    I couldn't tell any difference. But what i did hear was your sax playing sounded so much better than mine. Which puzzles me because i have been playing for such a long time. since at least November 2021. Must check my reed.

    One component of the test that can't come across is how the reed feels. Reeds often sound a lot more similar than they feel. Reeds that play effortlessly are always preferable to ones that fight back. interesting to hear how little difference there is. Choosing a lower strength seem important. Why don't they re-label them to match cane product numbers? Great video.

    Thanks for another great video! After struggling with reeds for 30 years I'm using Legere exclusively now. I've had two tenor reeds for 6 months with no noticeable changes, and it's great to be able to just play and not worry about warming them up or adjusting them.

    I immediately noticed the difference in the tenor blind test and got it right on the first try! C sounded more lively, natural and better harmonics so that was the cane reed for sure, B sounded stuffy, muffled, dull so that was obviously the Signature and A sounded brighter than B but not as natural as C so it was the American cut. I can tell that because I used legere and vandoren java red recently. By the way, great playing Jamie!

    I love the Legere Reeds and use them as well on alto as un tenor.
    For a player who switches the Instruments an a concert and knows it works in every condition this is for me key.

    Thanks for doing this Jamie. On Tenor, C sounded most aggressive. I couldn't tell much difference between B&A, but B sounded a little darker. Last year, for my Rock&Roll and R&B gigs, I've been playing a Legere American Cut 2.75 coupled with a high baffle mouthpiece with an 8 tip opening. Lots of edge which I like for this style. After gigging where I'm playing hard the sides of the reed seem to be visibly damaged where they contact the mouthpiece side rails. The damaged reed still sounds fine.

    I changed to Légère Signature 2.25 on my Alto and love it improved my sound greatly. Loving your videos going to start your scales videos.

    Picked out the tenor again (my instrument) but couldn’t pick out a diff on the Bari 🤷‍♂️. I preferred the Am cut to the Classic on tenor. Definitely going to check out the Legere reeds myself. Tks for the expt!

    I was able to tell what one was cane on alto tenor and bari each. Only one that fooled me is soprano.

    I could definitely tell which was the cane reeds on both videos. But I do agree with you the tone was very similar between them on the bari and soprano. Xxx

    Another great informative video Jamie. I for one really appreciate the time and effort you and other online sax tutors put into helping us all. I have swapped entirely to legere American cut on my 4 saxes. I was fed up of buying boxes of reeds and half of them were unplayable for me. I used to spend ages with razor blades trying to get cane reefs to work. But why should we have to do that in this day and age? I find legere reeds very consistent. But I did see a guy on TH-cam saying about dunking a legere Reed in boiling water for just a second to make it even more playable, and I have found this works! They are then soooo easy to blow! I would be interested in your views on the other synthetic reeds, especially the harry Hartman ones which Johnny Ferreira uses on TH-cam. Thanks again mate!’

    I'm an amateur player who doesn't get to play as much as I'd like. I've found the Legere reed great on my Tenor. I can leave it on the stand after cleaning and just pick it up and play when I've got a gap and it plays well right from the first note. The only thing I find with a synthetic reed is any moisture tends to sit on the reed rather than get absorbed by a cane reed. I have to make sure I suck on the reed regularly to keep it in good condition.

    Just a few quick comments, and thank you for the video!
    First I didn't even notice you were switching between reeds. I thought they were different camera angles or something. Goes to show how much I was paying attention and/or how much I needed more tea this morning. On my phone I couldn't notice a difference in sound.
    Then I go back to remembering my school days of buying one reed at a time, or riding a reed way too long after it died, or seeing friends keep playing a chipped and cracked reed a week or two before replacing it. I'd have to think that students would have an easier time learning and playing with something that's consistent reed to reed, and/or something that lasts a little longer. I understand there are other issues, costs, etc, with synthetic, but it seems like a great way to remove another variable from playing. I mean for goodness sake we weren't buying boxes at a time, and blaming a whole brand for a few bad reeds.
    Fast forward 20 years since school and I'm picking up the horns again, Bari reeds made it a lot easier. I don't have to worry about a bad reed, I don't have to buy boxes of each strength to figure out where I'm at or what works best with what mouthpiece, and the horns are ready to be played whenever without messing around with a reed. I get that there are drawbacks, and eventually I may go back to real reeds, but for now it's made my life a lot easier.

