@@TheMsiaddict I think it's sad that no one ever mentions Rebecca Caine in this debate. Maybe it's because she played in the Toronto production so she flies under the radar. Maybe it's because she's better known as the original Cosette in Les Mis. But she's a classically trained lyric soprano, and she slays the cadenza at the end of Think Of Me. to be fair, west end was the original! not to mention the point of the song, which basically functions as an aria, is in my opinion to show the immense virtuosity of christine's singing since she has been tutored by the very "angel" of music. she's not supposed to sound completely operatic and 'show-y off' like carlotta certainly is, but there's a middle between the 'pure' musical theatre heroine and the operatic soprano, a vessel for music at its most dramatic and most beautiful. I'd argue that rebecca caines finds that perfect balance in her interpretation of the cadenza which very very sadly isn't included here. there's a wonderful performance of it from her canada run in 1991 which I think stands as the definitive version.
sierra doesn't have the best breath control. It's still called the phantom of the opera. it should be the mid point between broadway and opera. sierra isn't even the best broadway soprana..she gasps too much..she forces notes out..she's doesn't even get second position hear.
@Kam 90 the overwhelming amount of theatre critics would also appreciate other Christine dae, just as much, if not more than Sierra. I've never heard of a theatre critic jump the wagon of Sierra boggess is the best Christine ever and is a goddess, quite as much as I've seen fans. I've seen tons of them have problems with her pronunciation and singing ability, so don't speak for people. Not saying she doesn't have glowing reviews by other critics, but there is nothing there in their words that makes her stand as superior to the rest of the Christines. I'm not denying that she's a good singer, I'm saying she's pretty overrated as a soprano (and extremely underrated as a mezzo-soprano) She'd make top ten in the Christine competition but I don't actually see her being best or even second best.
@@na1959 Andrew Lloyd Webber viewed sierra's final performance as Christine. That's got to say something considering he wrote the songs for someone else.
The reason why I respect Emmy Rossum's version is that she tried to octave jump. It sounds good in theory, but it's definitely a lot harder to pull off in real life.
Speaking from a classically trained and musical theatre freak perspective, Sierra easily did the best. She showed incredible restraint and time leading up to her stellar climax. Also, acting wise she was the only one I could truly believe. She IS Christine.
I agree about the acting. When I watched the 25th anniversary thing, I feel like Sierra was the stand out and usually I don't care much about Christine in the musical. I always felt the ALW Christine was a rather boring or one dimensional role (acted hypnotized, act scared, yadayada), but she (Sierra) actually brought depth and made it believable. I could follow what her Christine was feeling/thinking, which was new to me. I think Wishing You Were Somehow Here again was honestly the best part of it. I got a lump in my throat with her "Try to forgive..." It's like I really beLIEVED it. Her life was pretty f--ed up at that moment and I can see Christine even feeling guilty that she might have let her father down in some way, ending up in this mess (even though the Phantom manipulated her, but you get my point). It's the first time I really felt a Christine was feeling guilty for letting her father down and just wanting to be out of the stupid/impossible situation she was stuck in
***** sorry, wrong wording. You are absolutely right. I meant from the perspective of someone who sings and studies this style of music (myself). Sorry if that scentance offends you. I meant she was styalistically better taking the part and who the character is described to be into consideration. My bad
***** Got it, glad we straightened that up. Sierra has said herself she isn't a trained opera singer, but it's hard to tell since she's so good at imitating the style.
***** Yes of course there is a huge difference. Opera voices are much bigger with a much heavier vibrato, which is kind of hard to get used to and a bit overwhelming for people who don't usually listen to opera, so for a musical theatre audience it would be much more toned down. Carlotta actually would be the best example in the show(I remember reading somewhere that opera training is required to play Carlotta but of course I could be wrong). Not to mention this is a Broadway show, not an opera, so there are many differences. I posted that comment after seeing a few videos of Sierra in Masterclass, in which she portrays an opera student in a much more similar style to the real thing. Still not perfect, since the character is a student, but closer (I was thinking about this when I wrote the comment, so I was thinking about the wrong example, so sorry, that one's on me). Going back to my original comment, In the Phantom of the opera book, Christine is closer to 17, however the part is usually played by an actress in her early to mid 20s. Going back to characterization, Sierra does not sound 17, but does sound and act more like a young woman who got a chance of a lifetime to sing on stage. She doesn't show off too much and has a very satisfying buildup the climax of the song compared to the others in the video, many of whom shoot up to it much too quickly.
