Mills Family Gardening
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 มิ.ย. 2015
We fell in love with gardening in 2010 after we watched a documentary about conventional food, and realized that we needed to have our own organic garden. We didn't know what we were doing and failed a lot. Reading a lot of articles online and watching videos about gardening gave us a better idea of how to improve. And we are still in the process of learning. So what started as an effort to simply eat clean, organic food, turned into an exciting adventure of discovering the secrets and wonders of nature and being constantly in awe of how balanced our ecosystem is, that God thoughtfully designed for us.
Caring for BLUEBERRIES (in winter) for maximum production
Blueberries can grow in a wide range of growing zones, and can tolerate freezing temperatures. Here in North Texas, Zone 8a, we have two blueberry plants in containers. Growing them in containers has a few advantages that allow us to give special care to our plants. One example is that blueberries need acidic soil, so we're able to use acidifying fertilizer in these containers to encourage healthy growth. This video also shares a few other tips to do in winter and early spring to ensure a good crop during the growing season.

Garden jobs for JANUARY (North Texas)
มุมมอง 37919 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
There's never a dull moment in our garden, because even in the winter, we can start seeds, plant a few things, and prepare beds. We're fortunate to live in a mild climate in Zone 8a. One job that takes some preparation in advance is sprouting potatoes and preparing sweet potato slips. We also have a variety of cold-weather flowers we can plant to keep our garden beautiful year round. This is al...
Germinating Gomphrena seeds - the easiest way
มุมมอง 550วันที่ผ่านมา
We love our gomphrena flowers in our North Texas garden, but it's been a struggle to germinate their seeds. We've recently found a more successful method, even though only a minority of the seeds will sprout. It's important to try germinating a large number of seeds to get a small number that sprout.
Growing GINGER in containers from START to FINISH
มุมมอง 2.3K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
We recently harvested a crop of ginger that we grew in containers here in North Texas, Zone 8a. One of the challenges with growing ginger in containers is keeping it sufficiently watered. We kept ours on drip irrigation, and we kept the containers mostly in the shade during the heat of the summer. Ultimately, we found one thing we could have done better to grow bigger rhizomes, so we'll try to ...
An IN-GROUND alternative to raised beds
มุมมอง 2.4K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
Raised beds are popular among gardeners, and we have several in our backyard. They're particularly helpful in areas with poor soil. However, they have some downsides, such as deterioration over time and requiring more irrigation. On our new piece of land, we decided to avoid raised beds with in-ground beds. This video shows you how we created an in-ground bed, how deep it is, what we put in it,...
Moody Gardens Tour (Galveston, Texas)
มุมมอง 71หลายเดือนก่อน
We recently were able to tour Moody Gardens in Galveston, and the Rainforest Pyramid in particular. Galveston is a subtropical climate with numerous plants and trees that we can't grow in North Texas. Inside the pyramid, they have a wide variety of tropical species and exotic birds and animals. The Rainforest Pyramid has been open since 1993 and reaches a height of ten stories. Maybe someday we...

