I’m not gonna lie, I don’t crate train my puppy. We tried it... and I didn’t like it. We sleep together every night and I don’t regret my decision. I do think it’s important to try! But we tried, and it just didn’t end up working for us. I still use a lot of your tips though. And I have a very happy and well-behaved 12-week old pupperoni ❤️ we’re starting puppy classes in 2 weeks but he already knows his sit, stay, down, and come! Just looking to loose-leash train and see if we can pick up any additional tips from the puppy classes. Then, onto agility! My smart boy loves the mental stimulation - tricks, puzzles, burrow toys, he amazes me every day. Being a dog mommy has been the most rewarding thing for me.

Luring and shaping for any dog, especially puppies builds engagement more than anything else. All that interaction in a teaching scenario builds the relationship so much. Trust, respect and being the most fun thing in your dog's life are just happy side benefits.
This will make you laugh. I finally found my puppy. He is tiny Chihuahua mix. He was listed as a she. At 65 you'd think I would have noticed.
I am suspecting a puppy mill that I rescued just in time. He was so skinny. I am glad I saved him and after 3 days of good food he is a normal looking pup.

Guys....if you're getting a puppy...100% Crate train them!! As well, use a playpen in the kitchen to keep them contained in a small area so they arent destroying everything. My chocolate lab is a year and a half, but by the time she was 9 weeks old she looooved her crate. Now its her favourite place to nap and she puts herself to bed there every night at 8 on the dot...lol
Puts herself to bed? it's not a baby, its a dog bro..
you have to supervise your puppy.. Catch the behaviour of "destroying everything" before it happens, puppies learn very quick if you correct them, and reward good behaviour.

I tell new puppy owners that it takes two to raise a puppy and i also tell them raising a puppy is like raising a kid from newborn to two years. It's a bit exaggerated but I just want to be real with them because that's what it feels like to me.
You're not exaggerating 1 bit..... Hell, I'd say 2 years of puppyhood is like raising a human from 0-18....with allll the teenage drama that goes along with that.

Great teaching session. It amazes me how people bring a puppy in with no structure or training plan and just think the dog will learn how to be well behaved playing with children playing rough with them and no safe place (kennel). Sherman is a high drive Shepherd, 9 months old and when I say crate he goes to it, opens the door, and goes inside

I baught one after hearing about it from you. You can really get a sense of how your dog is feeling and you can keep easily track of your dog. Great product
25:20 I think you should definitely comfort a puppy of 8 weeks old into his new home and evironment, for atleast a day or 2, and socialise him with the sounds around the house, before starting to food lure him into positions.

I have a 10 wk old border collie mix. Smartest dang dog ever. I’m in awe of how quickly she learns. I’m an avid crate trainer. Let’s be real. Going potty in the house is a serious no-no, as is a furry, happy little maniac with no boundaries. I’m very structured with her schedule and Iris is thriving. Your videos are so helpful! I watch the puppy ones over and over to both teach me and keep me focused on just how important training is. A long-winded way of saying thank you:)
you can have boundaries without having to lock a puppy in a crate. My 4 month old sheltidoodle just chills on the carpet when i'm vaccuum'ing or cooking/cleaning. I did do a lot of socialising training, with the vaccuum etc.
I crate trained my toy poodle a little bit, but he never goes potty inside anymore. Only on the bathroom on a puppy pad if i can't find my keys in time.
Hello Robert, I have a 8 week old doberman, received him at 7 weeks. We have a 7 year old very calm shipoo. We keep the puppy in the crate and feed him in the crate, I placed my dogs bed in next to the crate and he sleeps comfortably, once we allow the puppy to play with the shipoo he charges at him and the older dog gets scared and starts barking at the puppy, the puppy keeps going after the other dog until I get involved and ask him to sit and they both sit and relax, I’ve been training the puppy alone and in a quiet place doing all the training sessions you put in videos. I want to structure my doberman very well, he still seems to be very not focused at times but the snacks are working well. I also allow my 10 year old son and 7 month daughter to play with the puppy very supervise and he seems to play with them but he’s too rough and I put him back in the crate with toys. Thanks Robert. It’s getting better slowly.
yeah just brought home 4 month old puppy now i have a pac hes very cute little Pomeranian. now i have 3 Pomeranians im in heaven.
I think the need for litter training comes from places like Uk where often puppies aren't not yet fully vaccinated to go outside. often the puppies are 8 weeks old and have first jag but 2nd does come until 10 week sthen its 2 weeks after to be sure. distempa & parovirus are rift here & kill puppies so few take the risk, also lots of foxes in gardens.
soooo true. We just a farm puppy and we live in the city. I felt so bad becuause she was so scared when we 1st got her. She still is working it out, but is getting better. We got her at 10 weeks. I didn't know about the kids thing.....I really hope they introduced her to kids. cuz we haven't. We just aren't around any kids. We onl;y really see our family at holidays.

