Bach’s famous chorale 'Jesus bleibet meine Freude', from cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben', was first heard when the cantata was performed in Leipzig, on 2 July 1723, for the Feast of the Visitation. It was during Bach’s first months as cantor and he reused music that he had to hand, as he often did. Bach had already written most of BWV 147 in 1716, as an advent cantata for the court chapel in Weimar, but it was only in Leipzig that he added the recitatives with instrumental accompaniment and the well-known chorale. So Bach turned a concise cantata (opening chorus, four arias and probably a simple closing chorale) into a big two-part cantata.

And he gave this back to God. The most beautiful thing there is!
Totally agree!
Lyrics:
Jesus bleibet meine Freude
Meines Herzens Trost und Saft
Jesus wehret allem Leide
Er ist meines Lebens Kraft
Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne
Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne
Darum lass' ich Jesum nicht
Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht
Jesus remains my joy
My heart's comfort and sap
Jesus defends me against all suffering
He is the strength of my life
The joy and sunshine of my eyes
The treasure and delight of my soul
Therefore I will not let Jesus
Out of my heart and face
Amen.

What a gift to humanity the Netherlands Bach Society is. Greetings from the U.S.A..
So true! Thank you.
Could not agree more. I am making a plan to go over and see them live- I think it will feel like crossing over. The sounds are just so amazing - you just want to bathe in the music. Can’t get enough of their work. Thank you to all members.
Did you complete your school shooting drill today?
Helt enig🌷 🎼🛁🎵🎶
Soli Deo Gloria. What a beautiful piece of music. I first sang this in 1969 as part of an international choir festival in Freiburg, Germany. I’m now 72, and I still enjoy singing this piece whenever possible ( in German, of course). Music is timeless.
The greatest Christian music in the world...if life had taken hope and faith from me, this single chorus would restore all.
How is it possible that a man who have passed away centuries ago, can give me goosebumps and tears in my eyes on a regular bases. This man is like a messias to me
Most appealing. PSALM 92: "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, 3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound."
Amen 🙂🙏
GOD bless you.
Bringing a tear to me eye. So magnificent. Thank you Lord for this music and for Bach.
Thanks Bach for this music.
@@Quim1441Even Bach did not thank Bach
@@ryanpmcguire Bach is the Lord, so yeah Bach didn't thank Bach for his music... What a mean attitude by Bach...
I knew of Bach but only discovered this piece now. Godly.
You must be a youngster
God bless ❤❤❤
“Even as an atheist, I have to be a bit less atheist when listening to Bach…”
No matter what interpretation of this marvellous piece I come across, it's always full of unspeakable beauty and eternal topicality. A real Bach's monument more lasting than bronze. Whenever I listen to it, always moves me.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful performance with us!
Wunderschöne Darbietung ❤
Whenever I hear this song I shiver and tears come in my eyes. No composer can / could exhibit the eternal and limitless love between god and his people as Bach can and no one can perform it better than the Dutch Bach Organisation. Thank you for this lovely gift!
BRAVO! BRAVO! 🎻
Absolutely brilliant!
Thank you!! 💐💐💐
Thanks Netherlands Bach Society for this Great Cantata BWV 147, of J. S. Bach.
Greetings from México 🇲🇽🇲🇽
I for one like the ever so slightly breathlessnes of this rendition. I find myself pulled along in Jesu's arms and His loving care. Althouogh the lyrics are (probably) rather meant for Easter, this is a chorale I can hear and enjoy at any time of the year. And if anyone can play such a tempo AND be understood, I can only congratulate all of them!
Agree - but Advent actually!
I wholeheartedly agree. It really highlights the wonderful backbeat the low strings and the fagotto are providing. It almost suggests percussion, even.
Thank you!
Well said! While listening, I hear Jesus' peace and solace from eternity, embracing us through all the hurly ups and downs of this short earthly life.
Debe ser un honor cantar algo asi.
Awesome! Fantastic! Beautiful! Incredible! regards from Mexico city...
❤so wunderschön und tröstlich, herzlichen Dank ❤
Last week I was nattering about the recorded sound in another NBS video. Nothing to complain of here!
It's everything coming together: The Naarden acoustics, the lovely instruments' sounds, the skilled players and singers. And Bach. Always Bach.
Thanks for this one -- it calms the spirit!
I love it so much in the wonderful German version. Bach must have been guided from above. It gives me piece in mind
The spirit is willing . Lo que el alma ansía ! Jesús alegría de los hombres . Bach siempre maravilloso !! 🌹❤
Why that fast ? Beautifully played and sung but it's like here we didn't want to be touched by the innocence, the beauty and the simplicity of that marvelous piece of music. Cool down man ! You're like that tourist rushing in and out this millenium little church while I'm quite and still on my bench, flooded by the blessing of the place.
Historically accurate interpretation.
I always think about my dear granny and grandfather when I hear Bach. They where my parents in so many way's. I will forever love them and remember them in Bach's eternal music.
Very good, some songs will still be played in 200 years. Thank you. Bedankt. ❤🎶
My most favorite piece of music in the world, sang it as a boy in my church choir, for me it represents life, living and the freedom of death…
Hermosa interpretación. muchas gracias por amar tanto a Bach.
This was one of my absolute favorite pieces as a 10-year-old singer.
Glory to the Lord!!!
We love you precious Lord 💔🥹
Bye.
Hello from India, I love this society.
Beautifully performed. I think I'll let out a little tear of joy now, thank you.
Gorgeous! Praise the Lord!
Bravo🏆🥇