    I think the cane sounded great on every horn. And all those cane reeds, they used to photosynthesise!!! Makes me love em even more!!!

    In the blind tenor test I couldn't tell the difference between A & B but C definitely sounded livelier for want of a description. A & B were kind of stuffy by comparison. As I expected C turned out to be the cane reed. Had you only played the synthetic reed (without a cane comparison) I would have just thought it's Jamie sounding awesome as usual. On bari I couldn't tell the difference between any of them. I suspect that the HR mouthpiece on bari possibly being darker than the metal on tenor may have had something to do with evening out the sound. Just a wild guess. Thanks for the test.

      I could tell the Legere ones on tenor because the cane one just seemed to have more openness to the sound. The signature sounded very compressed, almost like it was a synth. In a marching band situation, it would be great, but as a soloist, it might not stand out as well.

    Thank you , on your tenor I dug the Java & American cut . On the bari the Java & Sig cut . I play both the Signature cut and American cut on tenor , but the Java green box for me is hard to beat . Take care , be safe and kick ass !

    Thanks Jamie.Using headphones I just about picked the Java on tenor, but I couldn’t pick the Java on baritone, but I can tell a slight difference between the two Legere reeds. I have used both Legeres on tenor and alto and I prefer the AM cut for both.

    i got two Legere Signature reeds for bass clarinet a couple years ago at Christmas time. I was concerned that my cane reed would dry out waiting for my turn to play. With a Vandoren reed I get a massive low end out of my old Jean Barre horn. I lost a bit of that with the Legere reed. I need to pull on of those out and strap it on a tenor sax, the reeds for tenor sax and bass clarinet are almost identical.

    Have been using 2.75 Legare for couple years and love them. Started with Signatures but have switched to the American Cut because they seem to be effortless right out of box. No soaking, great storage container and last a long time. I did experience a small crack in the middle just back from the tip after prolonged playing. It's the only way to go for me. Everyone sound exactly the same so there's no more favorite stacking.

    As a beginner with little understanding of saxophone sound I was drawn to reedoligy to explain why my sound was crap. After 2 years I switched and use American cut 2.25 , so now I can concentrate on playing and practicing not faffing around with good or bad cane So there it is synthetic forever cane never again.

    I messed around with my cane and synthetic and as a result I got it right and spotted the difference when you played. When I played mine it played not as rich with the synthetic.

    Another great vid. For my 2 cents - on bari my normal reed is Rico Plasticover #2 but a number of years ago I tried two types of BARI S reeds that were awful. Both labelled 'soft' they were so rigid and the edges cut into my lips and were unplayable. Then when the Silverstein Ambipoly Alta Jazz reeds came out I got a #2 but that was still too hard until I 'modded' it (I now see they do them as #1.5) and now that is my regular reed on a Jody Jet 8 mpc (I would recommend this reed). With the recent TH-cam vids, last week I bought a Legere Signature #2 and American Cut #2. Both are bright and loud (good!) but the Signature is more bright and slightly buzzy. They are not as hard as I had expected but I will probably soften them slightly and then I agree with you that there would be very little difference compared with my standard cane reed.

    Bari sax is my main instrument and I could easily tell from your blind tests which one was the cane reed. I tried Légère signature reeds for quite a while and I'm not happy with them - their overtone spectrum is just not the same as with cane, and you can hear scratchy noises at certain frequencies. Also an important factor you didn't speak about is feel (embouchure) - they seem much harder and less controllable than a cane reed. As a substitute in case of emergency or difficult humidity conditions, however, Légère reeds for bari are ok.

    Don’t have a baritone sax yet, 😉 but when I try to play Harlem nocturne I use my tenor and the American cut legere reed.
    But I will also keep experimenting with the other reeds.