+mackenzie shea, I know this isn't the main point of the debate you're having...but literally where in the original book does it say Christine is 17? I've read the original in French, too, and don't recall it saying that. I think one of the translations (Leonard Wolffs) kind of jacks something up translation-wise which might allude to her being younger, but that's not really what was intended. The only ages I remember being made clear were Raoul (21) and Philippe (41, since he's 20 years older). Christine's age was never specified, so I always assumed she was close to Raoul's age. And if they met as kids in Perros-Guirec, I somehow doubt Raoul was, like, 11 and she was 7 (just as an example)...they would probably have to be close in age for their little summer romance/friendship to work. I think Christine is supposed to be young, like 20, but not a teenager. But seriously, if you can point to where it says she is 17 (edition, page number, chapter, all that) I will be more than happy to know! Because maybe I missed it all these years, haha
Sierra's version flowed effortlessly and was beautiful to listen to. The others were able to hit the notes but pierced my ears...they were too shrill. Just because you can hit a note, doesn't mean it sounds good while you're doing it.
Some of how shrill they sound has MUCH to do with the audio quality rather than their voices. I did feel thrown off however with some of them going almost every which way with the runs. Sure you can show off, but I'd rather the climax note be the top note, not the note above that in your little run. AND YES, I LOVE SIERRA THE BEST!
While love that version , it has the advantage of flawless sound recording too. My second favorite is Ali Ewoldt. I just saw her perform here in DC in the intimate venue of the Signature Theatre from the second row, in a show with another of those "soprano audition" songs, "Vanilla Ice Cream". I was so blown away that I'm spending my restaurant allowance for April on a second showing :).
Christine Daaé is a character that if you only read the script, can be boring; the actresses truly complete the character. And when you have people playing Christine as a shy and reserved girl like Emmy did, I feel Christine is missing something. A spark, it feels quite empty. Sierra plays such a PASSIONATE Christine that she gives the character depth beyond the script! Yes, Emmy may fit the idea of what Christine should LOOK like, still, her voice and performance are bland. Have you seen the scene for "Think of Me" in the movie? It's empty. Though that's on the director and not on Emmy.
@@lupipdm I agree that Sierra poured much energy into the character. I love her passion but according to the script I do think Christine was supposed to be, or designed to be bland, boring, gullible, and naive. So even though Sierra Boggess is the best Christine to me, I think Emmy was also a good choice.
Doni Crunchy Yes Emmy did very well! I never said that she didn’t. I just felt her Christine a bit boring and her voice was good but didn’t sound like the voice of a musical prodigy. She was very young when she was casted, I think that someone else should’ve played Christine in the movie, but knowing how young she was and the lack of training, she did amazingly well.
@@lupipdm To be honest, i must agree, tho for some reason her voice feels very comforting for me, but the character was mostly just being a little--- it felt like it just wasn't it. She did her best tho
Dude Sierra all the way; favorite Christine in general, hands down. However I do appreciate how you included various people from foreign cultures too; that was cool. Also, even though I didn't like Jackie's that much I do give her credit for being able to do it so young. ~:~
I thought Brightman (the second time) might take it, but Boggess is not only the best sound but she makes it appear as if it's easy for her. She's amazing.
I wish they could have used the original Brightman soundtrack instead of the recordings they used. ALW wrote the musical with her voice in mind and I think the original cast recording version is the perfect blend of Broadway and Opera. Also, they should compare who sang the song, overall, better. The climax is the most operatic part of the song and if they sang the whole song operatic then they sang it wrong, because it would have sounded just the same as Carlotta, which we all know the Phantom doesn't like.
As a person who has listened the Phantom Of The Opera broadway soundtrack more times than one could imagine, Sierra is hands down the best Christine. Her Think Of Me climax is definitely the most satisfying to listen to, it's the easiest on my ear, although Ryan Lowe was pretty amazing :)
I don't know who Carlotta is. BUT, I did hear Christine is supposed to be a very gentle and nice girl. And nearly all of these sound pretty, but ALSO AGRESSIVE. Christine is supposed to be one of them, not both.
I grew up on the OLC and Sarah Brightman's version, but Sierra Bogguss's is just about even for me. Part of what others miss is the character development. Christine is unsure of her talent and this is a wake-up call. To be too over the top is to fail to get that. There's a great interview with Philip Quast where he discusses singing Javert's Suicide that is very much about how singing the material in character influences how it's sung.
Kim So-Hyun, Emmy Rossum, Sarah Brightman (the second version), Ali Ewoldt, and Sierra Boggess. Sierra’s version will always be my favorite because she does a perfect build up to the high note. Even Ryan Lowe was better than some people on the list oops. And to be honest, I don’t know what it is about Jackie Evancho, Christine Alado, and Rachel Barrell’s versions that annoy me. I think maybe the audio quality can play a part in it, but it’s just something about those that aren’t my cup of tea.
