They were both witness to Eva's murder, and they both grew up alone in a hostile world. Dante may have had an easier time of it by repressing what happened, and living as an entirely different person, but not by much. I imagine they'd be the same, simply with a slight change in MOTIVATION. But, indeed, he knows now, especially after integrating much more of his humanity through V.
Well, considering that 19-year-old Vergil was motivating and helping Dante grow all the way, relented to land him damage, protected him from being trapped, and gave Dante the only two weapons he had collected along the way, while Dante cruelly landed him a fatal blow, I could hardly say beating his brother is what teen Vergil had ever wanted to do. Even the mind-controlled Nelo Angelo spared Dante twice before he basically self-destructed at the end. DMC5 Vergil is more like DmC Vergin. He has a different personality and seems to have forgotten what he had done for his brother in the past and what his real priority was.
First time I saw angelo, I just knew the guy was badass. And despite his demonic visage, his offer of going to the courtyard so we have enough room to fight made me respect him. And as the music began, I was fully expecting something mid evil, dark and full of opera, but then it exploded into the pulsing, frantic rythm, and I fell in love with the series.
Looking back, Nelo Angelo still gives three of the best fights in DMC history and in action games in general. I miss this guy, even though I don't want my favorite character to suffer in enslavement.

Vergil was captured by Mundus at the end of Devil May Cry 3, brainwashed into serving him and became Corrupted Vergil. This caused him have the Nelo Angelo form.
Dante killed him but his mortality was delayed for a while, and he used that interval to fight Mundus, who refused to let him die and transformed him into Nelo Angelo.

(From here on u need to look into the Visions of V manga series to know more), then Mundus forced onto that Nelo Angelo armour onto him, and basically spilt his soul into Nightmare, Griphon and Shadow (enemy description of those enemy knight npcs is also testament of that in dmc5, also shown in the Visions of V manga). So yea, recurring bosses in DMC1 were in fact, all parts of Vergil
It’s amazing how Dante has gained all these upgrades and has gotten a lot stronger. But Vergil pretty much stayed the same when he revived and was still able to combat Dante with the Yamato. Vergil loved his brother so much that he stayed in hell extremely tired and weak after fighting Dante. I’m pretty sure he knew what was waiting for him (Mundus) only reason why Vergil lost was because he was extremely tired. I’m pretty damn sure he wants his rematch as well.
He didn't exactly reject Dante's reach out of love, he cut him because he refused to remain in the human world, and he wasn't about to let Dante follow him into the Underworld. It was mostly about pursuing his own goal, but he was looking out for Dante a bit. I also doubt he couldn't beat Mundus due to his condition, he just couldn't take on Mundus. In order to take on a full power Mundus to the point where you can take him on more or less normally, you need to essentially be Sparda.
Nah vergil was clearly way too weak. Not just from being exhausted but literally not strong enough. It took dante having to tap into the power of the Sparda Sword to even be able to defeat mundus not even kill him. All dante did was seal him back away. So mundus is literally just stuck in hell waiting for his chance to return.
Even if he was Vergil all along, Nelo Angelo specificly is my favourite character in DMC. When he invited us to an open space to fight him, I respected him. And when he was standing on top of that roof and his theme started playing, I was so pumped. And that same feeling of respect and hype stayed every time I had to fight him. And the fights themselves were so awesome. And his design was of course "absolute"
I still remember this music playing for the first time as the camera rolls up and shows Nelo Angelo on the top of the tower with his sword raised...........It was so early on in the game, but man was that like a warning for, you (the player) are about to be in for a fight.............Little did we even know the full scope of the match/rivalry and the sh** show that would ensue between the franchise. Most crazy thing in the world.
IMO I'd say that's V's entire gameplay in a nutshell. The "Visions of V" prequel manga goes into how Griffon, Shadow, & Nightmare are *specifically* manifestations of Vergil's trauma from his time as Nelo Angelo -- embodied as discarded entities that V can accept a contract with. Forming these contracts is essentially Vergil confronting the horrors & "weaknesses" he deliberately tried to discard, and turning that into the literal power he needed to keep him alive throughout the game.
Hmm in total, Vergil defeated Dante in 1 as Nero Angelo and 3 part in first battle (also in 5 if we also count Urizen first fight and he won in their short fight after Dante vs Urizen battle in Mission 17)
When I was watching playthroughs of the DMC games, I saw Neil Angelo in the first game and thought “Oh, so he’s the Vergil of this game.” Oh how right I was!!!
Holy hell, that choir intro is beyond compare! The level of epic that Super Ultra Violet has (Especially when it played in the Boss Battle itself) is still unmatched by other instrumental Vergil themes.
Imagine something like this mix plays in a DMC6, but Dante was forced to be the slave, and Vergil is forced to kill Dante in the end, and shedding a single tear, he leaves Yamato behind, loosely quoting Dante in DMC1 "Now father is here too, rest peacefully...brother" and for the first time, Vergil has an overwhelmingly sad and pissed off voice, and Vergil finally ends the threat of Mundus forever, and again loosely quotes Dante in DMC1 "If you ever return, give my regards to Nero...MY SON"

Kind of wish the game let you import custom songs and assign them to characters. Yes sure, you could just turn off the music volume, alt+tab out of the game every time a fight starts, start the song, go back and forth a hundred times until the music volume is neither too loud nor too quiet, alt+tab out again when the fight is over, then realize there's more enemies 20 seconds later, alt+tab out and realize that a lot of games don't respond too well to alt+tabbing... But call me lazy.

Imagine something like this mix plays in a DMC6, but Dante was forced to be the slave, and Vergil is forced to kill Dante in the end, and shedding a single tear, he leaves Yamato behind, loosely quoting Dante in DMC1 "Now father is here too, rest peacefully...brother" and for the first time, Vergil has an overwhelmingly sad and pissed off voice, and Vergil finally ends the threat of Mundus forever, and again loosely quotes Dante in DMC1 "If you ever return, give my regards to Nero...MY SON"

Kind of wish the game let you import custom songs and assign them to characters.
Yes sure, you could just turn off the music volume, alt+tab out of the game every time a fight starts, start the song, go back and forth a hundred times until the music volume is neither too loud nor too quiet, alt+tab out again when the fight is over, then realize there's more enemies 20 seconds later, alt+tab out and realize that a lot of games don't respond too well to alt+tabbing...
But call me lazy.
