    I got to admit I didn’t used to like these Top 10s but I am really loving these lately. The production quality is greatly improved, you guys are funny and informative and likeable. And Sam, I’m on to you. You aren’t as grumpy as you seem. You’re just a big ol’ teddy bear. You may be my favorite Dice Tower guy now (don’t worry Zee I still think you’re awesome!) Keep up the great work guys!

    Just an observation but it feels like every time Tom mentions "heavy euro", he says it like as if it's a negative. Then in other videos, he complains that other people think that he doesn't like heavy euros. It's because you keep doing the whole "this game is great but it's a heavy euro" thing. You did it for Terraforming Mars and you did it for Anachrony.
    It's okay to like Euros Tom. Euros are great! And not just Le Havre.

    I would love to see a Top 10 post-apocalyptic video. It would be nice to get a Mad Max or Twisted Metal style game with vehicular combat and possibly upgradeable or interchangeable weapons, maybe like Gorkamorka (or just bring back Gorkamorka). I'm new to board gaming , though I've been into Warhammer 40k since 2nd edition and Warhammer fantasy since 5th. I found this channel recently, but the reviews are awesome and give really accurate insight into what to buy and play. I just picked up Twilight Imperium 4th edition without even knowing how good it is and after watching some videos from you guys on it, I'm very excited to play it. Now I've got a list of close to 150 other games that I want to pick up and try. I can't wait to see more amazing videos, please keep it up, thanks for all great work you've done!!

    The comments regarding how to define top ten lists by genre and sub-genre reminded me of when I did my museum internship. I spent almost a year cataloging archival materials in a Civil War collection and it occurred to me that creating something based on the Library of Congress (LC) system so that you can classify games as they are reviewed or played might prove useful. Using the LC index the first two lines describe the genre of game; sci-fi, fantasy, etc., then, create your own index of primary mechanics for the third line. In what would be the line for the author just list the last names of the creators (if relevant), the next line would be the publisher and the bottom line would be the publication date. It may not be very useful now, but in the future it would make all of your videos easier to search using this as a standardized tagging method. It would also make it easier to catalog and track which versions of which games with which expansions have been played and when. For now, just think of it as an easy way to define sub groups for top 10 lists then just build on it gradually over the next few years to make it easier to transition your older material into a searchable archive. Anyway, just a thought. www.usg.edu/galileo/skills/unit03/libraries03_04.phtml

    my personal list: Scythe, Mechs vs minions (if that counts), and... wait thats all the games i own that fall under sci-fi apparently. I guess fantasy is my favorite genre since smallworld and smashup and hero realms are among my favorites of all time.

    I’d like to see this list done again and see if Cry Havoc is still this high for Tom. It’s one of my favorites. I bought it solely on the box cover and minis and seeing that it had a seal of excellence. It’s cool to hear Tom give it such high praise.

    Not my favorite list of games, but that conversation at the end is spot on. I think you could easily split sci-fi up into even more categories and be able to come up with top 10s. Alternate history, robotics, post-apocalypse and so on. I'll even say that superheroes are mostly sci-fi with mutants and tech heroes. Does anyone know the name of the book Zee was talking about, with the soldiers in the vampire castle?

    • @cfosburg

      Rick Thompson superheroes should be its own genre

    • @Tibbroar
      @Tibbroar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Superheroes is a sub-genre. Fantasy and Sci-fi are huge, overarching genres with endless numbers of sub-genres under their umbrellas. It could be fantasy or sci-fi but I can't think of a single superhero that doesn't fall under one of those two blankets.

    • @rickthompson3843
      @rickthompson3843 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed Tibbroar. I think its strange to have superheroes mix sci-fi and fantasy so much, but strange in a good way. Heroes like Doctor Strange and Zatana seem out of place, but I liked them both!

    I’ve been trying to get TIME Stories to the table. I own all the official scenarios, have played and finished the first three (Asylum in 2 runs, Marci and Prophecy in 1 run each). Still trying to get the other scenarios played, starting with the Egyptian one. Shocked that Android: Netrunner is not on the list as it’s a very good non-space-based sci-fi game.

    Just to clarify: science-fiction does not need to happen in the future

    • @kommodore6691
      @kommodore6691 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kieran Cummings Okay but no way post-apocalyptic is sci-fi when it could have actually already happened in the real world. Sci-fi deals with some kind of pseudo-science that doesn't exist (time travel, future tech, interstellar travel, steam punk, advanced cloning/genetics, sentient robots). Post-apocalyptic in the real world would just be alternate history.

    • @sortius_
      @sortius_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with that, but you can have post-apocalyptic sci-fi. There's plenty of stories that involve both. Star Trek and Firefly are technically post-apocalyptic.
      If you're referring to Scythe, though, it's definitely in the sci-fi realm. We don't even have mechs now. :D

    • @marcoschaub8978
      @marcoschaub8978 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keith: Sci-fi can be about the follies of man but does not have to be. Likewise, there are plenty of stories about the follies of man which are not sci-fi. So I'd say the follies of man have nothing to do with whether something is sci-fi or not. As for post-apocalyptic, it's the same. I don't think one those two genres is a subset of the other.

    • @Johnny_Nitro
      @Johnny_Nitro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marco Schaub the focus of the theme is in the naming. Sci-fi stories revolve around fictional science being essential to the narrative. Arguably, as our technology catches up to some sci-fi stories they should be rebranded as simple fiction. In the same vein, post apacalyptic takes place in the setting after an apacalyptic event not necessarily the end of man. The main thrust of Star Trek is not the 3rd world war, so it isn't post apacalyptic, space travel is central so it is firmly Sci-fi.

    • @marcoschaub8978
      @marcoschaub8978 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "fiction" in "science fiction" does not mean the science necessarily has to be fictional/speculative/futuristic (although it often is). You can write science fiction using current science/technology. To me, science fiction is also a lot more about the way the author goes about writing the story, or the lense he uses, so to speak. There are also stories that have futuristic technology but are not science fiction - Star Wars being the most fanous one (which is a sace saga and is much more closely related to Lord of the RIngs than Star Trek in structure).

    Terraforming Mars is sci fi, but I agree it's far from likely. We keep talking about it as a way to avoid destruction when the earth is uninhabitable but cleaning up and preserving earth would be near infinitely easier to do than terraforming a whole new planet and we can't even manage that much.

    King of New York beats King of Tokyo in every way, it makes you feel like a monster in way better ways, destroying the city and catching heat because of it, while keeping all the other good parts from Tokyo, like upgrades and so on in the game.

      Cosmic Encounter was #9 on Tom's "Space Games" list, so excluded from this list. Only #9 because it's not all that spacey. CE was also #5 on Sam's and #2 on Zee's list.

    How many times have Sam and Zee actually played Duel of Ages 2? Tom always seems to apologize for mentioning it these days because they dump on it. It's an amazing game though, and it has more strategy and depth in its little finger than most flave-of-the-months offer. It's definitely science fiction either way. And a sports game, of all things.
