Still can't believe he didn't win. He was so incredible in the role. I was lucky enough to see him twice in BOM, Angry Inch, and Falsettos. Andrew and Josh Gad split the vote.
I don't know why you'd dislike it just because you were a Mormon, though. The musical is actually very popular among Mormons, especially returned missionaries who typically relate to the troubles they go through. Mormons are encouraged by church leaders to have a sense of humour, which means being able to laugh at things like the BoM musical rather than be offended by them.
yeah, it actually happened. they thought black people were spirits who did not pick satan but did not fight hard for Jesus and the "blackness was a curse" but then the story was abolished by the church although it was what their prophets said that came from God. so they actually believe that god changed his mind about it, but some are still quietly holding to the more consistent stance. including some black Mormons.
To be fair, the Abrahamic explanation for why Black people have dark skin is that one of Noah's sons had premarital sex with his fiance. This made god punish him by making the skin of him and all of his descendants black.
As an ex-Mormon who was completely convinced that all these beliefs were true- I find this equally hilarious as I find it cringe-worthy and embarrassing.
It's supposed to be affectionately teasing Mormons while making the point that just because some beliefs seem nutty, it doesn't mean they're wrong (hint: there's a line later in the production about "Salt Lake City just being a metaphor." Of course, Salt Lake City isn't just a metaphor; it's just nothing like the villagers' understanding of it).
Check out the video of Norbert Leo Butz in Catch me if you can. Norbert's performance in that was a true powerhouse.. I wouldn't be mad if Andrew had won it, but not surprised that NLB did.
As a former Mormon, who also used to be a missionary for the Church, I can say that almost all the faith tenets expressed in this song are basically true. Except God doesn’t live on a planet called Kolob. Kolob is supposed to be a star and god lives near it, not on it according to the Mormon scriptures.
the fight against mormonism has already been won over and over , people who got to see them get their asses kicked just enjoy reminiscing about it with others.
+Rose Malinofsky nope. im not a mormon but i only laugh at the terrible things and funny things he sings like about black people, of his situation hahaha i mean he just walked straight to the warlord and sings uncontrollably lol how ridiculous is that ?can you just imagine seeing that in real life hahaha and among other things:)
+Rose Malinofsky my cousin was invited to go with a group of friends of his (who were Mormon) and he agreed and according to my cousin they were laughing harder than he was.
I haven't seen it, but I personally am fine with it. I think it could give people false first impressions, but as far as I'm concerned it's a good show. A lot of other mormons I know those believe that it should be ignored and disregarded because it is satire.
I recently saw this on tour, and the Mormon church actually had an ad in the playbill that said "now you've seen the show, but the book is always better!"
"I believe , that the Lord God created the universe, I believe that He sent His only Son to die for my sin " Yes amen ! .. " And i believe that ancient Jews built boats and sailed to America" Wait... what ?
It's been proven that many MANY different ancient cultures came to the Americas way before the Europeans of the 1700s. So that really isn't the most far fetched part of the Mormon religion.
TheWassup199 Yeah, it took the Englsh to be egotistical enough to try and CLAIM a whole huge land mass. But I didn't say anything about claim, I just said that they'd been there. Despite what history books would have you believe, a whole bunch of cultures knew that North America was there. It wasn't some huge undiscovered land mass.

Correction from an ex Mormon:: ancient Jews built SUBMARINES and sailed to America. Not boats lol
What??? Seriously??
Just remember everyone, if Andrew Rannells can go from playing James in Pokémon Live! to being the original Elder Price in one of the longest running musicals on Broadway, then anything is possible.
I'm sorry, what? Pokemon live?

how can you make a song that makes fun of something to be so ridiculous but is still so uplifting and wholesome
I like how the warlord starts as "wait I want to see where he's going with this", immediately followed by "I regret this decision already"
i still can't believe the creators of south park wrote this musical
The tone of South Park and the tone here are very related
They’ve always been great at writing songs, the South Park movie and Team America are great examples
it's really not surprising when you listen to the songs they've done before, they've always been REALLY good at picking up the mood of different types of songs. I still get Cartman's "too many minorities at my water park" song stuck in my head lol

Well The South Park movie and Team America were musicals. And very good ones at that. America: Fuck Yeah is basically Americas theme song now.

@@kieronshepherd4445 lmao
I don't know why you'd dislike it just because you were a Mormon, though. The musical is actually very popular among Mormons, especially returned missionaries who typically relate to the troubles they go through. Mormons are encouraged by church leaders to have a sense of humour, which means being able to laugh at things like the BoM musical rather than be offended by them.
we stan character development
3:45 "And I believe that in 1978, God changed his mind about black people!" lolol wow
yeah, it actually happened. they thought black people were spirits who did not pick satan but did not fight hard for Jesus and the "blackness was a curse" but then the story was abolished by the church although it was what their prophets said that came from God. so they actually believe that god changed his mind about it, but some are still quietly holding to the more consistent stance. including some black Mormons.
And people wonder why I despise religion.
I don't....
To be fair, the Abrahamic explanation for why Black people have dark skin is that one of Noah's sons had premarital sex with his fiance. This made god punish him by making the skin of him and all of his descendants black.
mattbenz99 [Canadian Gambit] that's exactly what the Mormons believe about the Indians and their red skin

You should have auditioned for a role.

It is clearly satire, but it is done with so much love! They clearly is truly facinated by these people. What do actual Mormons think about this?
I have so many Mormon friends who love this. Keep in mind my friends are really accepting, I don't know what strict mormons would think of it.
Jack Moody That is amazing!
I'm a Mormon. I find it somewhat disrespectful, but more people have learned about what we ACTUALLY believe after seeing the musical. It's whatever.
True, but what i mean is that it is where it starts to go wrong compared to the Bible
Hannah Overton the norwegians were actually first to DISCOVER it, not claim it.
vikings...
William Cunningham sorry I didn't mean it that way!
