Vetiver done right is quite a feat: it’s always a delicate balancing act. I think there are only a handful of supporting notes that really make vetiver shine without outperforming it: citrus, iodine, tobacco, pepper, and moss. I have worn vetiver-forward fragrances for decades, and though I dislike most presented under that rubric, I do love these: Vetyver - CARVEN (1957 - the original and second-best); Vetiver - GUERLAIN (1959 - an unassailable masterpiece in all its iterations); Vetyver - GIVENCHY (1959 - serene and gentlemanly); Vétiver - ANNICK GOUTAL (1985 - salty, oceanic; sadly discontinued: a travesty); Grey Vetiver - TOM FORD (edp: 2009; edt: 2014? - suave, resolutely modern). Great video as always, ‘Persolaise’! --- You’re a teacher! A have great respect for teachers (I’d better: my wife is one 🙂); if I may ask, what do you teach?

Persolaise Perfumes - It shows: you have a remarkable command of the language! I’m an archaeologist with an interest in ancient organics, particularly wine and perfume production and trade between Greece, Egypt, the wider Eastern Mediterranean, the Near East and the Persian empire (that’s how my fascination with the history of perfumery in general developed). Thank you for the kind response.

I love vetiver and own several vetiver scents: Vetiver Fatale, Saab Essence #6 Vetiver, Vetiver Oriental, Vetiver Tonka, Encre Noire Extreme, and the original Encre Noire, I’ve also sampled many others that I don’t own. I enjoy them all on different days and in different moods but, If I had to give them all up and pick just one to keep it would be no contest, I’d hold on to Encre Noire. For me it is the quintessential vetiver.

Vetiver Carven, an oldie with a charm, Original Vetiver Creed, Vetiver Geranium Creed. Vetiver Fatal Atelier Cologne. Vetiver Mizenzir.
The Different Company is a master of mixing vetiver with flowers. i mean Sel de Vetiver and Rose Poivree. The last is critically close to Guerlain's Vetiver, like the same feminized out.

Vetiver may be my favorite note. Currently, I’m in live with the Vetyver by Chantecaille. Encre Noire pour Elle by Lalique is so different…it’s more of a floral rosy perfume. The others are wonderful . I love the Vetiver salubrious vibes.
I can’t wait to try the Marie Jeanne potion.
    Sycomore is -oh soooo good.
I often regret missing the live, but have enjoyed this video so much!!! Thanks!

I hope I am not risking being banned from the channel.....;-)...by mentioning Brummel. It is one of the survivors of classic Spanish perfumery. Originally produced by Puig, now made by De Ruy. A strong fougère with lots of character for genltlemen. To my nose besides the citrus and sage notes it is mainly earthy and in a cool way smoky green Vetiver . A young Rosendo Mateu participated in its composition. And of course it has been reformulated. Apparently it used to be much more intense and lasting.

I'm totally with Madam P concerning vetiver and grapefruit! I detest them when they are prominent. Both 'sweaty' for me. I wonder if vetiver is used in a lot of perfumes for that reason - it blends with body odour, and makes it slightly more 'pleasant' or bearable?

I actually like creeds original vetiver ( i know you hate it lol) and rojas vetiver parfum (not the parfum cologne which is pants as rich mich would say) but my favorite vetivers are bel ami vetiver, encre noire al extreme & nishane sultan vetiver. But to be honest i like vetiver more as a supporting note rather than the main player. For example what duchafour did with Timbuktu.. vetiver is used and quite prominently but not the star of the show. Cheers 🍻

I finally found someone who feels exactly like me about vetiver: love the opening, but I'm disgusted by the drydown. I don't make the association with onions though, rather it smells of urine to me. Not the stale, rancid oudor you smell in an underpass, but a warm, fresh-out-the bladder urine smell. This bad smell lingers especially on clothes and I sometimes I can still smell it after washing them. Most people don't even seem to notice this smell, but I'm very sensitive to it. Some vetivers are more smelly than other, Guerlain's and Encre Noir being the worst I had in my collection - and I still don'tget how the latter is constantly pushed as a safe blind buy by reciewers. It's slightly better with Vetiver Extraordinair (but I have to watch thise sprays) and I normally haave no problem with Diptyque's Vetiveryo (both edt and edp).
At the same time, vetiver is my favourite player in some perfumes. For example, the moment when vetiver starts shining throught is the phase I enjoy the most of Dior Homme Original... go figure!

Isabelle Doyen did a series of Turtle Vetiver fragrances about 10 years ago. I got hold of sample of one of them, I think it was Exercise No. 2, and it was pure swamp water. It may have been a bad sample, it disappeared before could get a bottle.

Hi Persolaise, second time watching this video, I can say I came for the note, stayed for the shirt! :) I reasearched Marie-Jeanne online and their cologne are indeed approchable from a price point of view, but what I also found interesting is that as they list the notes, they mention the countries of production too and you don't often see that. It made me think of your current Masterclass on ingredient series with Rémi from Les Indémodables. So it is full circle now, I knew I had a reason to re-watch!

