Hello everyone - so here's the thing. This was the first ever sound like video we shot, and in fairness, the biggest fail for us was listening to someone else's choices on pedals. We should have stuck to our guns, but alas, we didn't at the time. You'll all be happy to know we will be redoing this in due course, but until then, you'll have to make do with this!
+An Insider's Tip He is known to use several Boss pedals. He used to use the Boss Ds-2 and DS-1 quit a bit. He actually had three in his rig at one point. They could have gotten the price ALOT cheaper by getting a multi-fx unit like the HD500 or one of the Boss GT series. Getting the AC30/AC15 caused the price to go up too.
+Jonjey Comms Yeai know what you mean but all these videos give you a solid quality setup ready to take to the studio and on the road. Im from the UK and i do understand that the exchange rate isnt great for you guys but to be honest all music shops are very expensive in England, and there arent too many around anymore especially of that size, if you went online everything would be much cheaper. Peace and Love though Dude!
+Jonjey Comms just buy a squier classic vibe 50's o 60's,a marshall combo, boss ds-2 and ibanez wh10 i think that you can obtain a super cool frusciante's tone with less than 1000 dollars
***** I'm a massive fan of all the Andertons videos and you in particular Rabea but the title of these video's is "sound like without busting the bank" so surely picking 1 pedal instead of 2, especially when it's the actual pedal John uses, would be more cost effective?
Well I guess it's because we were trying to pinpoint certain tones from songs, and trying to achieve that with different bits of gear, that take care of that one tone. Obviously we are trying to get a full gigging rig on a budget of around £1500 and this rig was quite versatile for that RHCP sound. But of course it's not bang on because I'm not John! ;-)
Nice video! I am a huge fanboy so would have chosen: Same guitar, squier classic vibe 50's in sunburst Marshall DSl40C, with these settings: Bass:10/Mid: 6/Treble 4-6 Boss DS-2 EHX Holy Grail Nano Ibanez WH10v2 EHX (Nano) Big Muff

He also uses an Ibanez Wah Pedal. You can get the copy of the orginial WH10 for the same money as you spend for a Dunlop pedal. He also used Line6 Pedals. No Vox, no Dunlop haha :)
In fact, you need a strat, a boss ds-1, ibanez wh 10 and a holy grail. thats the fundament you need to sound like him. but thats maybe 10%. for the rest, you have to be john, he is pretty unique.
@@KeeperOfPoops I'm sorry but it really isn't, they admitted it themselves, Dave Simpson did something similar, his rig was around the same price but came out miles better I suggest you check him doing johns tone with minimum gear if you have the time
+monksax First you need to work in a band with a terrible singer who is obsessed with heroin and loves only himself. second, you need a nice big house, a smack habbit so bad it should have killed you several times, and of course, a lighter to set house on fire. leave said band and watch your replacement fuck up a band you love and poured all your efforts into for the last few years. After that, you're closer to being John Frusciante. By the way, I do love RHCP, even Anthony, this is just my interpretation of what happened.
+David Haley idk man Klinghoffer is an excellent musician. See especially his work on John's solo albums as well as Josh's own solo project Dot Hacker. Not to mention that new RHCP single that's their best in a decade. I think Josh is really starting to sound at home in the band
+banjonator1 Yes he's a excellent musician, this is in no way a dis to Josh. But.. I personally do not like RHCP's music since JF left. Last album had no really memorable guitar hooks or solos.
That's wayyyy too much you only need a Fender Strat, Any Practice with low gain, Boss Ds2, Ibanez wh10 or a Vox wah, Delay, chorus pedal, Reverb= John.
It's because the solo is overdubbed. There's a written interview where he talks about it. Trying to get a black sabbath big guitar sound by overdubbing the main solo.

Karl-Henrik Arendt sorry i meant fender showman...For what I remember he used that a Marshall Major and a Jubilee. For pedals he used a boss DS-1, CE-1,and DS-2. M MXR phase 90 a Wha and a Big Muff
Why not do it cheaper with a Marshall DSL combo, EH Big Muff, a Boss DS2, normal wah, and have enough for a compressor? Very versatile rig for someone starting out with a CV Strat, and should get those tones for quite a few songs out of the catalogue!
