This game's attention to detail is quite insane for the time. Like how there's actual tire degradation which is affected by the tires you choose for the car or how when your engine starts to get hot it loses power or how even visual parts affects the car's weight and that all rivals have their own unique stories and that they also sometimes wont challenge you unless you meet certain conditions or that they only appear on specific days. I miss when racing games had all these unique ideas and takes on the genre and that they actually stick
There's even secret features most people don't know about. Like, if you put enough miles on a single car, you can unlock engine swaps for it. I think it might be 700 miles driven? Or 1000? I don't remember exactly, I'd have to check my old PS2 save file, but I drove my Supra so much I was able to swap in an RB26 into it. Wild fun game.
@@tinystar3010yep. Unlike Forza Motorsport 8 awfully strict upgrade system where you need to level up until level 26 for even unlocking basic fearures!
theres actually like 600 rivals in the game total with about half of them being in tokyo, they just arent all revealed until you progress a certain way into the game. every single rival and team all have their own bio/backstory if you look at them in the rival list too. theres a lot to learn about this game (and the series in general) that it doesnt make immediately obvious, but figuring it out is part of the charm. the ae86 is one of the more difficult cars to start with but you can manage once you get familiar with the game. hope you keep playing this one, dont sleep on that body reinforcement upgrade
There's even secret racers that appear in specific areas of the wangan like a nod to Max Orido. You'll see a boss car appear called Ridux Supra, iirc the name correctly, and it's meant to be him driving in his prefecture.
Fun fact: Driving an AE86 and putting a Rolling Guy sticker on your car will make your name show up as "Rolling Guy No. 0" Also, a "cheat" was to eject the game disk while in auto-pilot so the car cruises around on its own racking up mileage so you can do an engine swap 💪

Wangan Midnight R, evolved into the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series. Which plays much differently, but has been around for twenty years now.
Genki made so many good racing games, especially Shutoko Battle series(Tokyo Xtreme Racer series), and Kaido Battle series(Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift series), and Wangan Midnight games.
Discovered the series last year myself, one of my favourites. Drift 2 is also nice, and it kinda did the NFS Heat day/night thing before that. Good handling too.
Man I loved the TXR series. Zero was my first PS2 game. I loved how in order to race every possible racer on there you had to do certain things or race on a certain night.
For the most modern experience of the series, play Import Tuner Challenge on Xbox 360. Different name, same game & still made by Genki. It can be emulated & will run with a few tricks- you have to increase the gameplay speed when loading up the game & anytime there is a load screen between the garage, parking area, and highway. Other than that- runs great & looks decent if you play it in a small enough window. I’ve fully played through it 3 times in the last few years. This was my favorite series as a kid - makes sense why I was so obsessed with JDM cars by high school!
The creators of this game actually went to Japan and filmed the highway to get all the details and interviewed real Tokyo Street racers to get the profiles for the rivals that is why you need certain criteria to race some of the rivals
It's surprising how i just learned of the series and now you're talking about it. I think these games deserves the spotlight they definitely scratch an itch people love
Gosh this game was so amazing, the handling was so frustrating, but I loved reading the bios on all the racers, and then it was heart pounding when the Wanderers show up unexpectedly
Definitely do a stream of this. The game opens up way more as you progress. You unlock more cars and more rivals. There’s a lot of bosses as well and if you drive a certain distance with a car you unlock engine swaps.

About the moment at 1:40 : "13 ogre military officers" is a rather wonky translation from Japanese to English. It refers to a recurring boss team in this series, "13 Devils".
Honestly games like these are gems ...the story's are interesting to follow the cars models are well done ...and the overall customizations and tuning are very well detailed ...thank you street supremecy and my old 3000GT 😂
These early Genki games are what really make me wish that there was a continuation of Import Tuner Challenge from the Xbox 360. Yes, I realize that was basically a re-make of this game, and I realize that the game already included most of the car content and story, but I enjoyed this style of game so much, and I was sad to see it die off. It would be nice to see some of the newer cars, the Toyota GT86, modern Nissan GTR, or some others included in a Japanese Highway racer, even if some of that culture has waned.
Toyota Chaser is a fastest starter car you can pick at the start and use it to the end, especially in engine swap will unlock after the vehicle reached 2,500 miles make it more OP especially in turbocharged does have boost mode by selecting "Select" button after you upgraded the engine however it will overheat the engine very quick. The more progress the game, racers are becoming more difficult but wanderers are built different because it will need a requirement to challenge them to race but 1 or 2 wanderer racer requirements are completed BS the only way to get it by modding the game
Kaido Battle 3 (Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2) was my favorite racing game of last year. I love their career mode structure of hunting down and beating all 300 rivals. I love the day and night system of going around the different PA's to see any new opponents would show up. I also loved that the story and lore was told through checking out the BBS messages. Its career mode structure is what I think a lot of racing games nowadays should try to adopt.

