Correction on target Luminance. Its only for Converting HDR to SDR to take advantage of this feature. Its 's not for HDR playing only. So it's useless, Unless you're converting HDR to SDR.
Hey there TechnoDad, I noticed you have an Panasonic UB820 as well. I’m sure (by now) that you have an opinion of both (and which one has the edge, or is superior). Can you PLEASE do a compare/contrast with the Oppo? (Please note, at the end, which one is the BEST [and why] - (I really don’t want to spend $2 grand on the now [priced] Oppo if I don’t have to. Also, what is your opinion of the HUGE price of the Oppo presently. - Thanks (and keep up the good work ;-)
Hi Techno Dad, I'm planning in purchasing the ub900. I would just like to ask if the player can bitstream HD(lossless) Audio in mkv movies played using the USB slot of the ub900? Thank you very much...
At 12:05, he says it is only a 1080P input, but according to Page 17 of the online manual, 4K is supported: download.oppodigital.com/UDP203/UDP-203_USER_MANUAL_ENGLISH_V1.0.pdf "The HDMI IN port on the rear of the player ALLOWS FOR THE CONNECTION OF 4K CONTENT from external sources such as a streaming set-top box, cable/satellite boxes, game consoles, computers and even other Blu-ray and UHD players. The incoming signal is processed by the player and output to your connected devices, allowing you to take advantage of the player's built in audio and video processing capabilities.
This is the most comprehensive review of the Oppo on TH-cam. Excellent job! I didn't realize the nits go up to 1600 now. I wonder if that was done in an update. I'm curious if it will actually make a difference because I actually have a TV that can go higher then 1000.
kwazykilla87 Thanks! I found out a whole lot about this player in the last few months. Yeah, I didn't think it would go to 1600 either, I thought 1000. I gotta start reviewing the other players! I got a lot of movies to watch, haha!
I'm probably going to pick this one up. It has everything I want and is very good at upscaling. This should make up for the TCL p-series 4K TV's lackluster upscaler.
+The Ignored Gender This is the best 4K player in my opinion. I'm not 100% sure if the HDMI input on the Oppo can utilize the upscaler. If it can, then you can route your cable or satellite box through the Oppo and it should be vastly better than the TVs internal scaler. Buy with this link please: bit.ly/OP203
Will this play mkv files (mostly 20-40gb movies, h264 with dts, dts hd audio) burned to bluray disk as data disk? I mean it can perfectly play fine from usb. But what about playing it from disk without converting to bluray format? Or it doesn't matter? If it can play them thru usb it will perfectly play from data disk also?
great video very informative. something to keep in mind when its time to upgrade to that player later this year. do u think this player will work well with a samsung dolby atmos soundbar
Thanks for the hard work on the video sucks you could not show video. I have a question a guy from Best Buy told me the Sony the $300 one was better than the Oppo $550 picture wise what's your opinion which one's better and I would love for you to do a video on the LG up970 because I was strongly considering getting that one because it does both hdr10 and Dolby vision for $300 I trust your judgement then most if the LG is good and better than decent I'm going with the LG depending on what you review it on thanks.
Dwain Robertson I have both. I would say they are close in PQ. You can order the oppo from a magnolia in Best Buy. I have the oppo and would choose it over the x800.
Hi technodad thanks for the reply ,I've had the 203 for a few days now and following your adivice of the settings Having watched superman 5 times on blue ray decided to watch again for the upscaling ... Picture was fine but didn't see a massive difference on picture quality . Do I need to try to adjust a setting for upscaling ? Regards David
Hello, my question is if you have an LG Oled and you use the Tv to do your upscaling, what is the advantage of the Oppo 203 vs the Sony? I know the Oppo has Dolby Vision, but is that really worth 3-4 times as much ($150 vs $550)? Especially when there isn't much DV content available right now, plus the Sony could get a firmware update and I'm sure there will be plenty more 4K players to chose from next year with DV. I guess I don't see why you would spend so much more for the Oppo when you could use the Sony in the exact same way (figuring you use Direct Source mode and let the LG Oled do the upscaling)? Am I missing something here? Thanks!
Oppo is said to be the best at upscaling DVD's. And Sony seems to have a lot of complaints over on the Sony forum RE: reliability. Otherwise I felt the same as you up to this point.
Damn that E7 makes everything look so juicy. Can't wait to get one, or maybe the C7 if i catch it under $3K. Currently using the 2016 P Series Vizio (65").
