in an everlasting hell. Secondly, Zawadi's argument falls short. The exegesis he presents makes God's mercy, ultimately, subordinate to His sense of justice. By his own suppositions and sources, that is not the case in the Quran and most of the Hadith.Mercy reigns supreme for believer and non-believer alike in a final analysis hence the conclusion of Ibn Taymiyyah among other scholars, e.g., Ibn Arabi. Still, one could argue from an orthodox perspective, that God's mercy must not be made so explicit for fear of something akin to antinomianism amongst Muslims. Otherwise, it's a conclusion that fails the logical rigors, especially when confined to apologetics. As is often the case, Muslims, like so many other people of faith, abide by a veritable point system where they hope to tally enough good deeds to escape punishment. What they fail to realize is that the punishment itself is an abiding act of mercy to orient believers and non-believers alike. The straight path is the easiest path because the path of sin and dissolution remains an exhausting labyrinth. However, God Almighty finds us though even in the darkest of dark because His forgiveness and mercy remains an open invitation in this life and the next.
As a non Muslim I’m curious on your thoughts on the views of scholars like Ibn Taymiya who thought hell would one day end? Or the minority view of universal reconciliation
Totally agree. God explicitly describes hellfire dwellers as those who dispair from his mercy . There multiple hadiths as well about people going to paradise when they've commited so many sins in this life just because they truly believed in God's mercy and they begged for it humbly. There is also many mentions in the Quran that the arrogant are those who will be punished . A hafith qudsi also mentions that God will be how the servant imagines him to be so if he thinks God will have mercy on him He will and if he thinks he's going to show him only wrath and punishment, it will come to pass. SubhanaAllah
@@bouchagu4009 Those things could very well be true but don't forget that Allah Al-MU'IN can still send people to hell for a short period of time and then take them out. I would not hedge all my bets on simply pleading on the day of judgement. Do the best you can because you never really know. BarakAllahu Feek ☪️
once you see videos of palestinians, poor indian muslms, uyghurs, yemenis, iraqis under US, bosnians, you will come to know automatically why hell is eternal
I would like to see the discussions and descriptions of the living and forgiving God . Christian priests ( some of them ) lie through their teeth as usual and say there is nothing like a living God mentioned in Quran . Surah Burroj mentions it and at many other places it is mentioned . That is what we need to propagate , that is is the loving God , the forgiving God . How he repeatedly shows us how to expiate sins, one example ; good deeds annul evil deeds. Or the freeing of slaves or the feeding of the poor or supporting of orphans or helping the traveller etc etc etc .
The Right of Allah to be obeyed and worshiped (not one or the other but BOTH) is founded on the Fact that Allah is the All Powerful. For those stubborn, addicted people who refuse Him this Right should prepare to face His wrath after death. There the lies will become manifestly clear and their intercessors will be of no use. They would have wasted this opportunity to pass the Test and their closed mindednrss, addiction to this world and Ego will lead them into hell. May Allah protect us in a safe haven from such evil people. I even prayed for this during my exams when foolish time-wasting classmates would cause distraction and teacher had to separate them to allow others their free will. Thankfully under Capitalism too we are realizing there is no free choice like it claimed and we are all slaves to it's bankers and corporations who are destroying the people and environment whether you like it or not. This passive aggression albeit unseen to masses but to those who are wise can connect the dots. My only solution to wake the masses is give ALL the money to 1 person (Bezos, musk, Buffett, gates, Putin, drumph) and drop everyone else below the poverty line and then wait a Moses. LoL.
Claiming mental gymnastics and a punishment being sadistic are both subjective claims. It is your opinion. I think a educated individual would know not to type this since it lacks any objective evidence. I guess you didn't think it through...
@@mohamudahmed6554 I used to be like you, hope you find the courage to question freely and bypass the mental enslavement you were indoctrinated into from birth.
@@SomaliFrank You were never like me. I don't post lies and baseless opinions and act as if they are facts. This is intellectual and something uneducated people do. So do me a favour and bring the evidence for your claims. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burden_of_proof_(philosophy)
I am just wondering: What about those who outwardly seem sincere and say „What do we all know anyway?“ I think of individuals like Jordan Peterson who appear so humble that they fail to take the final step towards embracing objective truth because they insist on knowing we can’t 100% know anything and he views people like us who believe in Islam being 100% true as arrogant. But they still do not opt for moral relativism.
