Martha Armstrong, a Painter of Well Loved Places

Though I have admired her work for decades, I finally have my chance to make a movie about painter Martha Armstrong. Just as some figurative artists only paint people they know, Martha’s show of landscapes at Gross McCleaf features places dear to her heart.
She told me a story about that.

Martha's paintings are eloquently crafted. Wonderfully bold with beautiful shapes. One of the things I like is how she focuses on translating light and color into a unified visual experience. She really conveys the emotional and perceptual impact of her surroundings. Beautiful landscape paintings.

Magnificent work. So fresh and loose with gorgeous use of muted tones. Her work reminds me a little of South African artist Erik Laubsher who was influential in my art education in the early 80's at Ruth Prowse.

She knows how to load her brush and make a bold, summery, strongly yet unpredictably patterned statement. They have a vividness that isn't a fleeting moment captured, nor yet eternity. Looks like time slowed down just enough so she could finish her work and that work a testimony and act of appreciation for whatever caught her eye. I like them.

I wonder if it's possible to find posters of her work. I looked but there doesn't seem to be. I liked how the interviewer asked about apple pie. His questions would fit the temperment of many an artist.
