- Calgary, Alberta, CANADA - 1988 Winter Games, Ladies' Short Program - Re-posting another one of the videos the IOC had filed copyright infringement and had me taking it down. Now, the IOC only wants to monetize on these clips.
Katarina Witt of the German Democratic Republic placed 2nd in the portion of the competition. With her 3rd place finish in Compulsory Figures, she would be in 2nd Place going into the Long Program. And what's an Olympic figure skating competition without controversy? The controversy here was how short and skimpy the "skirt" part of Katarina's outfit was, especially in the front.

I don't care what anyone says. This costumer was fabulous, and the performance was insane.
There's no comparison for me..Katarina's beauty and demeanor, skating ability and charm wins over Thomas all day..Thomas looks like she's headed into a boxing match or to get a root canal
@@keithfloydjr4014 I disagree. I think Debi Thomas was also a phenomenal skater with great musical interpretation, as were the other top 5 finishers at this Olympics.
@@stevebbuk9557 What was wrong with Debbie's unitard ? It was perfect for the more modern, club music of her SP. Debbie's SP was technically more difficult than Kat's, and she had better body lines. IMO, Debbie should've placed first in the SP, because the emphasis in the SP was supposed to be the technical aspect.
@@3l3llala13 No the emphasis on the short programme is first and foremost not to make a mistake. Required elements and presentation are equal. The modern music you call it (I call it a trifle trashy) jarred with myself and the judges, so it seemed. I would aver had she maintained that pace with a flawless technical programme in the LP she would have snatched the gold, even with the leggings, which fortunately she had dispensed with by that time.

Witt and Oksana Baiul the only two skaters who can pull off this Broadway showgirl dancing routine on ice. Check out Oksana's 94 Olympic LP, also impressive and very similar. Broadway music is timeless!

K. Witt had matured very nicely since the 1984 Olympics... as a skater, and as a woman.
Practicalli she dances like being on a solid surface not ice. Two fantastic legs permitted her to do famtastic things .

I remember there was a bruhaha about her skating dresses for these Olympics. Some thought they were too low cut and/or suggestive, but I don't see what the big deal was, even after all these years.

@@SR-sp4bj Не к сожалению: Витт- образец ЖЕНСКОГО катания, а не подросткового, прекрасная фигуристка, а не "детский прыгающий страус", которому далеко до настоящего женского катания.И сейчас нет женского катания, есть подростковое- и все чемпионки- однодневки ни одна не удержала золото.

Amazimg program. One of my favorite programs of all time.
First, thanks for re-posting this; your video of this performance is a much finer quality than many others'. After viewing this, I went back and watched her skate at the 1987 NHK when she wore a presumably more scandalous version of the costume. At NHK there were fewer feathers on her hips and the ones in the rear appeared to be shorter. Unless she skated an earlier version that had no feathers at all, I presume this is the outfit that provoked judges' comments of her skating in a "g-string."
Anyway, with almost 30 years' perspective, her Olympic skate was not the most difficult of the evening and perhaps did not contain the artistic heft of some of the others, Katarina accomplished what she did so many times in her career; delivered the performance she needed when she needed it most.
A wonderful program
And yet, she got the gold!!!!!! Go Katrina!

If I could ever have just one wish as to who I would want to meet, it would be Katarina Witt hands down. !st of all she was/is BEAUTIFUL!!! 2nd, I would bet she is a very sweet and kind person. I can just tell. Classy Women to say the least.
Dick Button summarized Kat's skating style perfectly while her marks were being shown:
"While she has enormous charms, enormous jumping ability and a great competitiveness, the style and her positions really are not that first rate."

Some of her international victories came with her winning the SP and nothing else.

Entertaining short program. I still think much more should have been said about the level of attractiveness between The Two Brians. Athletic attractiveness is crucial in every sport. 😂

An underrated short programme.
All her performances in 1988 (the short and the long) are under-rated.
Two of the great performances of all time, esp. so the long, "Carmen".
John G. Lewis - The Carmen program was fairly rated. While it was strong artistically (over the top for my taste), it was not so strong technically. She spent a lot of time barely moving, standing around posing, simply trying to seduce the judges.

@@MrOu83 disagree. In the opening minute she had 4 jumping passes done to very fast music and timed precisely to the music. Had she been a split second out on her timing the whole lot would have been a mess, especially the part from the second 3T, immediately into 2A, straight into combination spin then step sequence into layback - all right on the music with no room for breath/error. Surely this is technically challenging? I don’t blame her for having a bit of a breather after all that 😆
I personally think katarina was generally better in Short programs than long programs , this one was one of my favourite of hers , but still think Debi should've won that portion of the competition .

@@reynaldoflores4522 Ans that was the controversy at the time. There was debate as to whether she had an appropriate skirt to her costume. I believe the ISU made some rule changes for acceptable costumes after this.