Thank you , thank you, thank you. All these people not mentioning Kim So-Hyun who in my eyes did the absolute best performance here. People seem to be commenting on general abilities rather than the clips above. Out of these no one comes close to Kim. Second would go to either Sierra or the second version of Sarah imho.
Sierra! Hands down! Followed by Sara! Sierra isn’t over the top too soon. She starts out subtle and leaves the surprise note a surprise until the end. Her vibrato doesn’t even sound like a vibrato, it sounds like two different notes like a trill! Very hard to do! Anyone who has ever sung Mozart professionally knows Mozart loves those trills!
and the same andrew llyod webber that said sarah was his christine...and then he said emmy was his christine...and then i think he said nicole was his christine for a while
Briana Hale but has Andrew Lloyd Webber heard every single Christine or seen every professional productions of Phantom? I don’t think he has so he can’t have an opinion on that since there are some he possibly has never heard. But I do agree, Sierra Boggess was the best in this montage.
He has said that countless times lol - the man does what he needs to sell the tickets (wasn’t Sierra on Bway when he said so?) More recently he said the Dutch Christine was his favourite, but tbh I think it’s disrespectful to say regardless.
Maria He definitely has a soft spot for those two, but there are many other Christines and Phantoms he also loves. I don’t think he has any “favourites” so to speak.
I feel like some of them were like ah ah ah ah ah ah, while Sierra's was ahahaha, meaning more smooth and connected. I don't know, I just liked that better. It seemed to have more fluidity and beauty in her version. But they are all very talented!
Sierra definitely. I have seen her and Harriet Jones sing live and they are both amazing Christines. Sierra just has something special in the way she embodies the character
Honestly it is hard to pick between Sierra and Sarah because they are both so amazing at being Christine. But in my personal opinion, Sierra is the best at this particular song. I remember watching the performance for the first time and being in a state of shock I couldn't think or speak for at least 5 minutes. Just remarkable.
Christine is meant to be an opera singer. If at 21-25 she sounds like a sweet little girl they would never let her sing opera. Christine must be a sweet girl with a gigantic voice.
Emmy, because she just fit so naturally to the role of Christine. Not only that, but her voice just seemed to flow and was not pushed like some of the others. I'm not saying anyone wasn't good she just sang so effortlessly. I've watched her live singing the climax and even then she nailed it beautifully!
Dude definitely Sierra. I seriously don't understand how anyone can say Evancho. Yeah, her voice is smooth, but she also did a way simpler version of the big finish. It didn't feel passionate at all, there was no tension, no push and pull.
Jackie Evancho is a child in that clip. Not fair to her to even include her in this comparison with seasoned adults. But, truth be known, Jackie Evancho is capable of hitting higher notes. As for the best, Sierra Boggess does the best version.
@@ceretomer5987Emmy Rossum was 16, though. Wasnt Evancho about 15 in her clip? Both were children/less experienced in singing than all the others featured because of their ages.
The innocence, but neither the genre nor the attention Christine got for her voice. She's supposed to be this stunning, amazing prodigy singer, fir that I found Emmys performance simply too weak. Not bad, especially compared to the rest of the cast (cough Phantom cough) but not outstanding.
jcm00 I don’t think that she’s the best on this list but purely based off of nostalgia and personal taste she takes the cake for me. absolutely stunning and light on the ears, her interpretation is incredible especially for her age then!!
Emmy Rossums version is the best I think because it just makes the high note so much more pleasing. It's like she's not giving in all the way JuSt yet until she hits the big note. I love it
Brightman is a pure tone. Technically insane. She won't allow imperfections. I would bet on her more than someone that can't handle the perfect accuracy on pitch and demonstration on her performances. She's scary accurate and breezes through it all with a single breath. She's QUEEN!!!
Agree with you 100%. Sarah (second attempt in this video) does so many vocal gymnastics here that she truly evokes the spirit of classical opera. Probably the most accurate in terms of historical authenticity of the period. People might say she sounds too overblown like Carlotta, but that's what an opera-going public would expect to hear in those times. I do like everyone else here, too, even Emmy. All styles of singing are welcome to me. I just prefer Sarah in this role. :)
My favourite is Sierra, she is clean, not showy and actually gentle on the top notes. Sarah Brightman has such harsh note entrances! Is she trying to stab my ears? And her really fake wide and sometimes oddly slow vibrato drives me NUTS, and can make her seem off pitch, especially combined with the stabby belt-y thing she does. (It is somehow in TIME TO THE MUSIC in Phantom of the Opera on the Orignal Cast Recording, if you know how natural vibrato works, you know this must be fake), just a bit of natural shinner is all you need. A lot of the others are essentially doing Brightman impersonations because she originated the role and they think that's how it's supposed to be played. It was written for her, but since Webber had married her after an affair during which both were married to other people I tend to question his judgment wrt her.