When all is said and done you have to understand God alone is the all knowledgeable so when he reveals his attributes which include the most just then know you will never be wronged. Those that are thrown in hell will truly deserve it as God is not unjust it's our minds that are lacking knowledge to understand the reasoning.
God is not unjust but it is beyond our comprehension. We, being weak creation, and also who are now in a test, should only pray for Him being Merciful to us, and to all. بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیمم۔
It is sickening to hear over and over again that allah tests us again and again. Is it for this reason that he created an imperfect world? If something good happens it is allah, and if it is something bad (covid, earthquake, "islamophobia", sickness, congenital defects....) allah is testing oe it is satan. And if we humans fail, or if we do not believe in him, he sends us eventually to hell for eternity. The narcissistic allah seems to find great sadistic pleasure in inflicting suffering on his creation. As test, for the admission in paradise, the believers has to worship thw narcissistic allah, who, it is said by allah himself, created mankind precisely for this purpose only..
@@AS-jj4dv You've missed the crucial point it doesn't matter what you think of god. You'll never be all knowledgeable. You just need the answer to one question does God exist? If yes then do as your told if no then why do you care what he tells you to do.
@@gamingfactory150 I am critical because of the (potential) harm religion can do, especially islam, such as death penalty for apostate, inequal treatment of women, etc. and because of the arrogance of islam by the books which display a superiority complex with regards to other religions, etc. In my opinion, all religions are false, but some have less and others more negative consequences for the believers and society. The biggest problem is that muslims cannot interpret the scriptures in moral, positive, and modern ways, because it is the word of god (which is of course for me total nonsense).
For me hell used to be a major problem. The way I understand it now is as a form of distance vs. proximity to God's Mercy, and not necessarily as a literal fire. Nar (fire) and Nur (light) come from the same etymological root. A candle can burn you but it can bring light also; so I think the afterlife is a continuation of consciousness (I don't know if I believe I will be resurrected with this body or not, I doubt it to be necessary) and any description we have about the Akhirah in this life is just so that our imagination can form a general concept of what we might expect.
Wow.... I really like how you understand "hell" as "a form of distance vs. proximity to God's Mercy, and not necessarily as a literal fire." I'm a Christian believer but I agree with your interpretation/understanding because it makes more sense. Thanks for sharing and Peace of God to you....
Your comment makes me realise I will never have the Quran’s true all encompassing meaning without a complete understanding of Classical Arabic. There will always be some jewel I will look over, I intend to learn Arabic as life goes on.
@@johnbrzykcy3076 This is how the Sufis (Islamic Mystics) understand it as well. There has always been esoteric interpretations in Islam and traditional Islam acknowledges that there's hidden meanings as well. May the Peace of God be with you too.
@@BloggingTheology Unfortunately, the one who advocates slavery and capital punishment of apostate; in good company with the gas chamber advocate shabbir akhtar, another friendly humanist guest of Paul.
I don’t like the word apologist. I know what it means but it containing the same root as apologetic just makes me not like using the word for describing someone who argues for a noble thing such as islam. I’d rather just say “defender of islam.” But ya I completely agree with you 😝
Hell is glamorous on the outside, just like fire is. The glow of Hell is attractive, like a moth is attracted to the glow of fire. Allah mentions that He has surrounded Hell with ease, and surrounded Heaven with hardships. In other words, the door of Hell is Heaven, and the door of Heaven is Hell. Thus, we choose Hell when we choose cancer, because its door was Heavenly (ex., the pleasure of smoking or drinking). We choose Heaven when we choose health, because its door was Hellish (ex., the pain of going to the gym). Therefore, Hell is instant gratification, while Heaven is delayed gratification. It is our daily habits that speak to whether we become like a moth, taken away by superficial glamor, or not.
Dogs and cats can be members of the family and treated extremely well infact it is the sunnah and expected of Muslims to treat animals well, there are countless hadith on this, paul.
Muhammad hated dogs and said they are unclean and not to let them in the house, but he said cats are sweet and if he needed a blanket that a cat was sleeping on he would not disturb the sleeping cat to get the blanket. so clearly Muhammad was a cat person.