3:25 lol yeah theres a lot of settings you got to mess with for TXR3 to get into it, I beat it before I started to play TXRD2. You can adjust your sensitivity up in settings (just pause in game) I recommend MrSmashBoy28's txr3 top speed video just for the transmission tuning he shows every car. Save your money dont buy a bunch of cars, stick to 1 car or 2 being a 4wd or FR. But yall will find yalls own groove in this game, its like relearning to ride a bike playing this game after playing newer racing games. It honestly takes little bit of dedication and trying different things AND SAVE BEFORE GOING OUT LOL

Pants you should really play the game make it a "Lets Play" like Most Wanted....its a real challenge but also fun ASF, i recently finished it with a 3000GT its hard but it has so many things about it i cant really explain...and that comes from a guy that was a pure Glory Days NFS Child.
You are extremely lucky if you just discovered this game😍😍😍, it’s my favorite racing series of all time, you will unlock a lot of cool cars 🚗 🚕🚙 all rivals have story and personality
I think the reason why the handling feels weird (if you think so) was because the game are more focused on highway duel (2nd part of the game basically), and you'll mostly race on the highways. However, if you can get the handling right, you can actually use it as an advantage against your rivals (because they're suck at corners).
The bestttt of the series. They also had one called import tuner for the xbox 360, its really good only downside was the amount of cars, but customization is beyond what we find in games today

Still to this day might be the only racing game where you can make every part of the car carbon. And it even has an adorable attempt at an MS Paint inspired livery editor. And one of the best parts of the game is its rival profiles. Some of those are pretty funny, with amusing connections between different characters and one of them like the J tribute makes you question how that team even functions. Also you can throw a rotary engine into any car.. once it has 1256 total mileage that is. Why are the engine swaps locked behind total mileage per car...
If you ever want to play the Touge spinoff of the series, play the Japan release. They have way more feature and wheel option (some of it is in Japanese but the crucial stuff is mostly and English)

TXR3! I loved playing through this gem a couple of years ago, beat the main story, great game if you want a highway racer to play. If you like this I'd totally recommend TXR0 or Import Tuner Challenge for the 360, which are all made by the same dev. I'm also pretty sure that theo played TXRD2 awhile ago which is a mountain racer also made by the same dev.
That game had potential the cars and their customizations were great but the world just felt so empty but I’ve spent many of hours cruising in that fast and furious game
the tokyo drift game was by eutechnyx actually. genki were originally developing a fast and furious game based on the first 2 movies that was meant to be released in 2003, but it got cancelled
Game was a step backwards in a few ways but I love it nonetheless. Import tuner challenge was Genki's final console game on the 360, I suggest you look at that was well.
Good to see this series covered, ive enjoyed it since the PS1 days! Ive beaten them all multiple times, so enjoyable. Try Zero on PS1. It came before this abd despite the cars not having real names and less locations, its a better overall game. Tons of cars, body kits and the AI is better for sure.
I 100% completed this game some cars will only spawn with certain cars certain plate numbers etc lol might wanna look up a guide I probably put 2-300 hours in this game back in the day
If you have the patience then try out Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero. It’s older and way more weighty but still a good game. But start off with the CE9A it’s the best starter car. The replay camera angles are some of the best in the series too.
I think they've got the same developers, Genki. I watched the anime, and remember some of the ads being the same as TXR3. Searched more on this and it turns out Genki also had the license for Wangan Midnight.
@@michaelmichael2915 not the same developers. genki made wangan midnight games for the ps2, psp, and ps3 (separate games, although the ps2 and psp ones are fairly similar), but those games are technically unrelated to the WMMT games which were developed by bandai namco. genki are apparently credited for something on the WMMT games so they may have helped in some way but theyre definitely not the main devs.
@@TomokoxKuroki Perhaps they used some assets made by Genki? I am indeed wrong on WMMT, seems I mixed it up with just "Wangan Midnight" which was made by Genki. Thanks for clearing this out.

The same game developer (Genki) made both this game and The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift
4:17 the rubber banding is ridiculous in this game lol
This game imo, is as legendary as even both NFS UNDERGROUND games on PS2.
You'll enjoy this game and its challenges i sure did when it came out...have fun
I 100% completed this game some cars will only spawn with certain cars certain plate numbers etc lol might wanna look up a guide I probably put 2-300 hours in this game back in the day
It's Friday in South Africa
Happy Friday
If you have the patience then try out Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero. It’s older and way more weighty but still a good game. But start off with the CE9A it’s the best starter car. The replay camera angles are some of the best in the series too.
reminds me of wangan midnight maximum tune, i think you can play it on pc just some steps. it's normally a arcade game
I think they've got the same developers, Genki.
I watched the anime, and remember some of the ads being the same as TXR3. Searched more on this and it turns out Genki also had the license for Wangan Midnight.
@@michaelmichael2915 thats new to me
@@heizerval There also is a PS2 version of Maximum Tune, but I've never played it.
Favorite series of all time we've all gotta start a thread and get a reboot 😂😂😂 would be amazing next gen
Dude a teaser trailer for TXR reboot just dropped
Let's goooooooooo!!!!
Undrrated franchise. We need a remaster or a modern version of this game
This one of the best JDM game for Plastation 2... Next you need try Tokyo Extreme Racer Drift 2
But why😢 no game like this in Next gen....😭😭😭
WE NEED AN F&F TOKYO DRIFT SERIES!!!!
🗿
Also in this game, the starter cars does matter... A LOT.
Great game I wish I had played it I was young at that time, can make it into series would love to see full playthrough
THEO PLAYED TOKYO XTREME RACER! MY DREAMS HAVE COME TRUE!!