    I feel the normal reed is freer vibrating. I play Legere on alto because it makes me practice. As I do not have to soak the synthetic reed.

    Around 7m40s you mention the little cracks to watch out for... I see a couple of these in my Signature 2.7 alto (it's about a year old, but I won't be gigging as hard as you). In January, I went back to cane because I 'hit a wall' in a cold, outside gig... wasn't blaming the reed for that, but it hadn't occurred to me that: are the little visible cracks indicative of a problem? There's no visible split in the reed (it's like a stretch mark) but you got me wondering... Thanks for any input !

    It would have been nice to hear a subtoned ballad. Personally I find Legere American Cut harder to subtone but more consistent fulltone than cane though less warm, less expressive.
    Interestingly, I have the opposite reaction to you as regards relative strength. For me, a Legere 3.00 suits my GetaSax Slant 8* on which I otherwise play D'Addario Select Jazz 2M. Similarly on both clarinet and soprano I play significantly higher numbers on synthetic than cane versus supposed comparison tables. On Soprano, I use Aizen 9 mouthpiece with Legere 2.75 or cane D'Addario select jazz 2M/2S depending on individual reed actual strength. On clarinet, Jody Jazz 6 mouthpiece with Legere Euro Cut 2.50 vs Vandoren traditional 1.5.
    I personally find Legere much more playable. I can dial in the exact quarter strength and it will be consistent. Cane is always warmer and more expressive for me but less consistent and harder to play.

    Okay, after watching/listening to your video a few times (trying to put my biases aside), and never having tried the American Cut, I decided to take the plunge and give it a try. In the past, the Signature didn't really do it for me. I typically play Rigotti Wild and BSS (2.5) on a Drake FG tenor mouthpiece. The Americal Cut (2.25) played and sounded almost identical, maybe better. With that, and the Legere reeds eliminating variability between reeds, I'm pretty sure I'm a convert. Thanks for the video...and all your other super informative videos.

    Definetely can hear the difference on tenor. Nothing bad about any of the three, just a matter of individual taste. However, personally I agree to the point that "there is just a little something more" we get from the cane reeds.

    I've been using a Legere American Cut on tenor for a while as I've still been getting back into playing after a looooong hiatus. At first I felt the Legere didn't have that same "sizzle" as a cane reed. Response was wonderful and smooth and the reed was perfectly reliable... but just seemed lacking in that top end feel. After a few months playing, however, it seems like it livened up some. Like it is finally broken in and vibrating more freely. On the downside, it also feels like it got a bit softer feeling too. It might just be my chops re-developing though. Just curious as to if you've had a chance and noticed any change over time with these Legere's. Even not "broken in", I really am happy with it. As you said, the reliability of just knowing it is going to work is amazing and any lacking sound is ... not really that lacking. Great video again! Also... thanks for the clear, un-EQ'd version of your playing for that pure listen!

    Got to admit I couldn't telll the difference on either horn but I'll be staying with cane reeds. It's taken years and a lot of dosh experimenting with different combinations of mouthpiece/reed but now I've got as close to the perfect setup as I can find I'm in the happy zone and aint going to change. Cane is cool!

    I picked out the cane for each one - the sound has more texture to it, the harmonics are richer overall...but that doesn't mean you can't get a good sound from a synthetic reed. I'll probably try one out eventually...

    Once again, for Tenor I preferred the cane reed. Not sure if it's the strength but for Bari I actually preferred the Signature. The cane reed was a close second but it was interesting how I unanimously preferred the cane but the signature's don't hold back.

    Thanks for the Comparison video Jamie! And the method which you are going about them is just great, by the way.
    I too choose C as my favorite sound on tenor, and also couldn’t tell the difference on bari.
    But I am actually a long time Fibracell user on alto, tenor, and bari, more out of necessity than sound. Basically, cane reads split at the tip after one or two sessions of playing on them. I don’t know what it is about how I play but they barely last beyond my warmups! (could it have anything to do with my high school band teacher making me play 4 strength reeds on clarinet?) Fibracells last me a few months each before the tip finally splits. The only horn I don’t have a problem with this is on clarinet, maybe because there’s so much smaller. I’ve never read anyone else’s comments anywhere alluding to this problem, only that synthetic reeds simply last longer.
    Plus they are not too bright for me, people even complement me on my tone in particular. I also like the extra projection.
    So while I have been curious about Legere and almost bought one, I will continue contentedly spending half as much on Fibracells. (I’m sure I will try Legere some time, But first I really need to buy you a coffee!)