you can just buy regular potatoes at the store and leave them on the kitchen counter, the floor, in a cabinet. i mean just leave them lying around anywhere inside really, and they sprout. freezing them is about the only thing that stops them.
Amazing and very informative!❤
Aww, thank you! 😊
Hello I just started growing basil. If I prune the tops off, can I plant them to make more basil?
You can put those cuttings in water, and they'll root in a few days. Then you can plant them in soil.
What I don’t understand about the watering from below is.. I thought that the ceilings need to be watered twice a day to keep the soil moist. When is the watering from below necessary? Because how do you get the seedling to seek out the water when you want to also avoid not letting your so you’ll get to dry?
I water seedlings when their soil is dry. It's easier to water from below than watering every single seedling. The soil soaks up the water and stays moist until it gets dry again, and it's time to water. I water every few days.
I think I'm in the same area you are - this is so helpful, thank you!
You are so welcome! 😊
Its been so mild here my purple sweet potatoe vine is still going ! Spring Tx I think were getting 30s next week as the low. Hope they pull through
The winter has been very mild so far this year, but this week will be in the low 20s. I'll have to cover my root vegetables.
@millsfamilygardening2634 yes were hitting 30s and i have to move all my citrus and tropical trees in the garage 🥴😫😫.
OMG I am scared of caterpillars but I don't have the heart to kill it. I let nature do the work. There are lots of birds in my neighborhood.
@@sreykimsear I used to be scared of them, but not anymore. 😊
9 likes beautiful sharing dear friend ❤ nice video 👍 great work 👍🤗🤗
Thank you so much! 🤗
Thank you for the advice :) I am going to try sprouting some seeds from various Acer's which I got as a christmas present. I have them in the fridge for now, might plant them in March and see if they grow from then in my greenhouse. I also take cuttings and some airlayerings. My favourite plant/bonsai is my Dads Sycamore maple which he first planted for me 24 years ago. I still have it and it's featured on my youtube logo and can be seen on my channel. Have a great day!
Thank you for sharing about your Dad's tree. It's very special! I hope the seeds germinate without a problem. Thank you!
Thanks for the nice video. I live in Sweden, so we have cold climate compared with you I guess. I though also cultervate ginger and its really fun and convenient plant to grow due to the low maintenance. I usually start in January and then harvest roughly 10 months later. I have the ginger in my greenhouse maybe around 4-5 months and then I need to bring it inside until it dies naturally. Hope to see many more videos from u, keep up the good work
Thank you for sharing your experience with ginger! My plan this year is to start it in January, too, and see if it grows bigger rhizomes. Thank you!
Thank you for this video! I was so lost
I'm glad it was helpful! Thank you!
At last,the vital,planting information.Thank you.
Thank you!
Hi Dina ! Glad yours took off very well and produced more then I have been able to grow. I have tried in ground and in grow bags and I manage to get them to grow to like 6 inches then they just seem to stop growing for some reason. But I will continue to try in 5 gallon grow bags until i get it right. I like making ginger tea out of it for it's health properties. Thanks for sharing !
We'll be growing it again next year. I'll plant it in larger containers. Ginger is very beneficial to our health. I hope you try again and get great results. Thank you!
Thank you for this helpful video! We are planning adding irrigation this season and have a lot of concerns this helps. Do you have any issues with the water temperature getting so hot for the plants. When I use the water hose it's burning hot in the summer sun & heat so I have to let it run off to cool down before watering.
The same happens to our water hose in the summer. I don't know if the water heats up in drip lines. But if it does, it does not affect plants in a bad way. Our plants are fine with drip irrigation in the summer. Good luck with your drip irrigation! It will take your gardening to the next level.
I live near Huntsville, Texas and I grow ginger almost every year. Mine is in larger containers(lick tubs) , however mine get full sun with shade not happening until late afternoon. I just harvested a few days ago(Dec 20th). That gave my ginger a longer growing time. After the first real freeze here(Dec 18) I went out and dug up my tub. HUGE rhizomes of ginger and lots of them all from one good size rhizome from the grocery store. I've found that as long as I keep it well watered, ginger loves the heat and the sun. I also think that the larger the pot(given the time) the larger the harvest. Good Video!
Thank you for sharing your experience! That's interesting that your ginger tolerates full sun. Mine gets burnt leaves every time I leave it in the sun. I'll try again this year, and I'll use bigger totes.
Leaves are geeen in winter where you live ? All the vegetation on the ground is green as well.
@absoliutenuds the video was made back in November. Now, most leaves have fallen. We do live in a milder climate.
What are you watering it with?
@@bradleygass2911 rain water.

We call it tino tino in my country.
It's cute. I think I like that name better than ground cherry. :)
Thank you! Probably the best video on asparagus growing I’ve seen so far. Really like the time lapse to let me see the whole process. Planted my first last March but didn’t know where to go from here. Looking forward to the Spring! Thanks again.
You are very welcome! I'm so glad it was helpful! Thank you for the nice comment!
Aunty with the amount of bags you loaded into that hole and the cost attached it's gonna be the most expensive potatoe you ever ate 😂
I agree, all those soil amendments are pricey, but we plan to use this in-ground bed year round for many years to come, so it is a worthwhile investment.
I would say for those with clay to give it a to and see. I grew sweet potato in gumbo clay with a woodchips covering. My largest sweet potato was the size of a small soccer ball. I did use grocery store sweet potato to grow out the slips.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It's good to know that you had a great result. We might do an experiment on growing them in native clay soil.
Yes please, plant the same crops nearby with no tillage or amendments, to see if it makes a difference.
@ hard clay would have some more malshaped tubers similar to carrots but sweet potato is same family as tie vine and morning glories so they are in a family of some rather invasive type plants. You would still get tubers.
👍🏻

Thanks to you, I tried this method and it WORKED! One critter must have been frustrated because I could tell it was really trying to get into the bag and couldn’t. It was a little warped but no bites in the melon. Yay! Thank you so much for sharing this information. I’ll be doing this from now on. 🙏🏽

Great tips and advice thank you
Thank you!
Besides frying them or making them into Gumbo. What else can you make with okra??? Cuz I would love to try it out in something different. That’s all I’ve ever seen made with it.
I like to roast it with onions in the oven. It's much easier and faster than frying.
@ Thanks 😊, I’ll give it a try!

I use aquarium water from my 3 fish tanks that I drain 25% from every two weeks. I never use chemicals in these tanks. Fish get a water change, and my plants get watered and fertilized. My fish and plants are very healthy. It's a win, win deal.
That's great! I bet your plants are thriving on that water.
This helped me in 2024❤
Thank you!
One of the things I am worried about is if I have to move before they are ready. What would you think of large plastic bens, drill holes in it and plant one to two plants in each one. That way if I move I can take them with me. Or do you think you could dig up your root system and move them to a new location?
You can grow asparagus in containers that are at least 18 inches deep.
I like to vegetable

This is great. After viewing many videos on composting I had actually thought about just doing it in the box because I already have many of these around. I then came back to You Tube and literally searched for composting in a cardboard box and feel so validated and inspired. I have never composted but I am now ready to try. I hope to avoid attracting termites, rats and other wildlife, though.Thak you for this!
I hope it works really well for you! Thank you!
