- If you have cream and dark brown water based paints in a matte finish you can create a Lime Wash look over an existing paint color. Let me show you how to dilute your paint, apply in crosshatches and blot the texture. Alternatively, you may use furniture waxes to achieve the look, shop your paint stash and see what you already have!

This is turning out to be a totally free project AND I'm using up some of my paint samples that I have been storing for years! I win, win. Which team are you - Team Lizzy or Team Charlotte?
Team Lizzy for this room! Love it!
Charlotte! Love the wallpaper. My mom was ahead of her time. Our living room growing up was long and the walls were a coffee with cream color with beige drapes, an Irish linen cream sofa sectional near the fireplace. The other side of the room had a Chinese red brocaded with fringe and tifted couch with dark turquoise chairs the same material. It was just lovely.
That sounds amazing!
noted!
Lizzy!
Very pride and prejudice! Love it!
Why do I want to do my 10 foot tall walls now?? It looks fabulous ❤❤!
The walls look amazing!
I really like this look. Beautiful color.
Very lovely. The look is almost textured and very rich. Nice job.
I love this technique! It looks amazing!
Team Lizzy!!! I love it
Oh my goodness! I love it! Love the brown at the end!
Stunning
So beautiful and artistically done. For me the brown makes such a difference! Love it!💝
Hi Sarah- it definitely needed the brown for added dimension. It looks lovely!❤
I love it!
I like the brown ❤
Team Lizzy but I do enjoy both homes. I love that your project was totally free. I always try to use what I have on hand.
Keep looking up! 😊. Soon and very soon😊
I'm excited and I'm only 2 minutes in! I love your entire aesthetic! I'm unemployed rn, so it's the perfect time to finally paint but I cannot afford to splurge on the lime wash.
Oh my! I absolutely love it!❤🇨🇦
Bravo! Love it.... funny thing is I was nervous for Colby to come home too
Looks like you achieved your goal
Team Lizzie absolutely! One of my most favourite films. ❤
Secretary, desk side is stunning!
Thank you!
Absolutely love it. So stunning 😍
I am a retired interior decorative painter. I called this technique a "colorwash". It was always my favorite decorative technique and my clients , as well. I loved it's "old world" look.
I always used a soft colowash brush, floetrol , and cheesecloth. ( Just a few helpful tips). Although I am great at "cutting in" around ceilings and trim, I always taped off. It gives you more freedom of movement an a crisper line. It is funny to see how trends go in and out. I did a home at least every week in this technique 20 years ago.
I think we will see it resurge. I also love Venetian Plaster.
Team Lizzy 🤩
Team Lizzy! It's my and my daughters favorite movie! We both own the movie! Lol
So much more depth to those walls now. WOW!
It's beautiful! At the beginning of the video, I had my doubts. But when you added the dark wax I was in awe. Really like it!
I appreciate so much your ability to speak without using fillers such as uhhh and ummm. It drives me crazy. Also, you get to the point in your conversation with your audience. Thank you as it makes listening to your videos a great pleasure. .
Not too long ago everyone was inserting “like” every second or third word. It drove me nuts. I couldn’t understand when adults started to do the same thing. Everyone seemed to want to turn into an ignoramus - on purpose!
Love it! ❤you are so creative - where did you get your cute olive overalls/jumper?? So cute !
They're from Amazon! rstyle.me/+aA6oWHW9ULTBoAJJYCvbwg
Oh my gosh, I absolutely LOVE how the wall looks! That was a great decision!
Thank you so much!
This is so gorgeous! Team Lizzy all the way! Wow. I love this idea too because there is no texture!
I loved this video - everything about it! The walls are so lovely and add another layer of character to your room. I also loved the pacing of this video - the explanation on your porch, the humor, the process you went through - all these things matter when attempting anything new... at least for me it's true! And your background music was also so sweet and calming. It is just a lovely video to watch - Well done!
The walls look beautiful! Great job 👍 You are so brave and creative!
Thank you so much!