agreed! I never have the words to describe why her voice is so grating to me but you said it well. in addition, the overly showy arm movements and facial expressions also make these notes “look” more strenuous than need be. we clearly see many of these other sopranos hitting them just fine without all of that weird physical posturing.. plus theirs are not nearly as... nasal? overly rounded? not sure of the correct terminology to describe it but something about her resonance is always jarring to me
Thank you! I also dislike Sarah Brightman's voice. She comes off as very self-absorbed. I watched a recording of her and Andrea Bocelli doing Time to Say Goodbye and she really didn't mesh well together with him. Like she was trying to do a solo
Question: I'm doing a video about the main theme climax; would you guys will want to see: the whole climax("He's there the Phantom of the opera..", till the end) the sustained C6's till the E6, or straight when the key of the song changes till the end? Please note that the longer the video, the more cuts I'll have to make. That being said, if you have a singer recommendation you can leave it below this comment. xoxo 💜
Mister Golightly okay the E6 at the end of Phantom is pre recorded so it's not that impressive ... and think of me is a mixture of Bb and C ... as the show is actually as top C at the climax the published music was originally a Bb ... so these are all in different keys ...
Mister Golightly I'd say from "he's there the phantom of the opera" bc idk fir me the magic of that is the fluctuations of key, the E6 it's pretty impressive, but even more with the build up, I'd watch 20 minute video if necessary. Also I'd like to recommend 2 singers: Nicole Scherzinger, you probably already seen it, but I just love, the shock of her range wow; And Tarja Turunen, her version mixed with metal is so fucking cool. Those are my opinions/suggestions. 😊
The video is made, I'm just waiting to upload it because I'm making another ones :) But Tarja and Nicole are in it. Thanks for the 20min comment lol! The things is not many people would watch it if I make it that long, believe me. I just try to put the best of the best with some variaties to make it...interesing I guess? lol. Take care xoxo.
Emmy Rossum has the purest (not cut and pasted) ending. Sarah Brightman sings in general higher than anyone else, going up to a C6 in both clips, but I don't like her too operatic approach. Sierra Boggess finishes also on a high C, much more pleasing to the ears.
it's just irritating to see her tongue waggle so much, but the first does sound good. Also the Korean's last note doesn't come through like a knock out punch, but as a natural development of the previous two phrases. Some of the singers deliver the the ending as though it is cut and pasted from Aida but how could it be if the rest of the song is winsome and sweet?
zamyrabyrd I too feel like Emmy Rossum's is the best, I feel like she really takes her time at the end unlike the others which to me feels like is what gives it that pure sound. I do think Sierra's is good too but I prefer Emmy's I could be biased because I feel like Emmy can do no wrong lol
@@melissam597 Ikr. I love Sierra and she's definitely one of my favourites, but her fans just can't seem to grasp the fact that other Christines exist, different actresses will have different interpretations of the character and can just as good if not better than her, nor the fact that some people might prefer a different actress to Sierra. Tearing others down to prop someone up just makes people dislike the propped up one all the more even if they haven't done anything to deserve it.
I think it's hard for die-hard fans (like me) to pick, because obviously we adore the original Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, but Sierra and Ramin do a darn good job of living up to the high expectations!! Just saw the 25th anniversary Phantom show and it was SO GOOD!!
I feel that Sierra was the best. She wasn't showing off, her voice was smooth and her vibrato was beautiful. My least favorite was Jackie Evancho and Christine Allado. I knew that Jackie's was auto tuned, and it made it sound unnatural. Plus, she was very flat and it made me cringe. I honestly don't like her as a singer in general. I disliked Christine because she was trying WAY too hard at the beginning. All of those extra high notes gave me a headache and I was just waiting for her part to be over.
Sierra definitely, she stays true to the original note progression and her acting is amazing but the later version of Sarah is great too. Emmy rossum sounds pretty but way too soft to be portraying an opera singer. Oh and the first one sounded amazing, I didn't like how she hit the ending note though and Jackie though a talented young singer is trying to push her voice to sound much more mature than it is
Mister Golightly I think it ruins the overall atmosphere when people hit the highest note in the beginning of the climax, it's supposed to surprise you that she can sing THAT high.
I am soprano 1 and usually am one of maybe 2 girls to take the highest note when I do musicals and I can say after hearing Ryan Lowe sing better soprano than I will ever achieve....I quit! 🙅🏼♀️😂
In my school chorus the highest voice is done by a guy, he sings even higher than the soprano girls in the chorus. Sad thing he is 13, wonder what will happen when puberty kicks in
One of the worse ones I was referring to. Vocal mellisma/runs are used to hide the fact they can't hold a steady and are trying to show off (it actually does the opposite!). Sing it straight or not at all!