Peace
Perhaps the correct way is teach what the quran teaches.
It usually mentions punishment and reward together.
Always balanced.
Have a balance instead of leaning on 1 side, Allah knows best

Either there is free will or isnt.
If there is, by definition something must happen that is not in allahs knowledge scope.
If there isn't, allah creates people to be tortured without saving, and you need not define what "cruel" is or any of these metamoral mental gymnastics bollocks, that IS cruel.
@@Wabbelpaddel There is free will in things you can choose and not free will in other things, you committed a fallacy called black and white fallacy that claims there is only two options to a matter. Truth is whether you are born black or hvite this you had no free will in nor location you were born nor what parents you are born with. All of this you have no free will in or control over. Lets say you have a choice to either go to a mosque or go to a club then in this case you had free will to choose then Allah rewards you or punishes you based on this choice. Later on (sometimes a few weeks, sometimes a few months, or sometimes in a few year's time) I do understand exactly why God decreed something that used to confuse me. one of the last points about people wanting hell for themselves- naudhubillah- is given new light after Elon Musk's tweet
And Allāh is not unaware of what you do."

a counterargument for this is very simple
argument: why does God punish me for eternity for this small sin
counterargument: why does God REWARD me for eternity for doing this small act of goodness?
A man glared at me the other day so I tortured and kill him. Why did I do that? Well because the other day another man smiled at me and I gave him million pounds. Makes sense right 🤥
At 1:06:17, when brother Bassam speaks about sincere seeking of truth and dying in this path for a non believer, there's maybe the hadith of a man who has killed 99 people. In a way, he was seeking Truth too.
Allah is not unjust to people... People are unjust to themselves!😊
Sir,most merciful and existence of hell are contradictory aspects.
As a non Muslim I’m curious on your thoughts on the views of scholars like Ibn Taymiya who thought hell would one day end? Or the minority view of universal reconciliation
No one goes to Hell unless they are convinced that they deserve it on the day of Judgment. Allah is the most merciful but also the most just.
Do the best you can because you never really know.

once you see videos of palestinians, poor indian muslms, uyghurs, yemenis, iraqis under US, bosnians, you will come to know automatically why hell is eternal
Alhamdulillah :)

Hell has cool parts that is in fact manageable.. It's cool enough to not actually harm..Everlasting and Eternal
One could expand on these ideas even more because if you read the Qur'an through this lens, you find wonderful stuff. But I tried to explain it in a nutshell. I'm glad it makes sense for you. May the Peace of God be with you too.

Is this the same Bassam who used to hang out on the ahlalhdeeth forum?
Bassam is one of the most underrated Muslim apologists.
I like his reasoning and the way he speaks English.
@@johnbrzykcy3076 He is exceptionally intelligent.

I don’t like the word apologist. I know what it means but it containing the same root as apologetic just makes me not like using the word for describing someone who argues for a noble thing such as islam. I’d rather just say “defender of islam.” But ya I completely agree with you 😝
Not sure what's not to like about "a formal written defense of one's opinions or conduct."
I’m not seeing this argument at all
Hell is glamorous on the outside, just like fire is. It is our daily habits that speak to whether we become like a moth, taken away by superficial glamor, or not.
are you a convert tony????
Dogs and cats can be members of the family and treated extremely well infact it is the sunnah and expected of Muslims to treat animals well, there are countless hadith on this, paul.
Muhammad hated dogs and said they are unclean and not to let them in the house, but he said cats are sweet and if he needed a blanket that a cat was sleeping on he would not disturb the sleeping cat to get the blanket. so clearly Muhammad was a cat person.
