- Solo sailing is a daunting prospect, its not for the faint hearted, that's for sure! Claire sailed alone form Cape Town to France in her 32 for long Dreadnaught sailboat, a super low-tech awe inspiring adventure and we were lucky enough to bump into her in a Spanish boatyard and have a natter, this is her story!

I’m so glad Eskimo is still crossing oceans! I sailed her from Australia to South Africa just over 20 years ago, when I was about the same age as this young woman. I was pregnant for that crossing, and my daughter was born in Knysna. I was sad to see Eskimo sold a few years later after I had returned to Canada with my daughter. But seeing this video has made me so happy to see that Eskimo is still doing what she does best! I hope you have many more voyages with her!❤
So cool to hear this! Claire will be stoked to hear this and we’re amazed you found our video! Someone else mentioned seeing you in Cape Town in a comment earlier too! Small world!
Vraiment sympa!!!!!
I remember that boat from Knysna, South Africa about 20 years ago. She belonged to an old dude who had a very attractive young lady. They had a baby while in Knysna. After they departed, I bought the mooring slip which they had been using. She was really well maintained. I great sea boat! Good luck! What a story!
No way! That’s amazing!
Yeah, a cool sturdy boat that’s for sure and she’s still being looked after now which is good, I do wonder where she will go in her!
Hey look who is there hi Greg
I sailed that boat from Knysna to Capetown with Rick, the previous owner
@YachtGulliver nath here
I’m slowly dying and I own a f “”””” sailboat and I’m about to say f777777 and just go
So uplifting to see a young person take on such a huge as challenge like this. Courage. Strength. Determination. Spirit. In the sea miles ahead you may think at times these are not with you. They are. You will always find them still with you as you need.
Yeah, she’s a total inspiration and will be stoked for your thoughts 👍⛵️
Bravo Claire 👏👏👏
For sure, that’s why we think too!!
Impressionnant Claire! Félicitations pour ta determination et ton courage
She’s super impressive if you want to speak directly with her the links for her channel are in the description 👍
What a pretty little boat that goes so well with Claire, we wish her long and beautiful sailings
So good of you! She will be so pleased to hear this!
Beautiful, courageous young woman! Very inspiring! I have sailed, with my wife (who has lived and farmed in Quebec), from Panama to Australia, and along the way met many cruising sailors, a few of them single-handers. It is a wonderful life. Congratulations! I know what it is like, out there, but on our boat there was always someone on watch while the other slept. Captain Joshua Slocum was my inspiration, the world’s first solo around-the-world sailor. Bravo!! (And deliciously filmed!) ❤😂❤️
For sure! She’s a real inspiration, thanks for letting us know about your journey too, we’re starting our own mission soon - we sold the last boat and are now building a van at present, its ti live in while we build a hull we bought into a boat to sail off!
Thank U 4 sharing this video. Be well. ❤
Cheers, we had a great time filming it! Thanks for commenting! 🤙
Amazing. What an incredible attitude.
Yeah, we thought so too 👍⛵️
Nice--i really like the way you let her tell her own story. great editing
Cheers Peter, really nice of you to say so! Much appreciated 👍
What a beautiful boat,,, and the Beauty of Youth to sail that far.........
So cool! She will be stoked to read this! Thanks! 👍⛵️
Amazing. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Lara 👍⛵️
Bumped into her in Motril Marina. What a legend!
No way! That’s where we filmed this! We may have met you there too?!
@@SailHub possible...we have the black boat and black cat. We stayed for a few months there
@@sailingsvmutiny1762 doesn’t ring a bell to be honest but we must must have seen you, we were on the hard next to Claire in a Najad 332. Anyhow, where are you these days?
@@SailHub In Gib/La Linea atm, getting some taxfree boat stuff 🤗.
@@sailingsvmutiny1762 for sure! Good idea! We spent a fair bit of time there of the years! Currently in Scotland, wishing we were in a boat in the sun!
Hey Jean, if you want to chat with Claire her social details are in the description. 👍
Must say I'm really proud of what you did here on Eskimo and I ! Professional work!! P.S love the feet shots full of antifouling 😂
Hey up lass, cheers for that. We had a great time with you back in Motril! Those feet 😂👍 hope to catch up again soon!
Oooooooh YEAAAH!
She’s a legend right!!
I think that Claire was lulled in a little corner of her mind by the story of Jessica Watson, 17 years old, who sailed around the world solo on her 10m boat Ella's Pink Lady......if we add the thousands of Nm traveled on various boats since early childhood, the need for this experience is an outcome, a personal confrontation with the ocean to write the rest of one's adventures.....and the present demonstrates it
Yup, I rekon there’s got to be some of that in there but I will say Claire’s a real free spirit and I don’t think it’s about sailing distances at all or even anyone knowing about it, for her it’s all a personal joy which is epic!

Hey Yann, Claire will be stoked to hear this but she probably won’t get it unless you reach to her social channels which are in the description 👍
Beautiful 😊
Wow that is a very very nice achievement :) 48 days and 8k miles is a lot!!! And you have the ARIES, perhaps my friend Peter built it for you, before he sold Aries to Holland. Last April I did alone 15 days and 2300 miles on my Lagoon, and hope to do a lot more solo sailing - be safe, and see you to there :)
Hey Niels, for sure she’s a legend mate! You should hook up on her Instagram account as this isn’t her channel fella, we were just inspired so made a mini doc! - her details are in the description 👍

Hey Cedric, this isn’t Clair’s TH-cam fella sorry, we just made a mini documentary on her.
From another Quebecer/ Canadian. Sailor of 40 years. I sailed a boat very similar, a Westsail 32 for 27 years. I just came across your videos I'll be watching all ,but it seems you don't have your own channel.
Claire has a TH-cam and is also active on Instagram and her details are in the description 👍
I can’t wait to set forth on my adventure in a couple of years.
Awesome! What’s your plan?
@@SailHub Olympia Washington to Hawaii, then Hawaii to French Polynesia. Then make my way towards Australia. Plan on doing that for 4 years. No plans after that but I will probably try to do a circumnavigation very slowly.
@sirkyoj1 get in! Now that’s an adventure!
I love her attitude and intestinal fortitude, otherwise known as guts. Plus, her skill set is amazing! Awesome Adventure!!! What's her Channel?