+Jamie Clark My thoughts exactly... a DSL15 for home or a DSL40 for live, Big Muff, DS2, Ibanez WH10v2 wah and pretty much whatever compressor you feel like would be a better combination IMO.
Pretty much any amp that doesn't get too distorted will do the John Marshall amps are more for gigs. I'd recommend a Stagg 10 watt amp the 10 ga amp that does the John Sound very close. My Ds-2 works amazing through it for a 10 watt.
"Was with them up until the last album" this video was shot in 2015, so that statement is not true, the last album made with Frusciante was Stadium Arcadium, which was recorded in 2007 if im not mistaken. Record Im With You, recorded in 2011 was done already with Josh Klighoffer.
sorry but no. only one so far that i find doesn't sound close. the clean bits on scar tissue were fine, but thats a sound thats easy to nail with essentially any "clean" amp. the distorted bits sounded too far off, and the dani california end solo sounded pretty horrible. shouldn't have tried to be clever. replace the pedals with a muff, ds1, and some chorus pedal, and ditch that vox. personally, i think you would have been much closer if you went for a Fender Supersonic (two great clean channels plus heaps of overdrive that can sound like a muff pedal if you know what you're doing). or to save a buck, get a small marshall combo. maybe even a dsl
John used Fender amps, live and in studio, the Jubilee was used as a crunch channel. He had a fender Princeton behind the rig and that is the sound of his cleans. In studio he used twin reverb and the Princeton, and of course Marshall silver jubilee for the crunch channel. The most affordable way of getting his sound is as they said, a fender Squier classic vibe and a Marshall dsl15 and or 40c.
I would like to give everyone some tips about achieving Frusciante's tone: - Strat (Any 60' reissue like the classic series with a rosewood freatboard and sunburst finish should be fine, or just a regular mexican strandard) - A good regulation of pickups. To reach his tone the first thing you can do is lower the neck pickup to get that great nasal and full of bass frequencies tone. - The amp should be a Marshall. He likes to use really a lot of gain (you can also reach it with the MXR Micro Amp that he uses a lot) with a lot of bass fq. Middles and trebles should be fine at 12 O'clock. - Pedals: MUST HAVE: Boss DS-2 distortion (pretty cheap); EHX Big Muff (Reissue goes well, pretty cheap); Ibanez WH-10 v2(Foundamental pedal to get his tone); Boss CE-5 (not what he uses, but it's a really good cheap alternative) With all those things you should spend less than 1500 € (note: not Pounds, but Euros!) If you want something more you can get: - Seymour Duncan SSL-1 - Line6 DL 4 Delay - MXR Phase 90 - Wh-10 V1 (rare) - Crazy expensive Moog stuff that he uses a lot - Chorus CE-1 RARE I just tried to help, rock on everyone!
I have a Fender Squier Strat Sunburst Affinity Series 2003 model Rosewood neck with Stock Squier pickups. You can't always copy what he has it's about getting your own John Frusciante Sound. I'd recommend a Fender Strat Squier, a 10 watt practice amp with low gain, a Boss DS-2 need, Ibanez WH10 V1 or V2 or V3 or even a Vox wah, a Delay pedal digital not analog and a Reverb Pedal. Vintage Guitars are really expensive so I'd recommend a Squier Strat.

I play guitar in a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band, my gear: Fender Classic Player '50 Stratocaster Fender Telecaster (made in Japan) Marshall Jcm800 Amp. Dunlop MXR compressor ( i also use it to boost) Boss DS2 Turbodistortion (perfect for soloing/strong powerchord) Boss Chorus Ch1 Boss DD3 Delay Dunlop CM95 Wah I think i busted my bank :-) Cheers from Italy
John is one of those players where a lot of his tone comes from his fingers, every guitarist says they have that but he's the only one I've really heard to have it
Liked this one too: - VOX for a very good clean basic tone (esp. on a budget) - Treble booster (a bit of Rory (;-) - the SL drive is great - the combination of the SL + the Satisfaction was a surprise to me ... cool tone Well done. Thanks!
there should be an entire channel dedicated to these videos and they should all be an hour long with multiple attempts/more songs!! valiant effort on this one
Please redo this video. Just get the the boss ds2 and for wah the ibanez wh10. Also use the marshal dsl 40c for the amp. The guitar was good just change the amp and pedals.
that vox sounded pretty perfect for that kind of sound. though you were missing a chorus effect of some sort, It's a must for a lot of the BSSM stuff. This rig is great for the Californiacation/Stadium Arcadium era sound though
Strat - Boss DS2 (as overdrive) - Big Muff - Ibanez WH102 - Phase 90. And maybe a MXR Micro amp and some chorus pedal or a Deluxe Electric Mistress but you don't need more to cover most of the songs and it isn't soooo expensive.
