Mills Family Gardening
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 มิ.ย. 2015
We fell in love with gardening in 2010 after we watched a documentary about conventional food, and realized that we needed to have our own organic garden. We didn't know what we were doing and failed a lot. Reading a lot of articles online and watching videos about gardening gave us a better idea of how to improve. And we are still in the process of learning. So what started as an effort to simply eat clean, organic food, turned into an exciting adventure of discovering the secrets and wonders of nature and being constantly in awe of how balanced our ecosystem is, that God thoughtfully designed for us.
Growing SWEET POTATOES without slips (in containers)
We recently experimented by growing sweet potatoes two different ways. One way is what we've done for several years in our North Texas garden, which is in our large raised bed. We first grew slips before planting them, and they stayed on drip irrigation with a steady amount of fertilizer. We also grew them from whole sweet potatoes without slips in a large container. In the end, we saw a noticeable difference, and hopefully the lessons we learned will help you with your gardening.

Transplanting a PLUM TREE to our NEW LAND
มุมมอง 16228 วันที่ผ่านมา
We just bought a new piece of land with plans to plant many trees, flowers, and plants over time. We had a plum tree in our backyard that wasn't in a great location, so we decided the first tree on our new property would be this plum tree. This video explains how we dug it up and moved it to its new home. We can't wait to show many more videos from our new location here in North Texas, Zone 8a.
Drip IRRIGATION: Benefits & Tips
มุมมอง 380หลายเดือนก่อน
We have our backyard garden set up on drip irrigation, and it's been an extremely beneficial improvement. This is partly because our summers are very hot and dry here in North Texas. But this also allows us to fertilize through our irrigation system and ensure an even distribution of water. This video shows how we set it up with a timer, plus a few other tips. We also compare drip irrigation wi...
What to do with overgrown OKRA plants
มุมมอง 7302 หลายเดือนก่อน
We recently left our okra plants neglected for about two weeks in late summer, and many of the pods became hard and overgrown. This video explains three options you can take when this happens, with one being to let them continue to harden and go to seed. Prudent gardeners always need seeds for the next growing season. We also compare which variety has performed the best despite being neglected,...
Montreal Botanical Garden Tour (2024)
มุมมอง 4062 หลายเดือนก่อน
We recently got to take a trip to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and one of the highlights was a tour of their Botanical Garden (Jardin botanique de Montréal). It's located near a number of great attractions that we didn't get a chance to visit. Overall, it was great to see many plants and flowers that don't grow as well in our native Texas, or perhaps grow only in the shade in Texas to avoid the he...
How to grow MELONS in containers (START TO FINISH)
มุมมอง 3223 หลายเดือนก่อน
We experimented this year with growing melons in containers, which is generally more difficult than in the ground because it's harder to keep them well watered. We live in North Texas, Zone 8a, so our summers are quite hot. This video explains every step of the process - growing, fertilizing, watering, protecting your melons from pests, and harvesting. The melons we grew were the Kajari variety...

@@BobNchannel thank you!
Thanks to you, I tried this method and it WORKED! One critter must have been frustrated because I could tell it was really trying to get into the bag and couldn’t. It was a little warped but no bites in the melon. Yay! Thank you so much for sharing this information. I’ll be doing this from now on. 🙏🏽
I'm so glad it worked for you! Thank you for the feedback!
the time lapse videos are really interesting
Thank you!
Great tips and advice thank you
Thank you!
Besides frying them or making them into Gumbo. What else can you make with okra??? Cuz I would love to try it out in something different. That’s all I’ve ever seen made with it.
I like to roast it with onions in the oven. It's much easier and faster than frying.
@ Thanks 😊, I’ll give it a try!
You are vey welcome!
поздравляю с новой землей!
Спасибо большое! 😊
So cool. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Great video. I have to do this.
Thank you! I hope you can try!
Thank you. 😁👍🙏
Thank you!
Wahh sangat bagus sekali, saya juga suka tanam pohon angguri👍
Kalo di indonesia ini namanya buah ciplukan mom
Jesus loves you ❤️
Great job moving the tree and congrat's on your new property. look's great.
Thank you so much!
Будем ждать весны. Как деревце приживется? 🙏
Надеюсь, приживется. Спасибо.