Most beautiful in its original form; I tear up whenever I hear the string section.

BRAVO. Tremenda mujer.
So nice to here it at the right tempo and not slowed down like most versions
Thank you very much. Grace and full of blessings.
“Jesus, alegria dos homens”. A música que tocou na minha entrada no meu casamento há 14 anos. 👰♀️ 🤵♂️ 🇧🇷
A man who at that time was little and nothing recognized. He composed wonderful works, with what cannot be explained. The Baroque was a musical period full of very complex rules and restrictions; but look at the results, it is ineffable; an enormously beautiful music, worth listening to for the rest of our lives, right...?
Bach died forgotten even by his children, who called him "Old Wig". It took more than 120 years for Felix Mendelssohn to find Bach's scores in a butcher shop, used as packaging. But now we know Bach, we know what a GENIUS he was.
In every school on this planet kids should be taught that once upon a time there was a man named Johann Sebastian Bach.
Beautiful
Superlative performance!!!
You are all great
This is absolutely amazing
Slightly fast, but works...sublime..
Lieber Hitoshi, Ruhe in Frieden
When western civilization is burned to the ground by our elites... I pray at least this music is saved in some arcane corner of Appalachia, frozen in permafrost or in a monastery in the Himalayas.
Don't fight wars ..... play great music instead,.... 'specially Bach
@@megbailey8567 True enough. I wonder if Nero would have liked Bach?
I think you are hoping for nothing. Without the proper context of zealous and ardent belief in Christianity, Bach means nothing but just melodious tones. Bach did not write with or for even a remote concept of "civilization", but for the heart of the faithful congregation and the holy spirit. Without that culture of faith, Bach would be as useless to the future as an ancient Greek poet like Pindar is today, marvellous, high and lofty perhaps, but totally divorced from anything in the contemporary dispensation of being. We have almost complete of the loftiest ancient Greek poet, more stately and glimmering than Homer, but no one reads him. Why? It's rather obvious: the ancient Greek theological context and aristocracy perished. Bach can only survive if Christianity survives.
The woke feminist society will destroy this along with everything else. It was composed by a religious heterosexual white male after all so it has to be destroyed...
Belo gostei muito.
Just beautiful!

Bravissimi !
Magnífico, esta é minha peça favorita!
Spettacolo!!! Grandi.
This cantata represents what Europe was to the world: a beacon of hope, the future of mankind. Beauty, truth, and goodness.
Yo I love Bach too but this comment is an example of how classical music has been weilded to rationalize white supremacy and colonialism 😬 European culture (whatever that is) is not a "beacon of hope," that's dangerous thinking...
Sempre esecuzioni stupende. Grazie
Toll! Dankeschön.
Dulce introducción al caos ❤
Thankyou all. beautiful!...... . very much
Bravi all! Kudos to the oboes as well. I remember trying oboe in a pedagogy class and my mouth and cheeks hurt all week 😅
The oboe is a very fine instrument. Verily singing, and my sister and I , when we were little girls, would enjoy to learn it, if we had had the possibility for it, but there was no teacher and no instrument for it at our small music school.. But it is very hardly to play, how I have heard from some oboists with them I have talked.l But I learned the violin and I enjoy it to play it till today, and my sister learned firstly to play the recorder and then the organ and she plays and teaches both instruments today.
Excellent done. Only the Dutch accent is a little funny.
Belíssima interpretação!
Absolument somptueux
Wonderfull