How amazing is that this video has reached over 100k views?! I can not believe it, seriously. It's my second video to reach this amount and I can not thank you enough really. @@neni8169 It is, though, lmao. Operatic pop is a genre, and it happens to be the genre of the show. Andrew Lloyd Webber has even referred to the two songs he released as singles, the title track and "All I Ask of You," as pop singles. So.

darling. Ma’am, it’s the real note Sarah Brightman sang. They made the note higher for Sierra.
Emmy was the best Christine. So sexy.
Jake Miller She’s pretty, not sexy😂
No particular order:
1. Sierra Boggess
2. Sara Brightman
3. Emmy Rossum
Kim Elliott yes
Agreed, I could listen to any of those three any day and walk away happy. Sounds like beautiful birds singing.
Sarah is best
Kim Elliott Emmy Rossum is by far my favorite
That is probably a perfect order though
The reason why I respect Emmy Rossum's version is that she tried to octave jump. It sounds good in theory, but it's definitely a lot harder to pull off in real life.
Emmy Rossum has a place in my heart, she was my entire childhood xD.
Sierra was also beautiful, they're both my favourites
ScarJon SAMEEEEE
same here. it was the first phantom movie i watched so its like the original to me. & gerard is so hot lol
Kaleigh Adams can’t sing though
Same grew up with phantom 💜 love Emmy
and let's be real here, Ryan killed it haha
Neeko Freeman Right? I was not expecting that.
He sure did! But why did he add an n-sound?
idahval might be an easier transition for him
I didnt like his heavy breathing -_-
I would breathe heavily too if I was singing on the edge of my vocal range
Emmy and Sierra. Such youthful, playful and light sound. But that c6 goes to sierra anyday, wow

AGREED!!
Though sierra is not my favorite her think of me is one of the best imo
I was so blown away that I'm spending my restaurant allowance for April on a second showing :).
keep in mind that the audio recording on most of these is of very low quality
I think the ones that hit the notes at a higher level were good if it was clear and not sounding like they were screaming it out.
Haven't even looked at any comments yet and I already know everyone is gonna be screaming about Sierra
Some of them lowkey sounded like car alarms and it annoyed me
Sierra voice wise was the best fit for Christine but I’d say Emmy Rossum was the best fit personality wise and visual wise
@@lupipdm Sierra is my favorite Christine but gurl, Emmy did well.
~:~
Jackie only reaches Bb5
Natalie Harshman I agree 100%
Natalie Harshman I think the weird ocean setting and the recording just don’t go well together
Sierra will always be my favorite. She’s so resilient and breathtaking. All these girls are so talented but Sierra’s the queen
The guy has the special mention, no matter what. He sounds effortless though it must be a huge effort to reach those high notes for him, BRAVO!!!!
He sounds like a castrado!!!!
I love Sierra's version here, but Brightman's second round does take the cake for me. :)
A lot of them read more Carlotta than Christine - definitely misses the interpretation of the character
emily 🌸 I think Sierra, Sarah, and Ali are the best imo
I don't know who Carlotta is. BUT, I did hear Christine is supposed to be a very gentle and nice girl. And nearly all of these sound pretty, but ALSO AGRESSIVE. Christine is supposed to be one of them, not both.
@esdrasgu a fellow reader *finger guns*
I grew up on the OLC and Sarah Brightman's version, but Sierra Bogguss's is just about even for me. Part of what others miss is the character development. Christine is unsure of her talent and this is a wake-up call. To be too over the top is to fail to get that. There's a great interview with Philip Quast where he discusses singing Javert's Suicide that is very much about how singing the material in character influences how it's sung.
There are several times I’ve listen to that song on repeat (norm Lewis will ALWAYS be my Javert) to get into character
i really love how rossum captures the sweetness of christine but objectively the best is probably sierra or ali
Sierra and Emmy where both amazing.
Emmy had a sweet innocent lighter voice that I love and Sierra hit that note beautifully😍
I like both Sierra Boggess and Emmy Rossum.
Patty Teusink me too
Patty Teusink same
Patty Teusink I like Sarah as well as Emmy and siarra top three😃
Same feeling
1000% agree
Honestly Sierra will always be my Christine
I'm quite fond of Emmy and Sierra. :)
Ryan Lowe can sing higher than me
He can sing higher than most sopranos
Me too. I’m crying internally
Saw Sierra Boggess sing this live two years ago and I'm still recovering from her gorgeous voice. Unforgettable singer.
You’re so luckyyyyy🥲
sierra. it's not even a debate
sergio vela literally.
Ryan x3, Ryan was good x3.
if anyone says sierra is not at the top, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU
Agreed
Agreed. Wholeheartedly.
