I mentioned where I bought some really nice and inexpensive annual starts. If anyone is within a short or reasonable distance of Interlaken NY there is an Amish store called Country Side Market. 3215 Munson Road, Interlaken.
607-532-9255 is their number and Daniel is the greenhouse manager.
You can show up whenever to see their normal amazing selection of starts, flowers and other nursery stuff along with a store with seeds and bulk items at really low prices, but you can call Daniel to ask about their leftover/older flats. They sell them around $10 a flat for up to 50 starts of beautiful annual seedlings. Sometimes he'll have 20+ flats that need to find homes.

I was going to say the same thing. We're often advised to look for used items that are being tossed out but I think this is the first time on TH-cam that the message was kinda reversed.
I harvested my meager garlic in zone 5 today. Just a few were left after pest invasion, they weren't growing much and I thought I could better use the space. I scored some tomatoes for $.25 and was thrilled!! I ended up with 9 plants for dollar due to a couple 3&4 packs. They are small, but I hopeful for a late frost. I would have been overly giddy if there were more to choose from, I would have danced for your cabbage plants. LOL! Thanks for sharing your bounty!

Nice to give the Amish a shout out. Lots of negative talk about them these past years it’s ridiculous; wonderful folk and they are great neighbors to have. May your season be bountiful sir.
Just like I can't speak about the home life in a positive or negative way about any store I go to, I can't do that with these folks either. There are kids that work at the store and I get a strong sense of respect and appreciation from the parents and sense of pride and responsibility from the kids and with the superficial sense I can get from being there it feels healthy and good.

(I been mincing up garlic scapes, from the plants I grew this year from your seed, and adding to my breakfast potatoes. Heaven.)
I can't wait to purchase some seed garlic and hopefully some very cutting starts from you I have started small because my climate is so different, still amazing to see all your hard work coming to fruition

For composting the garlic, you could consider a carbon/nitrogen balanced winterkilled cover crop like cowpeas and oats. The mulch from that should break down nicely.

i really like the idea of hot composting for crops grown at large scale in relative uniformity to help deal with pests+disease because stuff like that is the most at risk for it and if this way of living were to ever become popular that's almost just a way of being a good neighbor, making sure you're not creating good conditions for pests of what are likely staple foods
Love how easily you grow your tree seedlings - patchy or not, still a very productive space!

That seems like a great idea. I might have to try planting tree seeds in between my garlic this fall. Maybe the funk of the garlic keeps some critters away?

In this field we haven't had issues with slugs, but in general we don't have any good way to manage them, we just keep planting until things work!

Damn! You are pretty much a farmer now! What are your thoughts on cabbage butterflies? If i dont cover with remay, the larvae destroy my crops

Trouble. I lose a lot of brassica harvest to them.
Somehow we're getting to be pretty farmery these days. We get the cabbage moth but sometimes it isn't too bad. Hopefully enough predatory insects will come and help us out. We'll have to see how it all unfolds!
Awesome videos! I was curious if you crop rotate and if you do. Are there certain crops you plant after other crops?
We like to keep moving crops as much as is reasonable. No very particular rotation just try to keep it novel as much as possible

Forgive me if I've missed this over the years, but how do you organize your work? Since it's more than you can eyeball from any single place, how do you make sure you don't forget about something time-critical, or just run out of time and energy to attend to it?
I think it's practice/integration more than anything. For better or worse there are no notes, no records, no formalized plans or scheduling. Each day the hope is things are kept up with enough for what needs to happen!
Love your vids honestly how much time and how many people are weeding I've got a 60''x 40' garden and its too much even with mulch and hand pulling when I can 🤔
Have you seen blue jays in your fields? They hit our young stone crop seedlings really hard in early to mid spring: pulling and eating the kernels. And they definitely learn where to forage across years...
Haven't had blue jays in this field (yet!) so we didn't lose those plants to them, but I've seen that in the past. I wonder if co-planting with garlic with those types of trees in the fall could help avoid that loss?
Will you be selling any of the corn seed?
We won't be. You can search for 'Tuscarora White Corn' to get a sense of it. We are planting it mainly to have a backup for our friends if they ever needed the seed back.
I like to think that every seed I plant that doesn't grow feeds the soil.
I'm trying to grow cuttings in containers with annuals.
Normally I forget to water my cuttings but I'm hoping the annuals keep my attention by rewarding me with food.
That is a sweet idea to integrate cuttings into annual context... I forget to water the annuals so I don't know if it would help me but I love the idea :)

Garlic and everything looks fantastic. How do you deal with black onion fly in your garlic? Please do more info on the electric BCS and the batteries your friend makes .
I haven't seen or heard of Black Onion Fly. I'm familiar with Allium Leaf Miner and that is a character we have to keep a close eye on, but not the fly you mention.
I'll make some time to show the BCS off, it's a pretty neat tool

"GROW THE WEEDS YOU WANT" few weeks before planting over seed with chia, radish, arugula ect... then harvest plugs where you plant other crops 🍅 ect.. eventually only weeds you have are WEEDS U WANT
I'd love to know, how many garlic scapes did you harvest and how are you preserving them? It looks like it would be an absolutely massive amount!
We donated most of them. We enjoyed them as fresh eating and shared some with friends, but donating the bulk is easiest

You did not mention if you have any trouble with Colorado Potato Bugs ? I’m also in the Finger lakes region, and I have them many years . I hand pick 🤢 and throw into soapy water. If you have any issues I’d love to hear your strategy. Thanks.

Curious about the electric BCS! Did you do an electric conversion on a gas engine model?
We need to make a video about it, but it was someone I met who was skilled enough to do the transformation.
I had spotty germination this year due to , I think, drought.
I think that had a huge influence on a lot of things!

In a totally unrelated topic, and I realize it’s barely summer, but do you foresee having any Goumi’s or Seaberries for sale this coming fall? Can’t find Goumi’s anywhere locally in WV. Local nurseries never even heard of them. Lol.

Unfortunately we won't be doing any fall shipping this year since we'll be having a new little one sometime in early October. Perhaps we'll have limited numbers for next spring. I hate to continually push further out on it but they have been hard for us to propagate for some reason lately

Thanks for the video, I didn't know garlic got a disease, I have been planting it under fruit trees, and just leaving it there for the most part instead of picking it. Do you think that would be problematic?
It is a nice companion to trees for sure. There are diseases and allium leaf miner and other pests that can interrupt their growth after a while, so they may fade out over time but thats OK

Have you had to deal with Allium Leafminer yet? We noticed it for the first time this year and seems like we're going to have to harvest our garlic a bit earlier this year. Hopefully they store well, it's discouraging because that pest wasn't even in North America until 8 years ago! Hope you don't have to deal with it, it's really reduced our onion and garlic yield this year
It is starting to exist more and more, so we are coming up with a way to inspect heads as they are harvested and kill any we find. So far the numbers are super low, but its something we'll have to definitely actively manage for over time
@@edibleacres That's good to hear they're low there. Hopefully it stays that way. We went from 0% last year to VERY noticeable this year here in Rhode Island. I've heard early spring row cover works well
Did you say you might have to rotate crops in this space because of some type of garlic disease?
Fusarium is a fungal issue that can develop over time if you have garlic grow in the same place over and over again. We like to move them if/when possible.

It would be interesting to know how, or if, the radiation coming from the high tension wires has any affect on what grows beneath them. 🤔 The same people who want us to sit on an electric car battery also tell us to not hold a mobile phone against our heads... Just some random thoughts. Love this channel!