Hello Persolaise, thank you so much for this lovely video! I love Vétiver. Let me rephrase......I LOVE VETIVER! It is my absolute favorite note in perfumery, followed by lavender.....I fell under the spell of vetiver when I got a sample of Guerlain Vetiver with a bottle of Habit Rouge I got somewhere in the early 80's. I loved it so much that I ended up giving my Habit Rouge away to get the magical Vetiver instead!
The Guerlain has been tamed quite a lot since the late 1990's and I can't bring myself to wear its current formulation. Luckily there are plenty of excellent alternatives out there, many of which you've mentioned. My personal favorites however are by Maître Parfumeur et Gantier : Racine and La Route du Vetiver. The first being a Terre d'Hermes avant la lettre, the second being a Sycamore avant la lettre. So original and such quality.....
No boiled onions on my wrist, just the earthy, mineral, grassy, peppery greenness that I just can't get enough of......the note always captivates me, and more importantly, makes me feel happy and elegant.
    Keep up your excellent work!

Hehehehe, I'm sure it's still a great fragrance, Guerlain is doing a much better job with their reformulations I think. It's just that it's lost a lot of its depth and that raspy, peppery sting right underneath the top notes....
And may I add that you wear the perfect vétiver shirt for this video?

It is true! Vetiver is very popular here in South América. But I do have a small problem with vetiver in perfumes, as the scent of its dried roots seems to always be better than vetiver fragrances (at least só far). Around here we all had small bundles of its roots, tied with a piece of string, in our clothes drawers

I like thet dark inky asoect of encre noire but it turns to quick into that pencil shaving smell.
One great vetiver i came across is Vetyver from Le Galion. Give that one a try! 😉
I think blending vetiver with slightly fruity or floral notes its please t.
I blind bought vetiver extreme but that tobacco ans frankinsense makes it unwearable for me.
I think i like it fresher but without that swampy asoect most scents seem not to have the best longavity

Why is the industry still insisting on gendered fragrance names 🙄 I've worn men's fragrances since I was a teen because I prefer woodsy leathery frags and options were limited for melenial women who didn't want to smell like haribos!!. The number of sales clerks that tried to talk me out of it was infuriating!! It's a bit better now but only because I'm older and they probably think I'm buying it for a man 🙄

I feel like if you've seen one top ten vetiver, you've seen them all. Sultan Vetiver is the only vetiver that smells more than just grass, to my nose at least. I'm wearing Roja Vetiver Cologne and it smells like hotel soap if hotel soap cost 300$ :(

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Vetiver is a very dominating note, so if it plays a major role in a scent, it tends to be the main thing you can smell, which is precisely why so many vetiver-heavy scents tend to be similar to each other.

I did some googling couldnt find anything about plantations. But I found a lot about vetiver being used as a solution against erosion!!!! And traditionally people in the North states such as Pará and Amazônia have vetiver in their yards or just pick it up in the forest, to use the roots for perfumation. There are many small, local perfume houses in the North that use vetiver a lot. Funnily, there is a name confusion as locals call vetiver "patchouli"!

Late to the party as always and I will not be kind as I am a VETIVER fanatic!!! This time around Mr. Persolaise I could sense your discomfort with a note you don't like ;-) Guerlain and Tom Ford IMO are generic and outdated, no imagination in today's world. I would like to share with you all my 10 favorite vetiver fragrances and I believe we share only one from your list (#8). I mention the perfume name/house name/concentration/year of release/description/price in MSRP. All descriptions are based on my personal olfactory perception. They are listed in chronological order of release year (latest first):
    1. Vetu de Vert (Motif Olfactif) Extrait/2019: Greenest vetiver, bright and uplifting, done by Mr. Oz who is reviewer/perfumer- $95 for 50 ml (previous sale price- $1.9 per ml)
    2. Mon Vetiver (Essential Parfums) EDP/2018: Hidden gem, classy vetiver, hidden gem, super classy- $75 for 100ml ($0.75 per ml)
    3. Vetiver Insolent (Miller Harris) EDP/2016: Sweet vetiver, to me perfectly honeyed but not cloying, another hidden gem, cheaper at discounters- $154 for 100 ml ($1.54 per ml)
    4. Vetiver Royal Bourbon (Oriza Legrand) EDP/2014: Boozy vetiver, super elegant, vintage vibe but not outdated- $125 for 100 ml ($1.25 per ml)
    5. Vetiver Veritas (Heeley) EDP/2014: Photorealistic vetiver, beautiful- $195 for 50 ml ($3.9 per ml)
    6. Bond-T (Sammarco) Extrait/2013: Chocolaty vetiver, awesome cacao-infused vetiver with mazing spice, masterpiece to me- $150 for 30 ml ($3 per ml)
    7. Sultan Vetiver (Nishane) Extrait/2013: Lush vetiver, luxurious and juicy, top quality, A Masterpiece Vetiver Slayer (like one of you all kept saying)- Hard pressed to choose only one this would be it for me- $175 for 50ml ($3.5 per ml)
    8. Sel de Vetiver (Different Company) EDP/2006: Sultry, aquatic, marine vetiver. Beautiful composition- $195 per 100 ml ($1.95 per ml)
    9. Akanesasu (Di Ser) EDP/2000: Floral vetiver, gorgeous blend of vetiver and jasmine- $100 for 33 ml ($3 per ml)
    10. Fumidus (Profumvm Roma) EDP/1996: Somber vetiver, and melancholic, thick smoke and booze, hard to wear yet addictive and meditative, WEAR IF YOU DARE AS IT GROWS CHEST HAIR- $265 for 100 ml ($2.65 per ml)