Sierra!
And yes, I know Mozart didn’t write Phantom of the Opera. I simply used Mozart to make a point.
Can we all just take a minute to appreciate Ryan Lowe, he can hit that note!😁👌👍
He uses falsetto but it's very good!
Sierra, it's obvious. Even Andrew Lloyd Webber himself even says so
The same Andrew LLoyd Webber that plagiarized his most famous works from previous composers, and even from early 1970's Pink Floyd?
and the same andrew llyod webber that said sarah was his christine...and then he said emmy was his christine...and then i think he said nicole was his christine for a while
Briana Hale but has Andrew Lloyd Webber heard every single Christine or seen every professional productions of Phantom? I don’t think he has so he can’t have an opinion on that since there are some he possibly has never heard. But I do agree, Sierra Boggess was the best in this montage.
He has said that countless times lol - the man does what he needs to sell the tickets (wasn’t Sierra on Bway when he said so?) More recently he said the Dutch Christine was his favourite, but tbh I think it’s disrespectful to say regardless.
Maria He definitely has a soft spot for those two, but there are many other Christines and Phantoms he also loves. I don’t think he has any “favourites” so to speak.
Ryan Lowe is amazing! it's amazing for male singers to get that high. bravo!! but the best is obviously Sierra
Sierra. Change my mind: the royal Albert Hall version is the best, even the the chandelier didn’t crash
80% of the comments are about Sierra
I feel like some of them were like ah ah ah ah ah ah, while Sierra's was ahahaha, meaning more smooth and connected. I don't know, I just liked that better. It seemed to have more fluidity and beauty in her version. But they are all very talented!
sierra, i can't even believe this is a question. webber even said so himself
How does sierra’s sound so youthful and effortless? Everyone else just sounds so old or like carlotta
how can everyone sound "so old" when they're not? lmao, y'all sierra stans are clearly mentally challenged
It doesn't matter if a Christine sounds too old!
Christine is meant to be an opera singer. If at 21-25 she sounds like a sweet little girl they would never let her sing opera. Christine must be a sweet girl with a gigantic voice.
@@boundary2580 The opera genre is not defined by gigantic voice. Go look up "true coloratura"
Kim Apuzzo Jackie was also agonizingly flat on the high C.
+Inés de Erausquin well to be frank her version (emmy's version) only reaches a Bb5
Jackie Evancho is a child in that clip. Not fair to her to even include her in this comparison with seasoned adults. But, truth be known, Jackie Evancho is capable of hitting higher notes. As for the best, Sierra Boggess does the best version.
True! Sierra is truly amazing!!
@@ceretomer5987Emmy Rossum was 16, though. Wasnt Evancho about 15 in her clip? Both were children/less experienced in singing than all the others featured because of their ages.
Am I only one who though Emmy portrayed Christine the best and her singing fit the characters sweet and innocent nature?
The innocence, but neither the genre nor the attention Christine got for her voice. She's supposed to be this stunning, amazing prodigy singer, fir that I found Emmys performance simply too weak. Not bad, especially compared to the rest of the cast (cough Phantom cough) but not outstanding.
jcm00 I don’t think that she’s the best on this list but purely based off of nostalgia and personal taste she takes the cake for me. absolutely stunning and light on the ears, her interpretation is incredible especially for her age then!!
I do, I liked her sweet vibes it was just perfect for Christine :D
I do, too. 🙂
Agreed! Emmy and Gerard were awesome!!!
Okay, of course Sierra, but can we take a moment to appreciate Ryan Lowe?
KrazyKirstie Yes, please!
Mister Golightly Like, honestly, that is a true queen right there
KrazyKirstie haha yes he is! Mad respect for him no falsetto at all
I think Emmy is the best fit for Christine because of how delicate and innocent she is and how gentle her voice is, but Sierra has the best climax
Good Night have you heard Emmy live?! She's incredible, they just put a little too much auto tune on her voice in the movie
Let’s just say that we need Sierra voice with Emmy appearance lolol
Emmy couldn't project her voice past the first row of an opera house lol probably the worst singer on this list tbh
Good Night well she was 17 you got to give her credit for her having mature voice at that age
Judith Recio it was autotuned. I could tell it was because of how in some songs her voice echoes unnaturally especially with the high notes.
Of course it's Sierra! She's a literal angel! Oh and props to Emmy Rossum she did awsome!!!
Sierra for sure, but I REALLY enjoyed Emmy's take on it
Emmy Rossums version is the best I think because it just makes the high note so much more pleasing. It's like she's not giving in all the way JuSt yet until she hits the big note. I love it
Emma Wallace same
Brightman is a pure tone. Technically insane. She won't allow imperfections. I would bet on her more than someone that can't handle the perfect accuracy on pitch and demonstration on her performances. She's scary accurate and breezes through it all with a single breath. She's QUEEN!!!
still sierra
@@mamapenguin4543 maybe let people have their opinion instead of just telling people Sierra should be their favorite?
