This is helpful. I try not to overbebop gospel tunes. Because most time I play in the 1 key tonality like you mentioned early in video. I suppose one should approach gospel in terms of changes like one would a jazz standard/ tune
That was really wonderful. I really enjoyed hearing that. This was exactly how I've been wanting to play some gospel tunes, but I haven't pulled it off yet. I've been busy trying to connect chord changes in a seemless manner on the blues. Trying this by just playing chord changes. It just seems disjointed. Meaning that the melody is not flowing. I don't know if that Make's sense to you.
@JazzWebShed yes. I can make some great lines on one chord, but now trying to use leading tones or enclosures to connect in a melodic line. I'm learning slowly. It's taking a long time. Picking up the horn again late in life.
Great video, Q. Whar church do you attend? I'd love to visit there sometime when I'm in Texas. I've been working this week on improvisation for church on Vicki Yohe's "Fill This Place" and it is a very inspiring song yet pretty simple changes.
Could you do a video on gospel embellishments etc (slurs, grace notes etc) almost a “smooth” jazz type
Thank you ..
🔥 very helpful

Do you mind sharing any link to the song "I love you Lord” ?

Glad this was helpful. I understand completely. You have to approach your improvisation like you’re creating melodies over the sound of the changes.