That she does, cheers Paul 👍
Salut Claire. 🥰
Bien comptant de te retrouver.
Hi! Thanks for commenting, Check out her social channels in the description!!
Hi, Clair’s instagram is in the description that’s the best place to follow her 👍
I’m looking at sailboats right now and to go on exploration, your number one candidate to be my captain anytime I sail,
Hey! You should hit her up over on Instagram, her details are in the description. However… if you want a dirty, hairy skipper I can help you out too 😆👍
Sorry, then you may not make to cut no scrubs aboard..
@bigalphadog5209 😆 I’m sure you’ll get over that for an exploration!
Encouraging!
Yeah! She’s a super inspiring lass 👍
Cool! So many people have seen this boat on their travels! Claire will be pleased to have your support!

I love Her! She is a huge inspiration to me and my solo sailing endeavors. However, 8000 miles in 48 days? Really?
For sure! Totally inspiring lass. But yeah… something must have gotten mixed up with the numbers somehow. Otherwise we would see a few more dreadnaughts in the vendee!
I can put some beers in the bilge .....most important...she would have got on with Moitessier...😊
Don’t forget the chocolate! That’s important!
Hello Claire, I would like to know the characteristics of your boat, year of manufacture, shipyard, engine, congratulations and thank you very much for the video
Hey!
Chris from Sail hub here, we made the video on Claire for our TH-cam, she’s a proper legend ay!
Claire’s instagram details are in the description chap, I’m sure she will be glad to help you find the Dreadnaught yard!
Your right, she should!
@@SailHub Tell her 😀👍
We already did!!
This is very nice video, and none of the stuff that sail hub sells on her boat :D
Cheers!!
Sail hubs sells… that’s cracks me up! We just let people know what’s out there, sharing our industry really. In reality I’m probably one of the most minimalist sailors, hardly use any tech at sea. A good anchor is paramount, good sails and sail trim and that’s all I really want to be honest.

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🍻❤️
Cheers Johnny!
Congrats to this young lady on an epic voyage. But I have a problem with the numbers. To sail 8000 miles in 48 days you have to average 6.94 knots. In a Dreadnought 32? That is a strong seaworthy boat but not known for being fast. Maybe rework those numbers.
Agreed! What can I say, she must have a slippery bottom! 😂
Or a monumental embelisher?
@@petermiller114 for sure! I can certainly verify I’ve never seen a speeding Dreadnaught! Although, I’ve only seen two!
@@SailHub I toured their facility many years ago in Carpenteria, Cal. Great people building solid boats. Not fast boats!
@petermiller114 that would have been a great tour! But yeah, their intention is sturdy not fast! FYI The stats aren’t mine so I can’t change them.
Go girl 👧 beautiful..2 jibs wow 👌
Cheers for commenting John! Claire will be stoked to hear such words! 👍
@SailHub I'm thinking 🤔 of getting into sailing ⛵️ it's fascinating..this girl 👧 great inspiration. 👍
That’s a tough sail #whyfathersmatter
Sure is! She did her father proud for sure!
Why she doesn't speak about the break up with her "friend"? Sagarani
Ah, that’s because she wasn’t asked about it. We bumped into her in Motril and interviewed her there and made a video from it, it was a really cool experience.
.....................This solo sailing adventure begins in Richards Bay South Africa, subject of this interview, I think that everything that happened before on Sagar Rani with Jonathan is private and must remain so....Claire is unambiguously permanent in her narrative by simply indicating that she changed from a duo adventure to a solo adventure....................th-cam.com/video/mkkeNxbcsmc/w-d-xo.html
@paul-louisczapek2321 good shout Paul
@@SailHub “Wisdom is having dreams big enough that you don’t lose sight of them when you pursue them.” Oscar Wilde
Good for Oscar, why are you telling me this?
It’s so refreshing to see someone that chooses a boat built to handle rough seas and ocean debris. Your background in sailing and past knowledgeable comes immediately into play by this choice. TH-cam is now populated of midlife crisis naive adventurers that cross oceans on accidents waiting to happen.
Hey, yeah she totally nailed the nosy for her sailing! You can follow her on Instagram too, link in the description!

Well isn’t that great! Not really seeing the relevance here though.
@@SailHub because of your fear of death, you don’t have to be afraid when you look to Jesus Christ because He gives everlasting life.
@Mechanicsville804 I’m aware of that and it’s quite handy but I don’t see the relevance to Claire’s story.
@Mechanicsville804 but Claire gets the same from taking chocolate in here trips. I see your point I just thinks it’s a bit weird to be mentioning it in a scenario that has no mention of this.
C’mon, give her a break. She’s being interviewed in English for an English YT channel.
When it is a female, all of a sudden the whole interview steers to her feelings. I want to hear about the preparations, provisioning, technical and navigational challenges, etc. Nevertheless, good work skipper!
She did good aye!
For sure, there’s loads on this but we were more inspired by her attitude - it’s a rarity and awesome. Maybe being a boat builder, I get a bit bored of prep and all the rest and she set off with not much at all which really inspired me.
