it is so wierd watching John read the prologue of Paper Towns before it was actually Paper Towns after i have read the book...
Hahaha I JUST finished the book today
Years later...
John: The way I---
Me: PAPER TOWNS
"Echo. Echo. I'm lonely." made me laugh because it felt like he was talking to me specifically and that's what it's like having Echo as a name.
+
😂
OMG John writing Paper Towns.
Ikr
Just think John, that opening line is now the opening line of a trailer for a major motion picture.... just think about that...
It's really crazy watching this right now, less than two months before the Paper Towns movie comes out. Everything that's changed in my life, in Nerdfighteria, in the world in general, is all just insane and so complicated, but this video still makes me happy, and what John said about writing is still true, and those opening lines are still being recited, except now it's by Nat in a voice over in a preview for a film that none of us could have imagined eight years ago.
Oh my goodness it's Paper Towns in the very original form! I knew from the first line and I fangirled....yeah
They don't know how popular that song is going to make them yet!!!
I love this brief few day lull period after the deathly hallows song came out and the front page feature. Like "ho de dum, here's a video I don't expect to be exciting." John, you haven't a clue what's coming. And it'll be great.
It's so cool seeing the revisions that took place between this reading and the final copy of paper towns. That's what actually gives you a bit of a window into the writing process, and it gives me hope for all my less-than-perfect first drafts.
Was I the only one who got out a copy of paper towns to see what changed in editing?
+Sydney McCleery I'm glad he cut the word "canal." It was superfluous and I have a long-standing hatred of canals.
Margo Roth Spiegelman!
The beginning of Paper Towns!!
Still my favorite of your books*, and the first one I read : )
*Well, MAYBE TFIOS, but I still kind of like PT better in a way. Maybe they're both tied for 1st.
William Bowles same! it's very hard to choose
John, I’m from the future and I have good news: You’re about to meet a guy named Chris and you’ll have friends.
Also that opening line will become the opening line of a major motion picture. And oh yeah, you’ll have 2 cute kids.

This will forever be my favorite vlogbrothers post, it has been since 2010, its now 2020 and I'm still watching it.
After reading Paper Towns multiple times as it is my favorite John Green novel, it gives me the chills hearing him read the prologue while the book was still in a very raw form. John, you are one of my greatest inspirations for my creative outlet and can only hope to be as great a writer as you.
currently on a vlogbrothers 2.0 marathon and im actually tearing up at the paper towns prologue
Nearly 8 years after this video was uploaded, the trailer for paper towns came out on this da
vlogbrothers are sooooo AWESOME!!
Ooh!!! Paper towns! I'm watching this video for the first time and the movie is already being filmed. It's my favorite book (along with Looking For Alaska) and I can't wait till the movie comes out!
I really look forward to your next book!
I finished reading Paper Towns and for a whole two months I could not even decide if I liked the book or not. I loved the prologue. I loved the characters but that ending was very unsatisfying... then the trailer for the movie came out and all my love for the book reawakened.
I read along with his reading of the introduction in the published book and I just lave how much it has changed :D
It's so fun to go back and hear John Green reading (now) old drafts of paper towns. I remember these passages and it's interesting to noticed how they've changed...
Paper towns!! I love that book!!
Just now seeing these old ass videos! I lurve them! I love the new ones, too, of course. But I tuned in circa early 2012, and I can't believe I've never seen these.
oh my god i'm so supremely excited for your book that i can barely even believe it.
Paper Towns.
It's really sad to see that the pain that comes with moving away from your friends (which I experienced this year when I went to university--it hurt like hell) continues on into your thirties . . . and yet there's something really uplifting, too, in realizing that we as humans have shared experiences like this at all ages.
Keep your head up, Past John. We love you.
I am now going to write my book. Thanks John!
good luck:)
One heck of a book, indeed.
Hey, I just started reading Paper Towns tonight, and now I had this video come up as I make my way through them all. Cool to see the prologue is mostly the same but with a few changes from when John read it over a year before publication.
John has the best voice ever, esp when reading stories, giving speeches, etc. I honestly could just listen to his voice all day forever
AHHH i just watched this but i absolutely LOVE paper towns
I got an ad with Hank in it!
That prologue is so sweet. I wish I was as good a writer as John
Legendary first lines. The lines that introduce me to the awesomeness of John Green, and inevitably all of Nerfighteria. Thank you, John. for those first lines to Paper Towns.
The quote about writing and ballet dancing was put on a poster and put in my high school class
Paper Towns :) my favorite book ever. Gosh, thank you John Green! Thank you for writing your books! Can't wait for TFIOS! Best wishes!
John in this video you were writing paper towns. Now paper towns is being turned into a movie. That is a miracle.
you are one FANTASTIC writer!
John before he realized that Indianapolis is a good place to live really.
That prologue was freaking amazing! *Rushes off to buy all of John Green's books*
it's interesting to hear how the prologue developed... I mean, it didn't change very much, but I like all the changes you made.
Very glad I got the actual book.
Thank for writing!
Dear like-minded nerdfighter,
I experienced the same existential involvement when reading tFiOS, which I finished within five hours of being lent it, at around half one in the morning. It was so phenomenally good that I went into the nearest bookshop next day and bought all of their John Green books, but they didn't have Paper Towns! Thank you for convincing me to go find it immediately.
