    You're a busy guy, Jake! House remodeling, helping cats, fixing lights. There are more Penguin variants than I can shake a stick at, so they must be popular for a reason - and I still don't have one. I might have to do something about that. Glad you're doing ok, and thanks for sharing!

      Yeah, I have a lot on my plate but I only take small bites at any given time, usually.
      The Penguin design has become a bit of a phenomena, but it has also begun to get a bit more hype than it might be worth. I think many of the higher priced variants are very nice but not enough nicer to make them a better choice than their lower priced siblings - but remember, I tend to go for lower priced knives as a rule, so take that for whatever it's worth to you.

    Great review as always! Thank you Jake. I heard they will release a penguin that is a flipper with a button lock. I can’t wait. Do you have any inside connection to know how soon that would be released?

      Hi Dave!
      I have no inside connection on the release date for QSP knives, I find out when stuff is coming by following QSP on Instagram, but I have not been checking recently.

    How does it compare to the XL? Oh yes, that's right, I'm holding it my hand. 😂😊
    The Penguin family is a great little family. The blade is on the thick side for an everyday pocket knife, in my opinion - it'll peel an apple, but not cut it. But oh my is it beautiful and it is a great fidget knife, that XL is.
    Good work on the bathroom.
    How did it go with the cat? Did they find and relocate the whole family?
    All for now 😊 Simon

      To see them side by side watch the overview video that shows all 3 sizes.
      As for the blade thickness, all 3 sizes are very similar for things like cutting apples.
      The cat and kittens were rescued. I have no idea about their new homes.

      I know that I can see it there 🙃 but, then I couldn't find an indirect way to boast having it in my hand. ☺️
      Good to hear the cat and kittens have moved on.

    Do the numbers in 14c28n mean anything relating to the quality of the metal? 🤔

      14C28N
      C: 0.62; Cr: 14.00; Mn: 0.60;
      N: 0.11; P: 0.025; S: 0.010;
      Si: 0.20;
      Maker: Sandvik - Sweden (SE)
      Notes:
      Sandvik stainless steel, specifically developed as a knife blade steel. Initially, it was exclusive to Kershaw/Kai cutlery but is now also used by Italian knife company Nilte in their folders. Ontario offers a line of kitchen cutlery in this steel and it is recently being used by some Chinese manufacturers.
      The composition was first published in 2011, however, it was incorrect, listing the wrong Nitrogen content, 0.55%, instead of the correct value .11%. This data is no longer on the official Sandvik website.
      The addition of Nitrogen improves the corrosion resistance and hardness.
      Sandvik's recommended working hardness 55-62HRC. The alloy, when properly heat treated forms a very fine grain structure increasing edge retention. This steel sharpens quite easily and takes a very sharp edge.
      62HRC isn't considered a very high absolute hardness as there are many other alloys capable of 64-68HRC. However as hardness increases, chipping and brittleness start to come into play.
      Still, it is a very decent alloy, offering a balanced combination of corrosion resistance, edge stability, wear resistance and strength.

      Not quality, just the composition values
      You can have really good composition but really bad heat treatment and it'll be worse than budget steels like 440C(Which can be very very good if done right)
      The quality is very much dependant on the company that produces them tho

      There is no one standard way that companies name their steel type but often they do use the numbers to represent the most common elements used in the composition of the steel. For a newbie the metallurgy will take time to come to understand. If you are interested in learning about knife steel at a more academic level then check out this channel - www.youtube.com/@KnifeSteelNerds
      The quality of a metal is more complex than even many knife enthusiasts give it credit for, and cannot be explained in a Comments section. If you want to know if 14C28N is a good steel or not then here is my opinion: 14C28N is a knife steel. It is not cheap junk but it is also not a premium steel, but it is well worth the price that most companies charge for knives made with this steel. (Some companies overcharge for knives with 14C28N - or any other given steel, so remember that I am talking in generalities only).