Wow, my puppy was one of a single litter. Raised on a hobby ranch, no experience to cars. Never exposed to kids, didn't have exposure to lots of people or dogs and I didn't get her until she was 6 months old. Hey check every box on the wrong side of raising, but hey she's good with horses. :( Did I mention that she is an insanely high energy miniature aussie.

Limping in cold situations can be from the salt that is everywhere on the roads and gets between the paws of the dog.
I live in a 19' travel trailer and often still leash my 13 month old shepherd husky mixes. I have modified my camper to better accommodate a crate and open up the floor plan. I was in an apartment when I got my girl dog. At 5.5 weeks old the guy told me to come get my dog. That appalled me but I wanted my dog so I went and got her. My cat was bent when I commandeered his crate to use for the puppy. But I couldn't allow her to roam my apartment while I was sleeping. I am a huge fan of crates!!! I would load her in the crate in the truck and seatbelt it in. When she outgrew the cat crate she was well behaved enough to harness in the back seat. Her brother on the other hand I acquired later as an abuse case. Holy hell describes what I got myself into. Her training backslid and it has taken months to start getting back on track because of having to undo bad behaviors that he has in order to teach him the wanted ones. I am making headway with the littermate syndrome, although slowly. With leash walking, I seem to be good with the halti but prefer the gentle leader brand because of the padding on the inside of the nose bridge part.
It is SO true that you either train the dog or the dog trains you!

We lost our sweet old Whippet a week before Christmas, and have decided to take 2-3 months break before we look into getting a pup. In that time, your grieving videos have been a comfort, and your puppy podcasts have been so helpful in retraining my own mind, and reminding me about the true foundations/responsibilities of puppy rearing.
I’d be curious to know if you’ve ever worked with Whippets, and what your thoughts are on this breed?
The girlfriend and I got puppy just over a month ago, she is a German shepherd(father) mixed with husky(mom) 3 months old now and is taking the training well. I'm jobless at the moment so I spend most of my day working her.
She was anxious for the first few weeks when outside and scared of everything, Ive tackled it so that she doesn't instantly try to get away by having her sit while outside and people are walking by or about to and giving her a treat either during or after the person passed us, she usually checks in on me during the sit.
She recently - last few weeks - started to bark a lot, when she sees people in the distance she barks, when strangers get too close to her or talks to her while maintaining eye contact with her she either barks or growl at them.
Been trying to avoid situations like this by placing her and myself in ways so that there is distance and praising her when she sits quietly but it is difficult for me to get her to maintain eye contact with me in such situations. Which I take is because she is anxious.
I'm unsure if more socialization is the way to go or if I should just keep up the passive "strangers aren't an immediate threat" approach
This only happens with humans by the way, usually men who are older and bigger looking.
Some more info:
I usually feed around half of her first meal of the day during the walk and then the remaining half at the end or at home in her cage, she doesn't fear going outside and really wants to go on walks but due to the many distractions she does not want to play tug or fetch even when in areas that are more secluded.
She responds surprisingly well to commands unless there is strangers approaching us or if there is food laying around on the ground and can go off leash without any real trouble at night without failure of recall. Granted I don't do that very often because i shouldn't trust my training like that and she haven't had that much training yet.
Great job so far. You're doing everything right. Spend some time developing calm behaviors, especially when out. Use a long line to give more freedom until you have a good recall. Find a good spot to just hang out when you're out where there are people present at a distance just going about their business. Take a picnic with you and make lunch an event for both of you. Ignore the craziness and reward the calm. Don't fixate on single events, look at the overall progress. Are things getting worse or better (even a little bit). Distracting with eye contact is a wonderful thing. Practice it LOTS. Just say "watch me" (or your preferred cue) and treat. Build it slowly. Do it 5 sessions of 5 reps a day for a month. Use your finger to guide the dog to look at your eyes in the beginning (you may have already done this). Dogs understand what it means when we point. Get better at taking action to stop your dog getting worked up the moment it starts. Try and avoid letting it happen and then trying to correct. That will make it worse, not better. It's much better to correct for breaking eye contact once it's well conditioned, it's much easier on the dog as he will be able to focus back much easier.
Long term, I'd be looking at developing play drive and then have typical trigger people engage the dog in a play scenario. Fetch initially is ideal as it's non conflict, then tug (conflict) for confidence and rehabbing conflict sourced aggression. Anyone involved needs to be able to not react at all if the dog does react badly and ideally be experienced enough to know how much pressure to put on the dog. You need to keep the desire to engage in the game above the fear of playing the game with a "scary" person.

