- Here’s a deep tissue equivalent scintillation counter for sale. This is a pretty special meter; I’ll explain why these are $12,000 new and usually $3,000 used. I would not recommend buying these used on eBay unless the seller has thoroughly tested it and is being transparent with you about how it functions.
I have purchased many of these to fix up, and have found that “untested/as it” means “broken and/or missing parts”. If a seller isn’t willing to put in a 9 volt battery and turn it to the 0.1x scale to see background radiation, they’re probably selling you crap.
Labs do not surplus working units; almost all of what you see on eBay is there because a lab or facility had to replace the instrument due to it not passing calibration, which is a straightforward procedure, but requires a licensed source to calibrate above the x10 scale.
This meter is so special because side it has a flat response curve to gamma photons from 30-3,000keV and gives you true deep tissue equivalent readings in REM rather than Roentgens per hour, making it extremely useful for source handlers and anybody dealing with dosimetry or regulatory measurements.
I hope my discombobulated ranting wasn’t too bad!
