Thanks for posting this video. My grand father was a comercial fisherman. He made all of his own nets .this is something I haven't seen done since I was a young kid. He tried to teach me how to knit but I never could get it .
This is the best set of vids that I have found on net making!! We have horses and a lot of that baling twine just going to waste. Or at least it was! Thank you for taking the time to make such a concise instructional vid. I'm going to make some nice hay feed nets and cargo nets for my trucks! [pickup trucks]
Wow, this is the same method my father uses to make hammocks accept without the use of the tools. He uses his fingers to make the size of the loop then just uses the previous loop to pull the line to the exact same size. Also the same process to make cast nets. Your video makes the knot & looping more simplied than the way my family does it. Great video & keep up the awesome work.
Thanks Felix! All the best net makers do it the way your father does it, by feel and instinct. The method I use is great for people who haven't done it all their lives or are just learning. Thanks and all the very best.
Finally got some fence wire and made a triangle. I prefer it purely because all the twine is attached at the ring so theres no chance of it sliding around the ring. Thanks again.
Hi Chris. I use two sizes of needle both of which are 10 inches long. The thinner one is 5/8 inch wide, the thicker one is 3/4 inch wide. Hope this helps and all the very best.
Thanks for your series of videos on net making! Excellent teacher, clear and easy to understand... Have you made hoop nets before, for fishing? Forming a Rosette and so on. I would like to learn how to make a 30 inch hoop net with 5 hoops and 2 flews.
Yes pal. The triangle is used instead of the ring and the main advantage is that you have a bigger object to thread a fully loaded needle through.(as against a relatively small 1" ring) The triangle can be made out of galvanised wire, and the bottom side of it needs the ability to be unclipped, so that you can slide it off at the end to tie on the ring. After you have knitted the first row, then there is little advantage to the triangle method, however It is the method I now use most of the time
A mesh board that is 1.5 inches wide, will make a 1.5 x 1.5 inch square mesh. The difference in size is that when a mesh is pulled diagonally, it is 3 inches long, and is sometimes described as such. I hope this makes sense, and helps you.
wonderful video congratulations with the same technique you can do anything such as bracelets, earrings, rings, necklaces, belts etc. if the answer is yes could make videos from the beginning and end it thanks I follow her now that I have found her thank you
@Ghelimir I will hve a play around sometime and see if I can work out a way of doing it. It isnt essential but it does give you a nice tidy final knot. Nylon is awefull for knitting nets, and spun poly is much softer but very strong, if you can get it.
Hi mate this are very good videos I've learnt a lot from concerning I'm new to ferreting ive resently started making my own nets and was wondering whats the smallest net you could make for example I've just made one 6 meshes across and 12 meshes down is that two small much respected Jamie?!.
Hi bud. Look at the video I did on "tying on the bottem ring". The final knot to finish the top ring is exactly the same. Tie on the bottem ring and then turn the net around and finish the top ring in the same method. You dont need to finish off the top ring until the net is complete.
@heidbrain Hello, I buy all my twine from Agouti, and it is Spun Polyester. It is better than spun nylon and feels more natural. Also the knots will not slip. Just type Agouti nets into your search engine.
The cord is "spun polyester" but I dont know where abouts in Italy you could buy it, maybe do a search on the internet. I am not sure what the breaking strain is, but it can come in different thicknesses. It is strong enough for any small animals including foxes, and all fish, and I am guessing you could use it to make a hammock.
Reallistically 3ft nets are about the smallest which would need to be about 18 meshes long by 15 wide. The net you have mentioned willonly be about 2ft long by 1ft wide depending on the size of your mesh board. Personally, 3ft6" are about the smallest nets that I will make.
I noticed that when you tie on the bottom ring you join all the meshes so that they don't slip apart. Isn't there some way to tie on to the top ring so that they don't slip apart either? I've tried a few hitches other than the clove but nothing seems to be working so far. It probably wouldn't be that big of a deal but I'm using super cheap nylon mason line and it's slipperier than a greased up deaf guy.
Please help, am i right in thinking the mesh board size is double the size of the finished mesh size. i.e most people want a 1.5 size for emergency gill net, so a mesh board of 3 would make this net??
When you get to the end of the net and tie on the bottom ring as per my video entitled the same, then slide the net off the triangle and tie the top ring onto the net exactly the same way. I will attempt to send you a photo of my triangle shortly. Hop this helps pal.
I don't see where you ever show how to make the final knot with the 60 to 70 cm of cordage that you left out at the beginning. Is that shown in one of the videos?
he made a wooden needle in a new video here: /watch?v=eUUz-_3zRlk where i commented a link to this video, because i think you are making the easiest to follow videos here on youtube. thanks for that
You have the CLEAREST, MOST CONSISE videos on netmaking. They are seriously under viewed!! Thank you for making them

