Metrolink is so far from perfection it‘s actually hard to conceive. They aren’t even doing the bare minimum for the massive region they serve.

25:34 And I get that folks'd say "why would you go *up* to Stockton? There's nothing to do there." And that's a problem of travel patterns that we need to change. Most places I've seen, mass transit is usually made to feed existing popular travel patterns instead of influence them

I swear if the san bernardino line and the OC line had Caltrain frequencies all would be good in this world

ACE is mainly for people who work in the Bay Area, nobody really takes ACE to Stockton for “fun”, people who ride ACE is people who work in the Bay Area, that’s why their frequency is bad and not as good as Caltrain

That doesn‘t mean they shouldn‘t run bidirectional all-day service though. A serious rail service is one that is available at all hours during the day. Who knows if people actually would ride from SJ to Stockton in the reverse-commute pattern or if the line would see use on weekends. I almost guarantee that if you provided those options, people would take advantage of them.

Poor ACE 😢, but yeah the Riverside Line is the butt end of all Metrolink criticisms.

    >I want to take the southwest chief but can't find any reason to
One excuse is to go to the Grand Canyon! The Chief is a night train from LA to Flagstaff and connects to a Groome Transportation shuttle to the south rim
If you go the right time of year and get a reservation at the bright angel campsite you could hike down to the Colorado river, camp there for a night, and then hike back up early the next morning.
If you book amtrak waaaayyy in advance at least it's a little cheaper than Greyhound (though still quite expensive)

capitol corrider is pretty expensive unless you're a regular traveller or they have discounts. Single ride's pretty expensive but they sometimes have good discounts (take5for5, bogo, etc) and have good 10-ride benefits