TD got a question for ya. My 203 has acted strange since I got it. If I try to bring up a menu screen on the Denon, like “setup” or “info” the OPPO picture completely cuts out to a black screen. Also, when I adjust the volume on the Denon no volume bar appears on the screen. With all of my other sources the volume and settings just overlay on top of the source material on the tv screen. Lastly, at boot up it takes a while for the image f on the OPPO to show the picture....meaning the sound of the movie might be playing, but the OPPO video source cuts in and out for a few seconds before finally stabilizing and acting normal. These were my thoughts: 1). Bad HDMI (or not fast enough) 2). Some weird setting in the 203’s setting 3). My Denon is messed up Any thoughts? Have you ever had your Denon on-screen display not display over the top of your TV (only on the Denon screen itself) Or have the video on your TV turn Black when adjusting the Denon settings? Just seems like the Denon menu is having trouble overlaying on top of the OPPO image.... Thanks in advance.
Hey! Sorry, I didn't see this earlier. The Denon not overlaying the volume is due to Dolby Vision content playing. I noticed that bug when my X6300H got the DV pass-through update. Volume meter is gone. When running HDR10 content, it's there again. So try putting in a movie that isn't Dolby Vision and it should be fine. Same goes with the setup or info button on the Denon when playing DV content.
+The Ignored Gender I would imagine the TVs would be discounted, but I'm not 100% sure. I just ordered the Sony X900E to test that, and it's price is down $100 to $1200. Not sure if they are going to drop it again.
techno dad let me know how it works if you do get, because i bought last year the X850D and i love it but hate it at the same time,. as it has great colors the menu is great all in all a great TV..... BUT it has an amazing amount of light bleed and i first experienced it with the movie hacksaw ridge movie in 4k UHD in dark scenes the screen flashes like a strobe light when bombs blow up or something bright appears, it drives me nuts..
hi Techodad thanks for these videos . Has the volume button any use as my sky q and tv remote can both adjust volume on bose 300 but nothing from the 203 even with the hdmi CEC turned on ?
Hey man, I had the Panasonic and I saw the exact video from hdtvtest like u I guess..and I wrote Vincent who is doing the videos. Actually, I am pretty sure, he made some mistakes that make the Oppo look a bit worse. This chroma stuff and so on might not be correct and stuff like that, I checked twice. So, as far as I am concerned, I am loving the Oppo, too.
+Metal Klobo I don't think I would go in for $599 or $699. I won't let go of my Oppo. I can't believe Sony has a $699 player that looks almost exactly like its $299 player. Not sure what they are doing, but if it has the horrible menus like the X800, I'm not too sure people will be jumping to buy one.
Yep man I think you are right. You know, as I live in Germany, the prices are a bit different. I bought the Pana Player like from the start for 650 Euros...instead of 800..it was a special deal for I also bought the 65 E6 as well. And then...in february this year, I bought the Oppo for 850 Euros...yes...850...they are bleeding us bone dry...and imho this one is THE player to get
Techno Dad thanks for responding. Nowthat makes me upset that my oled55c7p is really a Dolby Vision 10. Why does every article I find claim dolby visions 68 billion colors?
Im only on old smart phone so cant watch video until I get home but how is the cinavia protection on this player? From dvd-r/bd-r and through usb harddrives?
Techno Dad, 1. Will this player play video from external hard disk thro' USB port? 2. Will it play mkv file with ATMOS track from external hard disk 3. Will it play 3D OU/SBS mkv files?
+Senthil Kumar Natarajan Hi! Everything is restricted to 4GB files due to Fat32 HDD formatting. It has played mts files with Atmos, in not sure about mkv with Atmos. Like I said, as long as the files are over 4GB, you won't be able to get them on the HDD
Techno Dad hi, do you mean that the oppo cannot read hard drives that are not fat32 (ntfs) or that your hard drive is fat32 so you couldn't tryout anything bigger than 4gb? Also if that's the case could you try to borrow a hard drive that's ntfs and try to play a large mkv with atmos? Also do you know if the oppo can playback .iso files directly?
I wish the Sony had a front display. I was going to get the new Samsung model but I'm hearing that they dropped 3-d support. So if the picture quality of the Sony is on par with the oppo I'll save a couple of bucks and go with Sony.
+marcy419 Hi! I've noticed some strange color with the Samsung. Will post a video about it soon. The PQ of the Sony is pretty good. On par with the Oppo. I'm having some strange issues with the Sony. It won't eject at times, and thinks it's reading a disc when nothing's in the tray. I've had to unplug the Sony and plug it back in. Then it senses the disc, and can run apps and/or open the tray.
