The devastating impact of drought in Samburu National Reserve

We’re dreading the forecast of another drought this year. Samburu National Reserve is very dry and there are already severe livestock incursions in the park. We are crossing our fingers that it won’t be as serious as the 2017 drought which triggered a national emergency in Kenya. That drought killed wildlife, livestock and damaged many crops, leaving millions of Kenyans in need of food aid. Serious overgrazing and desertification in Northern Kenya meant that when the rains did finally come, Samburu was hit by heavy floods that damaged a number of camps along the river including our own. I lived in Kenya at the time and visited Samburu several times during. There were gangs with AKs. There were very small kids herding cattle. I live in Nanyuki and people and cattle were dying.