Agree with you 100%. Sarah (second attempt in this video) does so many vocal gymnastics here that she truly evokes the spirit of classical opera. Probably the most accurate in terms of historical authenticity of the period. People might say she sounds too overblown like Carlotta, but that's what an opera-going public would expect to hear in those times. I do like everyone else here, too, even Emmy. All styles of singing are welcome to me. I just prefer Sarah in this role. :)
right!!! her and sierra are just 😍😍😍
@@emzzzzzzzzzz Sierra is wonderful. :) I've got to watch that Anniversary DVD sometime.
Sierra Bogges is the best --- hands down.
Just to note: it's not always Bb5. A good number of these singers are hitting C6. It all depends on what key they decide to sing the song in.
Sierra I have to agree is the best Christine there is, tho a shout out to Meghan Picerno who, even tho she's not on here, is also anazing
After 5 minutes of this it just sounds like that audio filter on snapchat that makes you sound like an alien
oh no i can’t i hear it now
No way that a man could sing that high and had a woman singing voice...Ryan Lowe killing it
Actually I know a singer, Dimash :)
Tea Sipper God dawn it. You beat me to it. Dimash is incredible.
@@mangalover0149 ikr!
He wasn't that good, actually-he catches people's attention due to cognitive dissonance alone.
Hi James, I love you so much. Can you sister subscribe to me?
Sierra has the simplicity of Christine best embodied in her performance.
It's a tie between sierra and Emmy, for sentimental reasons lol
Question: I'm doing a video about the main theme climax;
would you guys will want to see: the whole climax("He's there the Phantom of the opera..", till the end) the sustained C6's till the E6, or straight when the key of the song changes till the end? Please note that the longer the video, the more cuts I'll have to make. That being said, if you have a singer recommendation you can leave it below this comment. xoxo 💜
Mister Golightly Just do the key changes to the E6 tbh, that's the one everyone listens for
Mister Golightly okay the E6 at the end of Phantom is pre recorded so it's not that impressive ... and think of me is a mixture of Bb and C ... as the show is actually as top C at the climax the published music was originally a Bb ... so these are all in different keys ...

I like the version sung by Sierra the most. It sounds really clean and her voice is just perfect.
Emmy Rossum has the purest (not cut and pasted) ending.
Sarah Brightman sings in general higher than anyone else, going up to a C6 in both clips, but I don't like her too operatic approach.
Sierra Boggess finishes also on a high C, much more pleasing to the ears.
zamyrabyrd I like the first one...
it's just irritating to see her tongue waggle so much, but the first does sound good. Also the Korean's last note doesn't come through like a knock out punch, but as a natural development of the previous two phrases. Some of the singers deliver the the ending as though it is cut and pasted from Aida but how could it be if the rest of the song is winsome and sweet?
zamyrabyrd remember that the role of Christine Dae Saw was written by Sarah Brightman... thats why she looks more comfortable on it...
I like the low notes in Emmy's before she hits those high notes
zamyrabyrd I too feel like Emmy Rossum's is the best, I feel like she really takes her time at the end unlike the others which to me feels like is what gives it that pure sound. I do think Sierra's is good too but I prefer Emmy's I could be biased because I feel like Emmy can do no wrong lol
I was getting a headache until I got to Sierra's, then I got goosebumps
Jerry He lol don't be shady
it does help that her video got the best mics LOL
pretty sure everything else was recorded from a nasty phone camera
Why do Sierra fans constantly feel the need to drag other Christines? 🤦🏼♀️ Her high C was sharp anyway.
7:02 Sierra is so good it feels like the actors pretending to be audience members in the show are legitimately clapping for her in awe.
Honestly I'm so shook by Rob Lowe's 😂😂
*Ryan Lowe 😂😂😂
Emmy sounds like a real angel, so sweet❤😍
Emmy Rossum though.
okay, we know Sierra is goddess but y'all can't be throwing shade to the rest of these fabulous ladies.
let's be real here.
Neeko Freeman Emmy Rossum will always be my fave
And men cough
I feel that Sierra was the best. She wasn't showing off, her voice was smooth and her vibrato was beautiful.
My least favorite was Jackie Evancho and Christine Allado. I knew that Jackie's was auto tuned, and it made it sound unnatural. Plus, she was very flat and it made me cringe. I honestly don't like her as a singer in general.
I disliked Christine because she was trying WAY too hard at the beginning. All of those extra high notes gave me a headache and I was just waiting for her part to be over.
