As a transperson, I feel the need to say something here even though I rarely comment on TH-cam videos. Only in the last few years have I begun to understand and wrap my head around what is going on with my mind and body, and I've seen during this time that a certain amount of acceptance for this is beginning to emerge. I've much more recently become a fan of the Green brothers (so a Nerdfighter, I suppose) and I don't know... it's just incredibly refreshing to go back 7 years and know that this guy that I've recently come to love and respect is speaking about this issue, which is a huge part of my life. Like... 7 years ago this guy was already on my side. Before I realized there was a side to be on or that I needed people on my side. And that just makes me look up to him that much more. These two are really just a couple of nerds trying to spread some love, and I think that that is a very beautiful, powerful thing. Aaaaaand I just realized that I'm the last person to comment on this in like 6 months.

YAAAAAAAAAY! I have watched EVERY SINGLE vlogbrothers video! This is my last one!
There are 1157 videos as of 12/5/14 (excluding the march 2 2009 Truth or Fail videos)
Based on a random sample of 40 videos, the average video length is 3:27, or 3.44 minutes.
3.44*1157=3982 minutes, or 66 hours 22 minutes.
I usually watch at 1.5 speed, so took me 44 hours and 15 minutes. This took me 24 days (plus I have been subscribed to vlogbrothers since june 12). That is 1 hour 51 minutes every day.

Having just helped my cousin shop for baby clothes---I appreciate hearing your opinions on gender roles! I don't understand why we have these expectations according to sex.
As i was waiting for it to load the loading circle thing was just circling john's eye and it was very disturbing. Just thought i'd share this weird piece of information.

It's funny, in the 1800's pink was the "boy color".

There is some disagreement on this - one story has to do with a famous first lady loving pink. A hundred years ago there wasn't much colored clothing for babies at all - at some point a major department store chose a side and the others followed suit.
I don't think I will ever be able to express my absolute love for these brothers and how much they give me hope and reduce suck levels just by being. Thank you Green brothers, for showing me that not everyone is ignorant, quick to judge or close-minded. You give me hope.

Again, I literally laughed out loud at the "In Your Pants" jokes. That was jokes. Except the part where my little brother screeched at me saying: "SHUT UP!"
Every time John has a new list of In Your Pants book titles I just get laughing so hard...which is bad because it's 2 am and I don't want to wake up my parents, do you know how hard it is to silently laugh hysterically?
I love how you read through all of those titles and made them into a cohesive question haha. I just went through all of my Nancy Drew mysteries and the "in your pants" rule really does apply to all of them. My favorite? "The Secret of the Forgotten City"...in your pants.
Kurt Cobain spit out more talent with each cough than... yeah, most people.

I'm still working my way through old videos, and I reached this one today. Your video is especially appropriate today, the day after some people have their panties (or other gender-appropriate underwear) in a bunch about a J. Crew advertisement depicting a five-year-old boy with neon pink toenail polish. It's amazing that people can get so crazy when gender identity is involved.

Vlogbrothers watching history log: August 15th, 2020 (the 185th Brotherhood 2.0 video)
I just finished watching the Brotherhood 2.0 video that coincided with September 18th, 2007. Here are some things I noticed in this video, as well as my thoughts on the content:
1. Said at 0:19--sadly this never gets finished.
2. Said starting at 0:11--shots fired!
3. Said starting at 2:01--LOL; that was hilarious!
4. The message in this particular was a great one, John, and it reminded me a lot of the modern vlogbrothers videos.
On to September 19th!
Right On!!! I had an inkling of this Chris Crocker defense in my brain, and a ghost form of this idea bugged me every time people laughed at his expense...but I couldn't put my finger on why I was bothered. I don't have much sympathy for Brittany, so, I didn't know exactly what it was that made me sympathetic to Chris. You have cleared up a little cloud in my brain.
And, yeah, best "in my pants" jokes ever.

"Passport to Danger in Your Pants" had me giggling so much that it led to a fit of coughing (I was drinking some juice). Coughing aside, I really enjoyed that whole bit!
One of my earliest experiences with gender identity involved working at McDonald's and selling Happy Meals, where we were instructed to ask if the consumer wanted a toy for a girl or a boy ( we usually asked the child directly). Despite what the kids chose, the fathers ALWAYS wanted their boys to have "boy" toys and the girls to have "girl" toys and would veto the child's decision if it didnt match. Mothers wanted whatever toy kept the child happy and quiet. I always found that interesting.

I don't think Britney was a drug addict; she had a mental breakdown as a result of what was happening in her life at the time. But then again, few people know about her manager's abuse and her crazy parents.
my fave thing to do when i can't sleep is to watch old vlogbrothers videos... so that's why comments from me keep popping up on old vids.
one little note - gender is born, but it doesn't always match sex. as a 20 something physically female with a gender identity that is best described with a question mark or a "wtf??" i wanna thank you for this vid. heres a *hug* for being awesomely openminded.

Absolutely well spoken, awesome video John. People are entitled to be who they are without conflict from others. I think in a small way each of us needs to be a little more like Chris Crocker.

PS: My bookstore claims they've already preordered Paper Towns or, "Whatever John Green's next novel is." I don't know if this is true or even possible but I'm personally pretty psyched and will be first in line.
That was insane. I used to have a lot of the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys Supermysteries, and now I'm kinda curious...but they are all in a huge box about 3.5 hours away from here, so ... I'll have to actually reasearch that...and I've got hw to do, so incentive to finish early!

Good point about the whole Chris Crocker/Gender expectations thing. Funny story: I recently found a book from when I was a wee lass that asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. The choices were separated into 2 columns: girls and boys. Before I had a chance to be offended, I also noticed that the column titles were crossed out in scribbly 1st grader hand writing. Go me!
Honestly im so glad you posted a video about this, I have been subcribed to chriscrocker for some time, i love his videos where he actually makes you think 'What is Normal' is a good example. Sometimes he comes out with really wacky ones, but its part of the deal

True, true, though, that Chris Crocker shouldn't be laughed at because he's different, I totally agree. But I laughed a little...because Britney Spears' sneezes probably sound more pleasant than all her music combined.

To expand on this a little: If I recall correctly, beginning in medieval times, blue was a "girl" colour because it was calming, and pink was a "boy" colour because it represented battle.

Oh man, he had fun with the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys...did anyone read the Boxcar Children? Because I mean...there are so many good titles there...that was the first thing that came to my mind.
John is a great writing and a hilarious person with fantastic ideas, but there is nothing I admire about him more than the way he looks at society and people and the way they/we think and act. I personally believe that there is nothing more fascinating than that and I spend large amounts of time considering things like this. I always thought it was just me who thought about this stuff and it's really nice to see that it isn't. In fact, there are people I admire who think the same way I do.
Thank you very much for making this argument. Gender issues are too often skirted or discounted when coming from the non-majority.

That could well be true. I'm fairly certain I was told pink, but I don't have a very good source for my information; I just remember it being mentioned in school or something like that, several years ago.

If I'm remembering correctly, pink was a "boy" color at least partially because red was, and pink was seen as just faded red.

...So Britney deserves less pity as a human being because she's rich and not a good singer? Not so jokes, John. Shouldn't we, as nerdfighters pity everyone who's so obviously troubled? I mean, it's not like pity is a limited resource, like, say, giving money to charity. You can only give so much money, and thus have to choose where to give.