It's my first time training a puppy so I wanna make sure I get it right, or as right as it can get on the first try. It is very much a mutual learning experience.
I have not been using a long line that much due to the negative factors I've been reading and hearing about, but training the recall like that makes a lot of sense so I will definitely be doing that.
All the tips are much appreciated and I'll definitely be trying them out.
if you think get a puppy, especially these large breeds, please please check those breeders, the most important thing is, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, I am so fucking sad now, I have a malamute (5 years old big boy) and a European doberman (1.5 years old 40kg+ boy) both of them have problems with their bones. The malamute had a surgery when he was 4-5 months, now he can run but not 100% healthy, I got my beloved doberman puppy from this Russian doberman kennel club, I got him x-ray checked when he was 4 months old, the doctor said he was fine, the I got really busy with my job, two months ago, when I walked him in the morning, he was a little limp, by that time he was 13 months old, I got him x-ray checked again, the doctor said he is not ok, but he also doesn’t need surgery, he will walk like that all his life!! That was heart breaking! So please always check these breeders! Take good care of your puppy!
Too many clueless people buy puppies and have NO idea what they are doing! Waiting until you have a dog to start YOUR training is foolish. YOUR training should start months before the dog arrives. Robert spends more time trying to answer questions after question from foolish owners that have not done research and end up with huge problems THEY have created. There are no quick fixes for lazy owners that create problematic behaviors in their own dogs. The owners need the training! Robert love your straight forward approach! You can not help them all lol
My past pit got frostbite because we were out 5 minutes too long. Frostbite can range from mild to severe. His was mild and I had to end the walk and take him home.

Wondering if you should start training a puppy with loud noises right away. I had a dog that became terrified of loud noises. I ended up working with him to make it a little better but was very stressful to him.

I have a 4 month old Giant Schnauzer. I’m using a lot of ur methods. Working out very well. I researched this breed for a very long time, so I knew exactly what to expect. My breeder and vet were very informative also. I wish people would do their homework before getting certain breeds. Thank you peace ✌️

I got my Mal at 12 weeks old from a reputable Malinois breeder who titled her Malinois in IPO. Right off the bat I exposed him to dogs, people, children... any kind of environment I could. He is a very level headed, confident, playful and friendly dog. Except towards other dogs. I brought him to dog parks as a puppy a couple times per week and also exposed him to my friends dogs. He was always very playful and had a lot of fun with them. At around 7 months old he began being very aggressive towards other dogs he did not know. Since then, I now have to be careful on how I introduce him to new dogs. Did I do something wrong or is it his genetics?
Sometimes it’s genetics but also the issue with high drive dogs who get frustrated and they frustration can turn to aggression.
Can you make a video on Zac George’s controversial video. He is a popular TH-cam dog trainer. I think your input and perspective would be interesting. Also you could speak on training mistakes. 🤷♀️

I have 10 months old male staffy who’s well trained, started straight away with school and still in it.. socialising him, lots of run and forest
But lately he is starting to be jumpy/humping bigger male dogs(the ones he dont know). It happened 2 times now, both times I put him back on the leash and I waited till he is wasn’t so excited anymore, when he is breathing normally I will let him run and he is fine and respectful again. But I’m scared This will go worse? My current trainer said I should neuter him? I do not want to neuter him to make my life easier, I would do it only if it’s good for him but I’m ready to work with this behaviour.
( we don’t go to dog parks we have our community with beautiful great dogs and sometimes someone brings their friend and new well behave dogs we don’t know yet )

How old should a puppy be when you first put on a prong on?
My 3 month old German Shepherd is doing great I walk him alone scared of cars a little bit but getting better. He wants to wrestle with my pitbull non stop, the pit loves it but puppy won’t stop when other dog is finished, I normally put leash on him or put in crate. Am I doing right thing? Is 12 hours a day to long in crate? Obviously he’s let outside for bathroom. And is walked 2-4 miles a day.