+Chris Fruscio analog and digital delay...john has always used boss dd series and mxr/eventide delays and mild reverb on the amp but also ehx holy grail and a compressor.. Boss DS-2, Ibanez WH-10, EHX English Muff'n/Big Muff, MXR Dynacomp, Micro Amp, Phase 90, Boss CE-2/5, MXR Analog Delay/Ibanez DE-7, Boss DD-3 Delay and a Line Selector....those are the pedals ranging from Mothers Milk to Stadium Arcadium...im not getting into the insane amount of Moog pedals or Line6 because the pedals I just listed have been his main ones...also Marshall Majors, Silver Jubilees, JCM800s 50w, Fender Deluxe Reverb/Princeton Reverb/Bassmans, Vox AC4s-30s, Soldano, Crate, Supro, Mesa Boogie, Budda and Magnatones - studio and live...Strats, Teles, Esquires, Goldtop p90 Les Pauls, Les Paul Customs, Gibson SGs, Grestch White Falcon, Yamaha s2000s and Martin/Gibson/Epiphone and Taylor acoustics also he has used/uses Epiphone Wilshire/Wildkat/Casinos and Gibson ES-335s...Fulltone OCD and Ibanez Tube Screamers for overdrives when he used them...he has used Vox Wahs as well.
It's not 100% accurate but I'm a huge Frusciante fan so I'm gonna be picky haha His clean tone has a small amount of gain depending what pickup he was using, Neck sounded pretty clean and the bridge had a driven bite like the tone of the 'Can't Stop' riff. Guys, you could have also just used a Boss DS2 to be in Frusciante solo heaven! He used an Ibanez WH10 through his whole career for a wah but the reissue sucks compared to the sound of the old one. You'd have to mod it. But great effort though, it doesn't sound miles off especially when it's like a £1,500 price range!
On one hand, I love these videos, because they show how you can be resourceful with less expensive gear, and still get good sound. However, I think I preferred when Chappers and Lee did this because they are MUCH more analytical about the sounds they are trying to achieve. Having said that, though, I still enjoy these videos. Keep doing them.
no hate intended, i love the series but in my opinion even for a budget Frusciante sound its not even close :( But keep up the good work, really enjoyed the series
Boss Ds-2 - the 'turbo' setting gives you the fuzzy solo sound. Big muff for songs like Fortune Faded. Any chorus can do, as CE-1s are rare. Use an Ibanez WH10. If you're gonna spend more, line 6 delay and modulation modules, not to mention the moogs...
You guys don't sound like John at all lol. Just get a boss ds-2, ehx big muff and a squier CV60 instead of CV50 into marshall dsl5c or something marshallque.
where can i find the video of Lee modding his classic vibe? Great videos, just discovered them and i'm addicted. Got to see the Darkness do a small gig last year and they're still awesome!
Take It Easy - I'm Easily Offended except when when he's using a Vox. Google it - you can find a number of images of him using AC-30's, particularly live. That's not to say he doesn't use marshals - but it's clearly not "only marshal". He also has a number of fender amps he uses too.
Well, now I want to get the SL boost! Cool video. I especially liked how close you guys got to the "fortune faded" tone, especially since JF doesn't use a Strat on that song.
Ok if that's true how does he get his compressed sound? Does he use compression from the mixing board? Does he crank the clean channel on his Marshall? The clean guitar tones on the Chillie Pepper albums are really heavily compressed? How does he do it?
+Jeffrey Haefner he basically uses the Silver Jubilee "pull" function to get that particular tone. But i swear, he never used anything to compress his sound. Btw he also likes to set his pickups very low.
That's great info thank you for that. But for the rest of us who cannot afford a Silver Jubilee full stack Marshall and a vintage Fender Strat how are we supposed to get his sound with out a compressor? That's my question. Since the title of this video is in fact "Sound like without breaking the bank?"