I use aquarium water from my 3 fish tanks that I drain 25% from every two weeks. I never use chemicals in these tanks. Fish get a water change, and my plants get watered and fertilized. My fish and plants are very healthy. It's a win, win deal.
That's great! I bet your plants are thriving on that water.
This helped me in 2024❤
Thank you!
One of the things I am worried about is if I have to move before they are ready. What would you think of large plastic bens, drill holes in it and plant one to two plants in each one. That way if I move I can take them with me. Or do you think you could dig up your root system and move them to a new location?
You can grow asparagus in containers that are at least 18 inches deep.
I like to vegetable
Gardening is great!
Thank you so much. I throw out a lot of potatoes but now I know how to store and keep them longer. Thanks for helping me save money.👍👍😊
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thank you!
Great video. Answered all my questions
Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful!
are pretty like hibiscuss
They are!
You might be able to propagate by division.
I haven't done it, but it's very possible. Thank you!
This is great. After viewing many videos on composting I had actually thought about just doing it in the box because I already have many of these around. I then came back to You Tube and literally searched for composting in a cardboard box and feel so validated and inspired. I have never composted but I am now ready to try. I hope to avoid attracting termites, rats and other wildlife, though.Thak you for this!
I hope it works really well for you! Thank you!
How do you eat overgrown okra
We don't. It's too woody.
Or you could make compost pile in your yard or larger bucket. This is not enough for most people’s needs. Useless
I always have a few composting pots. But, yes, piles and bins are great, too.
@@millsfamilygardening2634 I think it's great. Composting piles take ages and I've not mastered that yet. I'm going to try this as a way to get compost faster
How do you protect it from the neighbors kids that DECIDE TO PLAY TACKLE FOOTBALL IN THE ALLEY OF BOTH HOUSES WHERE MY MELONS ARE!? Oh yeah, you don't put them in harm's way. duh! -.-
Wait. Reemay and other agricuktural covers can keep insects out. So, what am I missing?
Agricultural covers are great for smaller type squash, like zucchini. But for vining varieties, it's hard to contain them under a cover. But, yes, insect covers can certainly be helpful.
I'm growing Romas for the first time! Still flowering…
That's exciting!
I live in Austin area. Cantaloupe did extremely well for me in the heat of summer this year. Thanks for the garden tour in the heat!😊
Cantaloupe loves Texas heat. Thank you!
Thank you, you are a life saver.
Thank you!
What the name of this sunflower
I planted a few varieties, and don't remember which one that was. I'm sorry.
It has to be a deeper hole. Flies will be attracted to it and dig their way in.
A deeper hole will work, too.
What o you think about using women's leggings?
Animals will chew through them easily.
@@millsfamilygardening2634 Have you tried them yourself? Someone said that the Amish use them effectively
Drip tape is the way to go in long areas. I use the 1/4 =" to individual plants and the 1/4" "brown" (every 6") in containers. I ALWAYS plant too closely and by July start having to move plants so the drip tape holes are 12" apart. Soaking has never lasted long for me and frankly was inefficient and ineffective.
@smb-zf9bd I plan to try drip tape sometime soon, hopefully. Thank you!
@@millsfamilygardening2634 One word of warning. They really only work well when they can be laid out straight. I have a 30' "coil" that works but it won't do corners or sharp turns. And make sure holes are visible (I first had mine in the dirt and they got stuck with dirt). Good luck
@smb-zf9bd Ah, good to know! Thank you for the helpful tips!
Here in the northeastern USA, I have been growing my Roma tomatoes in containers for many years. I really enjoyed your tips. This year I planted 6 plants and I have had the biggest harvest I’ve ever had. I canned an awful lot of sauce, salsa, and gave away a lot of tomatoes!
I love Roma tomatoes. They are highly productive and resilient plants. It's wonderful that you've had so much success with them. Thank you!
Very informative and a pleasure to watch, unlike so many others who treat viewers like idiots! Thanks for passing on your knowledge, cheers
Aww, thank you so much!

Okra is my favorite vegetable to eat & now grow.
We love okra! Thank you!
Okra is one of the easiest plants i found to grow in my zone 10. It thrives in the heat and sun light. Mine grew to about 7 feet then when it slowed down to almost no more production i trimmed them down to just about 6 inches tall and new growth sprouted pretty soon and i let them grow for another harvest. How did the rest of your garden do during your vacation? Thanks for the video Dina !
We love okra, especially Burgundy okra. It's extremely productive! The garden survived because of drip irrigation. I still need to plant fall vegetables. Thank you!
Очень информативно о таком необычном растении, как окра. Очень полезный продукт, хотя вкус на любителя 😊
Спасибо большое! Мы очень любим окру.

I've watched a Dozen videos from famous TH-camrs. This is the best explanation I've seen. thank you
Thank you so much!
Along with clogging and failing, soaker tubing can come with pin sized holes. As a result, it sprays water where you don't want it to go. I have had drip lines in the ground for over a year with temperatures below freezing. They are working well for me.
I prefer drip lines, too. Thank you!
Lol, welcome to Montreal
Thank you! We had a great time there.
Спасибо за причастие к красоте. Розовый лотос, это натуральный цветок или бутафория?
Это натуральный цветок. Остальные лилии тоже натуральные. Спасибо!
Doule the size of your container. Your romas look terrible. A healthy roma has 4 times the fruit you do. Do the opposite of what this pretty lady does.
Great experiment and you helped me determine how I want to try composting at home. I want to have about 10 x 10 area to compost. But I also want a "staging area" next to my main rich compost area. This box idea would work perfectly, and I could rake these over as they mature, turn everything at that point, then wait for the next batch to mature and rake over again. It's a way of mimicking the stages a large scale composter would use. Or at least the best I can do with the space I have. I am looking for a longer maturation stage with my compost, probably close to two years. My second trick will be to use this box compost as "in garden compost" at the end of the year, and either leave one of my gardens dormant for next season, or just try planting the next season to see if it breaks down enough to supply all the right nutrients year after year.
That's a great idea! Composting in cardboard boxes can certainly be done in several smaller batches. That's why I like this method. I hope your plan works well. Thank you!
what brand of stapler is that and where did you buy it?
It's a Maped stapler. Any regular stapler for paper will work.