    Could hear the difference across both Horns ,easy to tell which was the cane Reed in both cases , as always am cut is a step up in tonal quality over sig...and yes fibracell are bright 🌞..

    Can you help Jamie?......injured my mouth in skiing accident....stitches in bottom lip....2 teeth displaced....can't play sax for who knows how long while I heal.....anything I can be doing sax wise while I can't actually blow ....so frustrated. Angus

    Another amazing Video. And the best reed shoot out on the net. Today I used a different approach when listening. Not which is synthetic or which is cane. But which did I like best? Which would work best for me. On Tenor, I chose the American first, the Java second and the signature a very clear third. I like a bright sound for Rock Pop. So well done to those who can tell the difference between cane and synthetic. But frankly I don’t care. I will continue to play all three, depending on the genre. I actually think the American is easier to play than cane. The altissimo (I wish you had commented on your impressions Jamie) on the American that I have is not great, so I am going to move up a few strengths, in the hope it gets better. Légère do a Studio Cut. I went in to detail about it last week and in a reply to Ich Bin Martin, today. So check it out if you are a rock sax player. If you like jazz….DONT. What I will say is that all my band mates in two bands now all hate Jamie. They have spent a week suffering reed comparisons. The guitarist is threatening to blind test me on strings…lol. Anyway, for Rock. They love the Studio too. In the band mix, it cuts because it is very bright and edgy. So I am buying three more today. The volume and ease of hitting Altissimo is a revelation with the Studio, even on a 2. How can reeds be so different? Like I say, please read my other comments because there are some trade-offs with the Studio.

    I thought A sounded best on baritone. Not sure why you went up in strength on the bari? I’ve always had to go down in strength on all saxes on Legere reeds.

    On tenor I spotted the Van Doren; it had a warmer sound. On Bari I couldn't hear the difference. (Maybe the Eb instruments can't tell the difference between cane & synthetic - ha)

    I could tell the difference on tenor but not the Bari. I played with the legere reeds for many months on my tenor and when I went back to cane I really struggled to play with them, I found I got to used to playing on plastic and it messed my embouchure up, I’m back on cane again and getting back to normal, much happier playing on cane again!

    Hearing you play them all, the differences are negligible. When I switched to Legere from Rigotti I was struck by how much smoother it sounded. The reason for the change: I got fed up with cane being so different when it comes to altissimo. My two Legere reeds respond the same in that register.

    I thought B on Tenor was the Vandoren cane reed. I was fooled. It seemed the warmest between the 3 reeds.

    At the moment, I’m only playing Tenor and was itching to see how this went. For me I thought the Legere Signature and Vandoren were the two I preferred. The Signature on Your Latest Trick sounds really open and very clear, also had more warmth too, however the Red Box was a bit brighter and I felt it sounded a bit cleaner than the Signature and more presence to it too. I might be persuaded to at least try a Legere Signature as I need something that is solid and can give me exactly what I need at all times … cane is a nightmare for this but synthetic could be the way to go …..
    Thanks a million for this one Jamie and I’d be interested in at least your thoughts if not a video for the clarinet reeds. I’m predominantly a Bb & Eb player for clarinet but have played bass and A too. Can’t afford them all but if my numbers came up in the lotto ..??? Thanks again and look forward to next weeks video !

      Personally, I find Bb clarinet and Legere Euro Cut are really suited. Much easier to get tone consistency throughout range, especially throat notes. Much easier to get exact strength desired due to .25 consistent increments. (Better than Tenor & Legere American Cut).