Squier Classic Vibe 60's Stratocaster -$399 Marshall DSL 20CR $600 or DSL5CR $500 if you don't plan to do any gigging with it Boss DS2 - $90 or DS1 - $50 if you're on a tight budget Boss Chorus - $110 or an EHX Small Clone - $80 can do the trick if you're on a budget too EHX Big Muff - $80 Ibanez WH10 - $100 You're welcome
the point of this video is to do it on a budget. the Vox is a class A English style amp with a Greenback speaker. the people who think that in order to sound like someone else, you have to buy the same brand pedal are missing the point.
he does in the studio ...ac-15s and 30s, magnatones, a supro, fender deluxe reverbs, princetons, soldano, budda, crate v22, v5s modded, vhts and marshalls
For an overall close sound for each of his sounds (Clean (Marshall Major 200), Crunch (Silver Jubliee), and Distortion (pedals like the Boss DS-2, Big Muff, Ibanez WH10), I get a closer sound with my Blackstar and those exact pedals. Something for clean boost can help negate the fact you only have a tone knob on the HT40 clean channel and get you a nice full bodied warm but sparkly John sound, as he actually has the Bass and Mids higher than the Treble (Particularly on the Major), which is why I think Vox was a bad choice. For his clean Strat sound? Sure! But if you're trying to get a gigging rig for cheap, definitely not a Vox for Frusciante. It needs to be a bit more versatile. Good call on the 50's vibe though. I use a Classic 50s series and it does the job. Always wondered if switching to the Seymour Duncan pups that ones he uses would help.
Fair play man, it is difficult trying to replicate someone's tone, especially only having recordings to listen to. If I were in the room with him playing it'd be tons easier, but alas, I'm not! Still lots of fun to do though :-)
Try Boss DS-1 + Big Muff + Ibanez WH-10 Wah! There's no secret! I really appreciate your job e I'm huge fan this channel Please, don't take it as hostile critic.
Hi Matt and Rabea Could you please make a Sound Like Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme? We know Rabea is influenced by them and it would be awesome to hear you play some Extreme riffs.
.For what I remember he used a Marshall Major and a Jubilee and a Fender Showman. For pedals he used a boss DS-1, CE-1,and DS-2. M MXR phase 90 a Wha and a Big Muff
this isnt even close....you know you could just grab the actual pedal he uses....its not like they are rare/expensive. o yeah and learn his style too before even thinking about trying to copy his gear.

Dean Prater this needs to be done
And now they did :D
Some of the pedals that he uses are cheaper than the ones they picked
what was hard about just using a boss ds2 and an ibanez wah into a clean marshall...
actually, the Marshals were set a little dirty. You may notice it very clearly on His cover of How Deep is Your Love.
Lalchhan Bawitlung ''clean marshall'' being the clean channel on a marshall not necessarily a clean sound
No it's the ce-1
gogajira2 yeah what he would do a lot of the time is use the overdrive channel with the gain really really low. Just to add a little bit of bite.

John Frusciante used an Electro Harmonix Big Muff so why not use that? The screaming bird and the satisfaction fuzz are just pointless
Gary Moseley well, as i said when all 3 are on, that's the sound it creates. The challenge is more aimed at picking random gear we 'think' would work

I would too but it's kinda hard to replicate a 1981 Silverburst custom into a Super Bass/Diezel VH4 Blueface
Make it happen!
+Headrush Not anymore.
This is so disappointing as a RHCP fan, they seemed to just not put much into their gear decisions and did NOT nail the tone.
+Zaq Kickasola (Da Shurif) I agree he always uses rosewood. It gave his rhythm and lead parts a more mellow bassy tone.
You can nail the Californication album with maple, everything else is hit or miss. Dani California is undoubtedly his '62 rosewood board burst
+Zaq Kickasola (Da Shurif) Most if not all of Stadium Arcadium was recorded with the rosewood. But I wonder of he used the white falcon for Californication?
To be fair though, there is absolutely no way to get the tone of a genuine 60's Strat on a budget.
***** the way John set his amps, you can. At least more than most people. But I agree, the whole rig is fucked
John uses Marshall's, he's also a big fan of BOSS pedals. You've got no Marshall, and no Boss pedals, lol.

