The final moments are one of the most shocking endings I’ve ever seen.
The Thing and this movie both improved on the decent original versions and are still two of my most favorite sci-fi horror movies. I don’t really go for gore these days but these films are more about psychological scares but with very scary effects too!

Oliver Harper's Retrospective Reviews are a rare treat. And I'm a big fan of the Body Snatcher movies.
Why not do a review on "Night of the Living Dead" 1990 remake directed by Tom Savini?

This movie really gives me an unsettling feeling throughout it, unlike most horror movies today.
Agreed,it’s an effective psychological horror film.
If this movie was made today you just know the pod people would all be white.
That's when you know, it's a quality horror film. It's easy to make someone nauseous, it's harder to make them feel true fear.

That final shot is absolutely chilling. My sister can’t stand Donald Sutherland in any movie under any circumstances to this day as a result.

The man face dog gave me major trouser trauma as a youngster. Well scary.
The effects look so bad though if only the face looked like it belonged to the body it would be proper scary.

Me too. I saw this when I was way too young and the dog freaked me out. I had no idea it was just a mask. It makes sense, but still incredibly creepy.

I agree. It's the utter hopelessness of their fight, and the brief hope of hearing music (amazing grace) makes it all the more tragic
In a way that was even more traumatic than the twist ending. I’m sure at that moment Matthew already thought he was alone, we do know that Nancy survived longer, but Matthew didn’t know that. And to experience the woman he loved dissolve into ash in his arms and lose everything she was ever was is the scariest thing. True horror.
One of the best remakes, ever. It's in a small club of remakes that are better than the original.

This is one of the very few remakes that I actually like.
Definitely one of the best remakes. I just love how quiet and dark it is.
Make in such a way it made the unbelievable believable. A 70's cinema classic.
Veronica Cartwright was not given directions in Body Snatchers for the great reveal, and then again in Alien for the chest burster scene. Lol, anything else?

This is the best version of the movie. I go back to it every year or so and enjoy it every time.
The 1955 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is pretty good. The late Sam Peckinpah had a bit part in it. Don Siegel also directed Coogan's Bluff and Dirty Harry.
I like that we get Kevin McCarthy to cameo in the remake to imply his character from the original was still preaching “you’re next!” before he’s killed off
& "Escape From Alcatraz".
I’ve not seen a film handle paranoia as well as this film and The Thing.

That point and shriek lives in my head rent free.
I always saw it as a sorta sequel because of Kevin McCarthy trying to warn people.

Robert duvall as the priest swinging on the swings while watching the children always frightened me,and the scene were Donald Sutherland is sleeping in the garden while the pods hatch and the beings make infant sounds

Definitely still holds up today. Especially it's overwhelming feeling of dread. Scared the crap out of me as a kid.
That dog / human face scene is to this day unbelievably uncomfortable - looks absolutely crazy.

Movies like this make me hate modern remakes. All they do nowadays is just copy the original beat for beat, where as movies like this, The Thing, and The Fly built off of the original to create something new and (arguably) better
The twist ending was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

I only watched this movie recently after spending 30 years of my life being an idiot and it became an instant classic. One of my favorite thrilling horror movies ever.

This is the definitive version of this story.
That image at 14:45 had actually been featured in an EARLIER (1971) movie titled The Mephisto Waltz. The beautiful Brook Addams had stared in another horror film from the same year titled Shock Waves.

My Mum kept reccomending me this movie as a teen, we finally watched it together one night.
It was truely unsettling, the dog face thing messed me up. My Mum was so pleased.
Such a great movie. It doesn't get the attention and coverage it deserves. Had it come out in the 80s I think it would get far more attention now.
Love this version and the ending freaked me out as a kid and still gives me goosebumps. Also never knew the cast didnt know the ending that makes it even better.
Nice to see one of my all time favorite movies get the Oliver Harper treatment. The original is a classic but I always find myself coming back to this version.
It's one of those beautifully shot 70s films that are sadly missed today. Deliberate pacing, quiet moments, building of tension, background clues, and almost art-house framing and camera angles.
Really enjoy this film.
There was an older, “Scream Factory,” collector’s edition release of the movie, back in 2016, but it’s now out of print.

Was that Alex Cox? Theres a bit of nostalgia. I remember him presenting so many weird films late at night on, I think, Channel 4.
Yes he did Moviedrome on BBC 2 on Sunday night from 1988 to 94 then Mark Coussins took over from 1997 to 2000. That's how I discovered this film on Moviedrome in 1993.
The book party stares and the teacher from the opening scene, illustrates its already too late to fight against the invasion. Scary and brilliant.
this movie's more apropos now than ever.
I was thinking the same thing throughout the video. The premise scared me as a child and the reality scares me, now.
Maybe thats why it genuinely creeps me out like few other movies.

