This guy's knowledge of bio- mechanics, thoroughness to detail, eye for nuances and teaching skills are amazing and he is right: shoes designed for stability (such as the Brooks, New Balance, Apopos, Hoka models, etc, which address arch, pronation, supination issues) redirect the gait to create less pressure on joint angles, especially already deformed, inflexible and weaker ones...
I went through the New Balance and Saucony shoes and still literally limping around until I got Gravity Defyer Mighty Walk shoes. I will never be without them again. It stopped my pain within 15 minutes of putting them on. A lifesaver for me.
@@mrnobodyjo um, my feet aren't my major problem. I have SI joint dysfunction, spinal stenosis and muscle damage in my hip. I wear custom orthotics to keep my left leg from swinging inwards as I walk. Foot pain was just from shoes manufactured to be gimmicky instead of just offering a proper amount of cushioning and a proper protection of foot as it moves thru the strike path of walking. Hope that helps.
Walked and ran for 67 years with flat feet. Last 15 years, chronic back, hip pain. Went to a podiatrist who gave me custom orthotics to correct my flat feet. After 6 months started getting lateral knee pain right side. After 12 months of lateral knee pain, removed the orthotics. During those 12 months of orthotics use, I lost the downward movement of my big toe on the painful leg side. Podiatrist told me you don't need the big toe to be able to do that. Let's just wait and see if you get that movement back. First I threw out the orthotics, then I threw out the podiatrist. Here's my question: Do I need to correct my flat feet or is it just too late in life to make structural changes? Still have a raging lateral knee pain that the ortho doctor attributes to IT Band weakness.
Lateral knee pain from orthodontics is probably because the shoes place you in an exaggerated supinated position. Yes, you can address flat feet because there are muscles in your feet. The exercises are not fun though. For example, my sports medicine therapist gave me one where I invert both my ankles and point my toes to each other. You'll feel the arches cramping up. I'd recommend you visit a sports medicine clinic.
Watching now, but my issue with almost all of the ones mentioned. Toe box.... They are all soooooo narrow. It's more than the arch. I had to go Altra, and Asic. The Asics don't look wide but they opened up in the right places. (My ankle mobility needs work still)
I have extremely flat feet, and in the past I have tried numerous motion control/high cushioning shoes, but to no avail. Then I tried minimalist shoes, Xero, and have never looked back.
It's no coincidence you made this video as I just purchased 2 pairs of XERO sneakers..... I love how you look funny in the motionless pictures but professional and serious in your videos. You’re a good youtuber. Thanks for the information. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Conor, what are your thoughts on barefoot shoes? I've worn them for a year and my legs looks and feels stronger without much change in my workout routine. I"m new here and loving your content.
I’m a Xero shoes user, and definitely a proponent of this type of footwear. When I first started wearing this style, it took a good 6 months, but my arches realigned, strengthened, and lifted, and my feet and calves got a lot stronger. I won’t go back, without a doubt.
There are times when I cannot walk outside barefoot anymore. The concrete can be especially painful on the bursar sacs of my feet. I prefer to train barefoot and still believe it's important to connect with that. But if you're running you need to protect joints and use anything you can for shock absorption.
@@KineticSenseTherapies this is true, which is why barefoot running requires an adjustment of gate. You more or less have to get used to using your tibia as a shock absorber and your hammies to push off. There are a few barefoot running vids that do it better justice, but this saves the need to wear trampolines under your feet to counteract concrete
Lots of good information. I'm curious with the different presentations of high arches what you would do. I've had clients with very pronated taluses with high arches and others with very supinated taluses with high arches and no contact under the 1st met head. Their ground interactions are very different and my interventions to encourage proper foot mechanics are very different. Would you recommend the same kinds of shoes for both very different reasons for having a high arch?
Didn't believe this at first. How can shoes make a difference? I put shoes on instead of walking around indoors in socks. Hip pain reduced immediately. Stunned.
Thanks for the video. I was wondering, I already have custom orthopedic insoles. Does the recommendation still apply? If I get one pair you mention, should I replace the original insole with my customs?
For work I wear shoes with a platform but I find that I am really oriented on my toes in my stance when I wear them. I notice my butt slowly gets flatter when I wear them over time and I am more prone to lower back pain.