Looks very rich. I like the depth it provides. I’m glad ( and surprised) you can paint over the wax. Our house is full of oil based paint so it’s a chore painting a base coat of Killz before getting to the good part of bringing color!🤪
Thank you, Helen! I love the depth, too!
I am glad you showed the movie inspiration, because I liked the walls before, but now I am team Lizzy. The brown made such a difference in mood.
Thank you so much!
@SheHoldsDearly
I'm glad you showed the movie clip too...I had never seen the movie or read the book. Now, I'm obsessed. I've watched every clip of the fabulous scenes, listened to every interview, and still can't get it out of my mind. I ordered the Pride and Predudice book. I'm a reader, I can't believe I've never read it before. I'm in my mid 80s. This Fall, I'll be sitting in my cozy chair with a cup of tea, an Edison bulb in my Tiffany lamp, a soft blanket over my legs that are propped up on my velvet ottoman, reading the genius of Jane Austen!❤
Thank you for enlightening this old woman......You really can learn something new everyday!
Love your posts. ❤❤❤
You just added that touch of whimsy the room needed! Bravo!!
Oh my god, team Lizzie ALWAYS!!!
Thank you so much!
I love that you are fearless!! It looks beautiful 😍
Thank you so much!
I definitely like it with the brown. Looks fantastic.
Thank you so much!
Sarah, you DO have an amazing creative design talent!!! My technical side is kicking up and so I need to ask "is the light blue" used the Country Grey Chalk paint listed in the "products"? If so, would it affect the end result if the 2024 pigment is slightly different than 2018/2019? The Purple Painted Lady explained why they changed. It appears this paint had a slight tinge of sage and now it uses greenish raw umber. What are your comments and would you suggest another paint color that matches the original pigment to use with your wall color?
Hi Sarah. I hope you read this and can answer my question. You inspire me and I'm grateful for all your content, especially your love for the Lord. My question is this--I have a pretty cabbage rose wallpaper in my powder room. However, it is vinyl and I hate that. I have 3 kids and taught lots of piano students in my home for years and I chose the vinyl many, many years ago for its durability. I can't replace it now and I'm wondering if I could do a lime wash or mod podge or anything else over the wallpaper to disguise the vinyl and dull it down a little. I would so appreciate your advice. Thank you. God keep you.
Wow!!!
Beautiful ❤️
Thank you, Heather!
Team Lizzy.
Love your videos Sarah
I remember working our primary bedroom walls like this, a lil paint a lil wax, pouncing the rags, blending the colors..
am always your fan Sarah
Love your videos
Sorry I couldn’t really hear the beginning, the loved watching the bulk of your new process.
Thank you so much!
I can’t do this in my current home but when we move I am absolutely doing this !
Yes! Looks old world!
Thank you, Lisa!
I would mix the clear and brown wax for a middle hue
Team Lizzie. I covet the wall treatments in the Bennett's home. In the 90's I did them all!! Frotage, sponging, raging, stencils, stripes, wallpaper and borders. Love it all, nice to see colour and texture again!
I’ve always noticed the interior/landscaping design while watching movies; often missing the real story of the movie!!
I love the aged look. You did a wonderful job! ❤
Thank you!
I think it looks nice.
Thank you so much!
I love the new look! But it’s a lot of work and steps involved!
Thank you so much! It was easier than paint because there was no prep.
It definitely needed the brown. Looks great!
I think so too!
I think the light blue is too light.
So glad you decided on adding the brown wax. The room will look amazing ❤
Yes! Thank you!
Team Lizzy…the results are very beautiful but quite labor intensive. Oh to be young again! 😉😀
That reminds me of when we used to do the smushing technique with the plastic we would put over the paint then rub the plastic all over the making wrinkles then pull of the plastic and a marble effect so beautiful I always loved that technique
Love the walls!! It scared me when you said wax. I didn’t realize there’s a wax you can paint over. It’s got me thinking now, maybe I can spruce up my old painted kitchen cabinets! 🤔
Yes, I hope you try it!
I really like it!!
Thank you so much!