I would also include The Puppet Masters (1994) as an attempted remake of sorts. Yes, I know its an adaption Robert Heinlein's 1951 novel, but with Donald Sutherland starring, it has more of a feel of "Snatchers" rather than the "Puppet Masters" novel, which ended up being a very loose adaption at best.
I agree; if you are going to mention The Faculty, then The Puppet Masters should be included.
What happens when scientology gets hold of someone you love or know really well. They literally turn into a different person altogether. So we have a running joke around here that it's as creepy as the movie "invasion of the body snatchers".
I find it interesting that keeping it non political was a major concern for them. That says a lot actually.
Is THAT just scientology specifically or religion in general?

Still my favorite horror movie. The fact that it scares the crap out of you without any jump scares is amazing and I just love the paranoia. Absolute masterpiece.
I recorded this on VHS as it was on late at night in the 90s. Unbelievably, the tape ran out a few seconds too early and I was left not knowing if Sutherland's character had changed or not for years.
Poor Veronica Cartwright, they didn't tell her what would happen at the Alien breakfast scene either. This movie is amazing, yet for some reason hardly gets mentioned amongst the great horror classics.

This movie is so scary that I watch it only once every five years. It just creeps me out and is so depressing. The themes and special effects beat the hell out of anything from today. Also, I have to say that I have always felt like first three were something of a trilogy set in the same relative universe covering the invasion from separate view points. You have small town, big town, and the military, these define a great deal of life in America.
Ending films without music is so effective. I always think of Planet of the Apes, where all you hear is the ocean, while credits roll…

My 2nd favorite horror movie, the best horror remake, and the most atmospheric horror movie.
Astonishing film.
I was walking through town this week and I felt like Elizabeth does in the early part of the film. It's the masks, people peering at me over the top of them, expressionless and unreadable. An odd feeling in the air of unease and uncertainty. I thought about how I miss seeing people's faces; such a simple thing. I felt like I was on another planet. I thought of this film, that I haven't seen in a long time, and then this video popped up as a suggestion a few days later (I wasn't a subscriber). Spooky!
I still remember watching this at the theater when it was released. I had seen and loved the original version on TV, but this was fresh (for its time), well-written, directed, scored, and acted. The dog/banjo player freaked me out, I recall, as did the ending, and the love story was heartbreaking. It seems, to me at least, more of a 'reimagining' than a remake, and it holds up quite well - even after all these years.

The end of this film is literally the scariest ending I have ever seen. Love it!
The most unsettling thing in this movie, other than the human dog hybrid, is how skinny and lanky Jeff Goldblum is when he takes his shirt off.

A well-made remake. The dog with the human face, and the ending still freak me out.
I was lucky to see the original one first, because it just made me more anxious to watch this one after I had picked it up from a box of DVDs that were being donated from a friend of my mom. I loved the original, but this one was terrifying. Those synthesized pulses when Matt is walking around helplessly, while his phone calls are scoffed at, really leaves you feeling disturbed. Great video Oliver! I have been looking forward to it for some time.
The dog scene really freaks me out... still to this day
I saw this when it premiered on network broadcast television. Back when cable was only in big cities and home VCR's were extremely expensive.
Love it then and each of the dozen or so times I've seen it since.
Now, to listen to what you have to say as I nod and smile.
I loved the 93 Body Snatchers by Abel Ferrara. Forest Whittaker and Meg Tilly were amazing in that movie. But I loved all versions - even the Nicole Kidman movie has its moments too.
One of the best remakes ever...regardless of genre. Classic sci-fi/horror. Solid acting, direction & story. The FX were well done.Creepy, moody, especially the ending. perfect music for this film. It has held up very well over the decades. Yes San Francisco still is & will always be a liberal thinking city. I was born, raised & still live in “The City”....when I was 8 some of home scenes @ “ The Painted Ladies “ we’re film across the street from the school I attended ( French American Bilingual School). In fact, the children in the park during the opening scene were schoolmates of mine. The two other remakes are watchable. Even though humanity would fade away is it so bad what the pod people offered. No hate , sadness, despair 😩 etc. what do you think???

I just found it by accident on my parents DVD shelf and put it out to watch it. So I have had the same synchronicity this week also. *creepy*

Out of all 4 adaptations of this story, I really feel 1978 is the best take on the story.
Definitely the best version by a wide margin.
Easily one of the best endings in horror history
A remake done right by upping the creepiness of the original & capitalizing on the changes between the ‘50s and ‘70s. The Cold War themes are there, but you can feel a domestic fear in there too especially that downer ending when we see Matthew has become assimilated

Much to admire in this movie but Leonard Nimoy is the best! I was absolutely convinced that his character had arrived on earth after being borne on the solar winds!

Brooke Adams was a real breakout star at the time. She did a few 70s flicks. I thought she was an alright actress. I saw both remakes and the 70s version is still the best one.
Seeing a new Oliver Harper Retrospective is like getting an early Christmas gift.
It seems like director's really like to get natural reactions from Veronica Cartwright at the time.
This movie is definitely one of the better remakes of a film than most. I love the original 1956 version and of course this version too.
One of my favorite sci fi movies, one of my favorite remakes. I always liked SF as a background city in many movies, it works perfectly in this film, It was its own character. What a great city, it once was.