shouldn't have tried to be clever. replace the pedals with a muff, ds1, and some chorus pedal, and ditch that vox. personally, i think you would have been much closer if you went for a Fender Supersonic (two great clean channels plus heaps of overdrive that can sound like a muff pedal if you know what you're doing). or to save a buck, get a small marshall combo. maybe even a dsl
shut up! the distorted bits sounded way on and the dani california end solo sounded pretty wonderful
Nah...you guys didn't nail that tone.
yes they did, they nailed it 100%
William Allison no... they didnt
I would like to give everyone some tips about achieving Frusciante's tone:
- Strat (Any 60' reissue like the classic series with a rosewood freatboard and sunburst finish should be fine, or just a regular mexican strandard)
- A good regulation of pickups.
- Pedals:
MUST HAVE: Boss DS-2 distortion (pretty cheap); EHX Big Muff (Reissue goes well, pretty cheap); Ibanez WH-10 v2(Foundamental pedal to get his tone); Boss CE-5 (not what he uses, but it's a really good cheap alternative)
With all those things you should spend less than 1500 € (note: not Pounds, but Euros!)
If you want something more you can get:
- Seymour Duncan SSL-1
- Line6 DL 4 Delay
- MXR Phase 90
- Wh-10 V1 (rare)
- Crazy expensive Moog stuff that he uses a lot
- Chorus CE-1 RARE
I just tried to help, rock on everyone!
You missed the Boss DS2 Turbo Distortion pedal
Bass and Drums part
·Flea
-Musicman SUB Stingray for oldy Flea
-Sire V7 adler and rosewood if you wanna emulate that 61 jazz bass Flea's got. Passive mode
-Gallien Krueger MB 110. Bass at 5, Mids at 3, Treble at 66'
-Big Muff, dry channel, all tone and minimal sustain. This shlould be every time for the most powerfull songs
-Boss ODB3 Bass Overdrive for some songs
·Chad Smith
-Chad's sound is warm and envelope. The secret is on the contrast between Sabian cymbals and a very specific tunning, big toms and a not so big snare made of steel. DDrum Journeyman Rambler is the best option, you'll have two floor toms and a single rack one.
-The snare should be a Pearl Sensitone Steel 14x5, almost the same Chad uses
-Sabian cymbals. AAX series work good. A china is esential
"He uses the big muff so lets get the satisfaction fuzz" what the hell is wrong wit these guys
I play guitar in a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band, my gear:
Fender Classic Player '50 Stratocaster
Fender Telecaster (made in Japan)
Marshall Jcm800 Amp.
Dunlop MXR compressor ( i also use it to boost)
Boss DS2 Turbodistortion (perfect for soloing/strong powerchord)
Boss Chorus Ch1
Boss DD3 Delay
Dunlop CM95 Wah
I think i busted my bank :-)
Cheers from Italy
a tribute band? lmao
What's wrong with that?
John is one of those players where a lot of his tone comes from his fingers, every guitarist says they have that but he's the only one I've really heard to have it
Liked this one too:
- VOX for a very good clean basic tone (esp. on a budget)
- Treble booster (a bit of Rory (;-)
- the SL drive is great
- the combination of the SL + the Satisfaction was a surprise to me ... cool tone
Well done. Thanks!
You forgot to mention John first appeared in MOTHERS MILK
We are still waiting for this redo. Which squier strat should i go for. Affinity? Vibe? Vintage? Custom?
Can you guys do a 'sound like John Frusciante BY busting the bank'? It would be pretty fun! Thank you :)
I dont get why they didnt just get a squier CV strat, shove it through a Boss DS2, and then into a nice marshall amp.
Nobody can play like John Frusciante
there should be an entire channel dedicated to these videos and they should all be an hour long with multiple attempts/more songs!! valiant effort on this one
Please redo this video. Just get the the boss ds2 and for wah the ibanez wh10. Also use the marshal dsl 40c for the amp. The guitar was good just change the amp and pedals.
guitar should have been rosewood
nah, john has a maple one too
True, but he primarily used it on songs like the zephyr song. His main strats have always had rosewood boards
Thank you, finally someone said it. Jf used a jaguar in fortune faded
***** Gibson SG Custom, actually
Good call on the Vox, those clean roomy Marshall tones don't come cheap. Would have liked to see a compressor though!