      @@cliveastle9372 Thanks for that Clive. Do you use the Legere Euro cut for perfomances and classical as well as popular music too ?? I’d be doing that so would love feedback as you are using the Legere. I love the .25 increments too it’s so good to really dial in your preference and especially when you’re using a strength higher than about 2.5-2.75 range. I can imagine the difference can be quite dramatic. As we saw from Jamie’s videos he was using stronger cane reeds at times than the Legere.

    Btw, to me, considering tenor, Am-cut and Java Red sounds very closely, Signature has little bit suffocated sound. But the result is minimal, on gig couldn't be heard. Much more important is the player's feeling and confidence. From this point of view the Legere wins, no doubt.

    Awesome Jamie. When touring and doubling these Legere reeds could be amazing. I always hated picking up a horn when playing outside after five or six tunes and the reed was dried up and warped. By the time a sound engineer adds his opinion and the rest of the band is rocking I don't think anyone can tell the difference. I like the clarinet ones the best LOL and you would think that would be my last choice. Of course on gigs only play it once in a while. While teaching it is nice to have them always play because sometimes I might get through five sax students then a clarinet student. Cheers and keep it up, buddy. We need your enthusiasm these days.

    The sound I liked best, in the tenor test at least, came from the Vandoren cane reed. While I do prefer the sound of a cane reed to a synthetic reed, I use Légère Signature Series reeds and will continue to use them because they’re more reliable and last longer than cane reeds. They’re also more forgiving in that you are less likely to crack or chip them by accident. So while they cost more than cane reeds, they give me - an amateur player - better value. Plus, I don’t lose practice time to preparing and caring for the reed, like you do if you use cane reeds. I don’t have to learn how to use a Reed Geek or otherwise make a poor-playing reed work better. I just quickly wet the synthetic reed, attach it to my mouthpiece and start playing. If I was a pro, I would perform with cane reeds. But I’m not, so synthetic reeds are good enough for me.

    Very difficult to hear a difference! Which says a lot about the Légère reeds! For using mainly Légère on alto and tenor (I have switched from Signature to American cut) I am very satisfied. But still go back to cane at times. The main difference being the feel in the mouth with a good/favorite cane reed! But Légère are so consistent and always ready to be played! 🎶🎵🎷

    Hello Jamie. I have just started playing the Alto sax and having trouble playing in tune. I purchased the tonal energy app and when I used it, no matter what note I am trying play, it says I am playing flat. Is just me or could there be something wrong with the horn as well? I can't signing up for any class from anyone if I am always out of tune. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

    I only listened to the tenor (I don't play bari). To my ears, the cane was definitely better in every way. Both synthetics sounded stuffy and not as responsive. I've tried a bunch of synthetics, hoping I'd like one as much as cane. For me, nothing is as good as cane, but I'm hopeful...some day.

    I was surprised but jepp, I was able to tell the difference. Legere Signature 2.75 won the first round for me.

    I thought the signature sounded best but they were so close I don’t know why you wouldn’t use Légère’s exclusively on tenor? Seems like a no brainier to me. :)

    I got A and didn't like the tone. I thought B was the cane as it produced a great quality tone so for me B was the clear winner. I didn't like C at all.

    Haha! I was going to ask about clarinet/bass clarinet reeds! I've got a Legere traditional and European cut. The latter is good; Michael Lowenstern said they were the best he'd tried. I still opt for cane but the Legere is there for a rainy day on both sax and bass clarinet.

    the cane reed java was (for me) brighter ant the american cut was more "muffled"

    As I wrote week ago, Legere let me to have each mouthpiece and sound under control. O definitelly (until ... I don't know) switched to Am-cut. Strange is, thay people say that in combination of Yanagisawa T5 + Dukoff D Miami Super Power Chamber 7 + Legerr American 2.5 I have nice smooth sound. But I want to have bright pop sound of 80-ties!! 😂😂 What else should I do?
    Jamie, you are great pro player, you will have perfect and controlled sound also using oak board!

      I recorded myself with setup of Otto Link 7* + Vandoren Java Red 2.5, the soud was like in funeral band.