Antwondi true!
sierra just soars through the notes! and when she's singing with ramin oh my goodness amazing! she will always be my favorite
Sierra definitely, she stays true to the original note progression and her acting is amazing but the later version of Sarah is great too. Emmy rossum sounds pretty but way too soft to be portraying an opera singer. Oh and the first one sounded amazing, I didn't like how she hit the ending note though and Jackie though a talented young singer is trying to push her voice to sound much more mature than it is
You hit the nail on the head my friend. Agree 100% in everything you said.
Mister Golightly I think it ruins the overall atmosphere when people hit the highest note in the beginning of the climax, it's supposed to surprise you that she can sing THAT high.
Right? You have to be able to create a climax, not burst into it.
Sierra is the best but Ryan killed me 😮😵😀😂
Sierra’s voice is just so pure and clean, no fancy needed!!! She is Christine!
Ooo, Sierra, but I always loved that very pure sound Emmy has in the film. And original Sarah.
Sierra for sure, but emmy was hands down the best fit personality-wise for christine
Sierra's voice reminds me of Aurora in "Sleeping Beauty"...
Yes Mary Costa ♡♡
The I wonder song?
Am I the only one who thinks she should be Aurora in a Sleeping Beauty musical?
Maybe I'm (shameless)ly biased, but Emmy Rossum.
Jenn Tharp Shameless is THE POO!! Ha Ha And I like Emmy as Christine a lot.
Hey! How bout that Gerard Butler!!!!
😉
Yessssssssss
Emmy will always be my favorite as well
Nooooo 😭😭
Jenn Tharp let her sing in the orignal key and then we talk😂
when a dude can sing a better soprano than you
coming from a soprano one this is true and sad
I am soprano 1 and usually am one of maybe 2 girls to take the highest note when I do musicals and I can say after hearing Ryan Lowe sing better soprano than I will ever achieve....I quit! 🙅🏼♀️😂
Counter tenors are freaking amazing!
yeah but he took a breath in the wrong place and it bother me lol
In my school chorus the highest voice is done by a guy, he sings even higher than the soprano girls in the chorus.
Sad thing he is 13, wonder what will happen when puberty kicks in

bro that’s horrendous 🤮
WAY too many runs... good golly
runs are good in moderation, but that.. barf
One of the worse ones I was referring to. Vocal mellisma/runs are used to hide the fact they can't hold a steady and are trying to show off (it actually does the opposite!). Sing it straight or not at all!
And that c6 was flat
Oh yeah I hate that
Oh my god she was so flat😖
I REALLY LIKED HER
How amazing is that this video has reached over 100k views?! I can not believe it, seriously. It's my second video to reach this amount and I can not thank you enough really. Mister Golightly can you do this for "Thank Goodness"?
I think Sierra Boggess is the best! So effortless!
Mister Golightly omg please please make who sang the “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” Climax
Boy, with all respect for the rest of the singers: They cannot compare to Sierra's majesty and skills.
Jackie Evancho because she teleports while doing it.
I'm screaming 😂😂😂😂
Lol
Sierra for sure. she had the best vocal quality. Second is Sarah Brightman, but Sierra is technically better
Jackie is to edited and isn’t even opera
Here is Jackie singing it live and The Phantom isn't actually opera. instagram.com/p/BrbvXn9HLDS/
Yes, it is a Broadway song that is suppose to pass as an opera song for the musical play.
@@teresa6832 It's a pop song. It just happens to have fifteen seconds of opera at the end.
Sarah Sheppeck it might not be entirely opera but it’s DEFINITELY not pop lmao
@@neni8169 It is, though, lmao. Operatic pop is a genre, and it happens to be the genre of the show. Andrew Lloyd Webber has even referred to the two songs he released as singles, the title track and "All I Ask of You," as pop singles.
So.
Come on... ALL OF THEM ARE WINNERS. They all hit the high notes. And I wish I could too...😅
Sierra will always be the best Christine Daae
Angie Salazar that's because you ignore foreign versions... Why don't you start this video again and try to listen to the first one... She's the best in my opinion
Beatrice Levi You can't always force someone to like who you like. If the first one is the best for you then keep it to yourself. No need to be forcing others to say that she's the best too
Denniel Escoto who said I'm forcing her? I told her to reconsider the first one. And I did say "In my opinion"
Denniel Escoto umm shouldn't you be saying that to everybody here? Everybody's saying Sierra's the best and I say I have a different opinion so you start bitching to me how I should keep it to myself? Just admit I won the argument
Beatrice Levi there's no need to be rude. Everybody's have different opinions. You should probably wrote a comment apart of hers to express your personal opinion to avoid this misunderstanding :) And Kim is indeed one of the best.