Tom Morello, that would be sick
César Ventura get a fucktone of effects. Chain them in series, play one note, and rape the whammy pedal. There. You got Morello...
César Ventura Tom Morello only uses like 4 pedals so it'd be pretty easy to nail..Flanger, Delay, Whammy and Wah
dzemohendrix someone here has no idea..
And MXR phase 90 of course
that vox sounded pretty perfect for that kind of sound. though you were missing a chorus effect of some sort, It's a must for a lot of the BSSM stuff. This rig is great for the Californiacation/Stadium Arcadium era sound though
No Chorus pedal? what?
exactly what i was asking myself
Love the vid and the tone, always just love that fender clean vibe and sounds great through the vox.
do sound like the mars volta/omar rodriguez-lopez
Strat - Boss DS2 (as overdrive) - Big Muff - Ibanez WH102 - Phase 90.
And maybe a MXR Micro amp and some chorus pedal or a Deluxe Electric Mistress but you don't need more to cover most of the songs and it isn't soooo expensive.
Should've gone Std crybaby, DSL 40C, boss ds1, and a fuzz face. The squier was a good choice, but I really don't know about the rest.
I think a big muff and wh10 instead. Might even add a MXR mirco amp to that
+Chris Fruscio analog and digital delay...john has always used boss dd series and mxr/eventide delays and mild reverb on the amp but also ehx holy grail and a compressor..
Frusciante uses boss overdrive for a start and for your clean boost/ treble boost it’s no secret that Frusciante uses an mxr micro amp
It's not 100% accurate but I'm a huge Frusciante fan so I'm gonna be picky haha
His clean tone has a small amount of gain depending what pickup he was using, Neck sounded pretty clean and the bridge had a driven bite like the tone of the 'Can't Stop' riff.
Cheers man, much appreciated feedback
On one hand, I love these videos, because they show how you can be resourceful with less expensive gear, and still get good sound.
However, I think I preferred when Chappers and Lee did this because they are MUCH more analytical about the sounds they are trying to achieve.
Having said that, though, I still enjoy these videos. Keep doing them.
no hate intended, i love the series but in my opinion even for a budget Frusciante sound its not even close :( But keep up the good work, really enjoyed the series
are you deaf? it's REALLY close
Wait, Im pretty sure Scar Tissue has 3 solos not 2 cz i remember doing awsome improv 3 times :p
Awesome*
Lol the solos sound like bridges on "Scar Tissue"...still amazing af tho
The moment that Rabea started playing the Scar Tissue intro, I was amazed at how it literally sounded just like it.
I kind of miss a chorus. Frusciante uses that a LOT!
Loving these vids guys! Only problem is I can already hear my bank account weeping. Keep up the good work!
You guys don't sound like John at all lol. Just get a boss ds-2, ehx big muff and a squier CV60 instead of CV50 into marshall dsl5c or something marshallque.
didn't he just use a DS-1? not sure.
No, he use a DS-2.
he used both ;)
Alex Al Zouri true XD, i looked it up, but he used the ds-2 more tho.
+Rick van Baal yup he switched up in the 2000 hehe. John ´ s tone will be always a big muff, ds 2 or 1 , wh 10 and a fucking stack of marshalls
Was the wah third in the signal chain?
I thought it got the essence of his sound pretty well.
Well played!!
Please do a sound like buckethead
feedback, feedback to no end
+Marco Bongioanni and wah
+Marco Bongioanni and wah
+Marco Bongioanni and wah
+Johannes Kristiansen and wah
The amount of reverb in that room at the start always makes me think i've forgotten to plug in my headphones
Sound like Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher.
where can i find the video of Lee modding his classic vibe? Great videos, just discovered them and i'm addicted. Got to see the Darkness do a small gig last year and they're still awesome!
Wtf Vox? He only uses Marshall. Should've gone with the trusty DSL 40c
Take It Easy - I'm Easily Offended except when when he's using a Vox. Google it - you can find a number of images of him using AC-30's, particularly live. That's not to say he doesn't use marshals - but it's clearly not "only marshal". He also has a number of fender amps he uses too.
If the bank allows you to snag a BOSS DS-2 turbo-distortion then definitely grab one! Amaazing Frusciante solo tone/fuzz
this vídeo is: How not sound like JF
This series of videos are great!
Can you post a link of the video where Lee modifies that Strat please?