Nice TV! I am planning on getting the 49" for my bedroom. It's a great priced LCD with FALD. I searched around and found some conflicting numbers. But it seems to be somewhere in the high 800s. So I would set it to 900. Here are a couple of reviews you should read: 1. referencehometheater.com/review/sony-x900e-tv-review/ 2. www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2017/05/08/sony-xbr-65x900e-kd-65xe9005-4k-tv-review-great-pictures-without-breaking-the-bank/#7b2aaa8d13e6 Hope that helps!

Techno Dad always great video going to buy a new player and by the way I have that concord super audio jazz cd good cd , which one should i buy the oppo 203 , Panasonic ub900 or the new sony ubp x1000 es have 2 sony es cd player there are great
+jarvisis akito I would recommend the Oppo due to the fact hat it's the only one that supports Dolby Vision currently. If your TV does not support DV, or if that's not an issue, just go with the cheapest of those three you mentioned.
Techno Dad thanks you and modernwize said the same thing so it will be the Oppo , not a gamer and want a 75 inch for TV and movies and music DVD , wanted a oled but a 77 was a no in price so going to buy the Sony 75x940e on black Friday that's a yes in price
Hi Technodad, watching your videos from Czech Republic. I recently bought Panasonic UDP-700 player, but I need to change it for something else. The problem is I have 4TB and 5TB external hard discs but later I noticed some specifications and Panasonic cannot handle more than 2 TB (also tried 2TB 2.5" My Passport and Panasonic still couldn't read it). So I bought 750 GB external hard disc and guess what! Still couldn't read it! So it pissed me off totally and I got rid of it. Can you confirm that Oppo will have not such problems? What is the maximum external hard disc capacity it can handle? And one more question, does it handle well subtitles in mkv files - both internal and external? Thanks! Regards
+stefansdoom Hi! What format are those drives in? Most players will only be able to read Fat32 an MSDOS format. I know the Oppo will not read anything I have that is formatted for MacOS.
Does your TV support Dolby Vision? If the AVR supports DV passthrough, then just put HDMI 1 into the AVR. If your TV supports DV, but the AVR doesn't, from the Oppo, you need to go from HDMI 1 to TV, and HDMI 2 to AVR. If your TV does not support DV, then HDMI 1 to AVR.
+ericimi The Oppo doesn't stream anything. It's strictly a media player. So far, it's the only 4K player that supports DV. The LG player is supposed to support it, but we don't know when that is going to happen. The Sony player is good, but no DV support and the home screen is horrible. The Samsung m9500 seemed okay, but I can hear the disc spinning from 10 ft away. The Samsung was also $400 when it came out and it has issues with my budget LG TV, so it got returned. Then there's the XB1S which doesn't play certain 4K UHD discs. So all in all, if you want something that works, has all the features, and is quality unit, you save up and get the Oppo.
Correction on target Luminance. Its only for Converting HDR to SDR to take advantage of this feature. Its 's not for HDR playing only. So it's useless, Unless you're converting HDR to SDR.
+FADETOBLACK Gotcha! Thanks for the input!

Why are these so ridiculously expensive used when a Panasonic 9000 is available?
People seem to want the HDMI input, I suppose. Also, these will play M2TS and BDMV folders. The Panasonic players cannot.
Hello, great video. I have one question? Is it region free?
It's this simple. If you can afford it, buy it!
That's right!!

Hi! Probably not. It's not going to be a huge difference. If you have a high end 4K TV, it might upscale better than the 203.
Many thanks.
I have an option to buy the Oppo 103, does it support Atmos or Dolby vision? I can't find anything online. I can buy it for $100 like brand new.
Hi Ryan, that's an older model and doesn't support 4K HDR. The only Oppo that support 4K HDR are the UDP-203 and UDP-205.

Good stuff bro.
Dukeoden7458 Hi! Thanks!
Which port on the oppo do I use to plug into the sc lx901
Does your TV support Dolby Vision? If the AVR supports DV passthrough, then just put HDMI 1 into the AVR. If your TV supports DV, but the AVR doesn't, from the Oppo, you need to go from HDMI 1 to TV, and HDMI 2 to AVR. If your TV does not support DV, then HDMI 1 to AVR.
Techno Dad I'll be using the Lg oled65ep
Dolby vision movies are coming June
+martin Bat I saw that! Can't wait! Just need the update now!!
I can hear someone snoring in the background lol
+Keeman Lol! That's my dog!! Hahahaha!!
TH-cam copyright bullshit.
I always thought if you talk over short clips you would be free and clear of copyright infringement.
Use some of that money to update home
Would not pay the money for it
I still say this is over priced it only plays discs and then does what a Roku does . The only thing I like is the HDMI audio out .
Techno Dad the Sony will knock that overpriced cheap Chinese made thing on it's ass