Kelly. You are very welcome, thank you for the kind comment.
Thank you for your patience and instruction. It's a pleasure watching you work.
+Uncle Duke and thank you for the very kind comment. All the very best.

Great instruction, I have watched a few people on TH-cam and none have shown it or explained it as well as you have, Thanks...
Thank you my friend, I am glad that you find the tutorials easy to follow :)
Craftsman at work,I'd love just 1 of those nets!Orange please
My friend thanks for your help, Gracias 🇵🇷🎶🎹

thank you so much. i will be using this to make nets for fishing and to make baskets for plants. mahalo from molokai hawaii

Hi, Could you show how to join the rows to make the net a circle? Please!
Your videos are very clear and to the point. Thank you so much.

Thanks Chris. I am not sure what tex, but the twine is 1.4mm diameter and has a stated breaking strain of 22KP.
All the very best.

Brilliant thanks Ill be trying this as soon as I get hold of a piece of fence wire.
Doing something challenging brings a great confidance.

Hi,you make it look easy !, what type/brand/size of needle is that please ?
@CGLouisiana Thanks mate, really glad you enjoyed the video, kind words.
now i learned it from you! thank you
Thank you Sir. 👍
Thank you sir, what size TEX is the netting material?
You are a superb teacher!!
Glad you are sorted pal.
Hello freedom Ive heard a couple of people mention knitting onto a triangle and sowing both rings on at the end. Do you know how thats done?
I noticed that when you tie on the bottom ring you join all the meshes so that they don't slip apart. Isn't there some way to tie on to the top ring so that they don't slip apart either? Where do you purchase your aluminum mesh boards at?
Thank you sir, Now I got some Idea of what to do with my swing,
OK, i'm all lined up on my needle/shuttle but,,, if i was making a gill net would use a bit of para cord instead of a ring??
where do you get the colored twine. and what kind of twine is it ?(what is it made of)? i live in the U.S.A.
When you get to the end of the net and tie on the bottom ring as per my video entitled the same, then slide the net off the triangle and tie the top ring onto the net exactly the same way. I will attempt to send you a photo of my triangle shortly. Hop this helps pal.
thanks for the info for Agouti.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you.
Paracord would be fine, I guess, but just keep it tight. I have not made a gill net before tho.
I will have a look at that. Thanks for the comment bud.
i have a load of really nice and sturdy wooden rings (same size) is their any reason i couldnt use those?
+upolonose 00 Not at all. Best of luck
Cheers for that, i'll have look for one thanks.
Any idea if you can use your techniques to make hay nets for horses? Karen x
I would be guessing but I would say in principle yes, but with thicker twine.
freedomofabird Ok cool! What thickness are you using? Kx
I think it is about 2mm off memory
Thanks for the kind comment!!
Ok thanks for replying
Do you make this stainless steel spacer or where did you buy it, thank you very much, Michel Quebec
You can make them out of anything really, stainless, Perspex, aluminium etc. The edges must be smooth though.
what size H needle are you using sir?
I don't see where you ever show how to make the final knot with the 60 to 70 cm of cordage that you left out at the beginning. Is that shown in one of the videos?
Where did you buy the needle I can't find one anywhere
+Peter O Reilly Try www.gaelforcemarine.co.uk
+Peter O Reilly You need the Formfinder needle 200-250mm and about 14-16mm wide
freedomofabird thanks im gonna give my own nets a rattle using your tutorials
+Peter O Reilly Ok thanks. The place I bought mine has shut down now, but the formfinders look identical
Its a "Loomis". If you look them up on the internet you should find them.
what cord do you use to make the nets and where do you get it from ?
Google Spun Polyester twine and you should get a good selection. Fourteen Acre sells it.
thank you
Foab 👍

oh ok then, so when people say 1.5 inch for a perfect survival gill net, it is using a 1.5 inch mesh board, thanks for your time
