    The bigger challenge is when they mislabel a piece, and its number in the book is wrong. Or the English instructions just become French for a whole page. Or they don't tell you that some pieces _do_ have choice options, or they then pretend later "oh yeah this is an option, but if you built model 1 first you don't get this option here any more"...

      Which is why you test fit all your pieces together BEFORE gluing them. Use super glue it's easy to get apart again if needed. If you use the plastic weld chemical they call glue then yes have fun changing things up. It comes with experience but in the case of these overpriced models that can get old really hard really fast.

    GW instructions require you to go through them carefully at least once to ensure you're not accidentally locking yourself out of a specific model option. You're playing 5D monopoly with the sprue before you've got the glue out.

    i find the manual easy.
    yellow is connection points
    the different colors are the different builds.
    numbers and letters is us order of to build it, and they can refer to a thing you build in a later step. example building step nr 4, then in step nr 6 you put the thing you build in nr 4 and 5 on.

    • @andygrech
      @andygrech 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! The colour is related to the build option/poses throughout the booklet (blue = option 1, green = option 2 etc). The issue I see is you have too many build options sometimes and need to flick through to see if there are specific assemblies that limit your customisation, but the instructions highlight the parts specific to a build option for you.

  • @Kagán8-8
    @Kagán8-8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    TOTALLY agree with you about the instructions! Most of the cases they are fine, but sometimes the they are not logical, you can easily go wrong with the building, and plastic cement is no joke if you know what I mean... Not to mention that there are some mistakes in the instruction numbering and the sprue numbering as well. Please don't get me wrong I am not complaining, but as you said maybe GW is listening...

  • @TwinStripe
    @TwinStripe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    15:46/26:14 It's bad enough for the 'required' parts but GW are equally bad when it comes to the 'optional' ones. They don't tell you what any of the weapon options actually are, and you have to go and try to find a resource to look them up (in Necromunda, each faction have weapon variants with a completely separate look from faction to faction, so imagine what that's like).
    By comparison, look at the build instructions in the Mantic Firefight set - full instructions, with colour coding and clearly labelled equipment options for all of the units in the box ON TWO PAGES!

  • @Exark141

    I second you on your praise of Sword Brethren Jay. I don't even play Templars but I bought one for my Ultramarines army. I love Bladeguards and Victrix Guards, but I realy don't like Van Vet models. They're small and not ornate enough to stand next to Primaris Veterans, so I decided to pimp them up. I took Sword Bretheren bodies, cloaks and some weapons, than added some Presidium Shields from Custodes, some extra hammers and claws, jump packs, sanguinary guard wings and the results are insanely cool!
    If I had any desire to play with Sternguard I would strongly consider giving them a similar treatment too.

    On sprue part numbers - this was really painful on the Kill Team Veteran Guards - the numbers are scattered randomly over the sprue. It really made them more annoying to put together, I was spending as much time trying to find the part on the sprue as I was actually putting the models together. I get that there's lots of tiny parts to try and fit into the sprue, but it really seems lazy that they didn't re-number the parts *after* laying out the sprue, this would have made it far easier to work with.

    Ultrasonic cleaning is not "shaking", its the application of energy at high frequecy that creates microbubbles at the surface, the bubbles burst and the energy of bursting breaks the paint down. It helps if the paint has been softened first and has at least started to lift, that way the energy gets under the paint and lifts it off. There is a little more to it than that but this is the essentials of ultrasonic cleaning.

  • @newworldempire

    3) I think the paired ATV thing is a subliminal advertising trick. They’ll probably have two in the launch box, but then sell them separately to keep the cost low(er).
    The Sword Brethren get the advantage of Armour of Contempt, whereas the Bladeguard don’t (because of their storm shields).

    I royally messed up on some necron warriors when I cut out and cleaned all the parts at once, thinking it'd make assembly very fast later and allow me to have some slightly unique poses as it did with my khorne bloodletters... Turns out the arms aren't anywhere near interchangeable between poses and now about half of the chest pieces don't close down over the arms properly. Don't think it's too noticeable on the tabletop, but boy was going off-book punishing when assembling what's notoriously a beginner friendly kit.

  • @americonabroad

    I completely agree! As a noob, I chose AdMech because I loved the idea of the dichotomy between advanced technology and religious fanaticism! Building the models however was a puzzle so I made a lot of mistakes because I was unaware that the instructions were more "suggestions" for the unit rather than the way they should be. For instance I gave my one of my Skitarii Rangers a plasma rifle instead of sticking with the glavonic rifles that make the unit much more cohesive. Unfortunately the learning curve for GW models is pretty steep and it would be nice to have more explanation for the building process, especially in a combat patrol box set which is often used as a "starter" set.

The cheap ones tend to not have features like “turning off after a certain time” or “vibrating different to tell you to change locations” which would be annoying with scrubbing models. With the electric toothbrush, you can basically turn it on, push it to the intricate detail section giving you troubles, and it’ll scrub for you.

    I think the worst the about games workshop assembly is the parts numbers. You don't always start with part 1, the parts aren't always assembled sequentially, and the numbers don't correspond with their placement on the sprue.
    One model had part 9 on the second spru, and it took me way too long to find it.
    I wish they would switch to have the numbers in order on the sprues, so it would be easier to find where the piece is. I wouldn't mind starting off with gluing part 7 to part 52 (heck, I've already done things like that so they don't have that problem either), but knowing approximately where part 7 and part 52 are on the spru would be so helpful.