Adam Jones or Justin Chancellor from Tool!!
Well, now I want to get the SL boost! Cool video. I especially liked how close you guys got to the "fortune faded" tone, especially since JF doesn't use a Strat on that song.
Sound like John Frusciante without a compressor pedal? Sacrilege.
+Jeffrey Haefner Actually he doesn't use any compression pedal, and never did.
Ok if that's true how does he get his compressed sound? Does he use compression from the mixing board? Does he crank the clean channel on his Marshall? The clean guitar tones on the Chillie Pepper albums are really heavily compressed? How does he do it?
+Jeffrey Haefner he compresses the shit out of his recordings
+Jeffrey Haefner he basically uses the Silver Jubilee "pull" function to get that particular tone. But i swear, he never used anything to compress his sound. Btw he also likes to set his pickups very low.
That's great info thank you for that. But for the rest of us who cannot afford a Silver Jubilee full stack Marshall and a vintage Fender Strat how are we supposed to get his sound with out a compressor? That's my question. Since the title of this video is in fact "Sound like without breaking the bank?"
Squier Classic Vibe 60's Stratocaster -$399
Marshall DSL 20CR $600 or DSL5CR $500 if you don't plan to do any gigging with it
Boss DS2 - $90 or DS1 - $50 if you're on a tight budget
Boss Chorus - $110 or an EHX Small Clone - $80 can do the trick if you're on a budget too
EHX Big Muff - $80
Ibanez WH10 - $100
You're welcome
john dont use Vox, he use marshall amp and this tone is so weird with these pedals.
the point of this video is to do it on a budget. the Vox is a class A English style amp with a Greenback speaker.
the people who think that in order to sound like someone else, you have to buy the same brand pedal are missing the point.
whatever it is,
not look like his tone
I once played a Fender with a Vox amp in a music store, and it was really similar to John's tone.
boss ds2 is a super cheap distortion pedal
he does in the studio
...ac-15s and 30s, magnatones, a supro, fender deluxe reverbs, princetons, soldano, budda, crate v22, v5s modded, vhts and marshalls
7:24 - 7:51 is just a beautiful guitar solo
The dude with the afro looks like Jonah Hill in Superbad
oh u just made me laugh so hard haha
"No one's McLovin! McLovin is just a stupid dumb fucking fairy tale name you FAAACK!"
~Jonah Hill (2008)~
Patrick Interiano Muhammad is like the most common name in the world
For an overall close sound for each of his sounds (Clean (Marshall Major 200), Crunch (Silver Jubliee), and Distortion (pedals like the Boss DS-2, Big Muff, Ibanez WH10), I get a closer sound with my Blackstar and those exact pedals.
SOUND LIKE JOHNNY MARR
Strat and an AC15, you can't go wrong! That's what I play!
+Andrew D. I looking forward to an Ac15. Can it break up at bedroom levels?
it can a little. if you leave the master volume down low and crank the channel volume (it's pretty much the gain knob)
Sorry guys. But it doesn't sound like John Frusciante at all! =/
Dude, if your going to criticise someone else, at least get it right your self! It's a DS-2!
+Zac Withers I'm sure dude. I just typed it wrong! Chill out!
are you dumb?! it sounds exactly like frusciante
Hi Matt and Rabea
Could you please make a Sound Like Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme?
We know Rabea is influenced by them and it would be awesome to hear you play some Extreme riffs.
He has been there since mothers milk not bssm
He plays strat with black neck to us guitarists that matters
Plus he uses ibanez wh10
Kick Bam if it mattered that much to you you'd know to call that neck rosewood!
Starting at 6:27 actually sounds like the guitar part in the Beatles song "In My Life."
If you want to sound like JF you should train a lot in the first place and not just play but FEEL
.For what I remember he used a Marshall Major and a Jubilee and a Fender Showman. For pedals he used a boss DS-1, CE-1,and DS-2. M MXR phase 90 a Wha and a Big Muff
sound like david gilmour!!!!
so much of his sound is playing-style. wonderful and informative efforts!
this isnt even close....you know you could just grab the actual pedal he uses....its not like they are rare/expensive. o yeah and learn his style too before even thinking about trying to copy his gear.
That's what I was thinking...... It just sounds wrong
yes it is, it's REALLY close
Nice vid guys, those Squiers sound great.