I love how adventurous you are, Sarah! I thought of lime washing my powder room when I was renovating, but I didn't want to fiddle with it. This is a nice alternative! ❤
Thank you so much!
Oh my! I love it! Sarah you are definitely a trend setter. I’m sure very soon lots of walls will be getting a version of this. And we seen it here first! TFS!
Thank you so much!
It's gorgeous!
Thank you so much!
Love love and love it some more!!!! I love painting walls... you keep me inspired! Sweet Hubby of mine, he must love me 😆 🤣 We have a tiny house turned Growler for him to enjoy his cigars! I painted the door and windows a dk green and the house flat black. The door has a brass kick plate, doorknocker, and a brass light. The posts and porch ceiling are going to be oak gel stain! I'm so excited .... I'd love to join your design group someday!!! Keep'm coming....❤
Thank you so much! I hope you can join BTS, too! xoxo
Well great..... now I have to do this 😭😅 honestly so excited this looks great!
Thank you so much!
I’ve done many washes on walls and it’s actually kinda fun to create the unique look! I do love the blue on your walls now. I like the cozy moody look👍❤️
Thank you, Cathy!
All my walls have been slowly painted the same color off white. Sort of boring but I change everything else all the time so a steady background is for me.
I love the added depth and faux texture - you really nailed the look! It’s more art than painting technique. Well done!
Thank you so much!
The 90's are back! I for one love it! I still have old world plaster with aged glaze on my walls but I love Primtive decor. It needs the brown. More authentic looking. 😊 It is still beautiful!
Although I am more linear like your husband I really like the treatment on your walls! It's feels almost like an aging technique.
PS...love that you are so inspired by Jane Austen. In 2015 I did a trip to England and stopped in Chawton for a couple of days and became pen pals with her great-grandphew 6x removed. It was such a wonderful surprise and a treasured time of our trip...He is a Knight...his brother owns Chawton Manor and all of the inherited properties. Jane's older brother was adopted by the Knights as they had no children.
Such an amazing vacation!
Oh my gosh, that is ah-mazing!
@@SheHoldsDearly Definitely a highlight!
That and winding the church clock of the rectory that the Bronte sister's father was the parish priest in Haworth.
Dang Sarah…Slow down and enjoy what you have created! It’s beautiful!
Haha! Thank you so much!
It looks really great. I love that it is your own design. It doesn't look like everyone else's walls. It actually reminds me of the mural in your bathroom. Thanks for all the inspiration!!
Thank you so much!
I have to say I had my doubts but I honestly love the effect of what you accomplished. Marilyn from Michigan❤️👏🏻
Thank you so much!
The perfect moody color.😍
Thank you, Sarah!
I can tell it’s looking wonderful! I’m curious how you feel about it completed! Looking forward to an update.
Thank you so much!
That's gorgeous! I agree it looks better with the dark wax!
Thank you, Rachel!
Your original paint color was beautiful but flat looking. Now it has much more depth and interest. The furniture is going to look so amazing with the new backdrop. Evolutionary artistry! I love it!
Thank you so much!
Team Lizzy for the win!! It looks wonderful!! That little bit of brown made such a huge statement!
Thank you, Melinda!
Sarah, I love that you are not afraid to change things up no matter what. I think it does look really rich and Old World. Paint is fun because it really can be changed at a whim if you end up wanting to do so, not that it isn't work, but we need to always follow our artistic visions I feel. oxJulia
Thank you so much!
❤❤❤
I like it!
I don’t feel so bad now for always wanting to change things up 😅.
My poor husband comes home and he is not sure where he is.
I haven’t been brave enough to do creative things to my walls.
I’m thinking about wallpaper.
Thank you for sharing. Always fun to see what you do next!
Haha, I so understand!
It looks really good....❤
Thank you so much!
I am not a fan of color drenching but this technique really looks beautiful! In my opinion it tones down the color drenching enough to make the woodwork pop and the walls have so much age and depth all in a subtle and pleasing way.I really like what you did!
Yes, it does tone it down!
Pride & Prejudice is my favorite movie! Didn’t really notice your living room color is like that. Go with Bennet house.