Flat surfaces: walk in shoes but test Range of Motion like it said in this video and also see how you feel Grass, unevenground, soft surfaces: barefoot
Unfortunately we don't have original products in our country and we buy them very expensive from amazon because of postage. But we always buy the right and good shoes . Foot is our second heart
The part where are you tied the shoes was hard to see. If there was a close-up view or a drawing diagram it would have been more helpful. I’m still confused about how to tie that loopy thing at the top
I’d honestly like to know Conor’s opinion on weightlifting shoes. I don’t think they are a necessity, but why not look for a shoe that provides a solid base when performing certain lifts? A shoe that doesn’t allow for any type of give or rocking, like a running shoe would? Additionally, how well do these shoes work for someone with poor ankle mobility? What if they need to elevate their heels? Would it be possible to pair a great everyday shoe with a solid lifting shoe?
I’m a gardener and have to wear steel toe and mid shoes all day. I have definitely seen a worsening of my knee and hip issues 😢 any recommendations for how to counteract this?
I'm a gardener as well. I use vivobarefoot trail shoes. You can get leather ones that provide adequate protection. I don't agree that you need to wear steel toes.
Don't but it if you plan to walk on hard, flat surfaces. It will bring you more pain, and won't help you at all. For me, wearing Vivobarefoot, causet left hip pain and constant pain in the right neck area. Use the shoes which he indicated in the video. NB 860 works great for me, Since I wear them, pain has gone and I can finally rotate each direction.
I don’t understand why any cushioned shoes with a heeldrop is better than barefoot shoes? For better posture WHY would you recommend shoes that makes your feet less free and with support?
Because what you’re saying is not necessarily true if barefoot shoes Were the ultimate answer ,Then, why not just go barefoot? Well, for one reason different people have different needs because of their posture, etc. etc. plus I would assume that primitive man started making footwear for a practical reason , I personally love barefoot shoes, but sparingly the posture experts can explain it better than myself
If your foot biomechanics are a mess or you lack femur or tibia IR etc unfortunately barefoot shoes are not going to magically resolve that. As he mentions in the video people must continue to work on these issues. If you had flat feet, simply sticking on barefoot shoes could make things worse. When it comes to shoes its not a case of one size fits all (pun very much intended). For the average person the shoes mentioned in the video are probably a safer bet until they get their house in order.
Any recos for work shoes? Steel toe safety shoes for warehouse workers? I work in a warehouse and this content really just shifted the way I preactivate and cool down after work
Love the advice. Does a lot of this translate directly more or less to shoes for sports? There are more things to consider, like the type of movements being done, but I think the same principles could apply.
Hi, Can you make a video for ankle sprain? I had ankle sprain very badly nearly broken of my ankle at 2022 and today I had semi ankle sprain re again during walking. It was not like the first one my it did hurt pretty much.
the shoes you show have a high heel, and a lot of patting; isn't that gonna make your anterior pelvic tilt worse? if your foot needs to feel the ground, why not just recommend barefoot shoes? don't you need a thin sole to get that feedback going?
What if you overpronate or have orthodics? And do you recommend to always wear shoes? I don't wear shoes in my house. I usually do exercises at home barefoot.
I have light feel sketchers very comfortable to wear was my favourite shoe..it makes me walk like a weirdo :) which makes me very sad and helpless not knowing how to fix it. Hi Conor, I have a new client who has been born with one leg shorter than the other. She has been given ‘modern’ footwear that have platform insoles to level the the legs. What would your recommendation be when working with someone like this? She has terrible alignment
I can appreciate not wanting to be restrictive in your recommendations but wearing a high heel shoe is going to force the wearer to compensate to get the center of mass in an efficient place. Nothing in my opinion corrupts a woman’s strength more than high heeled shoes. With so much pelvic floor issue, it’s important to get the word out.
Hi sir Connor, would like to ask, why would people with regular arched foot still need/can still benefit from these shoes? If someone has regular arched feet, doesn't that mean that the feet isnt the problem?
I'm looking for shoes that don't have any heal rise but do have a wide toebox. I tried barefoot shoes but I can't wear them for hours on my feet at work. Any suggestions?
