Those adverts are not _that_ old. South Africans don't freak out this much about these topics. Only the 1st world countries have the luxury to look for new things to be offended about. In SA, we have far worse things to deal with, and one of the ways we deal with things, is humour like this.
Many jokes and innuendos in Nandos ads are lost on someone who's not from SA. Ppl won't appreciate them as much as we do because it's akin to a inside joke. Their ads are known for being provocative and bold and you have to get it, to get it.
Adspend in South Africa is crazy! (As well as law bills - companies like Nando's have a huge legal budget for backlash). But they consider it worth their while since it made them famous. I attended a creative simposium where the Nando's founder (one of them) presented. It was hilarious, shocking and profound to hear his story. He decided to sell Portoguese-style chicken in a contentious Xhosa-Zulu region of Gauteng in the heat of Apartheid, as a Jewish white man collaborating with a foreign Mozambican friend. The guy has guts.
If I were any organisation , I will use Nandos ad's to get my message across its hilarious, controversial at some instances but South Africans understand them