      Hi Martin. Are you German? I am English but studied German at uni. I play a similar set up, 1984 Yamaha 62 purple, and Dukoff D7. I like the same bright sound that you are looking for. Have you tried the Studio cut? It is so different to the American. The American is a revaluation in how easy it is to play, and how it feels. The Studio used to be described on Lègére’s website as "Good for rock". Now they say "good for those who use a lot of vibrato "???. I play in a Springsteen band and 70’s -90’s pop rock band. I was going to move up to a Dukoff D8 for more brightness and edge. Until I discovered the Studio. It is very different from the American. It is not as easy to play. Is really picky about position on the mouthpiece. But in the sweet spot, it screams. I would say about a third louder than the American, brighter and edgier. It flipping screams the high notes with an edgy growl. It has massively improved my altissimo. The volume of altissimo is equal to anything from D to f sharp.
      It takes a couple of days to get used to because it doesn’t feel great compared to cane or the American. On the low end, if your not playing rock or funk, you are not going to be too happy (if you like whispy jazz sounds.) But with your Mouthpiece and what you are trying to achieve, I would definitely give one a try. Here in France, they are much cheaper too. 20 euros versus 30.
      I am concerned that they are being phased out, so I am going to buy 3 more today. I only discovered the Studio 2 months ago. On strength, I play 2.5 Javas and Following the advice, I found that a 2.0 American is too soft. BUT the 2.0 is perfect. Because it hits Altissimo like a cane 3.5!
      I hope that you find this useful because there isn’t much out there on the Studio. Best wishes. John

      @@johnycat7373 Hi Johny, no, I am Slovak. I didn't yet tried the Studio, probably I would. I play sax just 3 years and never played altissimo (I also don't know how to). On OLTE and Christopher Elliott I played cane reeds 2.5-3, mostly Java Red, Java Green and I also tried some others. What did you meant with " I found that a 2.0 American is too soft. BUT the 2.0 is perfect. "please?

      Ok Martin. Sorry for the confusion. I have an American cut 2.0 which is too soft. I probably need a 2.5. My Studio Cut is 2.0 and is perfect for my Dukoff D7. Even if you don’t play Altissimo on the Studio, your high F and F sharp (I am assuming that you have an F sharp key) will be much clearer and more powerful. With an edgy tone that you can growl quite easily . I rarely play Altissimo above G sharp. That is high enough in a guitar band, for the majority of keys that we play in. And no, I don’t play with Springsteen 😂. It’s a Springsteen tribute band 😎. Clarence Clemons (Springsteen) rarely played Altissimo. So he is a good example of what you can do without Altissimo. Check out ‘’Jungle Land ‘’ live and Born to Run for examples. Jungle Land has a solo that is nearly 3 mins long. It’s at a slow tempo and is a great exercise for developing tone. With your sax set up (he played a Dukoff D8 at one time) . With a Studio Cut, you should be right on the money. Holding long notes on the Studio will require good vibrato, or they will die a little. But, playing on a Studio will be like Gym work. It will pay off quite quickly. Because it is so much cheaper than the American, you don’t have much to loose.
      One thing is for sure, you are not going to sound like a Funeral band. Slovakian? I spent a week in Bratislava in 1992. Awesome time. 🍻🍾🎵

      My sax doesn't have high F# key. All of us, me, my sax and mouthpiece are from 1sh half of 70-ties 😉
      I heard the solo on several videos, is great. Would you send me the music sheet please, if you have one? I have just the Real book vol1 and some other notes, all of them are for singers. I would like to learn to play solos.

    I did not like the American cut, I play Legere signature reeds myself, so a good thing to remind me not to order the American cut and stay on the Legere signature and Legere classic reeds.
    Signature and real cane were not so much apart, with a slight preference for cane.
    I play the signature reed myself on baritone, it gives me a good sound, with cane you have to be lucky to have a good one, the best reed of the box will give you a slightly better sound, but all cane reeds sound different, some good, some bad, but the Legere reeds last much longer than cane and give you a predictable good sound.

    The A legere is way too harsh and buzzy. I could tell immediately. The others were more difficult.

    The only thing that matters is what the player feels. I hate synthetic reeds. They don't feel right or have the immediacy that I need. Bah.
