510 Leads Amtrak Deadhead through Oceanside ft P42DC 158!
Out of nowhere Amtrak Dash 8 loco 510 appeared on a low-level comet set with P42DC 158 leading train 562 and 573, Only for 510 to break down at Irvine leading to Amtrak Cancelling 562 and deadheading the train down to Santa Fe Depot, leading to the rare sight of an Amtrak coasting through Oceanside rather than stopping. I managed to catch both runs on camera so I hope you enjoy!

What this railway really needs is double track from LA to San Diego and 25kV electrification. Straighten it out where possible and get the journey time down to well below what it would take to drive. Increase the frequency to well over one train per hour. The USA can rebuild its passenger rail network, one city pair at a time.
Nice!!!
The other item - Culture at Amtrak it's consistent need for change orders. Brightline gets the basis of the car, not even painted with the last 10 cars. They do final assembly with BL and Siemens techs and share updates and changes and does any relevant crew training. Amtrak does SOME crew training but basically enough on how to operate it, not how to be efficient with it. The change orders are the biggest item that has led to a bulk of the delays. It is also why VIA Rail is having limited to no issues with their trainsets vs Amtrak.
Brightline is an awesome feature to Florida, and I cannot wait for the Tampa connection as someone who lives in the Tampa Bay Area. We took it to Miami last summer and it was an awesome experience.
They really pulled the Nickelodeon theme lmao
I wonder if the fact that Brightline uses bio-diesel fuel and Amtrak doesn't makes a difference? I knew as soon as I saw the first Amtrak Chargers with the large open, ventilated area in the middle like Brightline that this is going to be a problem in cold weather. Brightline runs in a warm climate that rarely sees temps below freezing. Close the middle! Knowing all problems I can't imagine what the new Airo trains will be like, dual mode, hybrid, combined with poor maintenance. YIKES !! Service reliability will be a disaster!
Nice short
Eso
Sharp horn, sound like alc-42 333
She was really asking to get squashen by the train😮
Phase V power!
Cool video 😎
I guess Amtrak as not learned about why trains like, The Aerotrain, The Xplorer, The Keystone, Daniel Webster didn’t work well. They cannot use a hammer 🔨 and a crowbar where’s jewelers tools and calipers would be needed.
Rip 2310
So basically the part causing the majority of problems is the Cummins engine. In Europe the Vectron DE (which the Chargers are based on) uses the MTU 16V 4000 R84 as a prime mover, which is rated for 2400kW/3218hp - I don't know of any significant problems with those.
Sounds like 💩
Amtrak are cool 😊

Very cool 👍
As not american railroader. Whats the point of having any machine idli g for hours and hours without using it? That sounds kinda stupid and a waste of resources.
What are your thoughts on 2104 of the San Joaquins chargers?
Let me start off by addressing one of your first criticisms. Siemens has made diesel locomotives in Europe for many decades. The most recent were the Eurorunner (ER20) for the Austrian OBB and the Vectron Dual Mode for assorted operators. Most diesel locomotives today are diesel electric, meaning that diesel fuel powers a generator which in turns powers the electric traction motors of the locomotive. The diesel power units in these locomotives are often sourced from other manufacturers, be in Cummins, Caterpillar or others. The European designs operate in areas with snow (Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, etc) and are tested for operation there. Where there has been an issue with the new Charger series is with the lateral air intakes sucking snow into the engines.
NO RAIL SECURITY - MEANS NO HIGH SPEED ! Pointless having 8,000hp in a "Brightline" passenger train, when these trains are running along old fashioned "non security fenced" railway lines. Maximum speed will always be severely limited. The USA will never get "Modern High Speed" trains until you have 100% secure railways capable of running trains at 100mph or more. And this will require the line to be Electrified using a "Modern system" such as 25,000v AC overhead, as standard in Europe and certain other countries, with of course the necessary "security" measures as seen all over Europe ! Indeed no passenger service in the World has exceeded 125mph using Diesels. And 125mph was only possible in Britain (from 1976 onwards) because we had sophisticated track systems, within a "Secure line of route". Something that still does Not yet exist in the USA. "Secure" means totally fenced along the whole line of route on both sides of the track, to prevent trespassers & road vehicles being able to get on the track. Or lives are constantly endangered ! In Europe of course we have something called "Health & Safety" LAWS. A whole complex regime, which still seems totally "Alien" in the USA !!!
For all I see the US seems to be stuck in the XIX'th century. With the wild capitalism being crown jewell of all that. The greed and disregard for common people leads to many of the issuies. And yet, americans chose the very personifications of their problems in the clown-figures of their new president musk and vice president trump (though the latter doesn't seem to realise he got the role of vice)
I think your comparing Apples to Oranges here. Brightline is essentially a 1 route service. This will reduce the amount of wear and tear because they are traversing the same route every day. You also said they have maintenance facilities at each end point. Of course they can easily maintain, because they have easy maintenance capabilities. Whereas with Amtrak you have a whole other system here, essentially a national system. Amtrak has local service (Northeast corridor), Intercity (Amtrak California/Cascades/etc...) and Long Distance (Seattle to Chicago). Secondly, lets take the route length of Brightline 224 miles from Miami to Orlando. Comparable would be the Amtrak Surfliner which covers San Diego to Los Angeles continuing to San Luis Obisbo. The Surfliner is 350 miles long in total length. Both routes are in sunny weather, however, Amtrak has to cover 1.5 times the distance. Thirdly, Amtrak has to operate on older more worn down track that BNSF and Union Pacific fail to maintain for Passenger needs in the Surfliner example. Whereas from what I understand Brightline has their own dedicated line. Fourth, Brightline only operates SIX stations on their line, whereas the Surfliner has 25 stops on the line. This means an all stop service for the Surfliner puts significantly more wear and tear on the locomotives because they need to get up to speed, run at speed, and then stop for the next station.
where is the shave and a haircut part?