    So, as an outside who got into 40k after Squats were already mostly squatted, and who never got into Warhammer Fantasy, this is purely my opinion, but I think we can blame WF Dwarven Dragonslayers. If you look back in time, these up close, vicious warriors carried hammers and axes into battle, and they didn't wear armor; they looked silly, being round, and naked above the waist, with their mowhawks, and braids, but something about their task, their tattoos, their magic, or something, made them like Viking berserks, and their flesh could repel even dragon fangs and claws. These new Cthonian Berserkers feel like an homage to those, and I bet they don't wear armor for the same reason. Also, if you look at Col. Strikes, of Catachan fame, I think he's basically got power armor saves without even wearing flak, because he's so teched up his body is as hard as steel. I'm going to admit, I too wish they were armored, but I think they look nice, and that set of basically powerfists one is my favorite of those. I would love to see some Catachan Veteran sporting dual power fists, like that, and just wrecking stuff, and I don't even really like Catachan. ☺️
    I think those new Black Templars look good, as does your paint scheme. Sadly, that's well and out of my own skill level, at present, and since I don't need to paint an army, I find it very difficult to find a way to practice the things I don't do, like greenstuff, washes, or purchasing an airbrush, but I love seeing other people's great works.
    If I'm being honest, I'm actually mad at how GW dies some kits. They have things that people don't mass purchase, even in successful lines, and that makes perfect sense, but I really think that they could maintain a small sideline where people can order those, and get a 3D printed model tight from GW. They really like to bring the anointed banhammer down on some people who copy their stuff, and I get that; it's their intellectual property, and they have a right to protect it, even though there are numerous things that they don't make, because it might not be worth it, that I'd like, but while I don't expect them to say "we don't want to make more Court of the Archon models, since no one fields them, or each of them", or Uruen Rakarth; whatever model it is, there are still people who might want them, and while it makes sense not to print a bunch, and sell three (I remember what almost killed 3e Dungeons & Dragons, with their multitude of splat books), they could easily still make a few, on demand. I'm not saying give out the STL, or whatever; still their IP, but don't take away whole options, especially when it can mean "if we don't sell an exact model of that, it won't be an option in the codex" strikes. Don't tell Mr my hyper-customizable Autarch can only have two specific builds, and THEN put a third I couldn't use on the new cover. They could easily, even cheaply, keep fans happy, and possibly even prevent some of the third party competition they claim they don't like, just by doing this easy practice.
    I never played Warmachine. I think I have some of the old rulebooks, but my best exposure was simply converting an Asphyxious, the Iron Lich into a Necron Lord, AR the start of 4e, when Codex Daemonhunters was new, and Necrons were still Oldcrons. I don't know Warmachine well, but it looked cool, and you could get into it more cheaply than 40k, since your force was much smaller. Maybe I'll check and see what shape Cryx is in, these days, as a new edition of WM rises.

    I had an idea that if they were going to do berserkers they should do them with votann-ified butchers nails and lots of physical augmentations in the joints. And some of the models could have a splay of needles positioned behind their heads.

      The idea of The Butchers Nails doesn't really fit anywhere else outside of the World Eaters though.

    What they could mean by "paired" is that you can take two of them for one, ten model squad. That would mean that each holds a demi-squad worth of models.

    Hey Jay, talking about Warmachine: Do you think 40k armies would be more fitting to be scaled down to Warmachine levels? So 1 HQ, 1 extra hero, 1-2 infantry units and a bunch of monsters/walkers/tanks? For example, 1 1/2 Start Collecting boxes make a full army, and 3 boxes make a large game? With GW going hard on monopose and excentric models, it would befit the system if you only could fit one of each unit into your army anyway. And it would be less of a commitment to build a full army.

    All the new Leagues of Votann just look incredibly generic even compared to Space Marines. I don't like them, their design seems weak, and they look very out of place in general. Please keep in mind that these are my opinions.

      Agreed. I feel like they look too similar to the Space Marines? If they went with an ever so slightly updated version of the old Squat look, they might have caught my interest.

I would love for you to try it and give me your opinion on it!

    Honestly I don't mind the new models. It looks like they took heavy inspiration from the miner from the HBO Chernobyl. I really like when I can see what the artist drew inspiration from.

    I think the PP 3d printing thing could be amazing for just making models on demand. Someone buys an Asphyxious:
    1. Fire up the printer and print him out
    2. get the appropriately sized box
    3. Print box art on box
    4. Put model in box
    5. Ship
    Cut down on wastage and improve availability. Unlike GWs occasional "hey buy this old model while you can" thing, they can have an entire back catalogue of computer files just ready to go. You could buy a model that no-one has bought in 10 years because the rules suck and still just get it regardless. Also potentially not have to pay ridiculous overseas shipping.

    The Sword Brethren were a nightmare to build because of the rear capes, but they're gorgeous. The Primaris Crusader Squad's Sword Brethren cape only has two contact points behind the backpack, so I actually used that to replace a cape on a model from the SB box when i wanted to do an arm and weapon swap and the original did not fit. The forced posing due to three contact points wtih the stock capes is the only thing I don't like about the models, especially when there's that extra part on the shoulder pad with the inevitable gaps (I covered those with the mini shields instead).

    Maybe they went full on miner? There are plenty of pictures of historic miners wearing their workpants, helmet, knee guards but no shirt at all and if I remember correctly I read in a local coal mining museum here in Germany that the part of equipment ditshed the most was the shirt. Apparently it took safety inspectors the longest to enforce wearing shirts... There are also a pictures of WW2 submarine engine room crew working topless... So it seems there is real live evidence for heavy industry workers and people working in confined and dangerous places to go topless...