Thank you so much!
Love it both with and without the dark wax- thank you for being the tester for using the wax on walls with paint- def takes away some of my own uneasiness and questioning before I start my own project!
It's pretty easy, especially if you don't want to go to the store for brown paint.
Me at the beginning: "No, it's not going to work. Stop putting that paint on! Oh, now wax - for heaven's sake STOP!" Me at the end: "Oh, my gosh, that's beautiful. I'm totally going to do it. I can't believe the depth and interest!" The result was so unexpected. Great job!
Bahaha, You are the cutest!
Exactly what I was thinking while watching.
I like it ! It’s hard to tell on video but I think I like it better without the brown. The blue without the brown reminds me of what some photographers and painters use as a backdrop for portraits.
We will see how long you keep it ! 😉
Thank you so much!
Personally, I like the touch of the dark wax. Gives it depth.
Thank you so much!
I like the music that you choose for your videos. Brimfield is soon. Are you going?
Thank you!
I won't be going to Brimfield this year - but I am looking forward to going back!
I’m going opposite of you! I had color and then painted it all Dove white. I looked at it for a year and said uh uh. I painted Soft fern green and am so much happier. I hear you about don’t be afraid, you can always change it. However I miss your green velvet sofa! I am up in the air about the lime wash look. You always make everything look so nice , so I will just trust you.
Isn't it amazing how our homes affect us?
@@SheHoldsDearly It is so true. ❤️
Good morning from Oregon! It looks amazing!
Awww, you are so sweet, Michelle!
Hi Sarah, i hope all that effort makes the filming process better for you in that room. It's much easier for us to be content with the efforts we put in at home, because we dont have to film it. That must be a struggle sometimes.
Thank you so much!
I also sponge painted back in the day, and that's what it reminds me of. Not that I don't like it, but I've been there done that kind of thing.
I did have the feeling, too.
Oh me too! And I had it that way for too long…. Nearly long enough to be back in style again😆
And honestly I really really adore your livingroom with the technique and with out, but also excited to see what you land on!❤ I still think of your chicken coop table and your brown plaid curtains, its been really fun watching you work through a space. I do alot of reworking spaces too so I feel less alone in that! 😅😂 best wishes thanks for all you do!
Our house changes daily, I love experimenting with decor! Thank you for your encouragement.
@SheHoldsDearly oh thankgoodness hahaha I'm the same way! and constantly question my creativity, contentment, and sanity it's just such a balancing act for me😆 hahaha so it's comforting some one with your talent goes through reworking too.
I felt the comment on how hard it can be to get good camera shots with dark walls. 😂 We have Hale Navy in our living room…and as much I love it…it’s definitely a struggle to film! I love how that wall turned out…and the dark wax is genius!!! I am now trying to decide where to try this in our home!! ❤ I always watch and rarely comment…you are my absolute favorite here on YT!
Thank you, you are the sweetest!
I understand that beauty and drama of the Dark Academia esthetic isn’t ever a practical choice but the faux lime wash looks so blotchy. Is it too late to get an authentic line wash? None of the walls on P&P look like the result you got with that technique but I admire your effort to make it work.
Penelope is one of my absolute FAVORITE interior design inspired movies! Of course, anything Jane Austen, yes, but for a very different and absolutely fun inspo - Penelope gives me all the vibes! =)
Oh wow, I will have to check that out!
Team Charlotte… ❤
noted!
The music you chose was so relaxing! I want to redo my walls in living room., I think I will try to lime wash one wall and see if I (husband) would like it. Why do we have to think about if our husbands are going to like it, what do they know about design lol. Love all your videos
Thank you so much! xoxo
In 2000 I sponged a wall in the master bedroom and did some ragging in the hall bathroom. I felt like I stepped back in time watching your project.
YES! It was taking me back, too!
That came out beautiful! I get tired of everyone having all white, not that it doesnt look good, but this looks stunning with the dark furniture. My husband also has a degree in mechanical engineering and absolutely dislikes painting lol.
Thank you! Haha, I bet our husbands would get along!