It''s nice to know that there's a community behind these life-changing books.
John, Hank: be proud. DFTBA.
So many changes happens in the prologue of Paper Towns :D You're amazingly awesome John :)
The puff level is my favorite.
We always know how you're feeling!
I can relate to John, though with me all my friends moved away from the town we lived in. But still just being friendless and kind of lonely is tough.
im so jealous, i love your writing friends!!!
This came up on my home page in the year 2021. I was 6 when this video was published. Huh.
omg i love paper towns so much you have no idea :)
MY BIRTHDAY! AWESOME VIDEO! :D
This week celebrates the 5 year anniversary of an epic and awesome Brotherhood 2.0 week. (Of course, all of them were awesome.) Punishments, Accio Deathly Hallows and Paper Towns. It's so nice how the dates and days of the week match again and it actually is Thursday July 19.
hey you posted this on my birthday YIPPIEEEE
Ahh this was when he was writing Paper Towns! I just finished that yesterday. :) It was lovely.
This came out on my BIRTHDAY!! :D Yay
that prologue sounds pretty good
"If the book was as good as the song you wrote..."
Well, yeah, considering Hank guessed half of the things that happen!
It’s so strange to come here all these years later after “Paper Towns” has been finished and then think that some of the best parts of the novel haven’t even been written yet.
YOU wrote Looking For Alaska???!! holy shit! that is so cool. that book is completely amazing, by the way. i read it from the library several months ago, and i think i'll go buy it now, lol
this makes me want paper towns to come out even more!!!!!
omg that sounds like a cool book
I compared what he read as his Paper Towns prologue and compared it to the current published Paper Towns prologue and it was awesome because you can tell it's been edited and reworded in places. I heart Paper Towns.
i had a very similar experience when reading Looking for Alaska, except the not sleeping happened before i read the book. and of course i had to stay up the entire rest of the day to finish it. best two days without sleep ever!
thanks this helped a lot
Saw the movie just last night. It was AMAZING.
haha, just another impulse buyer. congrats on another purchase, john, i love looking for alaska
I think I'm gonna have to check out some John Green books now.
I loved that book!!! I borrowed it from a friend and have yet to give it back... It has been 3 months.
My favourite book ever.
This was uploaded on my birthday. :D
The book sounds great! ;)
ive read all your books and i was trying to remember which book you were talking about as you were reading the prolog, and i got it right. paper towns
And it was, it was one heck of a book
Just so you know, I have recently finished reading Will Grayson Will Grayson and it was just as amazing and refreshing to the mind as all of his previous novels. You will not be disappointed.
AHHHHH! when you were reading that i was laughing the whole time :D i love paper towns! little Margo and Q are perfect together
I love PT
I began scrolling to see the comments and realized is probably not a good idea since i haven't read Paper Towns...yet (I'm ashamed) and i might get spoiled (which i don't want to)
I read your comment and thought it was my own. I also stayed up all night reading Paper Towns and at 8am I realized what wonderful things had just happened.
Ahh, Paper Towns!
looking for alaska is my favourite book! i just read it recently and it was amazing!!!
Paper Towns is my favorite, of course I haven't read TIFOS yet getting a copy this week.
I liked the prologue. ^.^ Sounds like it'll be a good book.
It was one heck of a book
Paper towns :) One of my top favourite prologues. When I'm writing I can concentrate for a long time but it's just me getting myself to do stuff that's the hard part. Gah! TH-cam really doesn't help my progress. Neither does my spinny chair for that matter. OK, OK, enough spinning and youtube (ing?) I will work.
So, based on your prologue, I really would like to read the book. I've never thought of a prologue like that before...generally I have already bought the book and just start reading at the prologue, but this was like a movie preview of the book...and I'm hooked. Get me some popcorn and a really expensive coke. I'm in!
omg paper towns comes out the day after my b day woot
Dear John,
I am a fairly recent nerdfighter and am going through the old videos. Upon hearing you read the prologue, I rushed to my mom to ask what time Barnes and Noble was open until. It was 8:58. They close 9. Tomorrow, you will have one more sale.
Love from yet another Nerdfighter who loves what you do. DFTBA, but you never forget :)
Awwh. I wish I could grab a copy of paper towns and read along with him.
It is one heck of a book.
once you started reading the prologue I picked up my copy of Paper Towns and compared while you read
Paper Towns was the first novel by John that I read too! It was so amazing and it really brought me back to the person inside of me who I really aspire to me and I don't know for sure but it just really got me thinking and I've been writing a lot more ever since and am doing NaNoWriMo!!! So thank you, John. :)
Hmmm interesting prologue... Great, now I want to read the book...
I just realized that you're the John Green of Looking For Alaska fame...
That's crazy. Wow. I'm a big fan, man.
I have a research paper due on thursday that I've barely started, and I'm doing this. Don't worry.
"The funny thing about writing is that when you write well and you write poorly, it looks the exact same."
Actually, I mutter to myself and go into mass-deleting fits when I write badly. XD
It IS one heck of a book
Oh John, I miss NYC as well, after spending last semester there. I understand feeling lonely away from the city. But, I'm trying to write. I just keep getting discouraged with my storylines and trying to start anew..
I love that you are friends with Scott Westerfeld so much.
Along with you and a few others, he is probably one of my favorite writers EVER. Maybe THE favorite, sorry John lol XD