Hi Robert I have a similar problem with my choc 10 month old Lab going over excited when she sees another dog while heelinf well on a lead. No treat settles her and she resists sitting when told to. We don't have play parks but she has had canine friends over on occasions but seldomly. Electric collars are banned in the state of New South Wales in Australia. Is it time for a prong collar?

our beagle has been acting weird around our puppy all of a sudden. He used to put up with a lot! Now he's over it. And I may be reading too much into this...but he almost seems defensive. If she is misbehaving and the puppy bites my wife and she says a firm loud NO or she yells OW (her legs are covered in bruises from bites) the beagle will fly outta nowhere and football tackle the puppy. Or the BC who tolerates even less from the puppy will bull charge her. Im worried cuz eventually she WILL be bigger than both of them
Hi - i'm in the UK and have a 17 wk puppy. As a result of covid restrictions socialising with other dogs is tricky. She isnt getting enough in my opinion. She's clearly a an intelligent dog and other aspects are going well. Any tips - or is it as simple as 'she needs to be around other dogs as much as possible anyway' ?? May sound like an obvious answer to this I know. Thanks

This video was very helpful! But I still have some questions. 1. I know that having a puppy with older well trained larger or medium female breeds would be pretty easy because of their loving nature. But what about a Chihuahua? I've asked so many people in groups and they don't know how to answer. I have a 15 week old gsd, and a 18 year old Chihuahua. My Chihuahua is fine around other dogs, but this puppy bites her and tackles her, trying to play with her but it hurts my Chihuahua because she is so old. So we have to keep them in separate rooms but I think it's unfair for one of them to socialize with family while the other is not. My Chihuahua just wants to sit and cuddle and my puppy just wants to play and jump all over. I'm not sure how to handle it, I've tried slowly introducing them and other methods and restricting but it only lasts a few s seconds.
Robert loving ur vids.. so this is a discussion with a trainer i met here in the US.. He said pups should be socialize like in places with alot of people, dogs etc. but he said u should not let any stranger pet ur dog.. seeing is enough for socialization.. Whats ur take on this?

My gsp is about 10 days from 4 months I have only had him around my sister's dog at Christmas. He was nippy with her pup but playing . I haven't brought him around other dogs because of having his shots after each shot I had for him he was sick for at least a week. I was concerned about him getting parvo from other animals now I'm coming up on his last vaccination shot. I'm told I should socialize him. I guess I'm asking what should I do. I don't feel good about dog parks. He is introduced to many sounds. When I'm outside while playing fetch I'll be getting ready to come in and sometimes not always he will get this growl and go after my pants and nip on my calfs I do correct it but it makes me worry. After one vaccine he was sick I knew it tried picking him up on my lap and he nipped my noise with a growl. I know it was stupid to do. He was very hot. I just worry if that is aggression? Your input would be appreciated.

If your dog is pulling on a prong collar, it has failed as a tool for you and you need to change your strategy.
hi from México , i have 2puppys border Collier pf 3months and a half.. i go walk with them a diferent scenaries ,with cars, camp and a another .. i try to do some training but they only problem it's that one of thems is dime nerveos i barks everything and the other do the same Even when the other was calm and secure... i whant to try to keep out this .. what can i do? .. i think that it's not agressive it's more nerveous i think... in another thing it's difficult yo socialite with the problema of Coronavirus .. thanks and sorry for My english

Hello Roberto, I have now acquired a 4-month old Serra da Estrela dog, he has been with us for 5 days, he is still very suspicious and afraid especially with me. When I try to get closer he moves away, when he has nowhere else to go to lie on his back, without wagging his tail. With my children he already plays and runs after them.
When we go for a walk he is tense, he cannot see a dog that shows a very aggressive behavior.
What can I do ?

Does anyone have any opinions on the 5wk puppy syndrome- puppies removed from the litter before 8wks old? I see postings of puppies at shelters that have been bottle fed since they were days old because because of unforeseen circumstances with mom. Will these dogs always have behavioral issues as adults regardless of training? I can’t find may. Recounts of people who adopted a puppy prior to 8weeks and raised it to adulthood l.
i am getting a doberman puppy. the breeder has told me not to feed the pup a food with more than 21% crude protein as it will cause the front legs to grow to fast and possibly warp. has any one else heard about this as i never have.
would you say resource guarding is something a breeder would neuter for?