From WC, All Brightline or Amtrak has to do is bring the ICE 3 DT ( tilting diesel) over from Germany and we will have the best high speed trains in the U.S.! Of course upgrading all the railroad tracks will help too, as well as good maintenance!
my favorite SC-44
Brightline isn't run like an American railroad, but a European one.
poor 2310
THAT HORN SOUNDS EPICCCCCCC
Bro finally uploaded
To be fair. Brightline and Amtrac are two entirely different train companies. Brightline is, for the most part, privately owned, and Amtrac is not. You talk about Brightline, but you show California trains. I'm not sure what the article was supposed to be about. Brightline is the best thing to happen to railroads in a long time.
I LOVE THAT K5LA!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Siemens ❌️ The Cumpany ✅️
The loco number made this all the better
The real question is, why does Brightline use soo much power for their trains? Makes no sense
Where shall I start with your thoughts. Amtrak can not have every train return to its main maintenance facility. I work out of one. On any given day, 7 to 8 sets of equipment will be at an away terminal. Some of those away terminals can do maintenance, some at a much higher cost, may or may not ground power, or the time to do proper maintenance. The average dwell time may only be 10 hours, which if it was the only train set to be worked plenty of time. Horse power, in my career, I have run P40s P42s P32acdm GP38-3 GP40 MP15 if by your statement the least amount of HP would be the most reliable. Of the switchers that would be the MP15, GARBAGE. As for the road engines, I will take a P42 (highest HP) as old as they are over anything. Not qualified to run the new Siemens Yugos yet, hopefully never. Brightline and maintenance, Siemens DOES ALL the maintenance on the locomotives. Same at Amtrak. Lastly, the more computerized you make a product, the more likely it is to break. When there are 25 subsystems to monitor the throttle, problems are going to occur. I don't care who takes care of the equipment.
Basically, Brightline's mindset is work smarter not harder
I mean, Stadler did _technically_ make a North American passenger diesel in the form of the Hm 4/4 for the Pikes Peak Cog
Is there any major reason as to why the USA is still not using EMUs for anything other than their metros? Seems like most of the advanced countries here in Asia has been using EMUs instead of using locos.
Simple, the class 1 railroads, they own most of the track between cities, and those cities are far apart, and all the class 1's like those GE and EMD diesel locomotives they have used for years. So they have no wish to do the electrify the line infrastructure work.
@EwanMarshall I see. But what about DMUs? They're basically EMUs but runs on diesel, eliminating the need for overhead electrification and such. I just think the "multiple unit" style just looks neater and modern than the usual loco-coach config, plus the added benefits of having multiple motors distributed throughout the train set which can help with speed and acceleration.
@@이마크-r8eI am European, but as far as I know, the US doesn't have a lot of maintainance facilities that can handle entire train sets, like Brightline has now. So single coaches and locos are easier to maintain. But since the new Amtrak Airo trains will be permanently coupled sets, like Brightline, this argument loses its value. But there might be another reason: Long distance DMUs are really rare in Europe too. DMUs in Europe are mostly used on short rural regional lines, with the DMUs usually having 1-3 cars. One reason for this might be the engine noise and vibration. I wouldn't enjoy those on a several hour long ride.
Bro was to excited
There would be more people who are just closet railfans coming out and becoming full hobby train watchers if it wasn't for the intimidation, one upsman ship, and smarty pants railfans who insist on talking code lingo. Most railfans FB pages require knowing train numbers, locomotive models, train route and times before you can post a picture or video. Many people, especially those who are new, are intimidated by the smarty pants railfans who drive people away from the joys of railfanning. Dirty shame!
Nice horn!
Outstanding video. I'm very critical of L.A. Country's Metro. This highlights a great example of why a private company would be better at running Metro than a public bureaucracy. Private, for profit companies have shareholders to answer to. Los Angeles Country's Metro, doesn't and has unlimited amounts of public funding, guaranteed 40+ years into the future (with the passing of Propositions R and M), so they just don't give a crap about innovation, cost of delivering their projects, having them delivered on time and any other aspects of operational excellence. Here in Los Angeles, Metro is completely unaccountable. Their services are slow, filthy, crime ridden, hemorrhage money and delivered at the highest costs in the nation. (costs of Metro rail projects are over $1 Billion per mile!!!!) If they were accountable, Metro leaders would be fired.
Did you….did you just say that Singapore is located in Australia?
